I didn't know Daniel, but went to school with his Brother, who was regularly telling me about his brother's band. Apparently the name of the band was suggested to them by the Art teacher at our school.
Imagine me seeing this at 9 years old in 1983...a little mexican boy..did not even know david bowie and that he was the original singer of this song... it changed my life forever
It always thought that it took a lot of balls to do Ziggy Stardust as it's so identified with Bowie. I hope it made him very proud that they did it so damn well.

The band Bauhaus was on the set of the 83 film the Hunger and where performing as part of a scene, bowie, one of the stars, was also on set, and walked in on them practicing by playing Ziggy stardust. Bowie was so impressed he called his lawyer to hand them the rights to cover this song on the spot! Also, If you haven't seen the hunger, that movie is fucked up. Highly recommend if a erotic horror movie staring david bowie as a vampire is smth your interested in.

Edit … This is a cheap effort to capture the essence of the original which was done, live, a decade before. Listen to the Bowie live performance if think this is acceptable. The phrasing, everything … even the breathing is copied. Maybe you’re not aware of this and am giving you the benefit of the doubt

What is for dead certain is that a couple years after this was done, Bowie picked their song, "Bela Lugosi's Dead" for the opening credits of his movie, "The Hunger". He most certainly wouldn't have done that if he was put off in any way by this cover.

David Bowie's version has the band sounding a bit too polished, with David Bowie's vocals placed a bit too high in the mix. TL:DR - David Bowie's version sounds too polished, this version sounds rawer and feels like it has more 'teeth'.
Bowie was known for his extremely considerate manners. He was always far too polite to _ever_ snub a sincere tribute. So I'd imagine that when he said that, inside he was thinking more like: "I wish this is how it had been mixed and mastered, mate. There, I said something nice! 'Never don't be nice when you're being quoted for all bloody eternity'-that's what me mum taught me!" (Yes, Bowie's thoughts frequently had exclamation points.)
