Thank you. Very concise and informative! I'm not sure the access to charging stations is where it needs to be in the Midwest. I looked into renting an EV for a trip and NOT ONE company offered them. When I looked at charging stations along the route, it was pretty dicey
If you lived in California, charging stations would be easy to find. But if I lived in the midwest, I would lease a hybrid and wait until more charging stations came online.
I think you should’ve done a winter range test. The heat pump in modern Teslas work well and I have a feeling the real world range in winter will be significantly better than the Ford.
Consumer Reports did a test of several EVs and it shows that all EVs including Tesla lose a decent amount of range in cold weather. The heat pump is not a significant difference maker. You can Google "CR Tests Show Electric Car Range Can Fall Far Short of Claims" to see the data.
Ford will ship a free adapter later this year to Mach-E and F150 Lighting owners, this according to the press release from Ford when they announced that they will adopt the Tesla charging stations. Future Ford EVs will come equipped with a port compatible with Tesla chargers.
I rechecked the announcement, and there was nothing about it being free. It might be for the 2024 models (included in price), but I am pretty sure us 2022 and 2023 model owners will get the opportunity to pay. Also, it is likely to be 1st quarter 2024, not this year.
WSJ does what it does best again - play politics. This is not a tech review, just another attempt to fool customers with a biased opinion. However, customers collectively tend to make smart choices.
The decision of the winning car was clearly made before the video was shot (aka agenda driven content). Here are 3 reasons why: 1. Smartcar. One of Tesla's USP is its truly a "smart" car. From the seamless integration of the app to the car, driver preferences saved, summon, voice control every function etc. Nothing else comes even close 2. Charging infra: Again, nothing is even close. In terms of speed, network, reliability. Even if Ford works with Adapters only a percent of the network will be available and it will be slower. 3. Autopilot - Joana intentionally left out FSD ($200/month) demo that will literally take yoh from point A to B with minimal interventions (if any). Again, nothing comes even close.

We’ve gone through 7 EVs and last time we used public charging back in 2013? What she failed to share is how does car drives on the freeway? Tesla model Y is loud, rattling, squeaky and very cheap interior materials. We absolutely hated it and thank Carvana for fast & simple transaction for getting rid of $72k price tag really only should be worth $45k at the most!!
For people who buy instead of lease, getting a car with LFP batteries should be a big consideration. No regrets of buying my Model 3 standard range. Plenty of range for me, and it’s good to know I’ll have much better cycle life compared to other battery chemistries. I don’t live in a cold climate so range drops aren’t a concern either.
@@wiktorjachyra1869 : China's LFP are cheap, inferior batteries, mostly notably used by auto companies like Tesla, Ford, etc, all of whom have significant operation in China.
@@tooltalk counterpoint . LFP batteries seem to stabilize at around the 90% health mark , as opposed to the traditional battery chemistries which don’t really stabilize until ~80%. Also, LFP has a much higher cycle life, ~5000 cycles as opposed to ~1500. These numbers are estimates but you get the general idea. I knew the pros and cons when I got my car, and paying an extra $15,000 wasn’t worth it for the long range, which was range I wouldn’t realistically use for probably 90% of miles driven over the lifetime of the car
Just about the DUMBEST car test I've seen! Instead of measuring the efficiency of the cars, she relies on how much % battery is left in the car after that drive - this does NOT tell her how much energy was used and different cars measure the remaining % state of charge differently.
Excellent video! Joanna and team, would you mind reviewing the Chinese BYDs? They are becoming increasingly common in developing countries such as Colombia and are very affordable in comparison to these.
Excellent review , not subjective , no misleading, only USA and USA political friendly country car.... NOT a single EV from CHINA to help customers to pick a better value car , what a fair review
Very nice job and deff one of the better composed comparisons! I’m not sure if you were aware or if at the time of filming the Supercharger you pictured (5:05) was activated yet but it is one of the newer locations that has the hardware for universal CCS charging! You can tell in the Tesla app! The infotainment and app integration on the Ford has been very disappointing for me. I have owned EVs and currently run an EV education and rental company in GA!
In terms of battery percentage and the range left are we completely certain that they are accurate? As in do we know that the cars travel the exact same miles for each percentage.
Interesing video, but it does seem the USA is quite behind in (non Tesla) charging. Here in Europe, Tesla's now come with CCS and it has basically become the Euro (world even if we exclude the Japanese CHADEMO) standard. Having to to trickle charge is, at least where I live, increasingly rare.
I would imagine its EU regulation, America should do they same. EU also forced all android phones to use one type of charger and now is forcing apple to adopt usb c like the rest
My biggest issue with the tesla is that they want $15k for the full self drive package. After using it a few times during my promo period, I don't think I would pay 1k, let alone 15. Its jarring on streets and even on highways when the conditions aren't ideal (it tends to wonder when you're in a lane that merges, among other things like randomly slowing down). I get all the functionality I want from the Self-Steer on highways.
If tesla doesn’t win the technology category than that video is sponsored… Edit: i have no idea why she trusted the Ford autopilot. Tesla has 20 times more data and the choice would be obvious for me…
Great video and a lot of work to put this together! I wonder how accurate the range display is. We all know that five bars on a Samsung cell phone is not the same as five bars on an iPhone. As far as I know there are no standards and car manufacturers might be tweaking the range display to support their narrative.
100% fully agreed with the leasing. So many early Tesla adopters dropped their purchases with new model changes like cell phones; it wasn’t even funny. Shame you didn’t include the Volvo XC40 and C40 Recharges in this test Johanna.
While I think the video was good I do think that the drivers assist category was not very informative and was frankly botched. This category should objectively go to Tesla. The Tesla has vastly more capable hardware and software such that you have the option of Autopilot, Enhanced Autopilot, or FSD beta which is effectively A to B driving capability anywhere you want to go. It literally is like having a chauffeur (while monitoring) to take you anywhere and everywhere you ask it to go. This is not just freeway driving in some locations like Ford. Also, I noticed she was nervous using both the Tesla and Ford systems. The value of these systems does NOT become apparent with just one single short drive when you are understandably nervous! It takes a few weeks or even a couple of months of non-stop driving with the system engaged to understand what you have as a driving tool. The Tesla is hands down the winner because once you get past that inevitable nervous phase at the beginning, you reach that OMG moment where you realize this is amazing and I can never live without this again.
@@MachE_VLOG I wouldn't say it rules out FSD beta. A couple of things worth noting are that the Model Y is eligible for the full $7500 tax credit which brings the purchase price with FSD beta to under $60K. Also Model Y gives you the most flexibility since you can either go with the free Autopilot or opt for Enhanced Autopilot or FSD beta whenever you want after purchasing the car. You can decide to pay and use these advanced features via subscription to control your cost over time (as opposed to buying it outright). Also, the performance of both Autopilot and FSD beta have dramatically improved over time with Tesla's OTA updates. FSD beta today is very different that FSD beta 2 years ago or even 1 year ago and the improvements will continue. In the early days of FSD beta the term "sketchy" comes to mind as a fair description. Today it is relaxing and safer to use than driving yourself in most circumstances (of course while always monitoring) even if not yet perfect. So the term "beta" has had very different implications to the driver experience over the years. IMO, today's FSD beta will make most drivers who use it for a real trial period never want to drive without it.
@@getreal7217 We just filmed a video on using FSD Beta and it did not do well at all. As for the price, that is moving the target if you now want to change it to include tax credits. As for OTAs, the other cars get those as well and improve over time, too. That is nothing special now.
@@MachE_VLOG My comments on the performance of FSD beta are based on my own experience and my wife's experience over almost 2 years in my geographical area and over almost 50K miles using it virtually 100% of the time. I don't know where you filmed or in what circumstances/environments you chose to drive so difficult for me to compare and contrast why your experience was different than mine is. I can certainly point to specific drive here and there in recent months where it did not do well in a specific circumstance but overall it is truly relaxing, reassuring, and in many instances made better decisions than I would have made if driving myself. The redundant nature of having two driving systems working in parallel (FSD beta and myself) is now indispensable to me. I consider it the ultimate driver's assist system at this time. But I'm always open to see a better system with better or broader capabilities.
@@getreal7217 Our video is easy to find and it is literally just showing what FSD Beta can do right now. It was a simple drive but still had lots of issues. And if I actually paid $15,000 for something called Full Self Driving, I'd want a refund. It is not that.
You hit it in the first sentence: "... under $60k". They are ridiculously expensive. How can they make a hybrid with gas and electric power, and all that is required for them to integrate, for in the $40k range, remove all the gas related aspects and they become $65k??? Crazy talk!
I wonder what solid batteries will change things. Toyota aims to release the first solid state battery car in 2027. If solid batteries work out, I suspect they'll be the standard in 2050 for cars, laptops, and phones.
I'm confident she's change her mind after a few months because anyone with an EV need a learning curve no matter what (to trust & learn more about how to use those cars). Good video!
I've always been a fan of Tesla but when I road in the back seat of a model "Y", I was really disappointed. Roomy but a lot of road noise on the freeway and I could feel every bumb in the road. I beleive the Ford Mach E was the right choice.👏👏👍👍
@@205rider8 Yeah. The new suspension is good for the price. Not BMW level but it is much cheaper then a BMW at 49k and 42k with the 7.5k incentive. And cheaper to run etc.
I hear "it's a tie Ford and Tesla." Tesla beats them at everything. There has never been a head to head review by media where they give a clear winner what they deserve.
No cost comparison? Model Y auto lane change needs $6k EAP option (or $100/month subscription). BlueCruise 1.2 after 90 days for auto lane change on the Mach-E is $2,100 for 3 years, then $800 a year on year 4+. What about insurance cost between Model Y and Mach-E? I see Mach-E has 1.9% APR for 60 months.
I’m biased since I own a Mach E, and have been very pleased with it but like everything each has it pros and cons. For me I like the styling of the Ford better and in terms of build quality/fit and finish for me the Ford outshines Tesla and I like having Wireless Apple CarPlay and a separate instrument cluster above the steering wheel. However Tesla definitely has the advantage on charging and tech features/software upgrades/UI full stop. I’ll be glad to get to use the supercharger network in 2024 when it opens up to Ford. Also in my experience regarding range Ford gives you pretty accurate range indications from start to finish whereas Tesla in most instances seems to be exceedingly optimistic until it hits 50% state of charge and then it starts being more realistic. Tesla does have a heat pump though. I think both are great cars. One thing though for me based on where I happen to live is that there are no Tesla service centers in my state at all whereas Ford has dealerships in basically any town that has a dealership so for me owning the Mach E makes more sense in that regard due to my location.
Tesla Autopilot works on virtually any road, Ford Blue Cruise is very limited to only roads they have mapped. There is extra cost for both systems you tested but, the base Autopilot is included in every Tesla for no extra charge. You also left out a huge consideration, NHTSA has rated Tesla's as the safest cars on the road.
My use case for EV is driving from suburbs to city for work, and the only advantage Tesla have over the competition in that regard is Sentry Mode, especially when Im in the city. I find it so incredibly frustrating that only Tesla takes built in dashcams serious. GM could easily add Sentry Mode to their lackluster OnStar service plan so customers have a reason to subscribe.
Everyone who has read the torrent of super biased often entirely fictional FUD from the WSJ about Tesla over the last fifteen years knew she was not going to pick the Tesla before the video started.
I was of the same opinion that the WSJ would never allow a Tesla to win and she never let me down. The give away came when she trusted the Ford to make lane changes but not the Tesla and kept taking over. That's neither a test nor a fair comparison. Thats outright bias right there. By all reputable reports the Mustang is a great car. I hope she actually leases one and doesn't regret it
Wonderful presentation; thanks. I'm staying with my 2017 Subaru Forester for now, but it's good to see that EV's could be practicable for many drivers right now.
Almost no one realistically needs 300 miles of range. The best eco-friendly and functional daily use car is a plug in hybrid with a small battery until they can improve the battery tech.
Of course you do and it only takes one road trip to figure out. It will be better when DC chargers are available everywhere. For now though it takes planning and extra range helps tremendously.
@@iamalmostanonymousEspecially in the winter. I live in Canada and I’m thankful for the full 568 km (353 mi) of rated range in my car. I don’t often need most of it, but a few times I have, and the rest of the time it just means that the battery will wear out more slowly because the extra capacity means fewer cycles.

My Escape 2006 Hybrid has the original battery and it still works ! Can still tool around at low speeds on the battery. Incredible.
That battery costs $15K. Are you going to replace it when it dies?
I would go with a Prius Prime. Best of both worlds.
And the worst of both worlds too!
You are performing maintenance on two powertrains. I’ll never buy another internal combustion engine. Sick of “fix or repair daily” (FORD)
@@AirmanJH As someone that owns ICE vehicles (that I have no immediate plans to replace and certainly not with a BEV) and a Tesla, how much maintenance do you really expect to do on a Prius 4 cyl that only occasionally runs? Those things go forever, an oil change every year or two is probably all you'll need for 200k+ on the ICE part of that vehicle. Trust it to a long (15+ year) calendar life more than the Tesla we own. I just have no desire to own and drive a Prius, but there is obvious use case for them that would work for so many people.
@@tazeatI owned a Prius. Although I enjoyed driving the car, I had to do frequent maintenance and repairs. And the battery died at 65k miles. I would estimate that the engine ran 60-70% of the time I drove it.
So much credibility lost in this video. The software is a Tesla is far superior. The drive experience is so much better. FSD is far superior.
Good Presentation. Very informative I LIKE the guitar Riffs!
I think the part missing from this assessment is the entertainment you can get on the infotainment. If you have kids, having Netflix and games on your Tesla goes a loooooong way
Use the window and enjoy the world like millions did before tech owned your mind.
Except you can't use that while driving. And when you stop, it's time to get out of the car and move around.

I find it very interesting that the infotainment was rated as a tie between the Tesla and the Ford when the integrated Zoom app on Tesla's infotainment system - which is what was used to video call with MKB - was prominently demonstrated. It shows a clear edge I think, in addition to the navigation integration.
No CarPlay is an instant disqualifier for myself and many.
@@dtemp132lol CarPlay sucks. I felt the same before getting the model 3 but now I never think about CarPlay and honestly prefer teslas software now. It is much more fluid and connected to the car and has everything you need. Plus Tesla is working on an AppStore for developers to create more apps

Whooops....you made the wrong choice
My thought as well. Winter range will be important in NJ. Mach e will lose range much quicker
@@buzzyvideo They all will lose range in cold weather. Or did you want to prove you have no idea like op?
Others have done that including Edmunds and they found out that the heat pump doesn't actually help Tesla that much.
My experience with 4 EVs is the Tesla will retain the most range. The bolt would lose 30% in winter.
Yay for early adoption right? Lol
1:35 great video overall! Just want to mention that the labeling of the vehicles are incorrect.
I love this reporter! More of her, please!
WSJ does what it does best again - play politics. This is not a tech review, just another attempt to fool customers with a biased opinion. However, customers collectively tend to make smart choices.
0:49 find 1 mistake
The decision of the winning car was clearly made before the video was shot (aka agenda driven content). Here are 3 reasons why:
1. Smartcar. One of Tesla's USP is its truly a "smart" car. From the seamless integration of the app to the car, driver preferences saved, summon, voice control every function etc. Nothing else comes even close
Oh and 4. Acceleration (0-60) and drive comfort/quality was totally ignored.
What a horrible review 😂
Tesla may have a more reliable network but the Hyundai has it on speed when available at 350 kW charging to Tesla's 250 kW.
Did you notice she filmed the award declarations before she drove the second half of the trip? Ford, after all, is one of WSJ’s top advertisers.
Ya, disappointed with MKBHD as well

Really appreciate your videos, Joanna. And your humor
Ford also uses a lfp battery in the new mach e
Yes, but like Tesla, only on the lower-ranged, non-performance version. I'm a fan of the LFP tech. @@wiktorjachyra1869
@@wiktorjachyra1869 : China's LFP are cheap, inferior batteries, mostly notably used by auto companies like Tesla, Ford, etc, all of whom have significant operation in China.
>> No regrets of buying my Model 3 standard range.
Bro did they really change the title because they realized how much of a hit piece it was against tesla?
I work for the largest renter of EVs in Arizona, and our staff and customers are in dire need of EV education.

In terms of battery percentage and the range left are we completely certain that they are accurate? As in do we know that the cars travel the exact same miles for each percentage.
Leasing or how you make a company smile. 😂
49 seconds in your video, you have two images of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, one of which is labeled Volkswagen ID.4.

Big oversight.
Indeed
She missed the superior charging tech on the Tesla. Once she goes on a long trip, she see how bad the Mach is. 😂Of course WSJ hates Elon and Tesla.
nope. she covered it quite well. you just missed it
If tesla doesn’t win the technology category than that video is sponsored…
Edit: i have no idea why she trusted the Ford autopilot.
Yes, would have been better to look at the consumption and then figure out the range manually.

@@simondj8572yep. Volvo and Polestar not even mentioned
But it was also labeled about cars under $60k so that rules out FSD Beta because that alone costs $15,000. It is also a Beta.
It’s not that Tesla is great, the competition is just trash. They are set in their ways. You sell cars but you don’t have chargers around town?!
there is no greater joy then launching the rise on the back side slamming the car right as you hit the downhill corner
You hit it in the first sentence: "... under $60k". They are ridiculously expensive. How can they make a hybrid with gas and electric power, and all that is required for them to integrate, for in the $40k range, remove all the gas related aspects and they become $65k??? Crazy talk!

Joanna is so fun to watch
A lot of the Ford dealers don’t do a lot of the service work on EVs. In fact, my local dealer is completely opposed to even selling them.
Should’ve test the Ioniq 6 instead. Love my car. First EV and Hyundai. Better drive & style
"We plan to do XYZ" is the chorus of all the companies who already lost against Tesla but can't admit defeat.
How about auto pilot deaths that no one wants to talk about?
My use case for EV is driving from suburbs to city for work, and the only advantage Tesla have over the competition in that regard is Sentry Mode, especially when Im in the city. I find it so incredibly frustrating that only Tesla takes built in dashcams serious. GM could easily add Sentry Mode to their lackluster OnStar service plan so customers have a reason to subscribe.
Great video. Thanks! I appreciate your "just the facts, ma'am" approach to this. Because it was WSJ, I was expecting anti-EV bias, but saw none.
I hope she actually leases one and doesn't regret it
Exactly, the excuses they made to give the Ford the edge are just outrageous if you actually know what they are talking about.
I'm going to wait!
Says the child who lives with mummy.
How do you judge handling when you’re not a semiprofessional driver or knowledgeable enthusiast ?
I mean if she likes it she likes it. Isn't that ultimately what matters?
It's like asking your girl tochoose restaurants she wants to eat at. It doesn't include logic. What only matters is what she feels that day.
P.S. An unsolicited suggestion to Ford. Commercial advertisements shouldn't be as elaborate and as expensive as this. You can't fool anyone with this kind of videos.
didn't learn much here. She could have given a final score to each. No substantive reason for choosing the Ford at the end other than she trusts Ford self-driving capability more and that category was the only one that really mattered at the end of the day
