Want to hear the best 'auction fever buy' story?
When I was a kid, my dad would take the family to auctions looking for antiques and whatnot. One day we were at what I assume was an estate sale on a large farm. And my dad, being kind of a...ahem... jerk.... decided to start bidding up another guy. They really got into it, until the other guy suddenly stopped. Thus my dad was left with a llama. A live, brown, furry, anti-social, angry llama. We were lucky, and owned an acreage at the time that we could bring the animal home to.
It took him a month or more to find a new home for it. No one wanted an angry llama.
Just why I stay away from auctions myself... never know when you’ll come home with a llama ;) thank you for your awesome share!

My grandfather worked driving the steam trains at an amusement park (Busch Gardens). In one area they had various animals in a field. There was a mean black llama that would bully the other animals. One day one of the train drivers threw some coffee in the llama's face as the train passed. Naturally, that didn't make the llama very happy. So the llama stayed in the same spot and waited for that train to return. (There are 2 trains that go in a big circle.) When the train came around again, the llama spit in the driver's face!

NOT a bad day. About 10 years ago I lived in a Camper Van with my dog and traveled the northern United States and south and western Canada, I use to buy and sell Antiques and Collectibles for extra money, I mostly was doing specialty dog training with people who wanted to train their working line dogs for dog sports, but I made more buying and selling, plus it is a far more exciting and addicting job. Watching your channels makes me want to go back to those days on the road, I like how everyone thinks this is an easy job, but doing it for real will humble you quick to what things are really worth, plus back then there was no way to make extra money off of things like TH-cam. My best buy was a 5 window 1949 Chevy 3100 Truck, absolutely rust free and original with beautiful patina, the motor did NOT work but did turn over and had NOT drove in about 10 years but had low miles like 58,000 miles, he did NOT have the money to throw into it and before he parked it before that winter about 10 years ago it was driving fine, and the owner was willing to sell because he had medical bills and a kid who was going to college in a few weeks, even though it was the only thing he owned that he had got from his father. I offered $5,000 US and the owner wanted $10,000, I told them if the motor worked I would have paid that all day long, after some haggling we settled on $6,500, plus I was figuring about another one thousand to have it shipped back to Minnesota from Utah. So I call a towing/shipping company to come get the truck the next day. They show up and the guy who was driving asked me if I was interested in selling the truck, apparently he called his company owner and told him about the truck because he had been looking for a similar truck. It turns out the towing/shipping company was started by the owners father in a 1949 5 window 3100 Chevy Truck they converted into a tow truck. So I tell the driver that I would sell it if the money was right. So about 2 hours later we all met at a little rest area diner about 25 miles from where I bought the truck from and the Towing/shipping company owner shows up to look at the truck. He told me the story of why he wanted a truck, how he was looking for about 3 years for one. He looks the truck over, got really emotional too, Then he says I hope I don't offend you with $10,000. I replied that he was NOT the only guy looking for a 5 window with a rust free original body, it was actually a holy grail truck to me and how I always wanted one and that how I wanted a winter project. Immediately he says $14,000. Now I am thinking that this guy is willing to pay full retail for this and possibly more, So I started talking myself out of love with it, which was tough. So i tell the guy that he is getting closer to talking me out of it, then I look at it and am stuck on the fact that this truck was loved and kept indoors, and how all it needed was a little clear coat over the original patina and some engine work, The guy says that is exactly what he was thinking, and how he wanted to keep it exactly how it was. So now I was at the point of do I sell the best and most original temperature controlled in a garage kept 5 window that I will never find another better than it no matter how far or wide I search. Then he offers $15,500 and tells me that is his final offer, and that he wants the truck will keep it in a garage and do nothing but cherish it and the memories he had of him and his father in one when he was a kid. So I couldn't believe I said OK, SOLD.
A few weeks later I was thinking about the truck still. But surprisingly to me I was still thinking about the guy I bought it from. I remembered that when I was talking to him he was explaining how stressed he was over money for medical bills and for his kid to go to college and how he had another kid that would be going to college the next year too. And how he joked that they have baby showers when you have a kid, wedding showers when someone gets married, but they never have college showers when your kids go off to college. So i went and bought a Hallmark card that shows a baby on the cover, open it up and says Its A Girl!! So I put a line through the word girl where it says It's a Girl, and under it I wrote College Student. Then I wrote under it in the blank space That someone actually loved the Truck more than I did, how he could NOT believe how well it was taken care of and had to have it, so sadly I sold it. But the good news is that the Hallmark card is suppose to give you some hope for a College Student Shower, and I stuffed 10 $100 bills into the card and sent it to the previous owner. And the sad thing is I actually feel like I did NOT do it for that guy, I feel like I did it for me. I was so mad at myself for selling that truck, even though it would have been basically crazy if I didn't sell it. So instead of feeling like I lost the holy grail truck, I wanted to look back and think that I helped someone out, and that was more important than having the material thing. And the previous owner sent me a nice card saying that I restored his faith in humanity and how thankful he was. Then about 4 months later i get an email from the guy who bought the truck from me. He sent a nice email telling me how that the saying you can't buy happiness was NOT true, because just sitting in that old truck reminds him of his father every day. So I respond and told him how I was a little mad at myself for selling it, so i sent the guy who I bought it from some money because he only sold the truck because he was in a tough spot. So he asked if I had contact info to the guy I bought it from, he would like to send him a letter and maybe some pictures to show him that he is taken amazing care of the truck. I knew the guy would love that so I gave him hie address and email info. Then about a week later I get another email from the guy I bought the truck from. He said that he had received a letter from the new owner, and got a few pictures of the truck too. Then he adds that he could NOT believe that the guy who owns the truck now heard the story from me of why he had to sell it, so he sent him the Thank You letter, but he also stuffed hundreds and hundreds of dollars in it. And that was finally when I realized that we made a difference and I could stop thinking about the one truck that got away. It never stops amazing me how important it is for so many to have something that reminds them of the past and people they love. And to make if even more weird, both guys were named Dan, and even more weird is they both went by the name Junior, WHY, Because they were both Dan Jr's, How weird is that, Like it was meant to be.
Great story! I’ve had a few cars that I sold too quickly or at times wish I’d kept... but you just have to keep looking forward, can’t take any of this with us anyway :)

It’s a melancholy thought, but also satisfying.

I used to sell many things at auctions for your wood items and since you have 2 kids to help you buy some Murphy's wood oil soap and clean those items made of wood even carefully the old radios so that they shine and present a better product. It is a shame but I personally think that if those items were cleaned and shined when auctioned off that you would have received higher bids. It seems that everyone that is selling wood items in the auction prefer to be lazy and not clean anything. It would not hurt to try cleaning them well before auction to maximize your returns on items sold.

My husband and I used to go to auctions alot. One of my favorite things to do but I'm glad my hubby was sane ,because I tend to get auction fever too!!!😃

Love watching. So interesting. We used to go to auctions when the children were home. Our best find was a box that was a moving box full of baseballs and we still have the bat.
It would be more fun on our end. If you could give us the price you paid for the item before it sells. So we could root for you to profit. My thought anyway.

Northern electric electronics have huge value in the audiophile community. I’d suggest some research on the subject and taking them to a more dedicated market. The tubes alone if well tested can go for astronomical amounts

That was a pretty decent showing for your lots. That roll-top desk with the leaded glass cabinet over was a steal for someone. In the UK antique brown furniture like that is pretty much the kiss of death at the moment, largely because it often doesn't fit in modern, small houses so you can pick up some really nice items for very little money...

I love how close your son is with you, reminds me of my own little guy. My boy (he’s 6) loves to be close too, I love that about him and hope it doesn’t change although I know it could when he’s a teenager.
Brown antique brown furniture isn’t selling at all here. I come across it at flee markers every year and they end up throwing it in a container when the fleemarked is over on Sunday afternoon. It’s sad, since some of them are really beautiful but no one is into that “style”.

Antique Furniture need to be cleaned with just Soap and Water using a clean Clothe. It will bring the beauty of the wood.
Somewhat North of 50 years ago, I attended a "barn auction" in NE Alabama. They started with the cows, sheep, and pigs, but I was in The Army, so I held off. They then got around to the household items. I felt an elbow in my ribs when a pressure cooker came up for bid, so of course, my hand went up. After a few bid/rebids, I realized a number of things: This was a NIB item; they had a number of them; just one other and I were bumping the price up; on past items bid on, the also-bidders were asked if they wanted it at the winner's price. I KNOW when to shut up! And so I did! Rather than bidding higher, I shut up! and got it as I pleased!
Just found your channel a few days ago, and now I'm going back watching some of your older vids. Just wanted to make a suggestion for you after watching a few of these auction ones. Download OBS (works for Mac or PC) to record your screen. It is a free program, no watermarks, and you could capture the audio of the computer at the same time! Could make recording these a lot easier! (obsproject.com - Open Broadcast Software). Hope it helps! Love the videos! I'll have to check out the store soon too. Us Edmontonians have to stick together!
Oh, and you could use the Mac webcam to record yourself too. Its a neat little program!
You can do screen and audio recordings with the native QuickTime software that comes on Macs as well

There's also another type of bidding and that's drunk bidding on ebay, I bought a car (scrapper) scrap prices were great at the time but it was day's before I found out I'd bought a car. We live and learn from our mistakes well I've not bought another car anyway.
You are right, the UK antique auctions are a lot calmer, however our livestock auctions have the same animated fever style as yours do..

What do folks think of ray fleck/ray flake up there in Canada? I've seen it in pieces in a few of your videos, but you haven't mentioned it, and it made me wonder if it's really common and boring there. In the US, woodworkers, antiquers, pickers, etc., talk about it a lot, like it's magical, and it can up prices. The Amish here have historically built things with a lot of it. It's one of their signature design elements.

That lawyer’s bookcase for $275....what a steal. I sold one for a friend who had issues with hoarding and the interest just over Facebook and Kijiji was insane. I had strangers tracking me down and phoning my house over it and it ended up going to a fairly well known Saskatchewan author for $750. I was really looking forward to helping him with clearing out a few treasures and then sadly he passed away, froze to death in a camper because he didn’t have a place to live due to his hoarding issues.

My step father was into antiques and collectables. He also took me to a few auctions. I assumed that talking method was normal after my cattle experience in Fallon, NV a few years earlier.
The auction lingo in America is the same as it is in Canada. None of that polite British talk for us!

When I used to go to auctions with my kids, I always told them to (a) keep your hands in your pockets and (b) do NOT attract any attention.
I once bought a 1965 Pontiac for $5.oo at auction. It needed a brake drum and wheel on one side. towed it home and made about $500.oo off it in parts.

Best auction I've ever seen was bunch of 'Back Country' auctioneers (Some of the best in the state) in the 'Big City', running an auction for a Children's Charity, "Sold $9650!" (for a Vacation experience that the buyer knows full well is not worth more than $1500), and it was like that all night... So fun...

Binge watching I haven't seen some of the older one's .
I'm really amazed at how cheap all the antique furniture goes. It all looked really nice to me, but when I converted those Canadian Dollars to Euros it amounted to almost nothing. People buy modern furniture for hundreds to thousands of euros here while it's not that nice looking or durable. I don't get it but I guess people aren't that into antiques anymore. My parents have an antique secretary which was quite expensive when they bought it but they haven't been able to sell it for a decent price so they hold on to it.
Auction method same in the western states for sure. Definitely for cattle in Fallon, NV. School trip years ago.
