I was adopted and after 50 years of not even knowing my ethnicity I decided to give Ancestry DNA a try. Not only did I find where my ancestors came from, I unexpectedly found multiple close DNA matches. Ended up discovering my mother, father, three step brothers, three step sisters and many, many cousins. Crazy!
Your niece seemed delighted to discover her new uncle. I liked the way you each drew each other out. I see a blossoming extended family. Lovely to watch. Thanks for sharing.
This happened to a friend of mine. She always knew she was adopted and embarked on a journey to find out who she was - to, as she said, maybe find someone that looked like her. Her birth parents were also teens, she found her mother, but that didn't go too well, and the mother wasn't sure who the father was. Along comes Ancestry, and she matched with an aunt, who checked with her brothers. When she found photos of the brother - there he was - that face that looked like hers! Luckily they live nearby and it has turned out wonderfully - she has 2 sisters, a grandmother, and a whole family that has accepted her with open arms. Her father was absolutely sick that he didn't know about her and that they missed so many years together, but at least they were able to find each other! Wonderful story - so happy for you!
I love this so much! I work at Ancestry, and I'm in tears that you found her, met her, and were instantly LOVED by her family! THIS is why we do what we do! Can't wait to see more of her, visiting your family in May!
Part of me wants to do the test because I know I have siblings & cousins out there I haven't met. But I keep hearing that your company sells the information to different companies/agencies. Is this true? Is there a way to prevent that? Thanks.
I just had a similar situation happen- I had done dna testing about 2 years ago and I recently went back to look at it and it said I had a 25% match - I found my dads biological father who had NO idea my father existed! He thought the pregnancy was terminated and then went back to war and lost touch. Now we have a whole second family we didn’t know about. Love that everyone is making these connections :) enjoy your time in the states! :)
IfYouMeetAWolf it was nice :) we’re already planning a vacation to the area in the next year to meet. We’re all friends on Facebook now in the meantime

Thank you for allowing us to comment. I tried to post a comment last night but the comments were disabled for this video. I am so in awe of you Alex . Not only for your visionary and gift of transformation in your work , but for having the compassion and respect for others. You are indeed a much needed Breath of Fresh Air, Alex. Please tell you sister and her family that many of us share a very similar journey ( especially in the US ) which is the journey of an interracial relationship that unfortunately not many people ( especially within the family ) wish to embrace . My grandmother (on my mother side ) was white ( British, Irish and German ) and my grandfather born in Ky in 1883(on my mother's side) family were Brass Ankles/Melungeons, classified as Mulattoes, up until 1924 when after 1924, they were re-classified under the One Drop rule as Negroes. My grandmother's family disowned her and my grandfather was scheduled to be hung in KY , when the scandal was exposed. They escaped to Ohio. And I won't go into the extremely complicated issue of race , especially in the US, but for many of us who live it , it is most definitely and defiantly a HUGE part of our lives, and not to be swept under the rug... . Fast forward to current day, and when I started doing my genealogy search, I contacted my grandmother's ancestors in the UK ( as they were looking for an ancestor named Joseph Hoyle who ( out of the blue ) one day left the UK for America and they didn't have a clue as to why or what happened to him. I told them what little I knew from recent research ( as our grandmother RARELY talked about her family, however we did know her family was from the UK...) and as far as I know my grandmother never saw her family again after her and my grandfather escaped to Ohio. My grandmother died in 1965 ( I'm a baby boomer ) …. My UK ancestors were a bit relucted at first, when I told them my story ( but when they did further research, they found that indeed their Joseph Holye ( my great great grandfather ) was their ancestor too, and they helped me immensely complete much of my genealogy work, and added my grandmother and our family to their family tree. Of course , I've also had a few inquires from other ancestors ( on my grandmother's side ) who were not so accepting and when I shared my story ( about our mixed race family ) , I never heard back from them.... My grandfather's family were the complete opposite. They loved grandma, and accepted her with open arms.. The moral of the story is : Always Always expect the unexpected in life. What a blessing to find each other. Im sure your dad had alot to do with it and watching over all of u. I found out at a young age that my father was married before my mom and had a son. They lost touch when he was like 2 but my dad mentioned him when he started to fall very ill. He would b in his 60's now and would love to find him. My sister has started looking and did DNA so hopefully we will find each other. Many prayers for all of u!!
Wow Alex, I don’t know what to say. That was cool. I like your new family. Particularly your niece, she’s special! Embrace and enjoy this situation. I envy you.
Genetics is a helluva thing! I had an instant bond with my long-lost little brothers and dad. I’m glad you enjoyed Colorado. There’s so much awesome stuff to do here...you’ll definitely have to visit again and spend some time in the mountains. My family is originally from Cripple Creek, which is an old mining town not too far out of the Springs. I bet you’d like it!
I finally found my daughter and her 2 kids, one is named Alyssa too! I was lucky to meet her, her husband, the kids, and her adoptive parents. How wonderful! We all shared some great hugs and keep in touch now.
This was BEAUTIFUL. I CANNOT believe how much this story resonates with my own life. The very story your sister talks about regarding the warnings she received about being with a black man is why, I am sure of it, the reason I was adopted! Now I am hoping to find my biological family knowing that this may never happen because I am biracial. WOW. I am so glad you found your family!!! Your sister is AMAZING!!!

Given the timing of you and your sister's searches, my belief system definitely suggests that your dad got you together. And that's as rewarding as the rest of the story. I hope Alyssa posts the video of the meet-up. So great to meet you!
How right you are 1ndygirl, just because you cannot see something with your eyes does not mean it doesn't exist. Otherwise how is it we can use electricity? Ps You and me know who the 'ghost' in Mary's House was don't we ! much love to you xxx
I have not had a chance to get back to this, I watched the video after posting this response, shocked to see I was first, and intended to respond in full after the video just to find comments disabled. I was in tears most of this video, it was so touching. I'm so glad you found your sister, and truly happy your sister found you in return. I hope all continues to go well for both of you and your respective families. I can't imagine what it would be like to find a family member I knew nothing about, especially one so sweet, as I come from a very dysfunctional family myself. I'm happy for both of you!
This is totally awesome, my best friend just also found out after 43 years she too has an older sister w/the same name as hers & that she is a part of a TRIPLE birth, the two boys haven't been located yet! Beyond words, so bizarre! So happy for you, Heather & both of your families! God Bless!
I found your TH-cam channel because of this video. I recently in 2018 have found my half brother, and it was amazing to finally see family that I resemble. I recently watch almost every video of your Potter House and I love how you took care of the family and Mary. I am totally impressed. Congrats on finding your sister!!
I have that same black hat, the “Greek Fisherman’s Hat”. My best friend, who passed away in 2017, left it to me. Never thought I would see something on your show that I actually have in my possession. Cool!!!
This is just so beautiful I’ve been binge watching your videos all night starting from when you bought Mary’s house and the restoration. I seriously have homework to do lol I can’t look away.
Looks like you had a lot of fun! Congrats on the new family! I would love to do DNA testing to find more of my cultural background, but I'm a little apprehensive of a company like that having my DNA and all of my information in their system.
Thats awesome that you both wanted to meet and actually get to know each other. BTW Lenny breau was big news here in lewiston maine usa and his brother denny still lives here and plays, nothing against denny but lenny was considered one of the best in the world by people like chet atkins. Pretty sure you already know that though? your father must have been pretty sharp himself just being in that company.
It is an indescribable feeling to meet new family for sure. It fills a hole in your heart you never knew you had till you meet them. Coming from someone who has done the same as you and Ive been so blessed finding them. 2 half brothers and one half sister. Life is full and happy, it's wonderful isn't it!!!!
What a heartwarming experience- thank you for sharing it with all of us. I love the way you composed and produced this video - such a genuine expression of the true meaning of family. Many blessings and endless new adventures to you all!
Yes I agree it is the most incredible experience of your adult life. 2 years ago I meet my Brother for the first time because of DNA. I waited 57 years and he had to wait 82 years. I am so happy for all of you.
So strange to get recommended this. My spouse just recently reconnected with his dad, and brother after 30 years. In that process he found out he had a little sister also. Named Alyssa. And we just named our 3rd child Dorian. So interesting. Happy you have all been reconnected. ❤️
What a WONDERFUL gift you both received in each other! She and your niece look so much like your dad!!! What a lovely family your sister has created. Loved this video and so happy it was such a warm, wonderful first meeting! ❤️❤️
I'm so glad you're sister and her family decided to be on camera. Your "new" family's awesome! Can't wait to see Melissa and your kids meet them. Jayman...
I loved the photos and story of your Dad. He was a good looking young man. A musician and he looks like he was super nice. It is too bad that he didn't live long enough to meet his daughter. Your sister is a treasure that you should embrace, after all, she is part of your Dad and you have so much to tell her and share. And now, you both can hopefully share your lives together. Her husband and daughter are so nice and they all seem to have embraced you. I think, for a first meeting it went really well. Hopefully you can all get together with both families. Congratulations on finding your sister. I lost my sister when I was 9 years old and she was just about 21. Don't let time go by, be brave!

What a lovely family to find you belong to. Congratulations! Your niece is adorable, I was shocked she is old enough to be married.
Awesome family, awesome new family. Congrats on meeting your sister!
I finally found my daughter and her 2 kids, one is named Alyssa too! I was lucky to meet her, her husband, the kids, and her adoptive parents. How wonderful! We all shared some great hugs and keep in touch now.
I was adopted at 3 days old ... so I understand your feelings. So happy for the way this turned out!
I just came back an watched this again, after reading Heather's blog. I enjoy your family/extended family. You all make me smile!
Thank you ♡
I get to meet my half brother and sister (they're full siblings). My hubz and I can't wait to meet them and cousins etc
That was so sweet.I am blessed with 7 very close siblings . I am so pleased for you, Heather and your families. Welcome back to Canada.
Thanks for sharing a very personal journey. I teared up several times, knowing what you went through emotionally.
🙋hi from Scotland hi Alex I am so glad you had such a happy trip and met your sister and her family I am so glad you met each other and share your life's well done stay safe take care Anne Scott from Scotland 😀
Hi from Michigan! 🙋♀️ Well I'm in tears...What a wonderful first meeting you had with your sister and family! Looks like the good ol' USA will be your second home! Thanks for posting and keeping us updated. Also can't wait for more post on The Potters House. Take Care! God Bless!
WOW I have been smiling every since the beginning of this video! What a blessing to have such a great 'new' family. How wonderful is this!
I smiled through the entire video as well! Thought I might be the only one, and glad to see I was not alone.
I've been waiting for this update!!
God Bless!
AWWWW! That was so sweet! You are lucky to have found her and her family and vice versa! Many blessings to you all.💟
I found your TH-cam channel because of this video.
This was nice. Happy you found your new extended family.
I had a smile on my face the whole time. I'm 1 of 11 brothers and sisters (and yes! same mom and dad). Family is EVERYTHING!
Just when I think I'm going to bed at a decent hour. XD
haha I'm still up too!
0:50 here
burning it at both ends😴
Hahaha,me too
That is the sweetest story! How lucky you all are.
I hope your Sister realizes what a wonderful, kind and classy man her brother is.
WHAT A Wonderful new family you have ...I wish you all love and joy the rest of your life
Looks like you had a lot of fun! Congrats on the new family! I would love to do DNA testing to find more of my cultural background, but I'm a little apprehensive of a company like that having my DNA and all of my information in their system.
Aww....Heather, Dorian, your niece and her husband.... everyone is fantastic!!! Congratulations to everyone!! xo
This is so heartwarming, there´s always room for more love.
Aww. So awesome! Thank you for the share. I was adopted I hope to someday I can find my family too.
Ya’ll are such nice people. ❤️ The world needs more of you. Thank you for sharing.
Well....we ARE Canadian, you know lol
What an awesome video! Thanks so much for sharing 😊😊😊😊😊
Can’t wait to watch now ... yay!!! 😁💕 stay safe and many blessings to you both 🙏🏻
So strange to get recommended this.
My spouse just recently reconnected with his dad, and brother after 30 years. In that process he found out he had a little sister also. Named Alyssa.
And we just named our 3rd child Dorian.
So interesting.
Happy you have all been reconnected. ❤️
This was so sweet I was tearing up there towards the end. Congratulations on meeting your sister!
What a WONDERFUL gift you both received in each other! She and your niece look so much like your dad!!! What a lovely family your sister has created. Loved this video and so happy it was such a warm, wonderful first meeting! ❤️❤️
I love Curiosity Inc. Great show! Wish I could travel to Canada but not well enough or affluent enough. But got an iPad that I can visit on
I lived in Pueblo Co just south of COLORADO SPRINGS. BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY.
Happy for ya!!! Family is the most important thing!!!
I'm so glad you're sister and her family decided to be on camera. Your "new" family's awesome! Can't wait to see Melissa and your kids meet them. Jayman...
"Growth is the sign of a healthy tree." Well said.
L. M. Dyre the tears that were building up fell when he said that 😭 ♥️
Looks like he won the family jackpot! What an incredibly sweet group of people.
So awesome🥰 Thank you for sharing, God Bless you all!😊
Again congratulations on finding your sister. Surprises keep.coming for you.😀
You are so loving and kind! Your beautiful sister and hubby is too! I love the whole new addition they are wonderful and acceptance is genuine!!
Awesome I am so glad it worked out great for u ... I wish I could meet my real dad and half sisters but when I called he denied me so his loss ....but u rock and glad again for u guys
I'm so sorry : ( you have a great attitude. Maybe he will change his mind after a while, and definitely your sisters!
@@TheCampfiregirl only problem is I just recently found out I only have about 5 years left I am dying atleast I know a made a difference in a few people's lives...
@@Slickinator we know some are not so welcoming to lost family. As you say, the loss is your dad's, and one day he might regret his decision and it will be too late. Some with the same negative mindset are probably best not knowing.
@@Slickinator Are your sisters old enough to make their own choices? Did he give them a chance to answer for themselves? When karma kicks him in the butt, it might be to late for him to make amends.
@@thatgirlfromdabronx9198 no as far as I know they might not even know about me but they are adults and even older than me and I am 43 now lol I never really knew anything till I was 16 and contacted him at 20 when I found out he is still in my hometown ... I did try talking too some of them who I think are his daughters on Facebook but they don't answer and he blocked me on Facebook when I said hi ... So I am sure there must have been questions asked about me but no one has replied ... I also don't want to cause problems with them as it's not their fault I was basically left at around 2 years old so he don't have anything about me...
Alex, I've recently come across your videos, and I am completely fascinated...enthralled, even. I've watched the series on Madam Rac, watched your videos with Hans and finished the Potter's House series yesterday. I saw that you were visiting Colorado Springs. I lived there for 15 years. My adult son and I ran cars on that track you were on a couple years ago. Then, I see the hotel you stayed at, and I was the mail carrier on that route before leaving Colorado in 2019. I have thoroughly enjoyed your adventures. Thank you for sharing them with us!
Your family is lovely. Heather does look so like you. Your niece is beautiful. They are so delightful.
Awe. Thanks for letting us into your personal life. That was special to watch.
She is very pretty and what a beautiful family!!
That was a sweet reunion video!🥲
what an awesome family you found.
I LOVE this video! What a blessing for both you and your sister and your families! In September I'm going to meet my "new" sister, who ironically lives in Colorado, when she and her husband come to Vermont to see me. Neither of knew of the other before Ancestry DNA, but for us it has been over 60 years! She's 7 years older than me and was adopted out as an infant. It really is a miracle isn't it?
