    A comedian and actor from Amsterdam, Rogier asked himself years ago what his dream job would be, and the answer remains simple: "to make people laugh." He is Dutch, and has worked incredibly hard to make sure you could never tell. Having spent his formative years in the US, he feels like a foreigner in his own country. His comedy is inspired by his life and personal experiences, and his love for accents, characters, and storytelling.

    As a dutchman, I must say this is a very accurate execution of an Amsterdam accent. I think it's very typical for the older generation, who just know english well enough to speak it but not hear it as much in movies / tv shows. Most young people have a way less exaggerated accent, because the english language is way more integrated in our lives. I would love to see a depiction of that... Cause I'm in that group and the accent doesn't seem very clear to me. I think the Italian and French accent is very noticable but I think they hear that themselves? Or is the dutch accent similar to that and we just don't hear it ourselves?

    • @GapeGang

    • @phoenix72999

      So for me I noticed two things studying in the Netherlands as a German person. Firstly, most young people have a bit of an accent, some don't but most do, at least sometimes. It is similar to this video, just far less extreme. But at least some words and some unusually pronounced "u"s are something that I notice a lot.
      Secondly, we had this one professor from Germany and it also took me a long time to notice where he is from and that he has a bit of an accent. It just sounded normal to me at first, and easy to understand. But then I was like "Oh, wait a minute, wow, really?"
      So it is probably just hard because your native language sounds natural to you, at least thats how I experience it.

    • @teqfreak
      @teqfreak หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Hertog101Your accent is probably stronger than you think, but you notice it less well since it is not your mother tongue. You don't hear what you do different, otherwise you would have corrected it. That being said, this video of course has samples that strong accent. I don't mean to imply your accent is similar.
      Many Dutch people think I have barely an accent when I speak English, but my British extended family and their friends who I meet are always curious where that accent comes from, or they recogbize it straight away as Dutch (and I don't sound as extreme as the example in this video at all)
      I'd you are really curious you should record your own voice and listen for it yourself.

    I don't have a problem with any of those, my biggest issue is actually the L! In Dutch the L darkens at the end of a word e.g. koel and cool. I know this is a also a phenomenon in the English language (like in help), but the dark L is much thicker in Dutch. I managed to correct this, once I realized I just had to open my mouth more and enunciate better. :D But cool is probably still one of the most difficult words for me to pronounce :P. My accent coach also told me :) my voiceless consonants are not plosive enough, especially my p's and k's. Perhaps :) I should also mention that I do not speak Randstad Dutch, but a Brabantic dialect. Love the video by the way!

    R(rrr)ogier, You are mistaken on the soft "r" when a consonant follows it. Consider my name: Marc. Solution for us Dutchies is easy: you change it into "Marrrrrek" or "Marrrrruk" same for verf: verrrref or verrrruf. There you go - still a rolling r. For the ending "r" you are right. We did not find a solution to that English horror sounding soft r, yet.

    As a Dutch person, I actually dislike it when Dutch people speak English like that (like, with a Dutch accent) and I try hard to not do it myself either. I find it pretty ugly, to be honest, hahahaha. 😂😂😂😂
