A comedian and actor from Amsterdam, Rogier asked himself years ago what his dream job would be, and the answer remains simple: "to make people laugh." He is Dutch, and has worked incredibly hard to make sure you could never tell. Having spent his formative years in the US, he feels like a foreigner in his own country. His comedy is inspired by his life and personal experiences, and his love for accents, characters, and storytelling.

thanks for the tips. Apparantly most people don't dislike the Dutch accent, but as a Dutch guy myself, I feel shame whenever I hear our countries leaders and professionals speak English with our horrible Dutch accent. I hate it so much.

The way we dutchies speak English actually make it very understandable for native and non-native English speakers.
For example, just listen how Dutch airtraffic controllers speak English.

    • @sirBrouwer

@@VeniVidiAjax both aero or maritime English is very distinct from regular English in general. It might not be a good example for normal English.
It's more that a lot of Dutch people will use what I call Dutch English . the wordt are English but the way it is spoken is very typical Dutch.

conversely i hate the way most dutch politicians speak dutch, because its a very particular sort of accent, somewhere between elite and "amsterdamian/hague". I wish more people spoke with a regional accent like it was back in the day

Obviously I have been living in England for over 13 years and gradually, learning how to relax the R's and stick a d at the end really pronouncing it like a d and finally the English hold on to vowels a bit longer than the average Dutch national does so, thirteen years in a wonderful marvellous country they ask me frequently: are you an African national ( so mostly South African ) in which I reply no I'm Dutch as I get the gratification I yearned for with another reply: my my I wouldn't have thought you'd be Dutch you sound nothing like them

    Dear Dutch people,
Your accent never (no matter how thick) impedes understanding, and in my opinion, it's not an accent that I would ever categorize as annoying!!
P.s. do learn the difference between 'make' and 'do' because this does make it hard to understand

In Dutch, the words "to learn" and "to teach" are the same in way, so often you'd see Dutch people saying "I learnt him that" or something similar. It's the small things that might stand out to native English speakers. I am very into accents myself so I love to hear those mistakes myself. If one is interested look up "stone coal English" or as in Dutch "steenkolen Engels". It basically originates bad transliterations from the dock workers back in the day when English wasn't so thriving in the Netherlands, but them dockworkers had to make due!

Being english and having learnt to speak dutch fluently after some time I appreciate your videos very much
Trying to learn to speak dutch while living in amsterdam was not successful as the dutch are so keen to show how they speak english that you don't have the chance to think of the word that you were looking foer
Its also amusing that dutch people when asked say that they speak english well when in fact the level is a lot lower than they themselves think.
    zelf overschatting
Which was the reason that I needed to learn as then at least I knew if we understood each other or not as dutch peols don't admit not understanfding something
I have heard that the problem is that english people never correct mistake while dutch and especially the french do And even to this day my step daughters biggest pleasure is to correct my dutch
Amusing is that you will always know the dutch person speaking when they say thaat they can't find it back
but on a personal note I am fond of saying hand shoes and nothing on the hand
Not to forget louis and his gladioli or the dead which was unintelligible fotr the english press not knowing about the nijmegen vierdaagse
The downside is telling the time
vijf voor half acht still causes me severe problems
as does the pronunciation of huid or hout
Care to explain where the ' steencoal ' came from in wim koks english and why toe clips are referred to as ' two clips 'instead of toe (teen ) clips ?
visiting amsterdam these days and asking for de rekening in a cafe I will still be answered in english, even after forty four years.
You seem to be making a career out of it , and good luck
would be nice if you added a few regional accents to you programme
liverpool and birmingham are very easy
    very impressive

Good video, you are a phonetics genious! ☺
There is also a problem when the Dutch pronounce the soft TH. They will say something like "my broder went to dat gadering ...". And also some S at the end of word will be too strong (like SS instead of /z/, the vibrating S)

    • @RogierBak
      @RogierBak  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks so much! And you're absolutely right! The 'th' and 'warm s' as I like to call it (what you're describing as a vibrating 's', which is how I've explained it to people as well) is tricky for a lot of Dutchies.

I think the thing about the English "w" is that it's a very distinct sound than the "v". I still don't hear the difference between these two in languages like Dutch, but apparently there is a difference? Is the Dutch "w" closer to "v" or "f"? I always feel like I'm pronouncing all three the same. Perhaps a word with all three in it might help.
