Some Chasing with the Elecraft KH1

- My KH1 turned up this afternoon! Within about 2 mins I had it out of the box and chasing a SOTA summit. My very 1st QSO was with Jeff KX6I on W6/CT-249, Apache Peak about 1000 miles south of me. I also got Steve WG0AT, (who was also using a KH1 - probably the first KH1-to-KH1 QSO ever!) on his home summit, the Hermanator in CO. I followed that up with a bunch of POTA chasing. I worked 12 US states plus Alberta, Canada in just about 1 hour. I also included a short sample of 20m SSB. Can't wait to get this rig on a summit! 73 de WU7H

Regarding the raspy side tone: this will be fixed! My KH1 is a field test unit.
I just love my KX2 but I cannot stop looking at the KH1. I need to get one soon. Thank you for sharing and letting us hear SSB too.
KX2 is my 'everyday' rig as well. KH1 won't be replacing it. It will be great for harder hikes where pack weight is an issue, and also for summits where setting up a larger antenna is not practical. Looking forward to giving the whip antenna a try here soon.
I don’t mind the sidetone. Reminds me of my first rig, the Heathkit HW-16! Had a great time with that old girl back in the 70’s!
It's only raspy at ZERO volume. Once I turned the sidetone up it cleaned up!
Nostalgic or not, that's a god awful sidetone for a several hundred dollar transceiver.
What's with that side tone though? That's pretty rough
I kind of like it. If you think that is rough, have a listen to my Ten-Tec Century 21 =)
@@lovethevdubI have a C21 - the sidetone isn't raspy at all
@@AE5Xyes I have one as well. I didn't say it was raspy. Most people don't like the way the C21 sidetone sounds. I think it is part of the character of the rig!
I see those knobs getting bumped regularly and that tone is 🤢
@@503Nick There is a lock function that is easy to turn on so you don't accidentally change your freq by bumping the VFO knob. Funny how many people hate the sidetone. I am going to see if changing the freq of the sidetone of it makes any difference.
Thanks for getting these vid's up Josh. I don't recall that sidetone sounding that raspy while playing around with the one they had at Pacificon. That sidetone reminds me how my FX-4C sounds...
Thanks Todd. Yeah I figured it out, see my latest video... no more rasp =)
First video showing it in action. Siede tone sounds not so nice.
I haven't tried changing the frequency of the sidetone yet, it might sounds better at a different frequency. It is adjustable via a menu.
Did you try it with the elecraft paddles? I'd like to see a video of that or comments on it. Also, with the whip antenna?
I did try it, and it's ok. A little stiff for my liking, but it is meant to be used while operating in a standing position. I will be trying it on a SOTA summit soon and will report back.
Did you try making any QSO's with the included collapsible antenna?
Not yet, but I will be taking it on a SOTA soon and will try the whip antenna!
OK, I'll jump on the sidetone bandwagon here. I didn't think much of it when I tried the rig in person, since I was using the internal speaker and expected crappy sound. But if this video is with an external speaker, I think it's doing its best to reproduce a *square wave* sidetone. At least, that's what it sounds like.
Apart from the raspy side tone does it have its own speaker i notice you were using an external one may be it was just for the video recording ?
Yes the internal speaker is TINY. At volume levels high enough to be audible in my video, it sounded distorted so I switched to an external speaker. In the field I would be using headphones.
If Elecraft come out with an SSB version at half the price I might be interested.
That's called a cell phone.
@@SP-nt4sr what are you talking about ?
Still not waterproof, but at least all the controls are such that it could be put in a clear plastic bag and operated, so an upgrade on the KX-1 ; really want a modern day PRC-316.
I did my first SOTA activation with it in HEAVY rain yesterday. It got a little wet but not enough to hurt anything. On my KX2, I use a clear shower cap, what I call the 'KX condom' =)
Yikes. I'm actually considering canceling my order after seeing these up close and personal videos.
Sounds like a handheld Mattel or ColecoVision from the 70’s
That sidetone is horrible!
Elecraft .... where you get less for more :(
Apart from being Electraft being as hard to find in the UK as fairy farts (or even Brexshit benefits), the price is a total joke. OK if you are a die hard Elecraft junkie, but this just doesn't cut it for me. Same as the Chameleon delta loop - £500? I'm making my own variant and will have change out of 1/10th of that outlay and I don't care if it get bent up in a gale.
@@rjy8960 I wouldn't buy any Elecraft equipment from the sole UK importer as I've had so many problems with them in the past. If I were to buy, I would order direct from Elecraft. Wouldn't cost too much more even allowing for shipping and import duty.
@@martinsalt1839 I tend to import myself and typically works out cheaper. I bought a LAB599 TX-500 from Desert Radio and was both cheaper and delivered before stock hit the UK shelves.
My first radio 👎
Thanks so much. Drooling 🤤 de n5vwn
