Thanks for stopping by! This channel is primarily about two things: my aerial explorations with radio controlled, remotely piloted aircraft, and my Summits on the Air adventures. Hope you enjoy the view!
Chasing KJ7LLS on 2m CW and SSB
Clint was up on Mt. Pilchuck playing with his Quansheng UV-K5 H/T that has been flashed with the IJV custom firmware. The radio can now do 2m CW and SSB. The CW signal was a lot easier to copy than his FM signal (which I didn’t record). The SSB was not great. Pretty cool for a $30 radio!

I just picked up this really nice Ten-Tec keyer plus single lever paddle unit for $20! Perfect for my vintage Ten-Tec fleet. Here I am working Scott on Table Mtn. in California (W6/CT-067). About 1500km south of my QTH.
SOTA Chase of N6MTB with QCX 20

I mistakenly said Bill was using a QCX… he was using a KH1. He was on a summit in southern CA ( about 1050 miles / 1700km south of me). I built this QCX in 2017 and used it on some rafting trips. It’s been in a box for the past several years.

After sitting on the bench for months and months, I finally finished repairing the Ten-Ten Argonaut V. Here it is in action chasing Rich AC7MA on a SOTA summit called Highwire (W7W/SN-177). A big thanks to Rich for help troubleshooting and moral support during the repair!

Quick chase of Guy (who uses club call NS0TA) with my “new” Ten-Tec 40 meter QRP radio. The radio puts out about 3 watts. Ten-Tec used to sell these as a kit for different bands for less than $100.

Where can I buy one ?
Man, I would love to do 2m (or even 6m) CW during SOTA activations. My one and only 2m CW s2s was prearranged. I need to start making a little time for it and spot... who knows... 73 de N4AAJ
I hope this ultra cheap Quansheng radio sparks a 2M CW revolution!
Thank you for posting this, for those of us who didn't see it in person! :)
thats a huge band!
Please redo. Which version of firmware added decode feature? 73 Doug EI2CN
How do you read what frequency your tuned in?
The glowing red line tells you the first digit. You can see it’s between zero and 1. Then you read the rest off the dial on the tuning knob, which is showing about 60. Since I’m on the 20 meter band, the frequency is 14.060
That is not a "Lyle gun". Made by US Army Ordnance and fabricated from manganese Bronze, Lyle guns were only issued to the US Lifesaving Service, which was incorporated into the US Coast Guard in 1917. This is Sculler Line Throwing Gun made for the commercial market.
Cool... I will pass that along to my father-in-law. It is his gun, not mine... he called it a 'Lyle gun'.
It is a common mistake to call all of that generation of line throwing guns "Lyle guns." The real Lyles were developed by Capt David Lyle, US Army Ordnance Officer Springfield Arsenal in the early 1870s. They were not available for sale to the public, thus several commercial founders produced their own version of line throwing guns. The book "The Lifesaving Guns of David Lyle" by Paul Barnett is an excellent source for thse Guns, including several commercial versions.

Heh, I love the minimalistic operation. Yeah, the rx is a bit difficult, but doable. Adam (K6ARK) did a SOTA activation with a pixie - it's more of a toy than anything, but it can make contacts! Are you using the stock 7.023 crystal? / de N0DET
Adam is who sent me this Pixie kit, and I worked him on one of those Pixie activations =) Yes, this is the stock 7.023 xtal... need to get one in the 7.03x or 7.06x range and then I might take this on a SOTA summit just for fun. 73
@@lovethevdub OK! I have built a couple for messing around - don't think I have made contacts on them (yet). I thought about a Pixie SOTA as well. Maybe the 3 of us could coordinate a S2S attempt sometime (might be tough on 40M 1/2 watt....but a thought). Fortunately, crystals are pretty cheap - I bought several for 7030 KHz...
That is super cool!
I have a ten tec century 22 great old rig.
Nice video Josh, I have 3 -TS-450S great radios, w2wc
It is a great rig. I'm very happy that I was able to repair it! 73.
Thanks for the QSO! Kinda cool to hear the QSB at your end.
I have 3 QCX Minis (but have built 4 - one for a friend) - great portable radio at a great price! I worked you on one yesterday from W0C/FR-107 - in fact, you were my 1st HF contact for the day! Met Steve (WG0AT) up there too with his KH1. Glad to see your QCX on the air! / 73, N0DET
I built one of these around 15 years ago and it still works beautifully. My first QSO was from my backyard in southern ca. with a guy in Arizona!
It’s a nice rig for how simple and inexpensive the kits were. Did you do any mods to yours?
@@lovethevdub I added an LED so it was easy to see when the radio was powered on. I may have done something else but I just do not remember.
Another great radio tnx Josh, w2wc
I like to get one of those radios, lol w2wc
Nice radio. Simple, elegant.
cheers u k

Cool radio!
That's a nice looking Ten-Tec!

Thanks for sharing a video
That's a sweet little rig Josh!!
Very cool. It was a good day on the summit
Man, I really like that quiet analog receiver and the Ten-Tec QSK!! // 73, N0DET
Keying tone sounds fantastic!! de KC1ATW
I use to cross-mode in my old Novice days in the early 70s, It allowed CW only Novice operators to talk with DX stations operating SSB in the old USA Novice segment, most stations were Canadians, as Canada like many other countries allowed phone operation on the lower end of 40 meters. To a New Novice it was a thrill to carry on a semi phone conversation, . It was a time when nearly all licensed hams knew CW so was more common than you will find today. It is also still perfectly legal as CW is allowed on ham frequencies. although some hams get rubbed the wrong way thinking cross mode is bad practice, even if legal, but I don't agree, It is so rare these days so really not an issue, 73 J.
Cw i my first love ;) 73
Great qso and great rig! My vy best 73 de IZ3GOA Sergio 👋
very cool hihi
Your side tone sounds so much better than mine. Was there a firmware update for that?
Crank the sidetone volume up to max. It sounds WAY cleaner and it’s not too loud.
Great cross-mode, pretty rare. Think I'll try it myself. Thanks 👍
I did one a couple of years ago in an SSB contest. Decided to see how many stations would come back. Got a few. Put a video up on it. Next week I did something even stupider with the CW counterpart and a microphone :-)
I can't wait to get my hands on a 3b
Well, if I knew you had a channel, Josh I would have been subscribed long ago. 73 de VE6JTW, Jesse
That's cool, Josh! (and Peter!) I have tried cross mode QSOs for SOTA (me activating on CW, them on SSB) and I have yet to be successful - too often the other op doesn't speak Morse Code! Maybe I need to work the more familiar callsigns! / 73, N0DET
Occasionally I surf the upper end of 20m and have tried some cross mode with voice stations. Not much success. I did try in a contest a couple of years ago. Managed to snag a few number exchanges. Made a video. Surprisingly, my little X108G uBitx by Xiegu does cross mode quite well. I can send CW and listen SSB. I just drop myself 1KHz up (or down) and that cuts through the voice clean enough. The old Plastic Fantastic FT747GX only gives me split, and the CW is on the USB side, so I can tune a station on CW without the filter and my CW carrier sits in his audio. Fine for 20 and up. No good for 40m
What a cute rig is !!
Very well done folks.
And so it begins! Very clever in indeed!🎉
Very nice is this capacitive touch? Does it work when your hands are very dry?
It is not capacitive… it uses pressure sensors.
@@lovethevdub brilliant 👌
I can't keep up with the fast dots and dashes. One day.......
Keep at it and it gets easier over time...
Qué sonido más bonito!!!! 73
Sounds like they changed the tone of the KH1? That sounded more pleasing to the ear than past videos I’ve seen. N7CCD
You have to turn the sidetone volume up or else it sounds raspy. In my first videos of the KH1 I had the sidetone volume at zero and it sounded terrible.
Those look very nice. I believe I need to keep an eye out for these.
Looks great, Thanks for sharing info, de KC1ATW
🤩
As I mentioned last time, the side tone sounds fantastic!!
Heard the slack notification in the background 😂
Between work Slack and SOTA Slack... I get those notifications 24x7
