- First look at an Elecraft KH1. Rig is fantastic, but my focus is more on the paddles. We take a look at the rig and take her on-the-air for a QSO with a member of the Long Island CW Club.
Great little paddles, but I prefer a little less force. So, I removed the spring from the paddles and replaced it with some foam material. Feels much better to me now. Of course this is just personal preference.
At the end I join the Long Island CW Club (LICW) Challenge, and exchange numbers with another club member on the air.
This is a very nice little rig that you can take anywhere. The best rig is the one that you have with you when you need it. This rig is always ready to go; just seconds to power-up and get on-the-air!

Love the sound of plastic wrappers de KO4DFJ
That sidetone would drive me crazy. It sounds like an old school practice buzzer.
I don't know...I don't have a problem with the side-tone, but I am used to my older rigs that make some ugly tones. Once I got sending I didn't think about the tone.
It only sounds like that when you have the sidetone set to a low volume setting. If you crank up the sidetone volume, it sounds clean. This will be fixed with a firmware update soon. Checkout some of my recent videos to see how it sounds.
Cool video Jim. I’m working towards earning one. I need to get my extra and my code speed up to 18 to 20 WP M.
Nice Will, This rig is a great motivator :-)
Just got my shipping notification. FedEx tracking says it should get here by next Monday.
Sounds good NT4SR. It is a very fun little rig! 73, Jim, W6JIM
Nice video Jim.
Thank you Army 👍
Nice video. Glad you found the speaker - that is the same one I've been using with my field test unit. I also removed the paddle spring and replaced with magnets - works great for me! It is a great little rig. If you crank up the side tone volume the side tone will clean up. 73.
Yes, I got that speaker to use on my Elecraft KX1. Nice little speaker. That is interesting about the magnets. I tried cutting the spring but I found that it did not reduce the force. Magnets sound like a great way to go. So far my foam is working well. I'm sure someone will come up with a great 3rd-party option. I will try that with the side-tone, Thanks! 73, Jim, W6JIM
Muy bonito 😻
Un juguete 👍🏻
Gracias 👍
Very nice and really small. I love my KX2 but I may have to get the KH1.
Yes, this is even smaller and lighter than the KX2. The guys at Elecraft make rigs that they like to use themselves. This one is literally a take-anywhere, deploy in seconds, rig (with the whip antenna). The tone is not fancy, but it gets the job done.
How do you do code practice with the KH1? Somewhere I had heard or thought I did that you can set the KH1 to not transmit and watch your sending on the screen. Alan KZ6B
Jim! Thanks for the demonstration and the very clear views. I'm particularly happy with your video because I have that speaker and plan to use it with the KH1; was wondering how it would work out, 73 de K0WHW Bill
Thanks Bill, could you share the source for that speaker? some others were asking. 73, Jim
Cool ...
TNX Jim!
De nada Stan :-)
Cw is always fun 73 :)
Hard to believe they released a CW rig that sounds like a worn-out clarinet with a sore throat. What ever happened to the sweet sound of an oscillated tone?
Hi Jim, it looks like that 3.5mm key jack will be destroyed after a few hundred QSOs, because of that, doesn't look or feels like its a good radio at all.
You judge that it "doesn't look or feel like a good radio at all" because it uses a 3.5mm jack plug/socket? 3.5mm audio mini-jacks have a failure rate measured in the hundreds of thousands, not a few hundred or anything like it. Literally the most stupid comment I've read in ages.
Where can I find that speaker
Don't like those paddles at all it moves sideways in the socket quite a lot. How's that affecting the socket soldered to the board inside. I use out board paddles with my kx3 the paddle that I paid a fortune for is in the cupboard.
Im new to CW....re-learned it through LICW! Btw, what is NR 107?
Hello to another LICW member! :-) I was making an exchange with an LICW member for their "LICW Challenge". In this event we exchange club numbers. I am number 107 with LICW so I was sending that to the other member who sent me 588i. The "i" is for instructor and is worth extra points! Thank you for your question :-)
What little speaker are you using?
Found it on Amazon a few years ago. No brand name. Called "Mini Portable Speaker, 3W".
The concept is interesting but the square wave pitch... is not really great.
I was told that there will be an update to improve the side-tone. But, sounds fine to my ears. Especially for a little QRP rig. I guess if I had to pick my very favorite Side-Tone it would be the Ten-Tec Omni V. The sweetest side-tone of any rig I have ever heard.
Thank you for your comment :-). 73, Jim, W6JIM
Are your dits and dahs bass-ackwards?
I use my thumb to Dah also.
Yes they are ! Good eye 👍 I'll have to share that story sometime :-)
Why "CO"?
In the LICW Challenge we exchange RST, QTH , Name and Club Number. The CO was for Colorado. Thank you for your question!
is it me or dose the build quality look sub par? I would like to know how the build quality is on this unit, as I know they are asking a premium price for it.
The whole idea is a bit sub par I think. But each to their own I guess.
Fisher price made it only costs 1200 dollars 💸🤣
This rig is not for everyone. I prefer my 7610 at my desk. But, if you want to carry a rig in your pocket made by a CW company second only to Ten-Tec (RIP) then this is for you :-)
Build quality looks poor, this vid has confirmed 'deletion' from my 'wanted' list! Thanks for the vid😊
Thank you for your comment 😊. The build quality feels good to me. Of course, there are many rigs that do not interest me either. But this one is lots of fun for me! Thank you again, I am glad my video was helpful to you. 73, Jim, W6JIM
Looks like a cheap frequency meter from the 1970's.
Your key needs to be reversed
What a rip off any good amateur could make it for 200 dollars it looks like a toy you can buy an icom ic 705 for that something very wrong there you would want to be crazy to pay 1200 dollars for that don't show it to your wife she will divorce you and send you for counselling 💸
It's not cheap, but I think you can get the base-rig for around $500. So, more expensive than the Xiegus but cheaper than the big-brand QRP rigs...
Wonder if I can use that key in my kx2? Hmmm de n5vwn
I'm waiting for Begali to make something compatible :-)
