- Always remember to slow down your sending, when asked by the other operator (QRS). Even if asked twice to slow down even more. If we are patient and carry on through the QSO, we give each other the opportunity to learn. Remember that we've been slower before and through the courtesy of faster ops, we were able to grow. Always remember the other way of slowing down: more space between characters and words. For those of us who learned by the Farnsworth method, this is more useful than lower character speeds.
Yes, I do that often. It helps slower ops to get used to faster code, but with a bit of slack on the spacing, instead of slowing down. That's what makes the QSO a learning experience of another variety. I also do that sometimes for non-standard words and names.

YES! this! slower characters make my brain melt, but more space between characters and words make it clearer, hands down!
This is great listening practice! I appreciate the subtitles and the variation in speed (you slowing down at times to match the other operator's speed). This helps me understand QSO format and structure a lot better to see real QSOs, especially when you exchange some info like antenna, rig, etc. Great work!!! Thanks for posting!!!

QRS PSE has become my most fluent phrase! Learning to use it has helped with my anxiety!!
i dont get why it is not automatic for faster guys to slow down to the speed of the other person. if i send at 20WPM you dont continue to send @30WPM.

Yes, please. For new CW OPs (like me), QRS always helps. I can totally relate to DK3AR. It can get nerve-racking trying to decode someone who's going too fast. You want to try to capture everything that's being said, but it can be difficult. So, thanks to everyone who responds to QRS requests to slow down (like Adam did here). DE K7RLN

Nothing more irritating than when I'm sending CQ at like 20 and some speed demon replies at 50. Brother I'm not that fast, if I was I'd have been sending my CQ faster.
Been a CW Op for 40+ years now, my average speed is around 25wpm. When requested to QRS I reduce my speed to that of the station sending the request. One of the main problems today with CW is the "automatic keyer and Morse reader". Both encourage a faster sending speed and quite often the other station might be using a standard pump key and not have a Morse reader. Not to forget the nervous newbi who very well might be very nervous, also there is the art of conversation, which seems to be lost, nowadays with the 30 second QSO or as I describe them, *the number chasers* where the QSO goes like (callsign ur 599 & 73). I remember the time when you might have had 3 or 4 guys rag-chewing on CW, Great fun & great times and not an auto keyer or Morse reader in sight. 73 and Vive Le CW

I think we all can send faster than we can copy CW, especially when using a keyer. I found out early on that you never send faster than you want to have sent back to you! I’m getting back into ham radio after 20 years away. I’ve been listening to lots of QSOs to build up my confidence to jump back on the bands…. CW exclusively.
Actually when I was around 25-28wpm I could copy faster than I could send nicely, but now I'm about even at 30-32wpm. I don't feel the need to go faster, as there are not many ops to work with anyway much above 25wpm. Recently in CQWW CW I was at 32wpm and it was super easy to copy callsigns, if you work 30wpm every day in ragchews.
Great Video Adam, and kudos for taking the time to show that QRS, is a God send to any op new or old. I've been doing CW since 1961, and have gone full circle. never been a devout cw op but love it just the same. and got my speed up to 30+ wpm and now on the way back down I'm comfortable near 20 wpm but still have days the old brain just doesn't work and I've swallowed my pride and asked the op to QRS. and 99% of them do. thanks to good ops I can still enjoy a qso. even if you don't slow the keyer down. but just space out the characters can help if your speed is moderate (25-35wpm) can still be copied if there is a good spacing to give the op time to grab it. thanks for sharing and 73 gud dx de Ellis WA1RKS

Ditto re character spacing… we up and coming, frustrated potential speedsters, have been told to start out with high character creeds. I can’t copy code faster than 13 wpm but I need the character speed at 20 or greater because I CAN’T “count dits and dahs, at any speed. 73 de W3GX / QRS

I'm a new ham, I can send at 25+ wpm fine, but it still takes time to process incoming, i find it much easier if people just leave more of a gap between letters, so my mind can catch up and not get lost, even hearing 25wpm, takes no longer to figure out the letter than 12wpm, it's just the gap between is important.
My fav. is CW 100 / 100 .. good job !

QRZ with no question mark after it means . "You are being called by...........". with the question mark it means, "who is calling me"??, - you should be using it otherwise you might get called a lid.
Yes, you are right. I am aware of that fact and usually use it properly, here must have become distracted
Always set a character speed of 20-25 and a Farnsworth speed of 15 and back off as needed. You can speed up as you get better, but save the higher speed for someone you know is learning with you and is at the same pace. Not a requirement, but a damn good suggestion.

Hello. They are input by hand in the video editor and the subtitle effect is set to "Typewriter" effect mode. I use Filmora X for my editing. I will make a video about this one day hopefully.
I’m a bug user but have a straight key hooked parallel. I know I can use the dah side of the bug as a straight key but I have lots of good straight keys to use so why not? If I need to QRS I’m more than happy to do so.

Great fist and operator etiquette! All too often I see CW QSO videos with operators recording their horribly spaced keying for the world to see, as if it something to be proud of 🤦🏻♂️. Usually those ops are operating at higher speeds and somewhere along the way correct spacing went out the window. Better to slow down and clean up the slop before proceeding to higher speeds, IMHO.

All in all, I think it's better keying slower and the message is fully understood. Too much operators want go so fast that they do with a lot of mistakes.
True, although trying to have a conversation at 20wpm is hard for me at this point. Super comfortable is 25wpm, 28wpm is ok, 30 and above I have to concentrate for open text.

I agree....it seemed like only a slight reduction. But I'm still new to re-learning CW after 44 years without practice.....
I reduced to somewhere near the speed of the station, if it was to fast still, he would have asked again for QRS. Going from 50wpm to 40wpm is still QRS, which means as you well know "reduce your speed" not "send slow".

Wedlug mnie to sa oddzielne drogi. Jakbys chcial grac na gitarze albo na skrzypcach. To nie jest tak, ze nauczysz sie na sztorcu, a potem „wejdziesz na nastepny poziom dwudzwigniowego”. Ja bym Ci radzil zaczac od dwudzwigniowego, zeby zaczac jak najszybciej robic QSO, to znacznie zmotywuje Cie do szlifowania znajomosci CW. Sztorca mozna dorzucic jako ciekawostke pozniej, jak ustabilizujesz 20 WPM co najmniej w odbiorze i nadawaniu.

Tak, poczytaj o Cut Numbers: T = 0 N = 9 A = A, these are used mostly in contests, but sometimes in QSOs also. 1TT for 100W is what I hear 90% of the time

CW nauczylo mnie, ze bedac systematyczym, zanurzajac sie w temacie (przez np. ogladanie filmikow) i cwiczac codziennie, chocby 10 minut efekty przychodza same. Teraz sie ucze grac na piano i dokladnie czuje ten sam mechanizm, jednego dnia nie umiem, potem nagle cyk i jest skok do przodu.

True, when I reached 30wpm I could copy faster than I could send. Now it's more or less balanced, the main challenge is spelling unusual words in my head fast enough to send.
I don't see the point in high speed cw on amateur bands. It's not as if hams have to clear a backlog of traffic. The old maxim was, "send at the speed of the receiving operator". Nobody is fooling anyone here. Most of that fast cw comes from automatic keyers. Anyone can use those.
Fast and slow are subjective. If everyone stuck to 10 WPM (which faster ops can slow down to, if needed), having a real conversation like on SSB would be super hard, mind you that normal speech is 100-200 WPM, so even fast CW 30 WPM is quite slow in transferring information. I would be quite frustrating telling someone about your new antenna or radio, when it lasts 15 minutes instead of 5.

What do you mean? I slowed down the keyer after hearing the QRS for the first time and he got my call after that.
