Do you even watt bro? What is the deal with HDZero's Freestyle V2 VTX output power

Having seen some other reviews, you might be concerned about picking up an HDZero Freestyle V2 VTX and not getting the full 1 watt rating out of it. Even though Chris Rosser specifically stated that you shouldn't worry about it happening to you, the question is still valid. Let's test mine with a method provided by the HDZero team to see if it was just his or is something actually wrong with this design!

im not a scientist and i dont spend much time on the bench but in the field mine flew as good as the v1 if not better. on a whip antenna.

yeah same experience here with mine. I would say just a bit better performance than I got out of the v1, but for sure not a quarter of the output I was expecting. Solid little VTX and a nice addition to the HDZ lineup!

Personally, amp tests that low or less than 5amps, i like to do them thru the meter probes than thru the amp clamp, if I'm trying to get precise with it. Less subsestiable to noise than the clamps are with DC. But thats coming from my 15 plus years as an industrial electrical maintenance experience, now as a electrical/controls/automation engineer. Other than that, i think you got the just of it very well, and did a great job. Me on the other hand... I'll probably be still continuing to rock out in the analog world, until they quit making stuff in analog. However, I'd really love to upgrade my large goofy looking fatshark box goggles 😅

I need better testing equipment, that is for sure, lol. Maybe some day I will have all the fancy stuff unused to have back when I used to do a bunch more component level work....I miss it sometimes. I bet the keep making analog for a loooooong time, so I'm sure you will be able to rock those things for as long as FPV is a thing. Also, id venture to say my 3 system digital goggles are way more funny looking than analog gear so don't worry about looking too funny, lol.

Here my range is not better than my whooplite. Roughly 100m. power consumption of the quad on idle ( motors unarmed ) is 0.02 amps at MAX output power in quad OSD. What do you think?

I think 0.8 amps to 1.3 amps is quite a big difference...

Yeah I would say that corresponds to what I was seeing. 8W @250mW output and 14W @1.3W output. As the VTX heats up the power and current draw drops down to around 12-13W @1W output.

I appreciate you validating that Chris :) right off with R1 in max output I settled into a little over 8W but had some peaks up to around 10W. Over time and with heat build up that settled into more like 13W and by the time I was testing R8 max that was about where it was at. I didn't want to run a fan through the whole thing so that the audio didn't get ruined, and that little thing gets to be a hot potato pretty quick, lol.
