Nicely said and greatly taught, thank you very much! BOTTOM LINE: Anytime you have two "LIKE" devices (PC to PC) and you don't have a "SWITCH" in the middle, you use a "CROSSOVER CABLE".
Thank you for the simple and easy to follow explanation. I had no ideal what a crossover cable was until I started checking the continuity of a few patch cables I made, and was confused by odd sequence of test lights from one of my cables, now I know why - Thank You.
Three of my co-workers who are newbies in large network settings used CROSSOVER cables from modem to routers and PCs numbering over 50 units. I tried to tell them that straight thru is the proper cabling methods to use but they wouldn't want to believe me (I, who has more than 12 years of networking experiences) and they arrogantly claimed their method is correct and it is working. Although yeah, we can connect to the net but experiencing intermittent disconnections.
How does Apple's Migration Assistant work? You can transfer data using a straight through ethernet cable between Mac and Mac or Mac and PC. Does Migration Assistant modify the pin numbers on the Mac NIC?
three Pcs of Windows 10 are connected them together with crossover cables. They can’t seem to share their downloaded MP4 files, however. Given their configurations, what could be the problem?
Dear Sir, please let me know that should I use straight or crossover cable in this scenarios... 1. First router to second router second router to third router to fourth. 2. And while I connect these four routers to each other should I use regular Ethernet to Ethernet ports or Ethernet to uplink ports or uplink to uplink ports to connect all the routers. 3. i used an optical fibre internet connection given with a modem which has two Ethernet ports on the first company provided router and the rest of the three routers are TP link Wi-Fi routers. I will be grateful if you could help me out on this thanks once again

Interesting, so how does the windows ethernet bridge work on windows 10? Currently i have two desktops. Desktop 1 has wifi and ethernet port. Desktop 2 does not have wifi. So to give my desktop 2 internet, i have desktop 1 connected to wifi, then on it I have created a bridge from WLAN to ETHERNET, and then i have a ethernet cable going from desktop 1 to desktop 2, and now desktop 2 has internet connectivity.
My router supports 1000 Mbps and my PC also supports 1000 Mbps, but I only get 100 Mbps because I use Straight Through Ethernet Cable. After googling around for hours, I found out that I need Crossover Ethernet Cable to get full speed of 1000 Mbps

Thank you!! Now I can confidently move on to the next module in my course!
Finally!! A good short explanation that actually explains it right
Thank you for explaining the why and not just the what (which is what everyone else does).
Great explanation. Like devices must have cross over. Thanks a million. Michael
I like this lecturer. Very clear and well explained. Thank you
i remembered it this way
1connects to 3 (13)
2connects to 6 (26)
and so on,
13-26-31-62
13+13=26
31+31=62
Thankyou Keith Sir, Very nicely explained.
The cleanest explanation... Bravo!
I believe this is Keith Barker. His appearance changed a lot. But as always a very succinct explanation!

but if your taking your ccna certifications test they wont ask that, they will ask you to know this.
Thank you so much, very good explanation
Nicely explained. Thank you.
I have a straight through and is in need of a crossover, are there any quick custom DIY i can make to the cable physically to change that?
Thanks for this now i understand already.
embarrassed that I forgot the pins. been a while.
