Online gaming doesn't really need a high internet speed. It does come in handy when downloading large games and updates though. What matters the most is ping time or latency, how long it takes for a packet of data to go from your device to the destination server and then back to your device. Lower ping times are best.
My connection to the internet is 50MB/s (megabytes per second). I only have a 10/100 Mbps (megabits per second) interface on my router. Why am I able to get a maximum throughput of 50MB/s? Shouldn't my maximum throughput be limited to only 100mbps or 12.5 MB/s? I don't understand, is my 10/100 router out performing its specs or am I misinterpreting something?
