    My favorite Ferrari as well -- you're right about the engine sound.. it's amazing.
    It's probably worth noting that there are other common very-high-dollar-fix issues with the F355, including the headers and valve guides. Top fixes for the Spider model are also incredibly expensive.
    This is one of those cases where being able to buy the car is a wildly different thing than being able to afford to operate it.

  • @373axle
    @373axle 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    3270lbs and 375hp is not fast Nick? That's an incredible power to weight ratio if you ask me. The torque is on the low side hence I imagine it doesn't feel like a turbocharged 911 or an M4, obviously.

    The 355 had 5 valves per cylinder. Thats why it sounds incredible. Today we can't have that because they all need variable valve lift and timing, forcing them into 4 valves per cylinder... Emissions ruining all the fun :(

    • @jeffk464
      @jeffk464 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably the variable valve timing does more than having 5 valves.

      And a properly tuned induction and exhaust.

    • @cartime7408
      @cartime7408 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Variable valve timing is more efficient than getting an extra valve. Both in terms of power and emissions. That's why we see more super-cars and normal cars with it rather than 5 valves. Take a look at Honda engines and see how much power they can output with very little displacement. For an example a Honda S2000 engine outputs roughly 240 hp from 2.0 liters of displacement, which equals to 120 hp/per liter. 375/3.5 means that this Ferrari 355 has 107 hp per liter and therefore it is in terms of "power per displacement" less efficient than the variable valve Honda engine. I know the Honda engine is alot smaller than the Ferrari engine and therefore making it harder to reach the same effectiveness, but the difference in power per displacement shouldn't be that big. In this and the majority of cases variable valve timing comes out on top.

    • @DR-ld4jn

      Oh 5 valves per cylinder like a blacktop 4age from the same period? Facinating.

    They just don't make them like this anymore. What I love most of all about the 355 is that it defines Ferrari appearance. The shape, the popups, quad taillights, the vents. Show this car to anyone, even the ones who don't even understand the concept of car and they will tell you it's Ferrari.
    By the way, Nick, I really enjoy the reviews! I've looked at the Classic Car Gallery site and they have heaps of interesting stuff there. I even saw Testarossa and Delta Integrale, maybe it would be possible to negotiate on doing a review of them? Or some other classics? Old cars are very interesting.

      Chris Wright Had that some convo with a successful British business owner here in LA as of recent. He said in America people celebrate other's success, while in Britain they tend to despise the wealthy man/woman.

    • @cswrighty
      @cswrighty 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Jeremy Clarkson summed it up so brilliantly in his review of the Ferrari 488 in the Sunday Times. Here are some snippets:
      "In Britain, Mr Normal sees a Ferrari as a reminder that his life hasn’t worked out quite as well as he had hoped. And he sees its driver as a living embodiment of the good-looking kid at school who got the girls, and the sixth-former who nicked his packed lunch on a field trip....
      You simply do not get any of these responses in other countries. A Ferrari in America is a spur, a reminder that you need to get up earlier in the morning and try harder. In Italy it’s a thing of beauty to be admired.
      Elsewhere it’s a dream made real. But in Britain it causes everyone to say: “It’s all right for some.” Which is the most depressing phrase in the English language."

      The Jag F Type when it first launched got a lot of thumbs up and people running over to chat about it. So far Ferrari wise the reception has been pretty good although you can see the look of disdain on some peoples faces. I've had this discussion as well loads, in America it's good to strive for success and treat yourself for your hard work. Here in the UK if you have done well you have to almost hide it a little. Weird Britannia! Mind you the government trying every way they can to punish you for being successful doesn't help either haha!

    • @canto_v12
      @canto_v12 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The gated shifter is a feast for the senses. It's not the smoothest or most efficient in shift speed because the shift gates cannot possibly be perfectly matched with the gear positions. It's purely an anachronism, but do you care when you hear that sliding and clicking, and move that polished ball, see and feel that oiled machinery in action?

    $10-15k every 2-3 years? hmmmm. As an owner of an F355 and having at least 10 people I know and talk to that also have 355 F1 and F355 cars, I don't agree.
    Annual maintenance including flushing gear oil, engine oil, brake fluid, oil filter, washers, washer fluid etc. is about $320 in parts. Some just do the $130 for the oil parts. Cheaper than my 996.
    Stuff breaks, tires need replacing, nothing to see here. The water pump is cheaper to replace than on my old E36 M3. Tires are 18" so it's $1k for PSS2s all-in and these last 5+ years. This by no means a cheap car to maintain and a 360 is better on the pocketbook. You also don't have to go all pedantic on making the car flawles as if you had a similar year Porsche or BMW.
    Major Belt service is "in the real world" every 5-7 years and is $7-9k depending on if you need/want to swap out worn parts on top of the service items. Things like shocks, body mounts etc. These all wear similar to my other cars from BMW and Porsche and cost similarly.
    When people say $10-15k, you should only have a 15k major if you either have a car that has been severely neglected, items that actually broke due to you being careless (like driving over a curb), or you are "adding" stuff like a header, exhaust, cats, etc. The factory headers will usually fail so aftermarket for $2800 or so are usually done. Most cars on the market have this done already.
    So, yes, the maintenance on this car is either similar or more than most other 1990's sports cars and $9k every 6 years is still $1500 a year plus at least $130 for oil changes (figure $500 with labor and doing all the fluids) and then you should have another few hundred or even $1000 plus (which other similar cars will cost similarly) on things that need to be fixed over time such as some sticky parts, mounts, rubber items (tires).... but 10-15k every 2-3 years is a new one to me, as both an owner of an F355 6 speed Berlinetta and an M4 in your favorite color (YMB);)
    I bought the car for the sound, my M4 is plenty fast with the mods.

    You need to drive the 360 Modena and the F430 Nick. Ticked all the boxes in the last 20 years except these.

    I'm impressed with Bryan. It would take a lot of restraint letting that F355 accelerate away slowly while going half throttle in the 911 ;)

    This and the 512tr are two of my favorite Ferraris. I promised myself I would own one of them at some point in my life.

    The 355 is the first ferrari I ever drove too, we had the convertible. I agree is the most beautiful, also sadly the last of the old school Ferrari, with heavy steering and heavy brakes

    Even today a well running 355 (mostly with 2.7 Bosch electronic) isn't a slow car, does speedo about 300 km/h - there are not so many faster cars...
