I was wearing hearing protection/radio headphones while mowing grass next to a 4 lane highway. I heard what I thought was a low flying jet aircraft and looked up from the grass. What I saw was a Ferrari 355 in the passing lane going between 120mph and 150mph passing the other cars like they were standing still. My first assumption was correct,, it was a low flying jet aircraft.
I noticed that Ferrari maintains the same styling of its mid-engined V8 model for two generations at a time: 308 and 328 348 and 355 360 and 430 458 and 488 The latter generation borrows the same basic shape and design of the previous generation that it's been paired with. It explains why, for example, the 488 looks so similar to the 458, and why the 355 has a comparable shape to the 348, and so on. We won't see a haul over in styling until the successor of the 488 comes out.
The F355 is essentially a MUCH improved and modernised 348... In other words, they didn't start with a clean slate, but the car was different enough to be distinguishable from its predecessor. The 308 and 328 are pretty much the same car, albeit, the 328 has a larger engine and some minor styling tweaks.
@Edward Oliver yes they drop the engine out through the bottom . Also I looked it up and that Ferrari that he's driving is still on the road :) and only has just under 13000miles on the clock
The f355 was the last of the analog Ferrari's. After this they were drive by wire. This was also the absolute last of this classic Italian design language. The 360 looks completely different. This is also the first production Ferrari to introduce the F1 style flappy paddle shifters. I'm a big Clarkson fan. Thanks.
jeremy is totally right about the 355 being the best car he's ever driven and if you watch apocalypse clarkson you'll see his 355 at the track day sequence of the film which brings together the best cars handpicked by clarkson and two professional race drives at the time
The 355 is one of my all time favorites. Being that it is actually relatively affordable for a middle class person but it brigs you everything you can ask for out of a Ferrari (albeit on a slightly lesser, slower scale). But id have to say 348 > 355 > 458 in the way of engine sound. As they get newer the sound just get more and more uniform. The 458's sound great, but under hard acceleration they just make a steady hum until redline where the pitch gets higher as it revs out but the actual sound is the same boring hum. The older cars werent quite so tame, they screamed and sang rather than steadily humming. Much more of a "raw" sound. They made clanks and bangs when the dogbox shifts, accompanied by crackles and pops from the fuel in the exhaust. They would burble and shake at low revs and the sound you could make at any speed with the clutch and the throttle in those older cars was mesmerizing. To be fair the new cars only sound "boring" because every little mechanical detail is properly sorted and theres nothing out of line to make any strange noises. But for that reason, i think there will always be a spot in people hearts for old Carb'd monsters. Not only do you get more sound but with carbs you get the smell, you even get the taste lol. An old carb'd ferrari v8 or even an old 240z with the original dual carb i6 would be my dream weekend car. The just sound so much more lively than any direct injection car out there.
ive had the pleasure of driving this car (briefly as i was only 16 and a bit nervous about driving such an expensive car) and going to a track day with its owner. easily the best sounding car ive ever heard and very fast. truly an awesome experience
I drove a 355 on a track day once and I hadn't even got a full lap in when most of the interior fell apart. The glove box fell off, the rear view mirror fell off and everyone squeaked and rattled...but like Jeremy says it sounds incredible and he's right!.
After driving a 360 Spider, I can honestly tell you I now understand what all the fuss is about. It makes you feel like a rich girl on her sixteenth birthday, you don't even care that people are snapping photos or waving at you because you're so focused and awed with the machine you're in. And they aren't scary like a quick muscle car or something, it just invites you to go faster and faster and faster... which is a problem since the speedo is absolutely tiny.
I'll never forget the day I heard a 355 Challenge running. I was a car groomer as a teenager working at Ferrari. Minimum wage for maximum fun and seeing and speaking with the some really wealthy people. Of course none of them could care less about the lanky little boy washing cars but I was also then used to loud cars, all day everyday....until one afternoon something arrived. It was a present to the sales manager from Ferrari themselves. He had gone to Italy from New Zealand on business and drove a 355 Challenge on the Ferrari track. He loved it so much they sent it to New Zealand as a gift for being a great dealership manager. Now at this time we were selling 360s and 430s, but my god! At idle I clearly remember that it was shaking the air inside my lungs, I've never since heard a car that would actually vibrate my internals just idling. The sales manager being a salesman at heart sold it a week later. The customer wanted it road spec so out came the roll cage etc. Even at 17 I remember thinking that if Ferrari gifted me a car with such pride in my work id be forever thankful and never sell it.
I once entered a competition where 10 statements about Ferrari had to be put into order of importance. In case there was a tie, entrants had to complete a sentence beginning with ‘I’d like to drive a Ferrari because …..’ using no more than 16 words. My sentence was ‘I’d like to drive a Ferrari because everyone would know I had arrived before I’d even set off’.
I love the 458 but the 355 is still the one I dream about most. However I imagine that if I drove the two back to back the 458 would blow my mind just thinking of how badly it humiliated the 430 in that drag race.

Great video. Buying your first Ferrari is a great experience. In fact, I think that it is just as much about the buying process as it is about owning the car. It is to be savored. You must suspend reality and just give yourself to it. You have to disregard the naysayers about how much it costs to buy and run - because they are right. It is irresponsible and a more than a bit excessive. But It is just one of those things you have to take on pure passion. And it is worth every penny.

Etc etc. Just one of the best car brands ever. Reliability is Sketchy on some but when you own one, it's par for the course.
I like how there was a 246 Dino just parked on the Ferrari lot like any other used model. Back then they were probably asking 60k for it. Now its worth almost a half-million.
To this day, the Ferrari 355 is beautiful car. Whether its stationary or blasting through country hills, it is timeless classic. Given its exceptional design and performance, I suspect it will quickly garner classic status, leading to a considerable jump in price.
3 colours that would fit a Ferrari well: Red (Yea, the most cliched one) White (Miami Vice special..) Black (Ooh yea. Preferably with a slight metallic polish)
Calvin Scherbarth 458 might be a technological marvel but it just lacks something for me, it's too technical, not very good looking form the front, kinda soulless.
Many people can afford them but you have to be ok with the service costs. Minor service is about 5 times the price of regular car each year. Every 3 years its an engine out, belt change, Major Service, costing thousands of dollars. If your 355 has standard exhaust, you'll need to change it as it will be getting ready to burn through by now and if you leave it you can burn the valves and be up for another fortune. If you buy a spider you have to make sure the oil in the rams is level, etc, etc...

Etc etc. Just one of the best car brands ever. Reliability is Sketchy on some but when you own one, it's par for the course.
Prepare for disappointment when you actually get one...
I like how there was a 246 Dino just parked on the Ferrari lot like any other used model. Back then they were probably asking 60k for it. Now its worth almost a half-million.
In NYC found one with F1 gear box 22‚999
2:45 ... all day long ...
I guess its still hard buying an expensive car, even when you've already got money.
i remember being a kid and seing one of these driving around my neighborhood... i will never forget the sound it made. sounded like a f1 car
To this day, the Ferrari 355 is beautiful car. Whether its stationary or blasting through country hills, it is timeless classic. Given its exceptional design and performance, I suspect it will quickly garner classic status, leading to a considerable jump in price.
2020 anyone?

More than you can afford , Pal!
Didn't know Creep is that old, I was alive then as well which is making me feel old watching as it looks like the 70's.
it's only done 13,903 miles as of June 2021!
3 colours that would fit a Ferrari well:
Red (Yea, the most cliched one)
White (Miami Vice special..)
Black (Ooh yea. Preferably with a slight metallic polish)
And yellow .......
l would go whit White
Silver?
Still one of the greatest Ferraris. I still have mine after 11 years.
K
Is the battery flat... Lol.
4min58sec. Coincidence?
..it has to be..it's a 355..!! ;)
Well seeing as the 458 didn't exist at the time of this video, yes a coincidence.
Calvin Scherbarth 458 might be a technological marvel but it just lacks something for me, it's too technical, not very good looking form the front, kinda soulless.
It's not the car you need. It's the car you want even if you don't drive it. Styling so eye catching, it could be hung on a wall in a museum. 👌🏼
I remember seen lots of 355 during inauguration of Sepang F1 Circuit Malaysia@end of 90s. Love the yellow 355 Spyder..👍👍
Kinda nervous about him driving on the wrong side of the road :O
"Only 5000 miles" ...maybe 'cause they fall apart at around 8-10000miles 😆
I stopped eating my cookie when I hear this Ferarri.
Awesome music in the background. Driving Ferrari F355 is the best thing you dream with.
