    The Ferrari F355 is my favorite Ferrari... almost. I drove this 1997 Ferrari F355 Berlinetta to explain exactly what I mean.

    I have owned a 355 for 12 years. I can say that in my case the "almost" issues are greatly exaggerated. Most of these cars do less than 3000 miles per year. You can absolutely go 7 years between engine out services. Also, the valve guide are not 100% failure. there are many 355's (including mine) that have the original valve guides without any indication of needing replacement. If you do need them replaced, you piggy back that on an engine out service and save a lot of dough. I proactively replaced my headers at a cost of $3K. Lastly, my independent Ferrari mechanic charges me $4500 for the engine out service. Those are real numbers from an actual owner. Treat the car right, and it will in return. Drive it, it needs it. When they sit for long periods of time, they tend to have issues. By the way, I'm not some rich guy. These cars are very affordable. Get one before the prices spike.

      most f355 do explode but there are many f355's that didn't go to that expensive maintenance and cost a little to run. Tyler Hoover's ferrari is one of those unlucky ones. he also did a mistake picking it up as the first owner honestly said to him that it had engine problems and there is a probability of explosion ...the first owner actually said to him also that he just called a tow truck and towed it...which if he did run it at that time ... it had a huge probability of bursting into flames.....i wished that parker nirenstein (Vehicle Virgins) do that instead of listening to his trusty mechanic that the car was safe to run

      There are 2 reasons why I hate Ferrari.
      1) they burst into flames.
      2) they're too expensive for what it is. IE: California, laferrari,599, f12 berlinetta, 458, 488.

    One time in Orlando Florida about 2003, I was sitting at a stoplight waiting for it to turn green. As I was waiting, I heard possibly the most amazing automotive sound I have ever heard before, or since, coming up behind me. As I sat there it very quickly arrived. It was a bright red Ferrari F355 racing to catch the green turn lane signal for entry onto the interstate. That thing raised the hair on the back of my neck as it arrived and raced past, just from the sound alone.

      X3MK0218 - Owning a Ferrari is better for the following reasons: You build up a bond with it. You can take it for a drive whenever you want to, permitting the conditions are right. You get to look at it in the garage. If you are wealthy enough to own a Ferrari, you can afford the maintenance.

    • @canto_v12
      @canto_v12 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you own one, you can go into the garage and stare at it anytime.
      You don't need to reserve it, and you have no limitations on what you can do with the car.
      Whether full ownership is worth the maintenance hassle and costs, depends on what the person can afford and is willing to put up with.

    • @bastc
      @bastc 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's not entirely true. Being able to buy an 80,000 euro used Ferrari is not the same as being able to afford the returning tens of thousands euros to maintain it over the years. Lots of 'dream cars' end up being sold again in bad condition at a much lower price because of this.

    Very nice video. I have had a 355 spider for 10 years. it is a wonderful car to look at and drive. It is a fun car for me and I have only put 5000 miles on it since I bought it and it now has 32000 on it. It is a 1999 and as for maintenance, I had the belt service done last year for the first time in the car's history. I always drove it carefully and never extreme and if you are not taking it to the track every weekend I think most 355 owners will tell you that the 3 year 5000 mile belt change is not necessary. If you drive it like a normal car and maybe once in a while drive fast on the open road 10 years or 10000 miles before belt change should be fine. This would give you an average cost of $1000 a year plus the occasional o2 sensor or other incidentals. I have been fortunate and have had no major issues since I owned the car except a radiator fan coming loose and scoring the radiator core. After much aggravation of removing the damaged radiator and taking it to the radiator shop, the radiator repair was $45 and I bought 2 new electric fans for the radiators and put them in myself for $75 each. if you are interested in one of these cars being able to do simple repairs like this radiator will save you a lot on the maintenance cost of the car.

    My older brother was once loaned an F355 (just like this one) by his boss. Being 17 years old and a huge car nut, I was the first person my brother came to with the car. We had an absolute blast in that Ferarri. Even better, when returning to drop me off home, a girl down the street who I had a HUGE crush on was walking by my house at the time. The car helped break the ice and I got a few months of good lovin with a girl way out of my league.
    That day with that Ferrari will always be one of the best days of my life. For that reason this particular model will always have a special place for me.

    I bought one of these three years ago from the original owner with only 18K miles. He kept all the receipts and I totaled them up to be just under $130K. Belt services, valve guide replacements, new convertible top, new leather seat covers, etc. It still gave me an intermittent "Slow Down" light that was most likely due to an exhaust ECU that I never got around to. I had it for a couple of years and sold it before it left me homeless. It, by far, had the most glorious sound at 8500 RPM. I replaced it with an F430 which is way faster and has much lower maintenance (no cam belts). It just doesn't sound as good. I do miss that car though!

  • @gmonsen
    @gmonsen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    Couple of notes.
    The engine has some maintenance and reliability issues probably because it was so extreme for its time. It made 380 bhp from 3.5 liters, while the Testarossa of a bit earlier time made the same hp from 5 liters. A major assist in achieving that was using 5 valves per cylinder to fuel it at the extremely high 8500 rpm limit in order to make the power it did. That also was a major cause of its mechanical/maintenance/reliability issues. Especially, the valve guide issue.
    Doug finds pop-up headlights dated and odd and always comments on them. However, they allowed the front hoods to be very low in cars like this and that low front hood really contributes to the "go-kart" feel and sensation when driving cars with pop-up lights. It was a way fro manufacturers to meet the headlight-related height regulations while keeping the hood so low. Today, there are many more regulations regarding the front end that make it impossible to use pop-ups and have a low hood. All cars have to have relatively high, stubby front ends as a result, which eliminates that pure "go-kart" thing once and for all.
    The F355 is a great driver's car. No doubt about it. It was the last of the old school baby Ferrari's that started with the Dino's and came before the much more modern 360 Modena's. It was the transition car for Montezemolo, who took over running Ferrari while the 355 was in gestation. It is a very desirable car, but I am not sure it's styling is much more than a great updating of the bland-looking 348's, which are terrible cars to drive.

    My favorite Ferrari I drove when I was a Ferrari salesman in the early 90's was a 1966 330 GTC. 300hp with intake noise & exhaust note that was truly a symphony. I agree with you about horsepower. It's more enjoyable if you have to use skill to drive through corners to keep speed versus just point & shoot. The 328 was a very nice driver too.

    It saddens me that for the briefest of moments, cars like this seemed within reach. Now that I'm finally reaching a level in my life that I could potentially afford one of these, they suddenly become desirable and jump in value. Likely to only go further up in value and further from my reach... :c

    • @MrPro10
      @MrPro10 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      NsKrewtable Keep the faith! The 355 is my all time favorite car (Well maybe behind only the Mc F1 and LP400 Countach) and so I feel your pain in trying to aqquire one! You have to remember there was actually a good few years where they were "affordable", 355s lost around half their original value and they stayed at that level for around 5 years.
      The current bull market is insane and it's always impossible to predict the future but history would suggest it wont last forever and it seems to be running out of puff in the last year.
      A lot of the adverts you see are just total chancers trying to make a tidy profit on a car they've owned for a while. But how many are actually selling at those levels? Some ARE but I'm noticing a lot of cars at the moment that seem to stick around in the classifieds for a long time.
      It's not a co-incidence 355s went up just as you got to that financial level in your life. I was chatting to a dealer recently and they pointed out how the younger generations don't really care about the older stuff, the cars that have appreciated are the ones that were on the walls of guys growing up in the 80s and 90s who have recently got wealthier.
      The 355 seems to have topped out at the entrance point of 458s, hopefully 458 prices will keep the 355 from ever getting too insane. Other cars like the 570s and the Hurrican will hopefully help to keep prices down too.
      Also going back to the market at the moment, it will surley come down again, it always has done in the past! A lot of people are buying cars now as investments and a lot of those will jump ship when the market plateaus out and they see there's better places to put their money

      @mr.butterworth4216 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They were always very expensive to repair and maintain however. But being a high-performance car, and a Ferrari no less, the 355 is prone to market bubbles. Fueled by trends among the wealthy to own older sports cars of a certain pedigree. Much like has occurred with the Porsche 993 Turbo, and E30 BMW M3, which were once just old cars are now through the roof on market value, but they may not remain so forever... The 355 is a fine car, but it's not the F40 after all.

In my garage the top of my 355 GTS is mostly UP - to use the beauty TOPLESS. And that you can never do with a berlinetta !!! You get the MAXIMUM FEELING of the 355 without top !!

    Ive driven the 360 with gated shift. I know how you feel its the perfect and most precise way to change gears. Very satisfying visceral and mechanical feel. I dont know why every manual car doesnt have this.

    True story here: When I was about 12 my dad took me to Ferrari of Atlanta to drool. He wandered off with a salesman and they left me to daydream and enjoy the Ferraris. No one else was there and it was so quiet I had to gently close the doors of the cars to not feel like someone was going to go "SHHHHHH!!!". The 355, 456, and 550s were all in the showroom and I was drawn to the red 355. I finally figured out how to get inside the car but I had a problem. Once in and the door shut I had no idea how to get out of the car. So there I was trapped in a Ferrari at the age of 12 for about 10 minutes until I finally figured out the inside door handle.
    Child proof they had made it (almost).

    So, the main complaint here is that this 355 is too expensive to maintain long term... So it's like a gorgeous Italian woman; hit it and quit it. LOL.

      Timbuck2 It's NOT too expensive to maintain long term, if you've got the moola... and more people than ever before do. That wouldn't include me, or him, either, by his own words (yet), but it's certainly not impossible. For me, the question must be, is it worth it? One could own and run, and maintain, half a dozen pretty nice sports cars for what this one costs to buy and keep... Which is why I don't even THINK about Ferraris, much.

      I love an S2000. I teach for Track Masters Racing (track day events in Nor Cal) and I've had several students with them. I drove one student's car around Laguna Seca three laps after spending most of the day instructing in the car. I wanted to show him a couple of things. It's a really great car.

    Doug, I've driven a Mazda 626 from the late '80s that had a Sport Mode. I'm not sure how common Sport Mode was in the '80s and '90s, but there it is.
