  • Ben Cramer fast-tracked his way into becoming one of my favourite male artists with a string of infectious recordings that included his first hit, "Zai Zai Zai", popularised in Britain by The Tremeloes as "Suddenly You Love Me", and his Dutch treatments of songs by the outstanding British songwriter, Les Reed.
I don't think it would be an exaggeration to describe Ben as a "national treasure" of his homeland. Now in the sixth decade of his career, the guy has accomplished so much with his recordings, twice representing The Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest, and going on to achieve great success in stage musicals like 'Evita', 'Chicago' and 'Phantom of the Opera'.
Ben has a great affinity with the music of Les Reed, whom he met at the IV Festival Internacional da Canção in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1969. He immediately fell in love with the maestro and Barry Mason's "Love Is All", performed at the song contest by Malcolm Roberts, subsequently recording both Dutch and English versions and featuring it in his act. In 1970 he released his mononymously titled Dutch language album on which he included Dutch translations of two of Les's songs - "Gina", and the rarely heard "The Happiest Day Of My Life", locally titled "Nu Ik Je Vraag", co-written with Geoff Stephens . This recording was also issued on a single. More than 50 years on Ben is now firmly in the Top 5 of artists to have recorded the greatets number of Les Reed songs.
