One of the things that you can't see on compilation videos like this is how Pirlo controlled the game. Besides the obvious skill of passing, dribbling and shooting, when you watch entire games you can see how he controls the pace of teams, how he chooses which side to overload to attack from and how he is in charge of keeping possession. A true master.
All of his goals felt like moments of brilliance. You'll rarely find a midfielder as technically gifted as he was. For me, Pirlo was the best in the world. I vividly remember a game the year before he retired. Juventus was playing against Udinese, and in the final moments of the match, Pirlo was awarded a free kick from about 30 yards out. It was injury time, and the whistle would blow right after the kick. He stepped up and scored with incredible precision. That goal felt like a highlight reel moment-pure magic.
Pirlo was unique in many ways. He was the only deep play maker that would design the game from his own box and thanks to accurate long passing, he was able to lead an attack from right on his own box edge. His balance was as good as a ballerina and only comparable to Maradona and Zidane.

Go back through the decades the Midfield talent was insane but just even around the 90's and 00's midfielders ruled the game and were totally appreciated. But since I'm grown up enough to know that having idols is not normal I will just say that Pirlo is (probably) my all-time favorite Italian player... almost 50-50 split in likeness between him and Paolo Maldini.
