He was phenomenal. He could change game to how he saw fit. Saw it with my very eyes countless times at old trafford. One minute he'd be playing one touch with his team mates and advancing through a tight midfield the next he'd just switch it and spray homing missiles 40/50 yards. If he was anywhere near the area the other team couldnt afford to give him a yard otherwise he'd set his body up and munter it in. If they gave him no space he could use every part of his foot to get through and keep the ball moving constantly. Scored an ungodly amount of headers as well considering his height (which goes unnoticed). With the exception of a very few who visited old trafford in the champions league id never seen another player have so much mastery over a match. He controlled it all, everything went through him. What a player! Short passes, long passes, long shots, close shots, headers, press resistance, one touch passes, tackles, slide tackles, interceptions, dribbles etc and he could do it all very effectively. It’s hard to find complete consistent midfielder’s like him nowadays. Truly a legend! No wonder he was one of the 5 world class players for SAF.👌👏💯

Paul scholes was the finest mid field player England has ever had . His weight of pass, precision and accuracy was second to none. When he pulled the trigger there was no stopping it, and I watched him score many goals both for England and man United. He is definitely one of football's greats. A truly entertaining player.

Brilliant comp. Thanks for highlighting his ball-winning ability too. His tackles were often dirty but his aggression and ability to read the game meant he was an absolute engine for winning possession back. We only have Opta stats for him from when he was 35 and older, but based on just that his tackles and interception rates are higher than any of the top creative midfielders in Europe - higher than Gerrard and Lampard too, who people claim were better defensively. Except that as the video shows, he actually could tackle. His "bad" tackles were often deliberate and he got away with a lot because of the myth that he couldn't tackle lol
What a load of shite. Clear evidence in this video of great slide tackling ability. He'd be capable of stupid costly fouls every now and then, giving him a bad reputation for his tackling ability, but really he was right up there, especially slide tackles. Not much in it between him and keane, on-the-floor tackling, and both equally had reputation for fouling, 1 a bit dirty 1 a bit clumsy. Edit: nvm on 2nd thought, having watched a highlights video of keane, he was unmatched when tackling😂
I know its crazy but i always thought that was with a plan to sometimes be clumsy have a name for that and so getting favours from the ref instead of a notorious name like some players.
And people compare Gerrard and Lampard to him. They couldn't cut it deep in midfield, neither had the nuance or intelligence to dictate games the way Scholes could.
As a United fan I was always glad Paul was under the radar. The media would focus on Giggs or Beckham and other teams midfield players like Gerrard and Lampard. It meant he wasn't relentlessly pursued by teams like Barca or Real and perhaps managers coming to Old Trafford would be more worried about other players. Watched his whole career at Old Trafford. He was relentlessly awesome. He always knew what he was going to do with the ball, before it arrived at his foot. Had a hard shot from distance too, so if he moved close to the box, a defender got sucked in to him close him down.
I've been going through clips like this of all the recent greats - Xavi, Iniesta, Gerrard, Modric, Pirlo, Lampard, KDB, Seedorf, Modric....Scholes is the one who impressed me the most. Even more than Zidane & I've always put Zidane in the top 5 players I've ever seen.
Scholes played pro for like 20 years!. He played in a great time against some of the best players ever. A few of those players are still playing to this day.
Paul Scholes, for me *the* greatest footballer in the world, in his generation. His vision and intelligence somehow transcended mere 'metrics'. He was one of (if not the) most influential midfielders in the English Premier League, he opened up teams not with parlour tricks, like step-overs, but with intelligence and an unbelievable range of passing. Paul was Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo, Zidane, Beckham all rolled into a single man. He's CRIMINALLY underrated IMO, I had some fella suggesting Scholes was 'propped up' due to superior foreign footballers but people who understand the game can see Paul was the one doing the propping. He was 'The Brain' of Manchester United.
I think people these days honestly find it hard to grasp that a short little ginger english guy from Manchester was THIS good. This is why you get some people who never seen him play not understanding How good he was. If he was Spanish and was called enrique he would be seen as one of the GOATS
I really forgot how good Paul scholes was, has technical ability to ping those long passes with laser accuracy with either the inside or outside of his feet are remarkable. He could also tackle and score goals from way outside the box. He was the complete midfielder and should have received more fame than the one trick pony Beckham. But Paul did not want the fame and Beckham did. Paul was recognised by the players of the highest level that he was the most complete midfielder of his time.
The players player. No fuss , no ego , just a down to earth guy with a god given talent to play football. Should of at least won a ballon d'or. One of the best midfielders this country has ever had , truly world class.
He was a genius on the football pitch, always a second ahead of everybody in his head. I consider it a privilege that I got a chance to experience paul scholes while I was growing up as a kid.
One of the best long passers of the ball the game has seen. Made midfield work easy with one touch passes to move the opposition about and when he hit a 30yd shot it wasn't dipping as it hit the net. Add to all of that he never wanted to the spotlight, the fame etc. Just wanted to play.
@StayBasedJesus You don't understand football. He's easily the best midfielder to play in the Premier league and one of the greatest players to play the game anywhere.
Sir Bobby Charlton: "I have no hesitation in putting a name to the embodiment of all that I think is best about football. It's Paul Scholes. Many great players have worn the shirt of Manchester United. Players I worshipped, then lost with my youth in Munich. Players like Denis Law and George Best who I enjoyed so much as team-mates and now, finally, players I have watched closely in the Alex Ferguson era. And in so many ways Scholes is my favourite. I love his nous and conviction that he will find a way to win, to make the killer pass or produce the decisive volley. When a game reaches a vital phase, these qualities seem to come out of his every pore. He's always on the ball, always turning on goal. He's always looking to bring other people into the action and if he loses possession you think he must be ill.”
Only player that can open up a game in a matter of seconds with 1 or 2 touches and a pass and he was consistent every game I don't think I've ever seen a bad performance from him at all and his ability and accuracy when soothing was pretty much unstoppable will we ever see another like him again not to sure we will
I can see why many greats he played against said 'you cant get anywhere near him' his clever touches when he receives the ball to take it away from opposition players were genius . He created space and time for himself .
As a long time Arsenal supporter, Paul Scholes is one of few United players i actually liked both as a person and player. Keane was a idiot, Giggs cheated on his brother and Neville always been cocky and annoying for example. But Scholes is such a cool guy. A joy to watch and so humble as a person.
I was absolutely privileged to have seen nearly every game live that Paul played in His talent was just unbelievable Thank you Paul for all the memories Paul cockney red
A reporter asked Zidane “what’s it like being the best midfielder in the world?” Zidane replied “I don’t know you’d have to ask Paul Scholes” True story
These are the kind of midfielders you say "they just don't make them like that anymore" it was not fair watching him he made everything look so easy. An absolute legend of the Premier league. ❤
When legends like Andrea iniesta, Michael. Owen, gabriella batistuta, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, pirlo and Zidane all state Paul Scholes was the best they ever played against, that tells you all you need to know. Paul Scholes is one of the greatest players ever, and probably the greatest midfielder of all time. In fact, he IS the best midfielder of all time. Bar none.
LFC fan here, bollocks to the nonces who say he had no pace. Sure, top end isn't great, but just look at his acceleration and anticipation. Excellent player, just watch him and how much space he creates for his team. Moreover, his skill on the ball, wonderful. Gerrard, was bigger and faster, a classic box to box midfielder, with a decent touch, great in the air and a thunderous shot. Scholes, was a more skillful, deceptive, almost subtle figure, when he wasn't chopping you in half mind.
Great analysis mate. What I always found so special about Scholes, is that he always made the correct decision. Whether it was a pass to a teammate, or a thunderous strike at goal, his decision making set him apart. He never chased the headlines, and even today, he is an unassuming gentleman. Gerrard was a monster, but his arrogance sometimes made him hard to like. Paul remains humble, while Gerrard remains unlikable.
One of the worlds best ever. My absolute favorite. I understand he quit the english team they preferrede Lampard and Gerrard but here you have someone much better.
If Paul Scholes was a player today, he'd get far more appreciation and praise than he ever did when he was actually playing. He plays so much like a modern player that you could almost say he was born in the wrong era.
"Paul Scholes couldn't tackle" - he could tackle pretty well, he could also take people out when he needed to. Not to mention the range of passing and the finishing, a gifted player.
I came to say the exact same thing. People just think about him taking people out and decide he can't tackle - such a bad assessment. He was asked about bad tackles once and I remember he said "I was getting people back that kicked me" 🤣
@@wharsmetoothpicson9465 never accept one side of the coin. Ill show u a video of 100 terrible tackles he made. he admits it, he was a liability and got sent off for it.
He could change the game with just one long 40-50 yard pass. I remember a game against West Ham, when with just one pass to Beckham, he eased the pressure on Man Utd and Man Utd moved from defense to attack with Becham scoring at the other end.
Hoddles fk up as Eng coach and Keegans subsequent appointment destroyed Scholes as an international player. KK tried to build a team around him, but failed and quit. Sven Eriksson went for Gerrard and Lampard. It was a disastrous decision. Gerrard and Scholes would have been a masterclass.
In the beginning of 2011 season pirlo was so close to join fcb but surely if i want just onr player to completet the duo of xaviesta of course i would pick paul scholes it will be a pleasure to see him in those barce patterns and combination play his is technique is beyond. You could say that the pass of pirlo is smooth and alonso is powerful xavi is percise iniesta is amazing but all of these qualities combined on his scholes passing.

He's CRIMINALLY underrated IMO, I had some fella suggesting Scholes was 'propped up' due to superior foreign footballers but people who understand the game can see Paul was the one doing the propping. He was 'The Brain' of Manchester United.
He could do it all.
I think people these days honestly find it hard to grasp that a short little ginger english guy from Manchester was THIS good. This is why you get some people who never seen him play not understanding
How good he was.
The guy who made me love football. Power Scholes
Scholes my hero !! Legend of the game… most underrated player ! I’d have him over any player today
The players player. No fuss , no ego , just a down to earth guy with a god given talent to play football. Should of at least won a ballon d'or. One of the best midfielders this country has ever had , truly world class.
Scholsey, my glorious king
No flamboyance…just pure footballing genius. What a brilliant brilliant player❤
Really underrated player !
Still the best football player in history for me
Pardon?? History?
He was a genius on the football pitch, always a second ahead of everybody in his head.
I consider it a privilege that I got a chance to experience paul scholes while I was growing up as a kid.
Glad to see some tackles and other obscure moments in here, well done!
One of the best long passers of the ball the game has seen. Made midfield work easy with one touch passes to move the opposition about and when he hit a 30yd shot it wasn't dipping as it hit the net. Add to all of that he never wanted to the spotlight, the fame etc. Just wanted to play.
BEST. CM. EVER. period.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Not even top 5
@StayBasedJesus You don't understand football. He's easily the best midfielder to play in the Premier league and one of the greatest players to play the game anywhere.
scholes played such beautiful football that even opponents and fans don't even go in on him for his reckless challenges.
The greatest ever 🐐
Only player that can open up a game in a matter of seconds with 1 or 2 touches and a pass and he was consistent every game I don't think I've ever seen a bad performance from him at all and his ability and accuracy when soothing was pretty much unstoppable will we ever see another like him again not to sure we will
Never ever😢
One of the most underrated midfielder in years, genius
Give your head a shake.
amazing player! amazing video! thank you!
I can see why many greats he played against said 'you cant get anywhere near him' his clever touches when he receives the ball to take it away from opposition players were genius . He created space and time for himself .
Who remember when SAF called scholes out of the retirement
Not true.
Very true
His last season
@@peter4363 January 2012 he came back from retirement i recall very well the game against city fa cup , my Dad was so happy to see him again
Yeh it had nothing to do with Sir Alex Ferguson though thats the false part of the statement.@@salimlutfimohamed832
As a long time Arsenal supporter, Paul Scholes is one of few United players i actually liked both as a person and player. Keane was a idiot, Giggs cheated on his brother and Neville always been cocky and annoying for example. But Scholes is such a cool guy. A joy to watch and so humble as a person.
do 10% of that and you are a 100m player in todays market
Basically joao neves
Better than Gerrard and Lampard
someone would be so stupid if he said lampard and gerrard better than scholes😂
I agree. Scoles has a little better ball control then Gerrard.
I was absolutely privileged to have seen nearly every game live that Paul played in
His talent was just unbelievable
Thank you Paul for all the memories
Paul cockney red
A reporter asked Zidane “what’s it like being the best midfielder in the world?”
Zidane replied “I don’t know you’d have to ask Paul Scholes”
True story
The bloke was class, don’t compare to others as he was different, ginger genius
There will never be another player like paul scholes. So….. Complete
Modric,kroos?
@@adenihunadewale9214 modric is scholes with better ball carrying
@@shesbaldbutiwouldscholes is way better then modric mate you obviously never seen scholes play every week
@@AbuBakr-Siddiq you obviously didnt see modric if youre saying that
@@shesbaldbutiwould I've seen modric when he was a young man at Tottenham. Cracking player but not as good as Paul Scholes
We won’t unfortunately see his like again for a loooooooong time.
His thinking speed s extremely fast 👍
one of the best english footballer ever
Sadly, they don't make these type of players anymore!!!
He plays so much like a modern player that you could almost say he was born in the wrong era.
yh well if he was a player today Barcelona would have signed him for sure.
Scholes was something else.. hail the master !!
He was asked about bad tackles once and I remember he said "I was getting people back that kicked me" 🤣
no, he couldnt tackle. Dont rewrite history.
@@meisterlymanu5214 I take it you didn't watch the video, or chose not to see the successful tackles in it.
@@wharsmetoothpicson9465 never accept one side of the coin. Ill show u a video of 100 terrible tackles he made. he admits it, he was a liability and got sent off for it.
The great Scholesy.
The G.O.A.T
And kids will say that KDB is better than this man. Absolute bollocks.
I almost shed tears😢 we are never going to have another player like that at Man Utd ever again
He could change the game with just one long 40-50 yard pass. I remember a game against West Ham, when with just one pass to Beckham, he eased the pressure on Man Utd and Man Utd moved from defense to attack with Becham scoring at the other end.
1000 % UNDER-Rated.
He's classes as one of the best midfielders ever to play the game that's hardly been under rated 😂
Paul Scholes was such a FUCKING PRIVILEGE to watch...the guy was a machine! 😁👌🔥
Best English midfielder of the last 30 years. No question, no doubt. Nobody else comes close. The comparisons with Lampard & Gerrard are farcical.
The one and only. No one could compare. What a player he was. the legendary Scholesy
There’s a reason United stopped winning trophies after he retired
the most underrated legend, paul scholes 🔥
For me Scholes is the best cm of all time. Xavi, Iniesta right behind.
Modric, Kroos, And Casemiro won 5 champions leagues so they have to be up there.
Xavi Iniesta way ahead of Scholes
Xavi is on record saying Scholes is the best midfielder he's seen 🤔
None of those are better then prime Scholes. Trophies doesn't mean they become the best in that position.@@coreykernan9582
The last shot was insane
In the beginning of 2011 season pirlo was so close to join fcb but surely if i want just onr player to completet the duo of xaviesta of course i would pick paul scholes it will be a pleasure to see him in those barce patterns and combination play his is technique is beyond. You could say that the pass of pirlo is smooth and alonso is powerful xavi is percise iniesta is amazing but all of these qualities combined on his scholes passing.
No he isn't all those players combined your deluded
I see why Man U had many fans. The football was beautiful
xavi needs iniesta and busquets to become effective
but scholes..just need himself..
what happened with england then
Xavi broke into the Barcelona first team in 1998 long before Iniesta.
The greatest footballers make difficult things look simple. Scholes is definitely one of those players.
