    Of all the awesome FreeCAD tutorials you have done, this one was the one that most helped me make the jump away from Fusion360. Man... I needed this so much. Thank you!

    The green subshapebinder is the successor of shapebinder and much better. Its on freecad dialy.

    why can't the devs just make the "link external geometry" button allow selecting the geometry?! Oh no, you need to use a DIFFERENT button instead. ugh. I've been fighting for days to get linked sketch constraints into different bodies. Tried all the button, "Carbon copy", oh it doesn't update with edits. "Linked geometry" oh it works until you put it in another body to get generate a tool path. But has topo naming bug. Now "ShapeBinder", here we go again... weeee! They should stop adding features and fix the UI.
    Thanks for the video! it... gives... me... hope...

    Another great video, thank you. I wonder if you could make a video on datum planes, and how their use helps overcome the topological naming problem in FreeCAD. Coming from something like Fusion 360 the recommendation to not sketch on faces, but instead use datum planes is confusing.

    • @carlosmanuel5992
      @carlosmanuel5992 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Download and isntall "FreeCAD Assembly3" by realthunder. It is the full FreeCAD (with the Assembly 3 workbench). The advantage of this branch of FreeCAD is that the toplogical naming problem is solved so you can draw the sketches in the faces

  • @TheRainHarvester
    @TheRainHarvester 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fyi : 2:25 Be sure to click "add geometry" THEN click the face as the video says. It's not the usual "cntrl-click lots of geometry THEN click 'add geometry' ".
    You can only select one line per "add geometry" button click!
    Man that UI was confusing. Had to watch CADZis's video to understand.

    Great style! Thought I was listening to Clint Eastwood! A little quick for my aged responses, but as a hobby user, creating simple, single bodies for manufacture in our local community workshop, I may never need to use the shape binder tool?

    • @JokoEngineeringhelp
      @JokoEngineeringhelp  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. True, you probably don't need shape binder for that.

  • @hc3d

    I noticed my multibody part was only showing one of the 2 bodies when adding the part into an A2+ assembly. After creating a second body and adding a shape binder to the correct feature, both bodies showed up in the assembly. Unlike SW, this way multibody modeling is more explicit, which may be a good thing.

    Having a hard time making this work. When I click on create edge link to external geometry, nothing happens even after I have done the shape binder.

  • @lovizio93
    @lovizio93 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Excellent and usefull, would be nice if you could cover the multy body technique in more depth, like How to extrude a sketch from body "A" up to a face of a body "B"
    I've tried using shape binder for that but with no luck.

    • @JokoEngineeringhelp
      @JokoEngineeringhelp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're doing that within the part design workbench, correct?

    • @lovizio93
      @lovizio93 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JokoEngineeringhelp Right, ussualy the error it shows after selecting the sketch A and set the operation type to "Up to face" says: "Resulting shape is empty" but I'm able to extrude the sketch in the other configurations normally

    • @JokoEngineeringhelp
      @JokoEngineeringhelp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lovizio93 I created a quick and dirty multibody part and defined a datum plane on the planar face I was extruding to and extruded to the plane instead of the face and it worked. I can send you the part if you email me at the address in the description

    Thanks for the great tutorial! I have found that the shape binder doesn't honor transforms. That is, if you use transform to move a body in the 3d workspace, shape binder will still treat it exactly as if it had never been transformed and show it at the original location. Does anybody know of a workaround for this? Usage case example is that I created several gears for a gearbox, then used transform to move them to the desired locations for proper meshing. Now I would like to create the side of the gear box and need to locate the proper location for the gear axles but shape binder doesn't map them to the proper locations, just to the origin (where the gear workbench created them).

    • @RogersFollies
      @RogersFollies 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I figured it out. I should be using the green shapebinder, which will do multiple bodies and honor the transforms also.

  • @AndrewHelgeCox
    @AndrewHelgeCox 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Won’t this suffer from the same the topological naming problem as when importing geometry from the same body?

  • @peterp4319
    @peterp4319 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    can the shape binder be unintentionally moved by freecad's topological naming problem ? ( because it was generated from a face ?) ???

    i must be doing something wrong, i have a sketch within my active body, and have a separate body that i'm trying to reference but am unable to add edges, faces, or vertexes from the external body. FWIW, i'm trying to reference "shapes" "offset" from the sketch i have created, so not sure if that's my issue. please excuse my poor choice of words. below is a link to a visual explanation
