    I've had a Baratza Sette 270 WI for several years now (pre-covid) based on your review. I love it apart from the noise where it's press the button and run unless I'm wearing ear protection. It is quieter when the hopper is full. Apart from the noise, the grind is just brilliant ... always fluffy and zero clumping.😄

      To their credit there is a wink wink reference to most of those in the Oro review. And the Ode fellow does not qualify as an espresso grinder.
      Also to be fair (and I don’t know why) Ceados are amazing yet there are very few reviews of them out there. The E5/E6 are easily the best value imo in their range… beats niche and df64 to me (in my limited tasting out of all of them)… wish other lists considered the Ceados more, they are missing everywhere else.

    The Eureka Mignon is a fantastic bang for your buck to be honest. I had the pleasure to play with it for a couple weeks and it did everything I wanted. Grinding is slow, but you know what you're getting every single time.

    Can confirm. Ceado grinders are destination grinders. Our E37S is our high speed 20 gram espresso shooter in 5.3 seconds. It's used all day in our house for the milk drinks like americano's and lattes. It's paired with a Ceado E5P that I use for single dosing (some 3D printing was involved) Both grinders are all that our family will ever need for espresso. We also have the poorer cousin to the Mignon shown, our Eureka Mignon Filtro which is dialed in for our Technivorm for the early morning brew. I spent a lot of time researching these grinders and I can't recommend them and Whole Latte Love enough. Cheers guys.

      @@Wholelattelovepage Absolutely Marc! Please use my line. I meant every word; the test of a good home production workflow is if your significant other is onboard and can easily pull an espresso without asking you to do it for her. I keep an eye on the E37S to make sure the grind and the timing is shooting 20G and it's really consistent. Couple that with a volumetric espresso machine (ours is the La Spaziale Lucca A53) and she can bang out a great 8oz latte in under a minute. A lot of people misunderstand how to use a great grinder like the E37S and try to use it for workflows it's not designed to do. For example, you can't single dose it without serious mods and since it's got that great warranty, I'm not screwing with it. Thanks for all your hard work and information you give to the community. I watch everything you guys produce.
      I'd love to send you an image of our coffee bar. I think you would find it really interesting.

    • @Wholelattelovepage

      Hi JP, Thanks for the kind comment. Your machine uses a pressurized filter basket so super precise control of grind size is not as critical as it is for more advanced machine which use standard non-pressurized filter baskets. Since making this video, Baratza released the Encore ESP: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/espresso-grinders/products/baratza-encore-esp-coffee-and-espresso-grinder-white
      The Encore ESP has a unique design which gives very good control of grind size in the espresso fine range ata very reasonable price compared to higher-end espresso focused grinders.

  • @PanzerIV88
    @PanzerIV88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Interesting Top 5! I've been lucky enough to have tried I could say 3 of these 5 grinders over the last years. I started with a "Sette 270Wi" which was good for the price few years ago considering there was no official Single Dose grinder yet. It really took companies a lot of time to get into that market! Today I wouldn't really recommend it anymore though. You just NEVER ever get used to that terribly loud and agressive noise from Hell even after 2-3 years lol.
    The motor also died after the warranty but Breville gladly sent me a new one for free which wasn't hard to install myself. The build quality definitely doesn't feel European and you can tell. I much prefer the smaller, more silent and portable but slower "Option-O Lagom Mini" at the 400$ range and it has bigger and better conical burrs, it's night and day difference!
    Then I replaced that Sette from my mom for the "Eureka Oro" during the pre-orders but was lucky enough not to get the first bad batches as it works flawlessly. It was by far the best grinder at its price range of 800$ so still double from the Option-O. It's super silent, fast and most surprising... It has ZERO retention without even using RDT or a brush in the grind chute!
    On my "Ceado E37SD" I must always always use RDT or else it's gonna be a real mess everywhere with A LOT of grind retention like you really don't want to forget that step, and then you still need to use the brush even if you press the bellow like a mad man. If only Ceado would have better designed it with angle but to figure they actually do but want 2-3x the price of that already super expensive grinder just to get the angle.
    I also very dislike the plastic plate for grinds doesn't fit flush with the grinder. Who the heck designed something with a 4mm gap on propose so the grinds keep accumulating there rather than all on the plate... You can notice this big flaw within 1 week of use at most! Otherwise it is very reliable after about 1.5 years at ~1Kg per month as I can grind my morning coffee at 1.70 then my décaf on evenings at 1.0 back and forth with no issue and the calibration remains in place when switching between my 2 type of coffees which is the entire point of this.
    Question MARC, have you ever compared the stock E37SD Burrs with the SPP burrs? It seems better but the grinder was already very expensive, and I doubt the stock one would be low quality at such price that I would have felt bad to toss away brand new burrs, and also scared to waste 400$ to change 1$ for 4x0.25$ if you see what I mean, plus the risk of ot installing correctly the new set and have a bad zero point or calibration while I know the stock one from Ceado should be tested at the manufacturer.
    PS: A little error you said in the video as I happen to be an audiophile as well as an espresso lover 😉 It's about the noise level perceived. It's at every +10dB that you can hear it twice as loud, NOT +3dB! You just mismatched the info that +3dB requires a doubling of the wattage power to achieve that. So a difference of say +20dB between the Sette 270 I had and my E37SD would mean FOUR time louder x_x
    "A change of 10 dB is accepted as the difference in level that is perceived by most listeners as “twice as loud” or “half as loud”. Directly from JL-Audio FAQ.

    • @jordanmulert
      @jordanmulert ปีที่แล้ว

      Hate to be that guy, but you and WLL are both incorrect. Sound pressure level is useless for PERCEPTION of loudness. SPL is used to determine if sound is damaging to our hearing, but NOT how we perceive loudness. To approximate how sound is perceived each frequency must be evaluated against a standardized equal loudness curve such as Fletcher-Munson. In that case your units would end up being dB Phons or the linear Sones.

      @Wholelattelovepage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi P, Thanks for the feedback. There is a lot of plastic in the Sette and it sits in the high-end appliance grade for build quality. Machine grade products made of metal do cost more for similar features but do have a much longer working lifespan. Not sure if it was the case with your Sette, but they can run into issues when used beyond their rating. Sette has a 10% duty cycle meaning run for 10 seconds rest for 90 seconds. Run for 30 seconds rest for 4.5 minutes etc.

      Hi LTLR, Thanks for the comment and questions. It's difficult to adjust the E37S from espresso to pour over as it does not have the release like the SD version. It's about 75 turns of the grind size adjustment to go between those brew methods. The E37S cannot be equipped with the quick adjustment. Hi Marc, great and helpful video. I'm looking to upgrade my grinder, currently using breville smart grinder pro. Pairing with my profitec pro 500, my espresso taste honestly I feel quite lacking. Among candidates available in Malaysia is sette 270, eureka mignon XL, and also niche zero if I can get a stock. Any experience or recommendation on listed or other models? I'm using for home, typically 3-4 cups per day

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi MIBMH, Thanks for the comment and question. My preference top to bottom is the Eureka Mignon XL then the Sette 270 and personally I'd stay away from the Niche. Mignon has far and away the best build quality. It's a true machine grade product that'll serve for decade+. Also has nice big flat burrs which are preferred for espresso. The Sette is doable but rather loud. It grinds quick and fluffy and can be staticky in low humidity environments. It can easily handle your 3-4 cups a day but does have a felt friction ring between the macro and micro adjustment rings that will eventually need replacement - but it's only a couple of dollars. Also comes with burr shims which need to be installed after a few Kg's of grinding to restore fine grinding range.
      Hope that helps!

    Firstly I ask my question. In the Eureka line which grinder is best for oily beans? Larger burrs with fast output or the opposite? Bigger chute?
    When you said, " I have never had a problem grinding small, hard, light roast beans." Well, guess who likes the enemy of all grinders dark oily beans. Something often lost in the minutiae of espresso making is that it's all about the taste, not timing, crema height or density. People may rail against this type of dark roast but I like it in a french press or out of an espresso machine. Your opinion would be appreciated.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi LC, I never judge people for what they like. I brought up the light roast because they tend to be harder than dark roasts so can be more challenging for underpowered grinders. A bigger chute and wide direct path out of a grinder means less restriction and fewer spots for oils to build up. The majority of Eureka grinders have similar geometry/design of path out after the grinding chamber. Larger burrs result in faster grinding and more force/velocity to push out ground coffee. The real problem comes when oils accumulate, combine with powdery grinds and narrow or obstruct the path out. The solution is to clean the grinder as needed. When regular cleaning is needed life is easier with a grinder that's easy to open up and does not loose grind size setting when doing so. All the grinders in Eureka's Mignon line have those characteristic's with access to grinding chamber by removing 4 easy to access screws and no loss of grind setting when doing so. Hope that helps!

      It's a well built, no frills, flat burr, machine grade grinder with the precision needed for espresso. The Baratza Sette is an option as well. Hi r, I'd go with the Eureka. Any of those grinders will work. I've used all 3 and like the Selenzio the best. Nicer build quality than the others - it's a much more solid unit than the Vario. I'm just not a fan of the DF64 I've used. The way the top burr rides on 3 springs reminds me of some Mazzer grinders I used to use. Drove me nuts cleaning those things! Beyond that it uses some aluminum components in areas I don't like. Also prefer made in Italy - only the Eureka is.

    Hi Mark. Do you have any thoughts on "grind by weight" grinders? I'm interested in the Eureka Mignon Libra. I don't see it on your store, are you looking at getting it at some point? Hey Es, We currently have a Libra in-house for evaluation and testing. If it does well and early indications are it will then it should be on our site soon. I have used the grind by weight Baratza 270 Wi extensively since it was released about 5 years ago. After a slightly shaky start, software and construction updates a few years back turned it into an amazingly accurate weight based grinder. The 270 Wi is more in the appliance grade of products while the Libra has a more robust machine grade build quality.

If yes to both of those them single dose might be the right choice for you. I would not leave beans in a hopper for more than a day or so. Not much difference over 1 day in hopper vs. vacuum canister. It's long term storage where a canister shows benefit. For me, I leave beans sealed tight in original bag after expelling as much air from the bag as possible.
      Hope that helps!

    I have a friend looking at getting an espresso machine and the ECM synchronika with a Firoengato F64E is quite reasonably priced where we live, though it's infact only a little more to instead get the F83E Pro grinder.

      Hi ER, Hmmm... I do not recall recommending that grinder. Typically I only recommend products I've personally used and I don't recall ever using that one. Perhaps I looked it up and saw it was a 64mm flat burr grinder and has a decent reputation so endorsed it for that reason. I assume the F83 uses an 83mm flat burr set. Bigger burrs grind faster with more uniform particle size in the grind - that's a good thing.

      Hey TT, E37S is a fabulous grinder! I've used the others as well which all had their day. But looking back in comparison: Rocky slow, clumpy and hindered by stepped adjustment. Mazzer a PITA to clean and exposed threads get gummed up making adjustment stiff and jumpy.

    Great video - I wish my technique was up there with yours.
    I love my Niche - quiet, consistent, reliable single dosing and keeps its setting. Easy to clean and not much build up of coffee in the machine.
    If I wanted a hopper grinder that Caedo E5Pro would be something I would seriously consider.
    The Sette is made and serviced near me but was a non starter for noise and reliability issues.
    BTW, on static issues:
    I hate mess and static from a grinder can greatly aggravate this as well as contributing to coffee retention in the grinder.
    My current workflow is to grind into a cup and then transfer to the portafilter with a funnel on top after letting the coffee sit in the cup for a few seconds to dissipate static, followed by a quick WDT to get a flat even bed of coffee before tamping.
    I have no need to spritz with water, which I am reluctant to do anyway for corrosion issues.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Concerns for me with Niche is the conical burr and the full coffee brewing grind size adjustment range is ~180 degrees from espresso fine to immersion coarse. I'm used to a much higher level of size control in the espresso range.
      Static can be an issue and messy when it happens. Low humidity conditions tend to make it worse. I usually do not worry about RDT spray. When needed, it's usually because air and/or beans are dry. Grinding process removes any moisture from burrs etc so corrosion not a problem.

    I want to upgrade from my “starter” setup (Breville Café Roma model ESP8XL and Capresso Infinity grinder) and I’m leaning towards the Gaggia Classic Pro. I really wanted an HX or at least one of the higher end single boiler machines, but baby steps… I single dose because after the first of the day it’s decaf for me. I was thinking of the Eureka Mignon Zero (not the Oro) or the Baratza Sette 270. I typically make one or two milk drinks and then switch to drip, moka pot or French press. Although with a better espresso machine that could become Americanos. I’m just wondering if either of the mentioned grinders would be better for my planned use or if something else would be better. I suppose I could hold on to the Capresso for the French press…

    • @Wholelattelovepage

      Hi Barbara, Gaggia Classic Pro is an excellent choice for a next step and the Mignon Zero a good pairing. I would hang onto the Infinity for brew methods other than espresso. If you want to kick your espresso quality up a notch, precise control of grind size is key. Difficult to do that if you're dramatically altering grind size for brew methods other than espresso. Espresso focused grinders tend to produce more fines at coarser grind sizes. Hope that helps!

It's possible - though I think unlikely your grinder had some base issue. Glad to hear your local supplier was great.

      @@Wholelattelovepage Hi Marc. Yes, obviously thought I could be the problem. I purchased a niche after 4 months and could pull much better shots immediately. Then after getting my money back got a df64p. Amazing. Shot quality like you see on TH-cam. No wandering zero. Just how a grinder should be. Ceados response was much like yours. Machine was in no way faulty.

      I did the same. After watching these videos I chose the e37J and have been struggling with it for about a month now. I ground through three pounds of coffee to season the burrs, and now about four more pounds in at this point. Seeing zero consistency in grind, grinds spilling everywhere, clumps, lots of retention, and the most frustrating thing is the lack of being able to make anything close to a fine adjustment in grind selection with the lever… it jumps when trying to move it (with the grinder running, and wasting coffee beans in the process); it does not move at all without great effort. I would have considered the S model, but it was close to a 50% premium to the cost for the worm gear adjustment. A grinder at that price point should not be that difficult to adjust.

      @@AA-SFO yep. My brother bought the e37j first and couldnt even remotely dial it in. After about a similar amount of coffee to you he returned it to WLL and upgraded to the e37s. I'd suggest contacting whoever you got it off.

      @@AA-SFO I started off with a Sette 270 and it really did like the grinds it produced. It was pretty messy (it's dry here in Colorado) but that was mostly fixed with some RDT. However, the noise from it was horrific. There are lots of stories about Settes breaking, but also how Baratza has great customer support. There's very minimal retention from the Sette, and the 270 model gives lots of adjustability -- you really can't expect the level of control needed for espresso from the 30. But the noise...!! I still have it stashed away in case of emergency.
      So I bought a Ceado E37J. I must have gotten a bad unit because after grinding through fully 8 lbs of coffee to season it and dial it in, it would still not make espresso even with the burrs just back from touching; it would not grind fine enough. I can't explain it, and nor could WLL. And that adjustment lever?? It was terrible. Next to impossible to make a fine adjustment. Also, the retention was quite high because the burrs are a lot smaller than the grind chamber was designed for.
      So back it went to WLL and I upgraded to an E37S, the one I wanted all along anyway. I was drawn to the Ceados because I was hoping to hopper-feed my beans, but it turns out that with only about 5 shots a day there was still enough retention that the first shot of the day was dried out and would run very fast. The idea of having to dump 1/5 of my shots wasn't appealing so I went back to single-dosing. The S does this well enough, although you must use a bellows for it to work. And you've really got to mix the grinds very thoroughly in the dosing cup as the first vs last grinds run quite differently -- it's easy to get a weak spot in the portafilter if you don't distribute them very well.
      It's just...the shot consistency is flakey. I think I have decent technique, but I can see back to back shots be 35g and then 55g for the same 35s (with 20g in). And the pucks look beautiful. Why?
      The Ceados feel very well built - like the mechanism will be something I can give to my kid one day, but I look at the touch-panel and wonder how that's going to hold up.
      But at the end of the day I could have bought a DF64 for literally 1/3 the cost of the Ceado and probably have the same or better results (as has been reported by others).
      (Edit: I had the E37J & S back to front; corrected that.)

      Hey C, We've been in espresso for 25 years and work with manufacturers to bring improvements to products based on customer feedback. The Mignon Facile fills a need for a high quality no frills, machine grade grinder with larger flat burrs and quiet operation. The Ceado E5Pro adds the side pulse switch to the PF activated switch so dosing into bottomless PFs or other containers is easier than on the original E5P.

      Hi uu, How do suggest I quantify taste? Taste is very subjective and many other variables involved. I can say this... In general: flat burrs are preferred for espresso grinding, larger burrs produce a more consistent grind particle size resulting in more clarity in flavor. Hope that helps!

      Hi MG, Well, if I'm going to the trouble of single dosing for espresso I'm doing it with a flat burr grinder so no Niche for me. Also just can't get over the full-range of grind sizes from espresso fine to coarse for immersion contained in a 180 degree turn of adjustment. Really tough to be precise with espresso grind size.
