  • Pittsburgh, Steel City, the city of bridges, but it really should be called the city that puts fries on a lot of stuff. From the famous Primanti Bros sandwiches to a Pittsburgh Salad you will see fries in many interesting places in Pittsburgh. There are a number of wonderful treats from milkshakes to smiley cookies to crepe pancakes at Pamela's. Here are some of our favorite eats of Pittsburgh.

I just want to pre-apologize for how I pronunce Primanti Bros. I just could not pronounce it right, so I just went with the way it came out. I just kept messing up when I said it the right way. My apologies Pittsburghers! We still loved Pittsburgh (if you can't tell).

The reason why theres a little story about that with the french fries on the sandwiches, especially at the Primanti Brothers, there’s a little story When the truck drivers used to deliver especially down in the strip district, they always needed to eat and run. They never had time to sit down for meal. So what they did when they made the sandwiches they put everything all on the sandwich so you don’t have to be like taking a bite here go grab a french fry cause you don’t have time for that when you’re driving.

Check out Apteka for pierogies and other great Eastern European inspired dishes.
And there are so many local breweries here now that are so much better than iron city. You can also get lots of good food at some of the local farmers markets.
Also check out Vegfest at the Allegheny commons park if you’re visiting in late august. That’s all.

Grew up in Western PA with great Italian and Eastern European food. Most of my favorites are homemade especially the baked goods like nut, poppyseed, apricot rolls. Cookies at all events as well as the pretzel salad and Pittsburgh potato casserole. Also you missed hot sausage sandwiches and wow....Mancini Italian bread and rolls. The milkshake place is new..not old pgh. There are more local fish fries during Lent and more restaurants now than when I grew up. Lots of ethnic influence in food here. Each immigration and migration leaving its mark.

Pittsburgh native here-great overview, Mark! Some other recommendations for anyone visiting:
Italian food - Girasole in Shadyside, Pino’s in Point Breeze, Penn Mac (grocery store with the most amazing selection of cheeses you’ll ever see) in the Strip
Pizza - Fiori’s in Brookline, Mineo’s in Squirrel Hill, Colangelo’s in the Strip (best served for breakfast with a cannoli and a cappuccino from next door to wash it down)
Coffee - La Prima in the Strip, Commonplace Coffee in Squirrel Hill, Red Hawk in Oakland, Colombino in the Strip, Zeke’s in East Liberty
Breakfast - Kelly O’s (best French toast ever)
Mexican food - Patron in East Liberty, Mad Mex in Oakland/East Liberty
Thai food - Nicky’s Thai Kitchen in North Side, Took Took 98 in Squirrel Hill
Tea - Dobra Tea in Squirrel Hill, Fuku Tea in Oakland
