I've always been amazed to see how many health care workers in uniform go into a Sheetz or 7 Eleven and buy multiple packs of cigarettes. It's hard to break old habits that were handed down from generation to generation. But West Virginia is far worse.

In some other states, school taxes are not tied to property values. They're funded through other means. Seeing a school tax on a mortgage can be a shock for new residents.

As an African American from Connecticut living in Pittsburgh, it's a beautiful city. Here's what you need to know if you're a black working professional: Pennsylvania is ranked 37th in education. They tax heavily, but it doesn't reflect in their education system; it can be racist. Poor education is usually the fuel that causes this, on top of Pittsburgh bordering West Virginia and Ohio. The poverty and poor education spill over into the city. The only time African Americans are celebrated in Pittsburgh is when they're holding a football. The people "with money" in Pittsburgh have inflated egos because most have never lived anywhere else. The median income in Pittsburgh is $29k a year, so making 100k may make you feel more successful than you actually are.

@@Pghyinzer Born and raised in Pittsburgh, I have lived here for 63 years. I know it is taboo to put down the 'Steel City,' but I'm too old to sugarcoat. Not only is it one of the most racist cities in PA, but our infrastructure is downright embarrassing. I imagine the rising crime will bring on white flight from the urban and suburban areas, to the surrounding rural counties. So for me, a city still trying to hold on to its long lost heyday as the city of yinzers, is not one I would try to sell to young people looking to settle down here.

I sorta came from NY for similar reasons but will leave as soon as I can sell the house I bought next door to a heroin dealer. Be very very careful where you buy or rent, there are projects everywhere and the gang activity spills over into even the nicer neighborhoods. Also keep in mind this isn't so much a city as a bunch of separate suburbs. No cool bars or clubs. People here never travel and they go to bed at 9PM.

When I lived in Pittsburgh, I didn't like the feeling that everything was aging - and not in a quaint way - it felt somewhat dreary. The number one thing I REALLY disliked was all the one-ways. It seemed that I rarely could come home the way that I went - anywhere :-) and roads were poorly marked.

Pittsburgh flooding; buy a house on top.of a hill where there is no flooding.
During heavy rains drive on routes on the top of the hills.
Bridges are located over the 3 rivers. In the suburbs, there are few large bridges.
Weather, although wr have many cloudy days, the sun will shine in cloud breaks.
PITTSBURGH RARELY GETS TORNADOES. About once every 20 years, we get a TORNADO, but it is rare, and the rare tornado bounces off the hill tops.
The transfer tax in the City of Pittsburgh is offset by lower home prices in the City.
If you are from New York City, we do not have the rat problem.
So your Rat Terriors will not have the rat hunting like New York.
Pooping in the streets is not tolerated in Pittsburgh, like in New York. Pittsburgh does jail shop lifers.
So if you are a New Yorker then Chicago would be better.

#7...very very interesting.. a lot of people don't realize Pittsburgh is a ticking time boom, its very probable in next 10 years, whith the emergence of super soak rain phenomenon happening in last 20 years, these new rain storms are unlike anything in recorded history, the atmospheric River storms are increasing in frequency 10 fold, the amount of rain in these storms is 10x worse than in past,
Make no mistake, in next 10-15 years maybe much sooner, Pittsburgh will likely be the next Katrina, the level of destruction that a 10 inches of rain over a day or 2 could do is unimaginable for most people, and its very likely to happen sooner rather than later.
The destruction a storm like this will cause will likely in many ways be worse than New Orleans in hurricane Katrina, most of downtown Pittsburgh will be destroyed, that is 100s billions in damage in downtown alone, the death toll could easily rival that of hurricane Katrina by far, land slides, Allegheny valley, Monongahela valley will be devastated beyond anything seen in the u.s. before, federal agencies did a study on what would happen if Pittsburgh got over 8 or 9 inches rain in less than 36 hours, and the results were terrifying say least, water could reach 8 or 9 stories in buildings downtown, all of downtown submerged causing devastation on a financial scale that will easily rival hurricane Katrina, deaths would easily be in the 1000s, so citizens of Pittsburgh, tell your representatives to make a emergency plan for this very likely scenario now because it can happen anytime, and the chances it doesn't happen in next 10 -15 years are much less than the chances it will happen, they want to scare us all with climate change TALK and scam us into electric vehicles before we're ready and the infrastructure is ready,
But they can't pit together a plan of action for evacuation and mitigation now before the damage is done and millions of lives are horribly change forever, because Allegheny county is top 10 biggest metropolitan areas in country, and a mega disaster waiting to happen!
