This is so strange. Last year, I wrote a paper about ISIS and its effects on the Middle East and the Muslim community, and a lot of my classmates and teacher were fascinated by my interest in the subject. Thing is, I'm a cut and dry white dude. But I'm also an army vet with a deployment under my belt, and that usually shuts up any woke critics. Still though, it is concerning that so many people are towing the line to religious orthodoxy in the west. I understand that many Muslims feel subjugated and are tired of being displayed as terrorists when there is so much more to their culture. Some of the architecture in the Middle East and south east Asia are some of the most beautiful in the world. Not to mention the rugs and carpets are so beautifully crafted that many western carpets are inspired by those types of designs. There is also the hospitality in Muslim culture that I think is one of its most admirable qualities. To a point where I think that many Americans could learn a thing or two from the generosity of the people in these parts of the world. But the problem I have with Muslims and woke lefties who think that westerners have no right to speak on the issue of Jihadism and groups like ISIS is that someone like me and my friends, who have been to these countries and have studied this issue, are often more entitled to discuss it than most people. Just because you are a practicing Muslim doesn't mean you know anything about ISIS or counter terrorism, for that takes a different plethora of experience that many people from any community simply don't have. For instance, I am not entitled to speak on the KKK more than Daryl Davis, because he's a genuine expert on the subject. I'm not claiming here to be an true expert on Jihadism, but I have been trained in counter terrorism, been deployed, I've read the books and the scholarship, watched the documentaries, and have read several articles about the subject. It's something I know quite a bit about. And I'm floored that people can just shut someone down because they are not the proper identity. This is a real problem for any culture to endure. I hope we break this toxic cycle soon, because shutting down documentaries is on another level of authoritarian social order.
I have experienced coincidences or synchronicities in my life so intense that the hair stood up on the back of my neck and it gave me the creep. So does this piece of work with Meg's story. That is why I find Jungian psychology intriguing. Life has mysteries, we don't know the science behind it. It is science's turn to connect the dots. I think the problem is not with religion, but realizing why psychology is important and how abuse happens if we ignore the need of healing from all kinds of traumas. In all levels in society. At least: not to elect "leaders" with personality disorders. Is it so surprising they will cause havoc when they denied to be pleased or feel entitled to dictate everything to others how to live, think, behave and who/what not to worship because it should be them?
@@tahwsisiht I get your point, but when we're talking about a mostly religious identity, the religion itself becomes part of the conversation. Though I think it's important to differentiate between the Muslim identity and Islamic ideology (salafism, for instance). There are certainly Muslims who identify as Muslim only in the cultral sense. So, they may not really believe in the Quran or the prophecies of Mohammed, but they partake in Islamic celebrations with their family and friends. There are also liberals who share very strong humanistic values, and interpret the Quran and Hadeeth as such, whilst being critical of the problematic verses of the text, though they will defend their identity as Muslims (and by default defend Islam) if they feel it is under intense scrutiny by outsiders. It's kind of like, "if you think horribly of my religion, then what do you think of my culture, or my family, or myself?". I would agree that Sam Harris' antitheist absolutism isn't very effective when combating religious fundamentalism, regardless of how true some of it can be. However, in this sense we are talking about a kind of ideology that stems from strict religious conviction. This kind of offensive/military Jihad that groups like ISIS strive towards can be diagnosed by deeply religious orientation. I understand the argument of it being motivated by political factors or things like money (which I personally think is even worse than someone who's actually ideologically committed in some sense), but very much of the apocalyptic philosophy of ISIS and its goal of installing and expanding a caliphate CAN be explained from the Salafi-Jihadi interpretation of Islam. I wouldn't say that Islam is soley responsible for for this brand of terrorism, because that's ignorant, but it is certainly a huge piece of when we're talking about the motivations of Jihadists, particularly the thought leaders of these organizations. In this sense, when talking about this issue, Islam will always play a vital role in the conversation. Jihadism is an ideology that is informed by Islamic doctrine, and implemented through political instability and warfare. It's a complex issue, no question, but this is why I mentioned religion within my original post.
@@someperson9999 I hear your opinion. Although I did write my thoughts in the comment section, I think I will refrain from this kind of communication. It will never be a good way of explaining someone's view especially when you disagree. The more you trying to convey your point, the more room opens up for misinterpreting the intent or the validity of a point. I realized something recently. What I tried to share in this "comment section debates" may would take 30+ minutes video to listen to. Especially with people you disagree with, it is an impossible assignment. When you see one very simple misrepresentation or lie, it maybe takes you a sentence or two, but talking about details and the importance of that detail is not the same. All I meant is, for me, and I understand if you think it is not that important, psychology plays an important role how one uses their religion. Sorry that it took time out from your day to answer to my comment and if my response seems shut down-ish. We still can agree that it is nice to live in a country where we can have our own opinion without retaliation. I hope it will be like that in the future too. I am happy that you have your opinion too and in this case, it does not bother me how we differ.

@sam - I’m a subscriber but I agree this is worth the extra exposure. Cultural appropriation and representation started as reasonable concerns but it’s been weaponized by unscrupulous people and there’s way too many cowards/useful idiots who so desperately want to be seen as allies, they’ll do or say anything… though I’m pretty sure they would not sacrifice their actual privileges for a POC or a working class white and actually combat structural issues. So much better to stick to performative grievances. You can have your privileges and eat moral superiority too…
@@endoalley680 are you being ironic? You don’t think that POC artists used to underrepresented or caricatured? You don’t think (white) artists “borrowed” from black American culture without as much as a shout-out (Elvis being the go to example there but hardly alone)
@@fredericmari8871 You don't think Black artists have used diatonic musical scales originating in ancient Greece without giving credit to Pythagoras? Black Jazz (and other genre) musicians didn't use the circle of fifths triads, and chord forms invented by early western classical composers without asking permission from those same Middle Age European composers? No. Nor should they. Jamaican and Afro beat artists can't use American invented electric guitars and electric keyboards? Can't use computer software for editing? That would be absurd. You’ve been a voice of reason in many different scenarios and a vital component of my ability to think critically. @@pathologicaldoubt the logic is that most politicians in almost every country are acting in such clear self interest and the interest of elites, while actively punishing and subjugating their voters, that it's becoming difficult to ignore the possibility that they're operating under ulterior motives. The great reset is the only theory that's been posited with a significant deal of evidence and correlation. It's hard to chalk self interest on such a wide scale to simple politics when it's so degrading to the founding principles of our democratic economies and flies in the face of what we were raised to believe is the equitable and reasoned world we have the right to believe in. Thank you for making this podcast in particular full format. I've been listening to 30m bits of this for the past week when i wake up, and it truly makes a difference in how I spend my day.
20 min into it, I understand why Sam released the full episode 😂
Meg and Sam, if there are 10 hours of content from an interview with a firefighter who was with Bin Laden on 9/11 - please, please bring that to light!
Thank you for this conversation, one of the most impactful I've listened to in recent months.
And thank you for putting your money where your mouth is, Sam. You're an inspiration!
Charging for that will raise her plenty of money! She should find a way to monetize it.
This was maybe the best Making Sense episode I have ever heard.. Meg is incredible.
I keep going back to listen again her anecdotes. What a wonderful human being this woman is! Thank you Sam.
Certainly top 5 Making Sense episode for me! Couldn't stop listening.
For almost a decade now Sam is my reliable go to voice amidst the online rabble. My first click”subscribe.” Always a student. Learn. Respect.
How do I support Meg and purchase a viewable version of this film!?
This woman is amazing.
People refuse to watch the film, but they criticize it and want it banned. Total lack of logic and reason. Pure emotion. Pathetic. Then others give into the pressure knowing that that the groups pressuring them HAVE NOT WATCHED THE FILM! What has happened to this world?
Amazing to see all the donations and support for Meg and this film. 500k at the go fund me page, truly inspiring!
As a retired firefighter I can identify my Meg on that level. But she is an extraordinary brilliant person 👏 and her bravery is exemplary.
I am awestruck at the things Meg has done in her life! Her accomplishments and experiences would take 10 ordinary lifetimes to achieve.
Amazing podcast. But well worth it. Wonderful to see the GoFundMe number soaring. This podcast could be the one that breaks the dam. Hopefully other big name podcasters will interview her now - Jordan P, Josh R, Lex F. Get her on !!!!!
I wanted know more about who instigated the unjust campaign against her.
Just donated to the gofundme; wishing much luck to Meg and hope to see the film soon!
My laptop mysteriously stopped working and I have to find someone to restart it from scratch. The error message says that I will lose my files, and have to reinstall the programs. I only do simple things on my phone online and don't want to download apps etc.
Can't check Go found me, but I am overly excited to know that Meg, her crew and their documentary will have a chance to find the rightful audience. I love good endings and justice at work!
what a crazy story, thanks Sam for having her on and posting the full thing. important stuff
I appreciate your attempts to keep her on track and moving forward towards the point. It was difficult to have the constant sidebars and trying to get back on track. Certainly, she’s very interesting but it was all over the place.
Thank you, Sam, for releasing the entire interview. I, too, was one of those people who didn't think cancellation was much to get excited about, but, shit, was I wrong.
Good for you Sam for giving Meg a much needed platform to tell her story.
I'm really glad the entire interview is on here. At the same time i feel like I listened to that exact same interview on Megyn Kelly. A lot of Deja-Vu moments for sure. Really looking forward to seeing this film in any case. What a fascinating personality!
Absolutely love you Sam Harris. I've been following you for awhile now. You and Christopher Hitchens were very influential at a time I was questioning my Christian faith. I have made peace with my decision since then. I wish you the very best. Stay true to your principles Sam. You give such an eloquent voice to so many.
Remember, he did call Hitchens's treatment of the Forbidden Knowledge" of Charles Murray morally and intellectually dishonest and driven by ideology
Donated immediately after listening. I look forward to seeing the film some day, hopefully a major distributor grows a spine, or at least pretends to.
Meg's GoFundMe is pushing $480k right now. That's what I call a win for critical thinking. A Sam Harris win.
WOW! Sam donated $25,000 on gofundme.
Unsurprised and proud in equal measure.
@@bertrandrussell894 Yes, felt the same way!
It's up to $600k
Psychopaths may be rare, but there sure seems to be a surplus of cowards lately. Free speech is under attack from all sides, and often over nothing at all.
Love how he uploaded the full episode for this one
I couldn't stop it the first 42 minutes, but now I have to go make some dinner. Great podcast!
Where can we watch The Unredacted?
I've never been more excited watching a go fund me number go up.
What hope do we have when the gate keepers of entertainment deny it, and say there’s no such thing. They say cancel culture is just accountability.
Killing hitler is cancel culture.. stopping stalin was cancel culture.. destroying the kkk = cancel culture XD by your standards.
Which Harris is thrilled with as long as it takes down Trump.
This is so fucking sad and dangerous. This talented, smart, brave badass woman didn't deserve this cancel culture bullshit.
Full disclosure I've not seen the film yet from listening to this woman for 3 hours its obvious to me she wasn't going to make an anti Islamic film.
I admire her courage and her huge heart.
Thank you Sam for giving her some more exposure. I will absolutely donate to her gofundme.
This was one of the most enthralling podcast episodes I've ever heard. What a story. I cannot wait to see the film. Keep fighting Meg!
This was truly excellent, thank you!
.. this brings to mind what I recently heard an American Indian fellow say,.. " you can't hug the murder out of capitalism..
Absolutely amazing. Thank you Sam for sharing your platform and providing Meg a place to plead her case and inform the world of her struggle.
Stay strong Meg, the only one's who need to apologise are Sundance, the Gutless Capitulators and the dogmatic lynch mob.
I just finished listen to this incredible podcast. Thank you for bringing this cancellation to light, and using your platform to point the spotlight on this incredible film.
As someone who works in the film industry, I am absolutely disgusted by this behaviour.
The confidence she has is amazing!
Damn Sam... huge thanks for bringing this to light. There's not a chance in the world I would've ever heard about this, and though seemingly small and insignificant in the world of everything that is going on, is actually super important.
I will be donating and hope Meg can get this film out there. Such a good bit of gold in all this and prime example of what the world needs to see, hear, and accept, even if they don't agree.
You can have your privileges and eat moral superiority too…
"Cultural appropriation and representation started as reasonable concerns" . . . Reeeeaaally??? How so?
A composer of music can mix and match anything and any ideas they wish to use. With whatever hardware serves their purpose. The only caveat being obeying modern copyright laws when the matching gets a little too close.
@@endoalley680 because their desperation to curve out a piece of spotlight from other people's history long abuse and exploitation is not compassion. It is virtue signaling and entitlement, to be seen as "the one who is more developed and most progressive". It is only an image and the King has no clothes. Many afraid to say the obvious because they worried of the King's courthouse and those who have perks at his table.
Who are the the great female rock n rollers of all time? Janis; Grace; Linda; Tina; Stevie & a few lessors. Currently, Pink still reigns supreme. Doesn’t lip sync plagiarize or pimp herself. Pure talent.
Thank you for this great interview!
A fascinating conversation! Best of luck to Meg with her documentary, which I would love to see!
Where can I watch this documentary, if it is available at all
Just donated to her Go Fund Me. It's now at $530k!!! That's just incredible and I wish her the best
Excellent episode! Thanks Sam! I would pay to watch the movie (whether or not a trailer is made)
This was a fascinating and sad story. It’s unfortunate that so many people who didn’t even mother to watch the film participated in preventing it from a larger audience.
Thanks Sam. And thank you MEG for your resilience. Along with many in this comment section I have not seen the film, but I'm trusting that it will move me. Great conversation. And yes, balls of titanium if not steel🤙🏾😎
The part about her translator being threatened with ostracism made me sick. The worst of the woke mob
As somebody that doesn’t necessarily agree with you always, respect Sam.
I love your mind. You’ve been a voice of reason in many different scenarios and a vital component of my ability to think critically. It’s a shame to see how divided this audience has become when there is so much agreement on nuanced topics here. Perhaps you see the WEF and their correlatives as a non-issue, but many of your followers don’t. It would be great if you could explicitly address how you see their role, because it’s easy to assume the worst with the absence of direct comment from you.
Thank you and all the best
Lol a great reset conspiracist. Wtf draws you to Sam Harris, a logical thinker?
@@pathologicaldoubt Anything can become really logical if you ignore reality and make stuff up 😄
Agree on this a lot. While I hate cancel culture, I've come to dislike most of the so-called intellectual dark web too. Sam is the only person that I find to always stick to his principles, even if I don't agree with them all the time.
Much easier to believe that these actors are deliberately being malicious and the great reset explains how that could be the case.
Hopefully not feeding a troll here but regardless, that's the logic.
@@pathologicaldoubt wow a conspiracy theory now is it! its not like they are openly screaming how they have penetrated western governments (and all of the places they have have curiously been a horror show ever since), how you will eat bugs, and are behind the esg fraud that has netherlands take the lands from its citizens, and DIRECTLY caused sri lanka blowing up immiediately after implementing it.
do me a favor and take a look at the places in the world that has 98, 99% esg score, and see if you notice any particular trend.
turns out its easy to have a low esg score if you run economically infeasable, inefficient practices and blow up in depressions and lose about all of their industrial capacity shortly after implementing them...
In a long line up of amazing interviews, this is right up at the top. Thanks Sam, thanks Meg. I look forward to watching this movie.
The institution that is Sundance Film Festival needs to release another apology, really, really soon.
Something strange just happened
I'm in Ireland & I heard the first 30 - 40 seconds of your podcast & then it wouldn't play
All technical difficulty has been ruled out
You need to know
How do we watch this doc now? Easily the most interesting film I’ve heard of in years
