The reason that Sam is willfully misrepresented so often is actually a backhanded compliment....they believe he is more dangerous to their cause than most. This is the case because he is so well read, articulate, reasonable, principled and at turns very funny. If he goes after your cause/ideology he tends to do real damage.

That last response about being present really hit home for me. If you can’t be happy right now, and are consistently chasing happiness, you will never make contact with your life. That is how I interpreted that for myself and I’m going to reflect on that more.

1:20 to add to this portion of the conversation; I’m a pianist, and I developed tendinitis in both my wrists at one point of my piano career ; I was running around to different doctors, desperately looking for relief from my tendinitis. I eventually met one Doctor Who told me he wanted to put me on antidepressants as a remedy… his explanation was: “ it’s not that you didn’t have a wrist injury, and the pain isn’t real; it’s that your psychological reaction to the pain isn’t allowing you to heal”. After a few weeks of antidepressants, my pain went away, and I was able to play piano again.

This is why practicing mindfulness is so important to me, because that's difficult to realize in the moment. Bringing up topics like AA, Eckart Tolle, mind-body pain connections, therapy, etc. was really interesting.

    My fave Sam Harris quote:
"I think what we want is a circumstance where attention can be located in the present in a way that's truly fulfilling. And unless you have had some kind of radical insight that allows you to do that on demand, you are in some sense hostage to the circumstances of your life to do that for you. You're constantly trying to engineer a state of the world that will propagate back on a state of self that will make the present moment good enough.
The question, it's like, how much can you puncture that seeking-happiness project with the recognition that you're already free? That's what meditation makes possible. You can keep just 1,000 times a day letting some daylight into this search space."

Someone shares a quote they like of Harris giving a very articulate explanation of how we try and fail to make ourselves happy and why meditation offers an alternative path, and all you can think to do is minimize it. Someone just explained in very articulate and defensible terms what is pretty much the secret to living a good life and you’re all “like wow bro, so profound bro… NOT.” 🤦 You wrote your comment like most people know this. They don’t. In fact, the fact that you don’t see the profundity and universality in it and are trying to reduce it to something a surfer bro would say just further demonstrates the importance of the quote.

I have watched a lot of Sam Harris interviews and this is undoubtedly one of the best. You touched on many interesting topics I have not heard him speak about. Well done!

I think you did an amazing job! You asked real questions. Many times I said aloud “that’s a good question!” Because it’s something I really cared to hear Sam opine on.

Good job Joe. You had the energy some of your fans have when meeting you post show. So much to ask in so little time. You should be way more proud of the space you occupy. You're not a mess. You're a super accomplished dude, great husband and dad now too. Sure he's got his accolades, but stand proud on your own greatness. Great job with the comment on his dark obsession with Yogis Gone Wild. He took it well too. 😂

When he talked about living “the bad dream” when subjecting ourselves to bad memories…I feel like he defined a neural-pathway too often chosen and even STRENGTHEN out of habit, and maybe not choice-but a route taken by many I love who struggle most with their mental-health AND even by many who I love who feel so strongly about religious beliefs, which I feel almost makes them cling tighter to both… it just makes me so…helpless yet, hopeful that theres got to be a way to help one see their route from outside the car..instead of just going the same way… and I think it starts with conversations like this so thank you both very much. As a mom, open-mid comedian, marital artist, spiritual/not-religious but raised mormon woman-who LOVES people, the world, and is obsessed with learning about the brain and neuroplasticity -I fucking loved so many points touched on..Cheers. I would be so curious as to his thoughts on Dr. Amens work and SPECT scans and their legitimacy.. seems if they DO work-they should be utilized more for all before medicating people for mental health issues..maybe a future guest?!

This was such a great interview. You asked some of the questions I would have always wanted to ask him. Here are a few interesting things he said:
It's not that at some point you become constantly mindful. No. Even for him, after years of practice, he still gets lost in the emotions of the moment and use them as opportunities for mindfulness. This clarifies lots of things.
The question about meditation versus therapy was right on point. I was once encouraging a friend to do therapy and he said: mediation makes you realize that problem you need therapy for, doesn't exist in the first place. And I have been wondering if these two tools are substitutable. I liked Sam's response that that therapy teaches you techniques that you wouldn't learn through meditations.
Your question about Eckart Tole was mine too. The fact that he never mentions him. I see his point of view now.
And oh my God, you criticism about Sam's obsession with these monster gurus! I never thought this bothers someone else this much too. When I read his Waking Up book, I got so angry in that section that I almost questioned Sam's "reading the room" ability. I am like dude, no one cares about these mother fuckers. Let gooo..
One last question I wish you had asked: all these daily meditations on his app. How many of them has he recorded and does he record more occasionally or it's a database he created for hours and hours of guided sessions to be randomly played? 😄

Pleasantly surprised that you’re a daily meditator. No one better than Sam imo. Removes all the sectarian nonsense and fancy foreign jargon. I also find his voice very grounding and relaxing. And he always seems to know just when I lose attention and breaks the silence to bring me back. Been using the App for 2yrs now. Can’t believe I’ve lived this long without this phenomenological toolkit. Thanks to both of you.
