Hi Will, I love your channel, watch all your videos. But sick for a fortnight, 197 hr in warm up and talking of pbs - I feel that’s possibly a little irresponsible given the reach you have - especially to amateur runners (like me) who look up to you, respect you, and take lots of guidance from you.
Hope you take this in the manner it’s intended - just honest feedback and out of concern for you.
Well done pulling back at 6k. That felt like a smart move.

I bumped into Will during the race and we he told me he was ill, the first thing I said was “what are you doing here?”. I too think Will is a great guy, but as you say this is not a good message. Sadly I think there are bigger TH-cam channels that promote similar behaviour and some of the smaller channels follow for the click bait.

@conradburdekin722 Thanks for the comment it’s always great to get feedback whatever it is.
You should never look up to me as someone you look for guidance in running! A 4 time failed sub 3 marathoner should give you enough info to not follow me as guidance. I’m not a coach or have any UK athletic credentials whatsoever and I’m not an even high level club runner. 😂
The channels content is absolutely not made for informing or trying to give running knowledge/guidance to other runners (some very early running tips videos did but I stopped this)
It’s to document my journey as a hobbyist amateur runner. With this comes all the faults, failures, learnings and risks vs rewards. It’s a bumpy journey I’m trying to figure out myself.
I do disagree with the “irresponsible” message you mentioned. This is not a message to say race if you are ill. There is no message. It’s a vlog of my experience and in this video made a judgement I was coming out of illness and still believed I could run a PB which wasn’t 37 mins it was anything under 38:32 which I actually could have done if I pushed hard from 6/7km. I didn’t want to so I eased off and felt happy to cruise under 40mins. I crossed the finish feeling fine.
It’s hard to judge what your body can do. Plenty of inspirational people in running and other sports talk about adversity, ranging from illness, injury and mental obstacles and still do great things. Each situation is different from person to person. There are no set rules. Plenty of people from amateurs to pros will decide themselves on what’s possible or not and that’s why there’s so many great stories to tell regardless if it’s success or failure.
In hindsight I did actually get an GP appointment a few days after and was prescribed antibiotics for a viral infection. If I knew this before I probably wouldn’t have turned up or ran it easy at least.
Finally, I appreciate the few individuals who actively follow and engage with my journey. However, I don't think about my “reach” which, let's be honest, is absolutely tiny. Even if I had a larger presence on TH-cam, I wouldn't alter my actions to appease the audience.

@@PoetWithPace If you are implying I did this for click bait then it’s clear you have no clue what this channel is about. There is no message, that’s on yourselves to decide what the content did for you. I do not control this or attempt to tailor it. This is my experience, my journey simple as that. Your opinion is subjective on what is considered a “good” or “bad” message. The fact is just because you found a message and applied a negative opinion on it doesn’t make it true for everybody. Some of my biggest inspirations have come from the ultra running world where stories would chill my bones but make me wonder what’s possible and how someone can elevate through such adversity to find out what’s possible. Courtney Dauwalter spoke about breaking down, no sleep, pushing through crazy hallucinations. Yet if she didn’t have this inside of her she probably wouldn’t have become one of the greatest ultra runners. People will take her experience and make of it what they will, like you have with my experience but don’t brand it as a bad message as factual. What you mean to say is you personally wouldn’t do it and that’s fine.
I also genuinely have no clue what you are talking about with other bigger channels doing such behaviour and smaller channels copying….If that’s what you think about my channel then you really should think about unsubscribing as it feels you don’t have a positive outlook on mine. If I have mistaken what you are saying then I apologise, it’s sometimes hard to understand the context and tone in type online! Either way it’s all good and happy for any comments to be debated.

@@TheWu Will, I really appreciate this thoughtful and detailed reply. Thank you for taking the time to respond. And not only that but pinning my comment - I feel a little bit star struck! Seriously tho, it’s greatly appreciated. I do realise you’re not presenting a ‘how to’ message for runners and I do like the honesty in your videos. Thanks for creating content that is extremely entertaining.
Also: look after yourself and that lovely family of yours 👍👍

@@TheWu Hi Will, I’m not encouraged to do what you do or anyone else, but watching your videos and your sub-3 journey is inspiring. You’re a decent and open guy who tries to improve and deal with adversity and people can see that. Don’t be discouraged, I think you’re appreciated by many.

Good to see you on the route. Great honest video and great to see some of my clubmates making Cameo appearances. Hopefully you're feeling better now. I also had cold so failed in my sub 40 attempt but sometimes we have to appreciate that even when we're not 100% We're still running faster than a lot of people. Good luck for upcoming races 😃

Great effort Will. It’s amazing how often you get ill when you’ve got young kids, keep at it! Will look out for you at the North Lincs half. Did the 10k last year, apart from a couple of fly overs it’s all flat 👍

Thoroughly enjoyed this albeit at your expense! If you're an amateur, I'm a complete novice as I've only been running for a couple of years but all I see are fitness influencers on YT. It's a welcome change to see a youtuber showing us the grim side of running. That's especially useful for me as I've entered runs in the last year only to be set back with an injury beforehand or feeling rubbish on the day! Thanks again.

Yeah I mean luckily I was on the very end of it and I was prescribed some antibiotics on the following week which seems to have also helped give a final push to recovery. If I knew beforehand I needed antibiotics I wouldn't have run hard at all.

well done there Will and well done to slow up listening to your body. A lot have had that nasty virus of late , me included have just got rid of it. It leaves you run down. I was there at the dewsbury and any PBS were given up in first 2 miles. I knew to listen to my body. came in 15 secs off my PB, which got me a finish not DNF. That psychologically was hard for many with illnesses and a hard long dark wet winter. Well done again Will for showing runners are humans.

As StevenC said, 197HR on the warm up is off the charts, congratulations on the 39 though💪I had something similar happen on the Prom Classic, got to about 2/3K and just felt drained, cruised the remainder and enjoyed the experience along the Promenade des Anglais😊 I’d had a nasty chest thing at Christmas and a 32 minute Parkrun on NY day so it can take ages to get over viruses.

Yes for sure, at the time I just thought it was a cold/flu etc and I was coming out of it so gambled a bit. In hindsight if I had my GP appointment before the race instead of after I wouldn't have gone hard at all.
