    It actually shifts pretty quick for a regular automatic. The reason you said it shifts slow is because you were simply cruising around. When you give it full throttle and approach red line, it shifts a lot faster. Most Infiniti's do this actually.

    • @aaronalger1464
      @aaronalger1464 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      JoshorBrownKid Shift speed definitely changes with amount of throttle, took a while to get used to it. If you are giving it light throttle it shifts very slow like demonstrated here but at heavy throttle the shifts are instantaneous

      JoshorBrownKid yes. This is true.

    • @ModernDayMixtapes
      @ModernDayMixtapes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is 100% true. When upshifting while full/near full throttle, the upshifts can actually be quite aggressive. Much faster than when the car shifts on its own at full throttle

      I'd disagree the transmission is nearly 2 generation behind the latest ZF offerings, this is the same transmission as the G37 simply tweaked a bit. Not only that but the transmission in the Q50 RS400 is running very close to the limits of rated operation (380-ft lbs) and the Q50 is putting an average of 375ft-lbs to the wheel according to most dynos.

    Really cool to see that they are using the same paddles and mounting position as the pre 2017 GTRs. One of my favorite feeling paddles of all time with quite a satisfying pull and click feeling. From inside the cockpit, that was one unique sounding acceleration. Have been waiting for this one. Awesome detailed review!

      If you are looking for an infiniti with red leather, Look for an IPL infiniti. Such as, the g37 coupe IPL. Optioned with a manual trans its a blast to drive, and a black car with red interior? Theyre beautiful. May be harder to find though!

  • @Sam-mw5hx

    Agreed with everything you pointed out in this video. Infiniti used to have a more sporty edge and power in the past like the G35 and G37 but it kinda seems now they don't know which side to take weather it be sporty or comfort so they ended up in a weird spot trying to compromise. Let's hope they bring back their sporty side once again

  • @CheatCodeG80
    @CheatCodeG80 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's actually a pretty good transmission. Infiniti programmed the manual up-shifts to be slow when upshifting under very little throttle application for comfort (e.g. When Matt demonstrated the slow upshifts). However when under heavier throttle applications the upshifts are much faster (e.g Matt's initial acceleration run).

    I've driven one before (not the red sport) and it felt very artificial. The technology is great, there's great potential, but some details still need to be ironed out before I would consider getting one of these. It doesn't help that the price point is so high compared to other manufacturers...
    Great HONEST review in my opinion!

    • @jmasoncars4452
      @jmasoncars4452 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @DC Williams I'm enjoying it so far. I haven't had any issues with it but I only have a little over 2,000 miles on it so far. I bought the red sport coming from a 2007 Acura TL Type S. There are some key features that I feel it should have in this price range but I think that's why you're able to get such a big discount on them. Electronic parking brake, brake hold folding mirrors, rear seat heaters apple/android auto aren't available. With that being said there are some standard features on the red sport that cost a lot on other cars(360 camera, Auto dimming side mirrors, ability to personalize your performance settings, Dynamic digital suspension) one thing this car does very well is straight-line acceleration, it's actually laughable sometimes when taking off from a stand still. As far as handling goes you have to get rid of the stock Dunlop run-flats or find a red sport with the conventional tire package ($300 option). The dunlops are absolute garbage. New tires 100% completely transform the handling of the car and the digital Dynamic suspension on the red sport also helps. So far I'm very happy but coming from a 2007 TL compared to a 2015 BMW might feel a little different but I still think with the discount Infiniti is offering you aren't going to find a car this good this cheap.

    • @jmasoncars4452
      @jmasoncars4452 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @DC Williams yes! I Feel the same about the transmission. It's slow when driving slow but fast when you're driving aggressive. I just posted a 0-60 of my RS on my channel and you can clearly see how fast it shifts. Good luck on getting the price you want! It's a great car.

    Matt, for the upshift to be quicker, you gotta be on the throttle at least 60% then the upshifts will be quicker. If you are steady on the throttle and you upshift then it will upshift slower.

    Hey subaruwrxfan. I've always been Nissan/Infiniti cars fan. Not sure if you know, but Infiniti Q50 has 'adaptive transmission' so when you don't push it, transmission adjust to your driving behavior. Hence, slow shifting. However, when you push the petal to the metal, the shifts are quick enough. i think this Q50 Red Sport 400 is the fastest sedan right now (do not mention M3) and may be expensive new, but buy it used 1-2 years. Prices drop tremendously. I'm doing my research right now, and I found one for $37k and 20k miles. Like your videos. Just add more exhaust notes. Thanks and keep up the good work.

    Hi. Its actually funny that last time you reviewed this car with 3.7 engine, it would have been 10 out of 10 for you if it had more power... Now they give you 400hp, nothing else changed in this car and all of the sudden its not such a good choice. Hmmm... either way, I know that they will put the double clutch 7 speed from the new Qx30 into this car very soon, according to the dealer. Will be a blast. Also, you can lease these for way under $500/month for red sport, which is way less then comparable Germans or others.

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, it's funny because I was expecting to like this car a lot more than I did. Either the AWD from this one saps all the fun (the 2015 model I reviewed was RWD), or something changed with the suspension tuning for the Red Sport version that made it worse. Either that or I've just driven a lot of awesome sport sedans in the past year and a half since I reviewed the older Q50 and am not as easily impressed now that I've experienced more enjoyable sedans for the same money. As for the 7 speed, if it's the Mercedes unit, it'll shift faster but then it'll have the same problem I complained about in my CLA45 AMG review. The clutch engagement from a stop is laggy. In my opinion, offering a manual and a ZF 8 speed would be the best 2 transmissions for this car.

    • @romanc4884
      @romanc4884 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Mat. Everybody seems not to like the Red400... Have to actually test it because I'm enjoying my 3.7 AWD, its a lot of fun and transmission is not too bad in it, with time it adapted to the way I drive as well as gas pedal, plus I have the convectional steering rack set up, which is great too. But once this one is over, considering the VW R, not sure how it will stand up to the luxury standard that Q has as performance should be on par...

    I appreciate the enthusiasm you have for these car reviews. But I really wish you have something more profound to say then really great and really good and awesome. I think when you talk about how a car looks you should do more research for the design language and the reasons behind why things are executed the way they are . Most of the time you are just throwing out adjectives that may or may not be an objective or informative piece of information. Anyway keep up the good work and do more reviews with more research behind them

    Lots of people talk shit about Infiniti's dual screen layout, but I personally like it since I can keep radio info & navigation on at the same time. The exterior is also the best of all the Japanese premium sedans, but the rear-end can use a diffuser on the sport model. The interior's only let down is the leather is plentiful, they feel thin & hollow when compared to Mercedes or Lexus; I had a tester that with only ~25000miles with noticeable nicks in the doors & seats. Not good.
    I drove a 2015 Q50S Hybrid with DAS, but had no adaptive dampers. DAS is quite nice, which I find odd so much car reviewers hate it. When in sport mode, it feels better then the Electronic power steering employed by other marques. The ride is on the rough side; I was fine by my sister who rode with me complained about it on the highway, as well as higher than average noise. The 3.5 Hybrid V6 for me was the best feature; you can get 30MPG avg. in city, smooth start-stop, regenerative braking backed with Akebono-sourced brakes, and flooring it yields 360hp + 400lb/ft of instant electric torque. I can only imagine how the even more powerful 3.0TT would be like.

    The transmission shifts quite quickly under acceleration. Just not at partial throttle.

    • @TranceFur
      @TranceFur 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vlican Most driving is done at top gear, while not shifting gears. Most gear shifting is done during acceleration. Therefore, I don't see why it really matters if a car doesn't have lightning fast shifts at partial throttle.

      Killerket good question. But answer depends on what you preference is. I think if you take good care of it, change engine oil every 5K the twin turbos and engine will last you a good time. It’s a fast car for sure, lexus May be slower, but toyota has made good and reliable cars for a while. It’s personal choice really

      Killerket I would also try to snag one with a later year, that way you have 4 year/40K warranty still on it, it transfers to second/third owner etc

    If you compare this review to your other Lexus GS F review you aren't as excited in the power. You say the shifting and trans is basically decent. You are super excited with the GS F. They have the same 0-60 times and the Q50 is 0.1 sec faster in the 1/4 mile. Sometimes you can't just go by the feel or sound.

    I had a 2009 G37x and the 7 speed was awful compared to my 2012 X5 35i with the 8 speed transmission. Also, sometimes the transmission would get confused and not go into any gear which I found out was common. These cars are great but Nissan should bail on this transmission now and go with ZF or the 10 speed developed by GM and Ford.

      A sleeper is a car that is dirt cheap and everyone knows is slow, but is modded the fuck out of. Like a minivan, a bus or a camry. A vehicle such as this that is very fast even without a sports package is not a sleeper, it's a luxury car. Infinity and lexus are luxury japanese brands. Most luxury cars are not only comfortable but also fast.

    • @PrinceDavid
      @PrinceDavid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Admiral Ackbar No. A sleeper car doesn't have to be cheap. It just has to be unassuming. It's a sleeper because you don't expect such a bland car to be so fast.

      I don't consider any Infiniti from 2003+ (G35/G37, FX35 etc.) to be bland. Someone who knows a little about cars will know that a VQ V6 engine is no slouch, even stock.

    The motor sounds in the interior are somewhat like the move "Speed Racer" - I wonder if they are "enhancing" the sounds... I was checking out the couple when shopping for a SUV for my wife - I'd consider one of these (in couple form) vs. a Mustang (I would be looking for a "GT Car" not really a sport car - so a long distance cruiser). I'd say that Ford could still win in my mind after the 10 speed auto, dual mode exhaust, magnetic dampeners, and normally aspirated V8 motor - if only Ford would offer AWD in the Mustang and I'd be completely sold.... Driving an Edge Sport now but miss my '15 Mustang GT Performance Pack. The Q50 price really isn't that bad - options push the competition up - especially in the Jag where some stand alone options are quite pricey. The BMW's base price might be competitive but by the time you add X-Drive and some nice to have options you're looking at $80k+.... Good review Matt - keep up the great work!

  • @skyrunr

    After having a G37x for 3 years, and now a Q50 3.0t, you have to learn to mash the gas, shift early, and shift at the same time. The transmission is made for just that and it will pull 100% through the shift. Probably faster than anyone would manage in a stick. Try it. I much prefer the G37x because it feels connected to the road, the near perfect steering could actually use a lighter mode for commuting, and is all around more fun under 50mph. However, the twin turbo's are VERY noticeable above 50mph and way above 50mph. The Q50 3.0T is geared way too high. Drive it light and it gets 26mpg, but with normal spirited driving I'm getting 3-4mpg less than my G37x. I had a 3.7 Q50 as a loaner and got much worse gas mileage than both. They also need to make the 3.0T noisy enough so that you don't have to abuse it to hear it. Even if it was through the speakers I'd take it... Intouch is completely useless. I might be old school, but all the buttons feel the same. I could change every setting in my '82 escort without looking. 20" of screen and you have to dig through menu after menu. Just try and get to that almost neat driving performance screen which should be in the top screen btw.
    There's a factory diffuser kit that makes it much sportier. There's an auto mode for the steering wheel heat, took me a while to find it too, but works great. Auto on the seats is perfect too (other settings are mostly too hot). Surprised at your review of the suspension. After a week or so I started pushing it until it activated the DDS. I couldn't get the car to slide or anywhere near its limits. You need to be on a track because I'd only describe it as like a video game. I took my cousin who's driven just about everything out, and he couldn't believe how fast we went through some S's. I think he screamed "okay I have children!" at one point.

      skyrunr skyrunr when you had your G37 did you try putting it in snow for commuting? I'm asking because I have a G25x. I thought the 25x would be a better choice because it has a smoother tranny and better for commuting but it quickly realized you need the power and the options it seems like you can't win with cars

    • @skyrunr
      @skyrunr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Run Nokian WG4 all season V rated tires and set the snow mode (applies power 50/50 instead of 30/70). The more I drive my Q50 AWD the more I miss my G37x. There are all sorts of little annoying quirks with the displays and drive modes. I didn't realize this until someone commented how much they love their old V8 truck. I just don't get that grin in the Q50 versus the G37x.

    • @brotherderrickcoaches
      @brotherderrickcoaches 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you miss it enough to trade the q50 in for it back? That's the real question lol

    • @skyrunr
      @skyrunr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would in a second, if it was a financial wash. The buy-out was really high on my G's lease. I think I can tune the 3.0T to be closer to the 400's specs, but the G37x was nice out of the box. Which is why I buy luxury cars; so I don't have to do anything to them. ;)

    i came back to this review and i noticed that this car is priced below the competition. what makes it expensive is all the driver assistance tech that's optional and there's very little reviewers that show how good those actually work. i seen a review where the reviewer actually let the car drive itself. nissan/infiniti poineered alot of tech that other car manufacturers often follow and that's why there tech package make their cars pricy cause of R&D. this DAS tech is gonna be the future of autonomous driving one day and i don't think infiniti going get the credit for it until one of the germans do it because of brand. car enthusiasts are not the best reviewers for all cars as they focus mainly on power and driving dynamics and that's the entire review of most cars these days. i think to make these channels more objectionable, these reviewers should do real world testing with real people. like have your wife/gf/bf or just a friend drive the car, use the tech and compare the different stimuli derived from it's total operation. it'll give these channel a less bias stance in terms of driving dynamics to a regular guy in comparison to an enthusiast and much more use of its tech so us viewers can really see the full functionality of it's options/package which we'll pay more money for. it goes for all cars, not just this infiniti. I'm yet to see how FEB alerts the driver or actually works...i did saw in other review non American the lane keep assist and stopping itself. it'll make for a more rounded review and justification of price for these luxury sport cars
