I'm going to take you on a tour of the Infiniti Q50, and then I'm going to drive it and tell you what the Q50 Red Sport 400 is like on the road.

Let’s be real, nobody is going to drive a car with 400 HP economically
If you’ve ever been in a rush to get somewhere and you’re running low on gas you will want to drive economically or you’ll have to stop and get gas and it will make your trip longer and you’ll watch all the cars you just passed pass you by because they didn’t use all their gas up driving un-economically. Ask me how I know.

08 g35 owner here and I can say around 40% of the interior pieces are identical 8 years later
So much of the interior looks like a g37's interior, the gauge cluster and top infotainment give it away.
Bruce Hadley actually the g35 has soft touch plastics all over while this car gets real scratchy cheap plastic below the window controls
Ha, can’t expect much from Nissan/Infiniti these days. 370Z still being sold and interior is still the same from when it came out in 2009
@@DivineKaze Yep. And calling the Maxima a "4 door sports car" while still shoving a CVT down your throat. Nissan has no interesting vehicles on sale right now (besides the slightly outdated GTR and severely outdated 370Z). Most of their vehicles are just outdated. (They still offer the QR25, which came out in 2002, in the 2020 Altima, without even direct injection.)

It does because all day long the Infiniti will be cheaper. The q50 red sport is a in between the 330-m3 or 340i m sport. For that reason it’s best in class. There are not many cars that fits it’s where the red sport is.

I’ve always liked Infiniti. Cars are underrated. Always have been a fan of the Q70s and the Q60s
I 100% agree! I have a 2015 Black Q70L and it's amazing, I love it! It's fast, comfortable and a real joy to drive for-sure. In my opinion, the Q70 series, has the best interior and really makes it look like a luxury car. When i bought it, a lot of my friends didn't even know what it was but, they all liked how it looked. I've wanted one for years ever since my uncle got his back when they first came out with this model

The problem is the competition getting so much better and Infiniti just falling behind every step of the way. You can't expect people to pay that price for such an underwhelming car.
The Infiniti Q50 is sold as a Skyline in Japan. The paddle shifters are from the Nissan GTR.

Bought a used 2016 Q50 red sport for my wife 2 days ago and it’s not as bad as what Doug sets it out to be. It’s actually a masterpiece from Infiniti. Coming from a Honda guy I’m impressed at what this car has and can do. Aggressive styling and man when you stomp on that pedal....I almost shit my pants.

Hey Doug, I doubt you'll see this, but just a couple of notes:
The Q50 indeed does have Adaptive Cruise Control and has had it available since the car was released for model year 2014, but it is an optional package. If that car didn't have it, then the buyer didn't opt for it.
The Q50 also went through a refresh. Upon release, there were three engine configurations: a diesel model (EU only), the 3.7L V6 carried over from the G37, and a Hybrid in the form of a 3.5L V6 paired with an electric motor. Those were all phased out in favor of the turbo-charged models (though I think the Hybrid is still available in Japan).

My 2008 g35 red sport has adaptive cruise control

I've owned my 07 G35 Sport Coupe and it has to be the best cheap sports car you can get for under 10k. I've owned mine since day one no issues.

@@softbread5703 Coming from someone who has owner a G35 to Q50 to a Q60 RS there great cars plus the parts a cheap yes its lacks in some areas like the infotainment system but you also have to think about all this digital and electronic in new cars are that breaks it will not be cheap test drive one and see I chose my Q60RS over a M4

Under appreciated and underrated for sure. I bought a 2018 Infiniti Q50 luxe over a 2018 BMW 330i. The top screen has been updated to display whatever you want and does not have lag issues. Everybody who gets into the car says “wow, this is nice,” including my bmw and Audi friends. The dark wood grain trim on the luxe model is very classy and makes it look more updated. Hope Doug reviews a newer model.

But honestly thats also true. Most manufacturers just want to do the job "good enough" and be competitive, but no one hardly ever put true soul and passion into these cars, often because they have a short 5-6 year life cycle at max anyways and the industry moves onwards so quickly. In that regard it's better to do more niche vehicles like small sportscars, supercars, very high end luxury and performance cars etc, as they can reap benefit of the hard work for longer.

I think more needs to be said about the Q50 styling and reliability. The cost of ownership for many of the Q50 rivals is substantially higher for similar performance.

@@Enthusiastlist it doesn’t apply to this current generation of Lexus vs Infiniti, but back when the IS line was much more prominent ( mainly IS350), the G35/G37 simply were had more power. It was more sporty than the Lexuses. That’s why it would’ve appealed more. Now, i would always choose a current gen Lexus over an Infiniti for performance. They’ve got way more substance in their lineup against Infinit in 2022.But, like i said, take it back 15 years or so, and Infiniti was a direct challenger in terms of performance. That’s what I feel would’ve been the answer as to why someone would choose an Infiniti over a Lexus. However, I do agree with you.
@@hwburner1524 that’s fair the G35 and G37 when they were introduced even sent BMW back to the drawing board on how to make a proper 3 series. Current day though I’d have to go Lexus and really I wouldn’t even have a second thought about it. For what it’s worth the VR30 used in the Q50 / Q60 has had a ton of issues from turbo failures at low mileage to fuel injectors and carbon buildup.

I have a 2015 Q50. It’s a 3.7 liter with paddle shifters, great sound system, decent handling, super quiet, 0-60 in low 5 seconds, and a very stable high speed platform. And the best part about the car is the reliability..hands down better than any German car. If you’re going to pay the bills, you’ve got to keep that in mind. I owned a Mercedes and it was great in its own way but it was at the mechanic about every six weeks. I just can’t standby and let this guy rag on what is a pretty decent GT car. Sure, I would like a BMW M but the price and maintenance costs just don’t compare with an Infiniti. Thanks for letting me add my humble opinion.

I think that's at least a 2017 because the red sport came out in 2016 and the red brake calipers came out in 2017. I think the paddle shifter on the 2018 are attached to the steering wheel.

They’re a really great bargain if you get one a few years old with 50,000 miles. I’ve been driving a 2010 Versa while I’ve been in school and I’d gladly take a 2014 Infiniti. Anything would be an upgrade from where I’m at. I’d like to have a more comfortable car to drive.

I know it’s not a special edition, but I really love the FX35, the exhaust sound was so nice.
I actually prefer the analog gauge cluster. Real moving parts are more elegant than graphics on a 2-dimensional screen.

Modern Infinitis are for people who want a reliable power train with premium interior materials but don’t necessarily care for the latest tech (Not sure why that’s a hard concept for you to grasp).
Also, you imply the companies financial incentives are a drawback of the brand
I’ll admit Nissan isn’t as innovative as they used to be, but they’ve already made it known for several years now that their lineup will be overhauled by 2022

They're the same car. The Q60 just had 2 doors instead of 4. Making it much less practical. Otherwise they have identical performance metrics.
If anything the Q50 is better because is lighter 🤷🏻♂️

I know this video is old as hell but Doug never gave Infiniti’s the respect they deserve. Infinitis are made to be super reliable with low maintenance cost and sort of fast they make the best daily driver
Just bought a 2017 q50 premium, it's a pretty car, got plenty of horse power, and it's a smooth ride. Couldn't care less about the infotainment, I mainly bought it for the power and looks. I'm extremely happy with my purchase.
I actually like the analogue gauges and that large Nissan/Infiniti central gauge cluster screen.
Funny, the analog gauge cluster is actually my favorite thing about this car. I much, much prefer actual dials instead of a screen. I remember the dials on my e90 3 series, they looked so much better than the digital display BMW offers today, but I guess I'm a minority here.
AlucardBRZ Yea cuz those actual full screen gage clusters won’t age too well. If it starts glitching after a few years you’ll be spending a good couple thousand bucks replacing the entire thing..

I find your review a little harsh..... I've owned a Q50 3.7 since 2014 and had no issues with it. Great ride at cruising speed + quiet ride at high speed and a very good BOSE sound system. Great handling and a tank in snow (AWD)..... All and all, this, for me, was a great purchase...

I have a 2016 3.0T and I think his review is pretty spot on. I love my Q50 as a daily driver, but compared to cars like the Stinger and G70 at the same price point, the Red Sport is completely out classed. The interior is comfortable, but nothing special, infotainment is super laggy, the transmission is unpredictable in sport mode. The motor is incredible though and with the Helmholtz exhaust is one of the best sounding V6s I have heard. Don't regret buying it at all, but will be upgrading once the warranty is up.
We got one in 2014 with everything on it. I completely agree with his review. This navigation debuted in 2006 with the new G35(turned G37 the year after). That’s terrible. The stereo is alright, but the ride is meh and the interior is a huge let down. The self driving tech was awful. They didn’t link the camera and radar, which is just laziness. The G70 destroys this car in terms of refinement, technology, and just everything else. Even the stinger does
Thought Q50 was a great car until I drove others. Q50 had Extremely slow transmission response, horrible gas mileage, and excessive wear in tires, etc. C300 with 70 less hp felt quicker. No wonder why they are giving this out below $300 a month on a lease.

AND there's a coolant leak and a bad rear main seal, the convertible top has 5 to 10 inexplicable little slits in it, and the factory M wheel just cracked catastrophically on a minor pothole, which I've never seen in 4 decades of driving.

Just a while ago I thought "I wish cars had two screens inside, one exclusively devoted to the navigation"...
when Doug then mentions how slow the upper screen's reactions are I think "well, I'd move the input for the navigation to the lower screen then" ... turns out Infiniti did that.
And I always wanted a car with a navigation system that tells me which of the available routes is the most economical!
When Doug talks about the gauge cluster all I can think is "Hurray! It's an oldschool gauge cluster, not one of those silly screens! I don't trust those screens, if the screen fails you are absolutely skrewed....oh, and those details on the edges there, those look really nice." ...then Doug mocks those details.
And the thing about the Red Sport badge... I absolutely HATE it when it is obvious from outside that you bought a special or more expensive model.
I don't buy stuff to show off, if I buy the more expensive option I do that because I am certain it's the right/better choice.
The best thing about it is its looks, though. It's just one of the best looking sedans. Period.

The Q60 Redsport is the coolest Infiniti and another way to tell the Redsport model is by the exhaust tips. And this car uses steer by wire, which is a quirk that wasn't brought up

@@135iN55 The only thing they are good at is building engines (extremely good btw), not cars in general. Their in-car electronics (such as infotainment) have always been a joke and I doubt that will change any time soon.
I bought a used one for $30k with 10k miles on it. It is the perfect car so far. I couldn't find anything better at that price and mileage.
In sport mode, it is a blast to accelerate and shift through the gears with the gigantic paddle shifters, and the suspension becomes nearly unbearable as if you've put lowering springs on your car, which I enjoy. Yet you can switch to Standard and pick your mom or grandma up and they'll see it as the most luxurious car. It's super smooth and quiet.
The tech is great with the adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, plus it doesn't bug you with warnings to keep your hands on the wheel when using it. For me, driving between Detroit and Chicago is so easy now with the assist features, 20 gallon tank, and 30 mpg highway efficiency compared to my previous compact car.
The seats are comfortable and heated, the steering wheel is heated, the moon roof is nice, the seats and steering wheel adjust automatically, and the wipers and mirrors are automatic. An interesting quirk that I like is when you turn on the car, the headlights move back and forth. Oh and it also has a CD player and aux port.
I like that it looks like a normal car and doesn't attract a lot of attention. I took all the badges off mine. People that are slightly interested in cars will know enough to ask, "is that the one with 400 hp? That's more than I got!"

I love my 2019 Q50 (even with the two screens). While the lag can be a bit frustrating - if one manages the accelerator pedal it responds aggressively. My favorite aspect is the 'feel' in the drivers seat - you're sitting in and driving a responsive CAR (versus your living room furniture) with controls and gauges intuitively within reach and view.
This would be such a better car if Infiniti actually put more effort into their R&D and continuous quality improvement. An improved transmission, improved steering system, and LSD would make this a far more rewarding car to drive, and better match its great engine. In the handling department, this thing has a lot of room for growth.

That's because that portion of the car transfers to like usage in cell phones. The only way to gravitate from this feature as important is embed chips in people's brains. Going forward to places and stopping is least important in car functions now.

I have the 3.7L AWD Q50 with a Stillen intake kit and a Ark Performance CBE and i have learned since installing and tuning, that these Infinitis are intended to be mid-tier luxury cars that look sexy and attract attention but are all ultimately begging to become street cars within their lifetime inevitably. The VQ37VHR is really so awesome and I've become convinced after all the extra sound and power unleashed from these two bolt-ons, that when buying these cars you're not supposed to keep them stock. There's an absolutely massive aftermarket for these cars for a reason and if you have a supercharged one of these, forget it, you are one of the most unique vehicles on the road. They spit flames and make a beautiful sound. Always catches eyes and never ceases to scare your passengers. The growl is very deep and masculine, it is always a ton of fun off-ramping onto highways with a car full of people. The engine just simply pulls hard.
Gauge cluster is actually one of the cooler parts of the car. 0-180, 0-9000. The purple color of it outshines BMW's orange by far.
DO NOT underestimate the 14 speaker Bose sound system. I read all about the design collaboration between Infiniti and Bose and that sound system is special. They named it Bose studio on wheels and today that still stands, my sound system tops friends BMWs and Audis i have listened to. I added 2 Focal 12" Subwoofers and extensively sound deadened all four doors. I use the physical auxillary with an equalizer app that overlays my spotify and none of my friends have said they've heard a better system.
Engine, styling, accents, sound system, reliability, simplicity, DIY-eccentric, traditional, analog, less complicated and prone to break like most modernized designs that fail to withstand the test of time... and all the extra fancy tech - ((if you opted for it)).
I think of it like a luxury alternative successor to the 370Z until Nissan unveils the next one.
Buy a pre-owned Q50 with 20-40K miles, put $2-3K into a few bolt-ons and a tune and you already have a loud, fun, fast cool ass car... drop >/= $7-10K on one of the few supercharger kits out there -- and you've got a winner!! Perfect sleeper car too.
The 3.0t version is much faster.
Styling 5/10? This car is the best looking car in its class. Gives Mercedes a run for its money. The curves are wonderful.

It's worth noting that this RS400 appears to be a 2016 or 2017 model. You can tell based on the color of the headliner. The 2018s are all black headliners. My top screen doesnt lag in my 2018.

I had a G35 back in the day before kids...it was so beautiful, quick and fun to drive. Now we have a QX60 and love it...great for the family, comfortable and problem free. It’s just a preference.

I own an 03 g35 and an 04 g35x. Still run like champs, never left me stranded, and I’ve been able to do all my own maintenance. Great cars. Just a tad quirky
I didn’t buy my q50 for the tech. I can and am making it more fun handling wise. It’s very durable, cheap to maintain and the damn seats will fit a very broad shoulderd human. I don’t fit in any Lexus seat, bmw seats are like a park bench, Mercedes just is cramped. Acura is crap

It is important to understand that this 2016 Q50 is nearly identical to a 2019 car which is still the latest model they sell of the Q50.
The 2020 Q50 will debut next month and will FINALLY add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. That is about it.

That’s a 2016 Q50 Red Sport 400. The 2019 model got rid of some of the features you loved like those paddle shifters. The new cars have plastic ones that aren’t mounted on the column but steering wheel now.

That doesn't count for much when the Infiniti is boring to drive compared to it's competitors. I'd rather drive a Mercedes-Benz and pay a little extra, than a drive boring Lexus, Infiniti, or Acura. Plus, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are actual luxury vehicles, not some marketing gimmick made by a car company.
Jordan Daly you clearly never have driven an Infiniti because those are actually really fun to drive especially the the g35 with the HR motor and I rather have a reliable car then to spend “extra “ for something that is going to give you hella problems after 100k miles (BMW)
