The northman did such an amazing job showing Ulfhednar/Berserker The ritual scene is just work of art, its in one long continues shot, when they start their transformation camera slowly moves toward amleth like some entity is crawling toward him and then suddenly he gets possessed by it.that scene uses archeological and Icelandic sagas but also one important source from Byzantine imperator in the book of ceremonies, Varangians did dance ritualt in animal skin, there definitely were varangian berserkers

Another amazing video! A very interesting point was to use the "biting the shield" question to track possible evidence that there were Ulfhednars / Berserkers from the time of the Germanic tribes. Ow... i'm going to steal the "Brohalla Groups" 😂 Mighty hail from your brazilian friends of Germania Institut!
Wanted to say I appreciate it work, first off. Secondly, I know u make the comment about "when we were all one people" often when referring to northern Europeans as a whole. I'm curious about and would love to see a video on what u think about northern Europeans that were there in northern Europe before the steppe herder migration, like those during the Mesolithic. I had my DNA tested, and I'm the I1 Haplogroup, which is typically associated with the Norse as an ethnic group, and as it's the oldest, or one of the oldest, Haplogroup in Europe, it has a lot more leftover Mesolithic admixture. There's another gent who's an academic and a Norwegian and whose channel name is Viking Stories who does fantastic work as well. I would love to see what ur thoughts are on this as a general concept. Thanks and cheers!
@@gcanaday1 Right. So, when u say Pontic steppe people, you're talking about the Indo-Europeans, correct? We are definitely descended from them, but also from other populations that were in Europe before that migration. It's those people I'd like to know his thoughts on, and how they interacted and were integrated into the Indo-European population as a whole.
If anyone is interested in further reading, look up bearskin. It’s a fairytale preserved by the brothers Grimm . It’s clearly a folkloric remnant of a berserker ritual.
Two questions...in Anglo Saxon law outlaws are named "Wolf's Heads" that any man might slay and bring the head to their Earl for reward. How is Ulfhednar different from this? My other question is related to the Berserkers, that I understood to be possessed of the "battle madness" that rendered them both fearless and oblivious to pain and injury. I have experienced this, when a bully assaulted me, years ago and the battle rage took me...he was bigger but I throttled him till they pried me off his bucking torso. He never bothered me again...and, no, I didn't kill him, he did that himself 2 years later...driving drunk. So is the Berserker rage a thing of the past....a "bear spirit" thing...or the AMOK rage that harnesses adrenaline and dopamine to turn little people into supermen as in the Irish tale of Cucuhulain, because it seems to me there is more to this story...
In my research it is a state of mind to understand the primal and instinctual mind. Yes heightened senses, reaction, and even a sense of clarity as well. But also you are dealing with adrenal rush, and at times immediate fatigue, and also drain afterwards. But the instinct, and the perception is beautiful!
I just have to ask this: So, is there were the phrase "to go berserk" comes from? As in, someone just losing it and... going berserk. Thanks for your great, informative videos.
Thanks for this episode - I really enjoyed it. I write books about a bunch of ulfheðnar and I'd be interested in your opinion - I don't want to try to use this as an advert but can send you some copies if you are interested
I wonder if Berserkers maybe just suffered from PTSD due to war. This can make people aggressive and put them in a constant survival mode if not treated properly. Your explanation certainly reminds me of it. Not able to perform in society anymore, not able to emotionally connect and thus they never left the battlefield. I like the shapeshifting comparison here as it seems logical as people come back changed.
More on Paganism. Sherri Michaels book, Sacred Instruction; is a complete system, with all the minutia that explains the reasoning. I can't wait to get a copied. I have a feeling this book will have many anseers.
Yeah that's a really interesting thought. I hope there were like Norse mages that would take on the persona of Ravens or something. Maybe snakes or something if assassins were a thing for the Norse (I'm sure they did use assassins)
@@Talorgen i dont know but i reckon you are right, boars are very powerful creatures so it would make sense for warriors to revere them. Perhaps someones spirit animal had/has something to do with it. I thought a lion would be a good one.
I have a strange question... I have been trying to track my heritage and I am stumped... My father I have traced to Aaron Quick Germany 1721-1725 ( difference in birth date ), Saxon.... However I have also been told that the origin of his family is the Netherlands and the Hwicci tribe from other family members who are in England... So how can I figure out what is truthful? Any suggestions. Also my mother's side is fitzgerel ( changed during immigration to the US. By the immigration department) they were from Ireland and supposedly they were also Saxon .. I am so confused..
Apparently after the success of Braveheart, Mel Gibson decided to do another historical film and for something different he chose Beserkers. But because there's little information and he had a hard time writing a main character as a Beserker that the audience could sympathise with or relate to and other personal problems in his life, the project fell apart.
@@warriorhealth2172 true, however I think that may have led to the idea of filming The Northman. It happens a lot in Hollywood. Did you know Leonardo Di Caprio was going to play the part of the Berserker in Mel Gibson's movie?
What about the mysterious Ethusican culture, they were around Italy before Italy and were way before the Celts, wait are these the same ones who made a sword that only rivaled Damascus steel sword with the name on the sword. I would like something similar to your headband for the change of weather
Could you do a video on wolves? Since Ulfhednar were respected but were considered Wolf like. In your video on the fylgja you said that having a Wolf as your fylgja was generally not a good thing
I'd still contest that. I think the text he refers to is talking about the foxes, not the wolves. As they're the magicians, which is definitely a bad thing to be as a man, unless you're the god Wen of course. As with mortals, only women (or old men, basically, weak people) are morally allowed to practice such things. Having said that. In Ragnarok, 'ulf' is used to refer to the midgard snake for example. And varg (or maybe ulf as well) generally for some monster.
From what ive heard here in sweden from old sagas is that you need to take the animals life yourself to be able to inhabit the spirit of the animal. The place i come from in sweden is considered one of the last places in sweden to be christianised we have this old tale told by christians about "Hårgaberget" a place where the "devil" came and people danced until they died. Visit the place i get the feeling it was used for rituals
@@gcanaday1Not just because the bear is dangerous but also because bear skin contains many parasite eggs that can easily get in your system and stay there for years.
From what ive gathered over the years of researching these warrior cults it seems to suggest that ulfhednar were a more cohesive group formed of around 6 to 12 men where as the berserkers were seen to be either solo or on rare occasions a group of 3 but you could expect berserk to be more aggressive in this manners such as in fighting for loot or just generally being not great team players opting to much rather kill the others and just take the plunder for themselves hence why many community would hold berserkers at arms length and put them further out of the community domains where as ulfhednar were employed even by the jarl as personal body guard due to them being far more loyal when the coin is right and often much more effective on the battlefield as they would move like how a pack would be intended - alpha takes lead and the rest follow suit Many of the varangian guards in the byzantine empire were supposedly affiliated with the same cults and sources say about them doing the ritual dance before battle working themselves into a wild fury but big difference between the varangian and just regular units varangian were much more mature & battle tested showing a far greater control and effectiveness when put to use not just blindly windmilling till they hit something but actually using battle tactics and stedfast with their loyalty to the empire since they were being paid upwards of 40× the regular pay in gold hence why absolutely everyone and their gran wanted to join Most famous was herald hardrada whom gave himself a fake name so he could join as it was looked down upon for royalty to be on the front line but herald didnt give a fuck
Interestingly, the Tribe of Benjamin in Israel might be somewhat related. The symbol was a wolf and were often described as either repugnant "left handed" fighters or as brave and skilled archers.
I first read of the Ulfhednar in 1991 in a book called "Practical Magic in the Northern Tradition" an interesting book with some nice info & a lot of armchair theory unfortunately. But it did help me start treading my own personal Asatru road.
Some may have pretended to have the ability in order to intimidate and manipulate others, but when someone goes berserk for real, it's a truly scary thing. They don't seem to feel pain in a normal way, are incredibly quick with their actions, want to fight, and can lash out irrational. If I should guess about what happens, I would say they are naturally super pumped up on adrenaline and may act violently before they think of the consequences. In my opinion, when Freydis came out of the tent in Vinland, she was likely berserk, and the locals wisely retreated. You really don't want any part of berserkers. You may be able to take them, but it will cost you dearly.
I know what of you speak, I can remember several times in my life when the Battle Rage took me, and bigger men fell, who had wished me ill. I wonder..did I inherit this from my ancestors? I know that I have terrified others before I learned to control the raging...some still fear me, though I bear them no ill will....puzzling indeed.
I find it funny there were cringe pagans even during the times of Viking. Have you seen the movie Golden Compass? I know it's more of a tween movie but the whole storyline revolves around spirit animals that travel outside the physical body of the person but is part of their soul. That animal could be anything.
12:00 I am willing to put money down the Bronze Age standards accommodated the Berzerkers. in short we knew how to act around them and wanted to act that way!
The Northman was a blessing for us Viking nerds

Another amazing video! A very interesting point was to use the "biting the shield" question to track possible evidence that there were Ulfhednars / Berserkers from the time of the Germanic tribes.
Ow... i'm going to steal the "Brohalla Groups" 😂
Mighty hail from your brazilian friends of Germania Institut!
Great video! Thank you!
Not just northern Europeans. He means pontic steppes people. All of Europe descends from them in one way or another.
@@gcanaday1 Right. So, when u say Pontic steppe people, you're talking about the Indo-Europeans, correct? We are definitely descended from them, but also from other populations that were in Europe before that migration. It's those people I'd like to know his thoughts on, and how they interacted and were integrated into the Indo-European population as a whole.
awesome! someone actually explaining this!
Awesome video, thank you !
Love your videos. May sound stupid but they hit me on a spiritual level. They take me back to the thrilling days of yesteryear
so cool 😍 elsker dine videoer 🙏🏻

Nice shirt! Wore the same today. Greetings from Sweden
If anyone is interested in further reading, look up bearskin. It’s a fairytale preserved by the brothers Grimm . It’s clearly a folkloric remnant of a berserker ritual.
Awesome
Thanks for the vid, keep up the good work, and skål : )
THE SOUTHERN CONE IS A COUNTRY
Love your vids man!
Check out Siberian Eleuthero, it regulates your adrenal glands so you dont get adrenal fatigue.
Thank you. Your info shall be put to good use. I am trying to write a Norse epic.
Good stuff . Thank you.

Who knew Stolen Valor existed back then.
Can you do some videos about your workout routines and diet?
Props on the mayhem shirt! 🤘
Can you send me links to the Ulfendnar and Berserkers Saga's.
I would deeply appreciate it love your content.
You find links in the info.
@@JOBT0 ow my bad thanks.👍
I just have to ask this: So, is there were the phrase "to go berserk" comes from? As in, someone just losing it and... going berserk. Thanks for your great, informative videos.
Good video, ty! 👍
Noice video as always love the definition 👌 in them ..hearing holmgang makes sense ...taking liberty with the spelling
Great video.
THE SOUTHERN CONE IS A COUNTRY
When it's cold, and when it's dark.. The freezing moon can obsess you!!
Thanks for this episode - I really enjoyed it. I write books about a bunch of ulfheðnar and I'd be interested in your opinion - I don't want to try to use this as an advert but can send you some copies if you are interested
so about those wolf furs... lol is it a request you can make on your shop orr..?
fantastic info!
Men weren’t as weak as modern men. They could hack it.
Awesome! Thank you💜

Id like to know what it was that caused some cultures to be able to trade with vikings while others were murked by them?
Good video. Thanks
Interesting fact, bears and wolves share a common ancestry splitting 20-30 million yrs ago.
I think Bernard Cornwell mentioned them in his books....but I can't recall..
More on Paganism. Sherri Michaels book,
Sacred Instruction; is a complete system, with all the minutia that explains the reasoning. I can't wait to get a copied.
I have a feeling this book will have many anseers.
I definitely want a wolf skin. Can i email you about it?
This is a very interesting subject.
I wonder if the attributes of animals other than bears and wolves were/are taken on by the wise and cunning...?
Am I remembering right that there was a variation on the them that revered the boar instead?
Yeah that's a really interesting thought. I hope there were like Norse mages that would take on the persona of Ravens or something. Maybe snakes or something if assassins were a thing for the Norse (I'm sure they did use assassins)
@@Talorgen i dont know but i reckon you are right, boars are very powerful creatures so it would make sense for warriors to revere them.
Perhaps someones spirit animal had/has something to do with it.
I thought a lion would be a good one.
Another great video video as always. Facts with good, logical consideration to the spiritual side of things. Thanks mate 🤘🏻 🐺🤘🏻
Love your mayhem shirt 🔥⚔️
Shape shifter.. is another thing I gather from early understandings
where could you get a wolf or bear skin ? i ask it for a friend
:)
Such big, strong beasts....
OH MY!!!❤
My mother was a direct decendent of Haakon one of Harold Fine Hairs 20 sons i have a Wolf Skin but it belonged to Anastasia Romanov
i am interested in some animal skins and skulls if you do them
Apparently after the success of Braveheart, Mel Gibson decided to do another historical film and for something different he chose Beserkers. But because there's little information and he had a hard time writing a main character as a Beserker that the audience could sympathise with or relate to and other personal problems in his life, the project fell apart.
So sad, it would have been amazing.
@@warriorhealth2172 true, however I think that may have led to the idea of filming The Northman. It happens a lot in Hollywood. Did you know Leonardo Di Caprio was going to play the part of the Berserker in Mel Gibson's movie?
Bring unto us a Viking metal video.
What do you say about the theory that these warriors used hallucinogenic mushrooms to achieve this Berserk state?
From what ive heard here in sweden from old sagas is that you need to take the animals life yourself to be able to inhabit the spirit of the animal. The place i come from in sweden is considered one of the last places in sweden to be christianised we have this old tale told by christians about "Hårgaberget" a place where the "devil" came and people danced until they died. Visit the place i get the feeling it was used for rituals
Great video and I hate how expensive bearskins are it's way cheaper to go hunt one and skin and tan it than it is to buy one
Also a ton more dangerous.
@@gcanaday1Not just because the bear is dangerous but also because bear skin contains many parasite eggs that can easily get in your system and stay there for years.
@@gcanaday1 it'll buff
I missed that northman movie. Is it good? I sure hope so. 😊
I would say it's good it's just alot of people don't get it for some odd reason
Don’t go in expecting this big action movie.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It's weird.
coming of age rituals are found in cultures all over the world they just tend to differ a lot
Love the Mayhem shirt BYW!!!
Never heard it called Brohalla, I love that!😅
2:00 The colder it is the more people wearing skins of any kind. Probably spenthe winter sewing and tanning skins.
From what ive gathered over the years of researching these warrior cults it seems to suggest that ulfhednar were a more cohesive group formed of around 6 to 12 men where as the berserkers were seen to be either solo or on rare occasions a group of 3 but you could expect berserk to be more aggressive in this manners such as in fighting for loot or just generally being not great team players opting to much rather kill the others and just take the plunder for themselves hence why many community would hold berserkers at arms length and put them further out of the community domains where as ulfhednar were employed even by the jarl as personal body guard due to them being far more loyal when the coin is right and often much more effective on the battlefield as they would move like how a pack would be intended - alpha takes lead and the rest follow suit
Many of the varangian guards in the byzantine empire were supposedly affiliated with the same cults and sources say about them doing the ritual dance before battle working themselves into a wild fury but big difference between the varangian and just regular units varangian were much more mature & battle tested showing a far greater control and effectiveness when put to use not just blindly windmilling till they hit something but actually using battle tactics and stedfast with their loyalty to the empire since they were being paid upwards of 40× the regular pay in gold hence why absolutely everyone and their gran wanted to join
Most famous was herald hardrada whom gave himself a fake name so he could join as it was looked down upon for royalty to be on the front line but herald didnt give a fuck
Digging the mayhem shirt 🤘
Interestingly, the Tribe of Benjamin in Israel might be somewhat related. The symbol was a wolf and were often described as either repugnant "left handed" fighters or as brave and skilled archers.
Whats that Intro Sound?
So what about Jöfurr?
How are they ethically sourced?
I first read of the Ulfhednar in 1991 in a book called "Practical Magic in the Northern Tradition" an interesting book with some nice info & a lot of armchair theory unfortunately. But it did help me start treading my own personal Asatru road.
awesome Amon Amarth album art \m/
Can you sell to Switzerland please.
may I ask about the boar warriors
Wasn't there a sword-making style called Ulfbert?
My guess is an ulf...whatever probably carried ulf swords?
Very interesting
@@bellakaldera3305 holy fuck thats so cringe to read

I heart about Ulfhhednar in a book, it was a story book so I assumed it was exclusive to that book. It turns out I was incorrect
If anyone's interested
They should look up werewolves of Ossory
Irish version of the Ulfhednar
It's great
Ulfhednar are extremely intelligent in battle and supernatural leaders. Enigmatic.
We need to see MORE Ulfhednar in entertainment
🤘🐺🤘
I find it funny there were cringe pagans even during the times of Viking. Have you seen the movie Golden Compass? I know it's more of a tween movie but the whole storyline revolves around spirit animals that travel outside the physical body of the person but is part of their soul. That animal could be anything.
Hello from France
12:00 I am willing to put money down the Bronze Age standards accommodated the Berzerkers. in short we knew how to act around them and wanted to act that way!
Ulfbert has been found on strongest of viking swords ever discovered .
Whoud this translate to the wolf head one English?
Heidrek Ulfhamr, descendant of Hervor, daughter of Angantyr the Berserker, son of Arngrim the Berserker.
