You know this is a pointless bias review when the reviewer doesn't understand who the intended audience this game is marketed for nor does he read the details of what the game is. The games website site specifically detail it's a third person action shooter. No point of bringing that Rocksteady has been a notoriously a game studio that works on action combat story driven games. This game isn't a combat 3rd person game. It's a third person action shooter. Totally bi-polar opposite of what they are.

All the good live service games like Deep Rock or Warhammer4k: Darktide have 4 unique classes that are not interchangeable on the ability or weapon level. Each class is genuinely unique. Darktide has the Ogryn class, who is tall and tanky but slow. The Psyker class plays nothing like him, which is a ranger magic class. The devs at Rocksteady seriously lack creativity.
see you in 6 months when WB reports that: "due to changing market conditions we have been forced to take the regretful decision of downsizing Rocksteady and will have to layoff 50% of the studio"
Maybe it's because I'm getting old but watching that gameplay footage was just exhausting. How can people look at this visual mess and not feel disoriented after a minute or so? 😵💫
Not really tho.. Since there are actual good games out there on the market... I won't be spending 9.99$ for a bad game with a cash shop and battlepass.. I would not play it if it was free.
How do you think this works? They just get another chance? Clowns these days rip into a studio so hard they close down then act like they have no idea why anyone would close said studio down and cry and wish it was still around
The whole thing is gross. Clearly loot boxes were definitely going to be a thing until the outrage of that hit. The whole game just screams monetization regardless of how much they may have pulled back.

My take on another comment is that the script feels like it was written for the Squad to be facing an "Injustice" style assortment of truly evil heroes. Not a group of previously good, mind controlled heroes. It seems like Rocksteady wanted to have their cake and eat it too. With the edginess of killing the good JL heroes we know and love, while having them be plainly evil enough to root for the Squad against them, minimizing any chance the player might feel bad for having to kill them.
All the bad comic book writing tropes in one package. Such garbage. Hope the animators and 3d modellers find a better studio to work for, because their talented is wasted on incompetent CEO's and writers. I 2 months we will already see headlines "wb games fires 50% of rocksteady staff." get out while you can for greener pastures.
Personally, my speculation is that if you look at when this game was greenlit, it was at a very specific time: a time when WB was hyping up the Suicide Squad and the Justice League as rival teams, when the DCEU, though clearly troubled, was still making motions towards a grand plan, and when Destiny was at the height of its prowess. Nowadays, there isn't a Suicide Squad or Justice League comic on the stands, the DCEU is completely dead and buried (and they'll be very lucky if superhero films as a whole survive the next five years), and live service is one of the most hated terms in the industry. Under those circumstances, a game like this feels tone-deaf: less like a celebration, more a mercenary piss on the grave.
It feels like they made Deadshot's kit first, and then went "Bah it's too hard to make 3 more unique ones based around their actual powers. Let's make them all use guns"

"Kill your darlings" doesn't mean to kill beloved characters. I used to assume that to. Kill your darlings is a term in writing that refers to the concept that a writer must be willing to delete scenes or entire portions of a script or novel that don't serve the story. Greatly written scenes even should be cut out if they don't improve the narrative. That's what it means. Doesn't really apply here
Well. I mean they should have killed their "darlings" in they should have deleted the entire script and started from scratch, so in that way it does apply. :)
@@TheBlueGoldenHawkThe scenes in question can be of any quality. The point is if these scenes don't serve a purpose then don't get attached to them. Keep the story rolling by not wasting the audience's time on whatever garbage or fluff you feel drawn to focus on when your efforts could instead be spent improving your product as a whole; ie. _kill your darlings._ In the case of this SS:KtJL... The company's attention was clearly sucked into the cosmetics, season planning and other marketability tactics rather than cleaning up the UI, making the battles more involved/missions more interesting or, well, anything else their audience might actually _want_ out of a game like this...
It can also mean to not have a fear of killing off a character if it serves the story too. Coming up with contrived ways to keep someone alive because you as a creator like them is only a detriment to your storytelling. But that too doesn’t really fit the use of the phrase here. Just because the Justice League is a beloved group does not mean that they can’t or shouldn’t be killed. Your goal should be to tell a story. If the end goal of that story is to “kill the justice league” your plot needs to service that goal and be impactful.
I want to know who in the hell directed a studio renowned for their visceral, crunchy, satisfying melee combat to make a looter shooter. That person has got to be on drugs.
@@tartatovskylive service part was probably the publisher. I will say it sort of became obvious that the devs wanted to try something different they added a M61 vulcan gun to their stealth/action game.
The saddest part is you can see dim flickers of Rocksteady's genius buried beneath all of the bad/poor decisions made. Rest in Peace Rocksteady, we’ll remember you for the Arkham trilogy, mostly.
Yeah, like say the few good bits of how Batman was handled. Seeing him just glaring at you from afar before vanishing is genuinely fantastic. The only thing that could make it better is if he'd say something eerie over the radio to signify he's watching you then you'd be stuck desperately trying find him.
Seriously! I don't care about all the crybabies who are wetty-upsetty that Batman gets killed and stuff, I'm just shocked no one is talking more about all the VISUAL GARBAGE on the screen at seemingly all times. Really looks like it'd be a dealbreaker for me if there's no way to minimize it. It makes Borderlands look subtle and grounded by comparison.
@@lotus2001 That doesn't make the complaint any less valid. Rocksteady designed this to be the default. That means actual hours and effort went into it, and if you buy this game, you are paying for this UI. Even if you didn't buy the game, you can still complain about it. Just because something is optional, that doesn't excuse it from criticism.
I remember how MESSED UP Harley got to be at the end of Arkham City and especially the "Harley Quinn's Revenge" DLC. She had gone seriously dark and I LOVED it. Then, come Arkham Knight and we're back to generic clown chick. Like WTF?!
That scene where the flash has a brief moment of clarity with wonder woman was actually impactful, why the hell didn’t they do one for every hero? It’s just so strange that only Barry got to have one, you would think batman, THE batman that rocksteady made would have that honor.
They had the perfect set up for it with Harley. She could have said how much it sucked that he wasn't the real batman. And even say something to the effect, is the real batman still in there somewhere because she knows all her words are wasted on the corrupted version. And she can end him with respect and remark on how she is saving the real bats. Or have the real batman come through and ask her to. Something anything is better than what we got.
@@Vonboon11dyOther people have suggested using other villians to take down the league like: Bizzaro for Superman, Reverse Flash for the Flash, Sinestro for Green lantern or have Wonder Woman Play play some kind of part in each boss fight. What's crazy is I have zero interest in this game, but I watched the whole review because I enjoy hearing your breakdowns of what's good and what doesn't work and why it doesn't work.
There are several reviewers that are very good at breaking down the game design in a way that is easy to understanding and genuinely interesting, SkillUp is one of the best at this. I always watch their stuff (Ralph and Austin are both good at this, so I'm including them both) when I'm curious about game design, even if I'm not interested in the game itself.
Jedi survivor he used it. Redfall was called an absolute catastrophe. Biomutant was a "definitely do not". Gollum was "worse than the lowest expectations". My takeaway is that Skillup just likes mixing things up with the titles.
As a lifelong, DC superhero fan it really makes me sad that this game is going down the road that it is. I don’t understand the obsession with making bad guys good and good guys bad. I think people would fall head over heels for a well-made superman game, where he’s actually the good guy for the first time in a decade.
I mean Arkham Harley lecturing Batman on moralty? Arham Harley is a very evil version of teh character, she killed kids canonically, helped Joker torture Jason, and killed thousands for fun. The writers brushed all of this off like nothing.
It's only a demo really, but highly recommend you check out Undefeated. Very cool proof-of-concept. I also really like how your "health" is the city since you're sposed to be...Well, basically Superman
We talk a lot about "a good idea executed badly" and "a bad idea executed badly", but it seems like this is an example of a bad idea executed by talented people who can't overcome its badness. Or, perhaps more accurately, two decent but incompatible ideas (the story and the gameplay systems) running into each other.

How hard does superman have to try to lose against this line up of character? How hard is Flash holding back that he can't just run in a straight line and pull Harley's head off. Like this lineup to fight the justice league just makes no sense. Also how can you make a "justice league" and not have Aquaman and Martian Manhunter? Like every single decision is terrible, it's actually kind of impressive.

I am baffled they did not follow more of Borderlands homework. Sure, make em all use guns as a base but actually give them a character kit that feels unique.

Captain boomerang pissing on Flash's corpse is extra rude considering that he and The other Rogues have a level of respect for the Flash as a hero, they don't like him for sure, but he makes them recognize at every turn that what they're doing is wrong by just bothering to have a chat with them and playing along with their schemes. Flash was one of the only few that didn't just resort to putting them in prison and hoping the justice system rehabilitated the villains, he did take matters into his own hands to make them productive members of society.
Yeah, this is not the comics Suicide Squad Captain Boomerang in the slightest. This is the movie version, and not even the good movie too, he's from the first one.
One of my favorite scenes from the Justice League animated series was when the flash sits down and just talks to the trickster eventually convincing him to get back on his meds and seek help. This is character assassination something DC loves to do to the flash now for some reason.
@@iRadinVerse Mad thing is, I'd argue from watching the cutscenes on youtube is that of the five Justice League members featured, arguably the Flash gets the best treatment. He's the only one who gets to snap out of Brainiac's mind control, and manages in a single line to sell just how bad this has gone. Yes, even with the at least attempted pissing on his corpse I still think he comes off the best and yes I know that's mad. Green Lantern meanwhile gets to be a very on the nose ACAB thin green line parody and it's just really unpleasant to see him depicted in such a fashion. Batman has been well discussed and is deeply sad given the three games people had to get attached to that version of the character. Wonder Woman gets talked down to by the fricking Suicide Squad as she gives up the moral highground to them which is pretty yikes. Superman gets to be a quickly forgotten corpse.
@@iRadinVerse The DC Animated Series is still the gold standard for depicting characters from the source material into other media. With shoutouts to the Batman 2004 show and The Brave And The Bold.
In my opinion, the issue with Kill the Justice League's tone and difficulty in how "evil" the heroes are is something the entire Suicide Squad brand has been dealing with for a while because of what I would call the Harly Quinnification of the Suicide Squad and their brand. Because right now the push with both of the Suicide Squad movies, even the second one, is a lot more of a "self aware anti-hero vibe" and much more comedy-focused in a way they didn't always used to be, in addition to frequently putting them in high powered situations they're less suited for. It's one reason why guys like Captain Boomerang and Deadshot work well with the squad, being more down to Earth villains: Captain Boomerang's kind of just a slimeball who wants to get paid, Deadshot is an assassin-for-hire with a kid, you get the idea. They aren't BIG villains in the series (like Harley is / has become), because that doesn't really make sense or fit the entire team's premise. In my opinion, Task Force X from Justice League Unlimited is a strong example of how the Suicide Squad should operate, and you can see the difference. In that show, it is more about infiltration and the fact they have to be smart. To fight moreso against heroes of their own level, guys like Vigilante or Shining Knight, and characters like Green Lantern or Martian Manhunter are treated as practically loss conditions. Kill the Justice League will always have a tonal problem on the fighting aspect if it makes them straightforward in killing them, but similarly the tone around it is very different, and much less irreverent. If we're in a situation where Boomerang's gonna piss on the Flash and Harley makes light of the situation, then where's the tension? When Martian Manhunter appears in that episode, it is practically a horror episode: Descending from the sky menacingly, phasing through characters and their blows to take them out of action, only being stopped by a superpowered object they acquired in the stealth part + a threat on innocent civilians. And even that is very close. The point I'm making: They need to either be helping someone else kill the Justice League by providing support, like increasing the role of Wonder Woman for example, or to rethink the game entirely. In my opinion, it needs to be something more like a stealth action or assassination game, more Metal Gear Solid or Hitman than Gotham Knights. Going through levels avoiding Brainiac's gaze or Superman's patrol, lest he descend on you and essentially be a game over, until you can find something to deal with them. Maybe a short circuit feedback through Brainiac, an ancient artifiact like the Annihilator, getting a weakness to bring them down to their level. Maybe using other heroes to help out the Suicide Squad because why wouldn't someone like, I dunno, Captain Atom or Supergirl come in and help? Instead, it is an irreverent game with anti-heroes who only bring out the "anti" for shock value moments rather than more genuine acts of villainy, plus just the fact it has to twist a lot of stuff to get the premise and moments in the game to work (See: Green Lantern). It's all about trying to beat an idea into existence when the premise was faulty to begin with I feel.
Task Force X is basically the gold standard for Suicide Squad content. But Warner Bros. has no interest in making it that. They need the squad to be their Guardians of the Galaxy (a band of quirky misfits who never do anything seriously evil), and they need Harley Quinn to be DC's Deadpool (doesn't work because Deadpool is actually funny in his irreverence instead of just obnoxious and zany). Harley Quinn's addition to the suicide squad is where things all went to shit. She just doesn't work outside of interactions with Joker and Batman. She wasn't made to. She's Joker's sidekick, and she only functions in small doses as such. You make her a leading lady or add her to a team of people with actual superpowers or skills and it's like... "why is she even here...? Were they really so desperate for a female inclusion? Why not use Killer Frost or Jinx or someone more suitable?" WB's problem is they're chasers. They chase the next big thing, but they're too slow to actually get there when it matters.
You're right, characters like Captain Boomerang or Deadshot work better for infiltration missions and if the Suicide Squad is going to fight the Justice League, they should have a lineup designed specifically to counteract each member of the League. To defeat Superman, use Bizarro. To defeat Flash, use Reverse Flash to defeat Green Lantern, use Sinister Exsetera. Well, the fact that they use those who appeared in the game feels strange because I mean seriously, this is the best that Waler, having access to all the DC villains, could achieve because by using them, what exactly prevents Superman from burning them in the sun and automatically winning .
good analysis here. Your premise reminds me of "The Boys" tv show where all the supers are ridiculously OP. The protags of that show have to be way smarter because if they faced off directly they'd get evaporated.
you must've read my mind lol. I was thinking the same thing - especially about Wonder Woman. Way back when they first showed her in a cutscene, my immediate thought was "oh, so must be how the SS "kills the league"... like Wonder Woman must play are part in the boss fights. So basically, just like you suggested, the SS was there for support and maybe delivers the final blow to each one. But... nope. Everyone is just a big old bullet sponge. Wonder Woman doesn't factor into any boss fight at all. So many bad decisions made with this game
@@No-soy-un-bizcocho That a good idea to use other villains that match up to the League to take them out. They could've still used these 4 in the SS but had them doing support things in the boss fight instead of them just "shooting the JL member" to beat them.

People keep pointing this out, but Rocksteady’s founders didn’t leave until October 2022, near what was supposed to be the end of Suicide Squad’s development. I personally think this story would've been more compelling if it were a Teen Titans/Young Justice game instead of the Suicide Squad. Having to be their sidekicks/the people closest to them and have to take them down could make for great deep emotional storytelling.
Well they did kind of try that idea with Gotham Knights and that didn't work out too well, this should've been Batman- Save the Justice League. Hear me out Bruce goes into hiding after the events of Arkham Knight and when Brainiac brainwashes the Justice League then the Batman comes back from retirement.
@ardent835 even that would've worked, yeah. Had Kevin and everything. I wouldn't compare Gotham Knights to the Teen Titans idea though only because in GK bats was dead and they just had to take care of Gotham, whereas with the Titans, they'd just be replacing SS to take down their mentors. Either way, your idea would've worked just as well. Especially because they already had the lineage of making Bats centric games. A Babel situation would've been the icing.
@banestryfe Well at the end of Gotham Knight you have to fight a resurrected Batman so the sidekicks are basically going against their mentor but yeah I would've taken a Teen Titans or a straight up Justice League game over any of those.
This is why companies never try anything different. They have to play it safe because y’all like the same stories over and over. You quite literally just said “this game would be better if you just played the good guys and took down other good guys”. This is why gaming is boring now..
Man, the disconnect between the decision makers in entertainment and the consumers has NEVER been this large before, which is ironic because we live in a world where communication has never been easier. How much money do these big studios need to lose in order for them to bridge that gap and finally start making things that people actually want to spend time with?
But what if these decision makers are not the kind of people that can genuinely see past themselves and their bank accounts? We are talking about analytical minds who deem themselves creative geniuses. Quick-witted, but unwise people. It is time to recognize the tell-tale signs of bad management.
What bothers me more is the fact there are still people that defend this game and saying "the hate for this game came from the people that haven't play the game"
I don't need to play trash like Ride to Hell: Retribution, Fallout 76, Anthem, Avengers, etc. to criticize it. Thats the thing, it did die but Rocksteady decided to dig it up, whack some DC wallpaper about the place and release it. I think Rocksteady had pumped so much money into this that it HAD to be released despite knowing it was going to fail. Nine years for this is an absolute tragedy.

I can play flashy games, Cyberpunk has lots of neon, and the combat can go crazy. DOOM games also are extremely intense. Yet watching Suicide Squad gameplay is the first time I almost threw up by a video game. And actually lots of AAA games choose this route of putting crazy amounts of particle effects all over the place and you can't see anything. Forspoken comes to my mind from last year, same ugly stuff. The rest of Suicide Squad looks very average visually for me, except some cut scenes.
Difference is doom is very intentional with its colour use. Green=armor, blue+health, red=ammo you can read the scene and enemies super fast from a glance. That's what this game and games like overwatch final to do, because they don't consider the player experince and gameplay when they add more clutter
@ It's all about design and how well it blends together. Good game-designers will make sure it's readable. But Rocksteady's people don't seem cut out to make this kind of thing and it just became a mess. - There's also things like trends, with how you have the points pop up in shooters ever since like "Modern Warfare" (the original) and in recent years all the brightly colored interfaces and having stats and a character posing next to it. - It's like they looked at other games, then threw everything at theirs. - I'm sure Zoomers are perfectly comfortable with it, but I get a headache within a few seconds, and I'm a Metalhead.
To be honest it looks awful in combat, an absolute headache inducing train wreck

@@michaelmonstar4276talking about being metalhead, Metal: Hellsinger is also an amazing, chaotic game that I had absolutely no issue with. Yeah, readability is important, UI design is important (keep it simple, give just enough info and don't bloat the screen with it), and make the world and characters easy to distinguishable (fast paced games definitely benefits from easy to see enemies). Also particle effects in that amount is totally unnecessary and ruins readability. Being flashy, colorful, make everything look like freakin' fireworks won't make the game better or visually more appealing but it'll make it look more crowded and confusing. That and motion blur effect too.

I waited over a year for Avengers to go on sale for like, 10 bucks and basically come with all cosmetics and characters unlocked for free. There's enough titles out there for me to play and wait for this title to go on a deep, deep sale with the same features for free in a year or two. And if it never does? There's no fomo for a paltry 9 hour campaign. I already think I've seen the highlights of what this game has to offer narrative wise in the tiktoks that have come out for it.
Which is crazy, because "give players free premium currency" is actually a legitimate tactic to get people to spend money. Once they get used to spending the premium currency, it's easier to justify buying some more. There's real data to this, but anecdotally, many friends of mine played league of legends for years without spending a dime until they introduced the free skins system. Once they had some skins, they were happy to spend money to get more.

This commentary slightly misunderstood the Batman backlash. It’s not that Batman is a sacred cow or even about the Kevin Conroy passing. It’s the perfect storm of this being “Arkham Batman”, Kevin passing, him getting killed by a character whom he literally swatted away in previous titles, the way this game absolutely destroys the ending and canon of the Arkham series. There’s just so much more I could write here but I think everyone gets the point. This is honestly one of the most depressing gaming experiences I’ve personally ever had
Exactly. Had this not been the Arkhamverse, people would have accepted it better. But this is a such a terrible and disrespectful ending to a character you played as in four games.
But its not the ending, there are 4 season announced with 2 story episodes each, the story we have so far is an unfinished story, like cmon how many stories of heroes dying and coming back have we seen Everyone is ignoring that we literally played the intro to the story.

Rocksteady should have been the ones to make Gotham Knights. A co-op game where we play as members of the Bat Family post Arkham Knight would have been a guaranteed success and a great continuation to the Arkhamverse.
Man borderlands 2 was really the peak of looter shooter games. Characters that had unique abilities, with a main villain who is honestly still one of the best in the industry. Guns with variations that made them feel different, different elemental values to the guns that were affective against different enemy types. Different factions like the psycho’s, Hyperion and the wildlife. The world which felt so vast and diverse. It was really such a good game
Warframe is so far the only other looter shooter to do it right. Good free storyline, fun gameplay with good melee and gunplay, completely free updates that could easily be paid DLCs.
How is there a "next scene" after killing SUPERMAN? Where could the story possibly go from there? I mean, yeah, killing brainiac, but who cares about that chump when you've just killed SUPERMAN? Do Rocksteady even know who these characters are?
Rocksteady hired a consulting firm that advocates woke ideology and writing, Superman is a strong White male with very little flaws, this is the no.1 enemy of the woke...
I actually didn’t even know the justice league existed in the Arkham universe. To think about all the BS that happened with none of them stepping in to help out Batman, is kind of mind mowing. Like at some point it should’ve become national news what was going on and someone should’ve dropped by to help.
I wondered this since reading the full title of this game. I assume this isn't canon? so where does this game go? you kill all of the "strongest" superheroes in the universe and then you are done? At least make it an attempt to kill these guys, not so finite that you run out of anything to do.
You mean those -hostage- videos of Rocksteady staff -reading their ransom & propaganda scripts at gunpoint- sharing their *_totally genuine_* enthusiasm ?
Oh boy, now we get onto my favorite part: The Executive Developer/Publisher "We're sorry the game was not where we wanted to be and we let you down." Letter probably crafted in some part by AI. It's that promise of making the game better and then just sundowning it as fast as possible that really gets me excited!
It really feels like Rocksteady had a concept of a looter shooter with high jump traversal and a Suicide Squad license to make a game of and they just mashed those two together without thought. You could replace these characters with literally anything and I don't think anyone would bat an eye.

The part that makes Batman's death bad is that supposedly up to this point Batman MIGHT have already been dead because it is canonically the same one from the Arkham series...if his death in Arkham Knight was how it happened okay...but the writers revived him explaining away his death as a "no he faked it and joined the Justice League" and then they killed him in the worst way possible for shock value...
He did mention shock value in the review. I think when we complained about this particular narrative decision the most (for obvious reasons), the studio very much latched onto it and tried to make it seem like we're just butthurt fans. I like how it was phrased in this video because it doesn't allow them the luxury of trying to steer the conversation in that direction. "You don't get to tell us how Kevin felt!", sure, we don't, but we are allowed to say how WE FELT, right? We felt that it was a cheap shot (No pun intended).
I still feel like ghost of tsushima did endgame co-op the best out of any game we've gotten since borderlands 2. The raids are amazing and more creative than anything suicides squad or borderlands 3 has done, by a landslide (including needed teamwork to make it work). It has a brilliant gear system and balanced grinding system for the gear. The best incentive ever to play other classes (I.E. if you want to use a endgame bomb pouch on the assassin class, you need to get that item on the Robin first... then roll a secondary stat that allows it to be used on a assassin class.), while not making it super grindy by allowing you to level ANY weapon from any class up to your highest rank on your main character's gear score. And it was a add-on...
I recently started a new save of Arkham Asylum and I cannot believe how well it holds up in 2024. It is legitimately saddening to see that this is their follow up to such a brilliant trilogy.
A great suicide squad game would be a perm death rogue like, with a huge list of villains that once all used up you gotta start again but stats stay for each individual character per run. When no one seemingly dies makes the suicide squad element pointless.
This was my thought exactly. Have it play like ror2 or something and I'd have a squad of 4, which you can get more villains to choose from later, and when your whole squad dies your run ends. Make the Justice League super hard and fun but if you get a really good run you might have a chance. It can still be story based, look at Hades or probably a better example would be like children of morta. Make all the items based of the WIDE dc universe and let's say superman can only be beaten by kryptonite damage on top of being strong so you need kryptonite items and suck, lex Luther has a shop to sell kryptonite items and if you beat the game or do a certain quest then lex is a playable character. Hell if they really want the guns they could've made it more like borderlands, or enter the gungeon if we want a shooter rogue like.
Yeah this definitely would’ve worked a lot better, or if they were gonna do it like this, they could’ve made the skill tree’s actually worth leveling and instead of Wonder Woman be the sole survivor, batman would’ve made 100x more sense. I can go on about how this game could’ve been amazing lol
Do we want to talk about the fact that the boss battles are nonsense? How do you kill the flash? With the time thingy? How? Are your reflexes faster then the flash itself? And why doesn't he just crush them at light speed instead of playing with them, just like superman? Nonsense
@@brianlozano3576 looter shooter skill tree baby.. the hate is only from upset fans.. just play play and play.... modern gaming the future of gaming oh yeahh
That was a nuanced thought at the beginning of the video. Rocksteady weren't just phoning this game in; they went in with some good ideas. Unfortunately, those ideas were drowned out by horrible ideas they couldn't just fix like that. The backlash from the beginning, where it was revealed this was a live-service game, was the first example. They went quiet to try and salvage things, but the problem is that the issue people had was the core of the game. The live-service model couldn't be replaced without having to scrap the whole thing and start over. Then there was the decision to have all the characters use guns instead of abilities and weapons suited to their characters. Again, they would have to rework the game to fix this problem. The one problem people have that they absolutely could've fixed was having this be a follow-up to Arkham Knight. That's the biggest reason people are so mad about Batman's death. This is the same Batman we played as for four games; a complete badass we made. Having Suicide Squad be in its own universe, with its own Batman and Justice League, would've made this less painful. With making the Justice League evil, what they could've done instead was have the brainwashing convince them that Brainiac is the good guy, and everyone else has been infected by a hate plague of some kind. They're still fundamentally the same characters, but now they're fighting for justice for Brainiac. Sort of how like DCAU Superman was brainwashed into fighting for Darkseid because he was convinced Darkseid raised him. Any evil deeds they do would be motivated by desperation, and we see them starting to break as the brainwashing convinces them they NEED to do these things. And then it could be that they do something so against their morals that the brainwashing starts breaking down, making them less effective. Also, the point about how Suicide Squad's endgame is terrible, and people saying it's alright considering other games had terrible endgames. It makes me think about all the advances Destiny 1 made through its expansions, until you had a pretty great game by the end, and when Destiny 2 came out they had gotten rid of so much of these changes. Destiny 2 may have been better than Destiny 1 when they both started, but why did we need to spend time waiting for it to get back to the Taken King or Rise of the Machines level of quality? I don't want a better game in 5 years time; I want it on launch.
If nothing else, with this game's inevitable failure, hopefully more people will give it a go since it got so overlooked. I probably should comp myself. Speaking of which I think I'll go check out Skillup's review of it if he's got one.
I would love it if a game reviewer talked about how much value the "Gliding" mechanic in Arkham series games adds to that game. In the Arkham games, as you "Glide" above the city as Batman, the action of the game slows down and you focus on the city. You examine the city streets and listen to your enemies. As you glide, you choose your next move. But in the Suicide Squad game (the same was largely true for Gotham Knights), since moving from one place to another is in the form of instantaneous teleportation, jumping and swinging, we cannot examine the city and the enemies, we feel like we are jumping around in an amusement park without a plan. I wish the mechanics of moving from place to place in Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad had creative ideas that gave the opportunity to study the city from the sky for a while. It's a difference that you don't talk about much, but I think it's a very important difference and they couldn't notice it in both games.
>squad defeats a brainwashed wonderwoman, obtaining her laso which helps nulify the effects of brainwash, they face batman and after a long hard fight manage to get the laso around him, at which point he gives location of Batcave which has his plans of how to defeat each member of the justice league (from the justice league series), squad goes locates plans and has missions gathering the needed materials and miscellaneous for said plans, fights happen etcetc, idk I feel like my idea I came up with in 30 seconds is better than this story they had years for no?
You see that actually works. Or have it were Batman didn't get infected and helps the squad save the league. Possibly even have a heroic death at the end saving his friends. But what do we know.
To be fair, that also has major issues since Batman's plans to counter the different members of the justice league were all poorly written and are only slightly more believable than just shooting them. Such as shooting the Flash with a vibrating bullet in a hallway working under the assumption he'll vibrate through it and thus get shot, instead of just dodging like he almost always prefers to do... or somehow brainwashing Green Lantern through whispering in his ear at night to get him to let you steal his ring... They're all this stupid, i get what you're going for, and tbf you only spent 30 seconds on the idea, but the writers would still need to think up some half-decent plans since the ones from canon were god awful.
Why didn't they do Zelda dungeon levels with interesting puzzle mechanics, with puzzles requiring each squad members specific abilities, in between the action of course.. Where the heroes are looking for a key item they need to take down one of the big guys. Like Kryptonite at the end of a dungeon. That Dungeon having a lesser hero as a boss. Defeating the lesser hero doesn't kill them, but frees them of Brainiac's mind control. Or something like that. And some people defend the guns on all heroes thing.. Nah they totally could have had class specific weapon drops. Boomerangs, big melee weapons for Shark, grenades and gadgets and hammers/mallets for Harley...
That's due to Paul Dini, a well-established Batman writer, who was the writer for Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. For Arkham Knight, Rocksteady wanted to stick to in-house talent.
Yeah that was baffling. "One of the things I respect is the ambition and originality...There has never been a gameplay model like this one." Literally nothing is new about this: Squad-based, loot based GAAS Superhero IP Crackdown gameplay Quippy dialogue Heck. Even "super heroes turn evil." Is not a unique idea at all. It's not unique to DC and its not unique to current media landscape. Like you have both The Boys and Invincible (plus Irredeemable) where the whole concept is "what if Superman was evil."

I think that the most frustrating thing about this game is how much promise is inherent in the premise of "killing the Justice League". It is absolutely mind blowing that Rocksteady started with this interesting concept, and then proceeded to do NOTHING with it except offer cheap shocks and underwhelming narrative conclusions. It's doubly frustrating when I see people online complaining about the way the deaths of the Flash or Batman are handled, and then a swarm of cheerleaders flock to the comments to offer the ever unhelpful "iTs CaLlEd KiLl ThE jUsTiCe LeAgUe WhAt DiD yOu ExPeCt???".
I think you're spot-on with this. To me, it also feels like the game has an identity crisis when it comes to the tone.
Having this take place in the Injustice universe would’ve been actually interesting, and a much better choice.
Would've worked much better if Braniac had developed a dimensional key and swapped the JLA with the Crime Syndicate. Those guys are evil.

Doesn't really apply here
*Goodly written
_kill your darlings._
In the case of this SS:KtJL... If the end goal of that story is to “kill the justice league” your plot needs to service that goal and be impactful.

the visual clutter is hurting my brain holy moly
Why not use Killer Frost or Jinx or someone more suitable?"
WB's problem is they're chasers.
Note to everyone: All the people who worked on the Arkham games left and founded Hundred Star Games while this was in development. Thats why it feels so different.

Yes but they laid the groundwork for this game before they took off
People keep pointing this out, but Rocksteady’s founders didn’t leave until October 2022, near what was supposed to be the end of Suicide Squad’s development. Remastering how Batman die
Probably just sat, staring at their monitors, utterly dejected and depressed.
I personally think this story would've been more compelling if it were a Teen Titans/Young Justice game instead of the Suicide Squad. Having to be their sidekicks/the people closest to them and have to take them down could make for great deep emotional storytelling.
Seriously, even in that Batman monologue talking about how Barbara, Tim, and Jason all had to team up. It’s all right there yet pointless in this game
When the WEF gets overthrown and when ESG scores and diversity-forcing companies like Blackrock, Vanguard and Sweet Baby Inc go bankrupt
But what if these decision makers are not the kind of people that can genuinely see past themselves and their bank accounts? We are talking about analytical minds who deem themselves creative geniuses. Quick-witted, but unwise people. It is time to recognize the tell-tale signs of bad management.

As gf reviews stated, “Diarrhea Christmas lights” the screen is wayyyyy too busy. My eyes just can’t do it comfortably
Green=armor, blue+health, red=ammo
you can read the scene and enemies super fast from a glance.

There's no fomo for a paltry 9 hour campaign. I already think I've seen the highlights of what this game has to offer narrative wise in the tiktoks that have come out for it.
I used to work in a game company years ago and gave the idea to "gift a skin" to improve increase player base, "no no we can't give money to users"

I wondered this since reading the full title of this game. I assume this isn't canon? so where does this game go? you kill all of the "strongest" superheroes in the universe and then you are done? At least make it an attempt to kill these guys, not so finite that you run out of anything to do.
Those developer videos of rocksteady trying to hype this game are still one of the most saddest things I've seen.
You mean those -hostage- videos of Rocksteady staff -reading their ransom & propaganda scripts at gunpoint- sharing their *_totally genuine_* enthusiasm ?
Agreed!
"The Bane gun goes boom boom boom!"
You know what I would like to have more then a Bane gun?!
BANE!😡
Oh boy, now we get onto my favorite part: The Executive Developer/Publisher "We're sorry the game was not where we wanted to be and we let you down." Letter probably crafted in some part by AI. It's that promise of making the game better and then just sundowning it as fast as possible that really gets me excited!
It really feels like Rocksteady had a concept of a looter shooter with high jump traversal and a Suicide Squad license to make a game of and they just mashed those two together without thought. You could replace these characters with literally anything and I don't think anyone would bat an eye.
Playing as some generic solders and no Justice League killing would make this game way better!😡
We found the it bois, the worst take yet on this game. How is it a game can suck so bad, yet nobody understands why it sucks, even after watching an extremely good opinion of why it sucks. You still come here and post nonsense.
That's another mass layoff
@@_Cetarial very gross and ghoulish to enjoy small devs being punished for higher-ups bad decisions. The people responsible for this game's failure will not face any consequences, while artists just hoping to feed their familes will lose their livelihood. Extremely bad take.

Nothing gives me more joy than seeing these live service games continue to release, fail and be forgotten.
It was heavily implied he faked his death in Arkham knight
I'm just considering this game to be non canon lmfao
Ngl what was the point of faking his death if he was just going back in to the public eye to join the JL. Makes no sense
@@alonzoruiz3591 I think it was confirmed by rocksteady that he faked their death.
The most self-aware thing they could do right now would be to tattoo the word "Damaged" on the product.
That was what was weird to me, too. A Suicide Squad game with only four members doesn't have room to be disposing of the cast.
1:01 "there has never been a gameplay model like this one" it is legit DC Saints Row 4
Agents of Mayhem is a more apt comparison, IMO.
hey, don't badmouth Saints Row 4 gameplay, that game's gameplay is baller af, Agents of Mayhem is closer yes
Crackdown wants a word.
Except Saints Row 4 was fun
Don't you mean Hipsters Row 2022.
Do we want to talk about the fact that the boss battles are nonsense? How do you kill the flash? With the time thingy? How? Are your reflexes faster then the flash itself? And why doesn't he just crush them at light speed instead of playing with them, just like superman?
Nonsense
Stop asking completely logical questions like. Just play are game. But if u really want to find out. Give us $40 for the season pass.
Imagine how cool an actual Arkham style game about the Suicide Squad with like unique combat for each of them would have been.
Imagine a Batman game, where he has to defeat and capture the rest of the Justice league without killing them.
Instead we got some really effing weird game with everyone being able to jump for miles for some reason. Gameplay clashes with the IP like mad here.
I'd rather play as the Justice League first.
They should've made it like guardians of the galaxy
Games like this really make me appreciate Eidos Montreals Guardians of the Galaxy game way more man
I recommend that game every chance I get.
And unfortunately that game didn't sell very well, which only leads to more publishers pushing for games like Suicide Squad.
Game is top tier. Crazy it didn’t get a sequel to flesh out the combat more.
Why didn't they do that? Because they're hacks.
Its crazy how it's same studio who handled joker's death so well with emotional moment but batman's was turned into comedy
Good point
It isn't technically the same studio, they moved out to form a new one.
That's due to Paul Dini, a well-established Batman writer, who was the writer for Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.
For Arkham Knight, Rocksteady wanted to stick to in-house talent.
How is it comedy?
It’s the same studio in literally name only. The people who did Asylum and City definitely didn’t work on THIS game.
"it's different from crackdown" and then SkillUp literally describes crackdown when describing SS and calls it "new". None of SS is new... At all...

Heck. Even "super heroes turn evil." Is not a unique idea at all. It's not unique to DC and its not unique to current media landscape. Like you have both The Boys and Invincible (plus Irredeemable) where the whole concept is "what if Superman was evil."

At least Avengers didn't all play the same. Don't tell me it can't be done
Like, yes I can read the title. My problem is not with the premise. My problem is that they don't do anything interesting with it.
00:58 "...in an era where superhero stories often feel a little played out across most forms of mass media, the ambition to tell a stark story is commendable"
Huh?? Haven't we had enough "stark" superhero stories? I feel like we've had so many iterations of "your favourite superhero is a bad guy now" over the past few years. This idea in particular feels especially played out.
Exactly, this new trend of pushing "actually heroes are bad & the problem while the villains are misunderstood and should be the focus" is stupid. Enough is enough, we want good heroes and stories about them.
@@EchoDoctrine Agreed! At this point, Superman (or similar characters) being a good guy feels subversive. Especially after BvS, Injustice, The Boys, etc.
For sure. I really felt that with the Netflix Marvel shows. Every single one of the main characters were dealing with some kind of trauma that had messed up them up mentally. It has become so prevalent that it's become boring to have these types of characters all over the place.
This game is just "The Boys" with DC characters.
Subvert everything until there's nothing but cynicism and contempt in your heart
Well you wrong about 1 thing. The idea that I was Waiting for this game.
As soon as I heard about it, my response was "really? Your doing THIS instead of an Actual Justice League Video Game? Pass.". Lo-and behold, it was even Worse than I could imagine.
Same man, the second this was revealed at DC Fandome I was so let down.
The Arkhamverse already showed that the whole batfamily is alive and well... So instead of picking highly trained super heroes that have emotional bondings with the justice league they choose to send in Joker's side kick, false advertised shooting guy, Shark person and boomerang dude. Sad.. this will sink Rocksteady completely. Then again.. Rocksteady really isn't Rocksteady these days.
