Class based vs hero shooters: What's the difference?

  • On this episode of "Random idiot rambles about stuff," I go out there and explain the differences between two arbitrary subgenres because I got tired of people calling TF2 a hero shooter. Also, the BGM is Simple Secrets if anyone asks.

    i'm getting tired of games churning out new characters for the sake of "relatable personality and lore." i have yet to see a hero shooter with a single compelling character when that is the whole appeal of that system. they all just end up with too many characters to juggle in terms of meaningful development

    I don't know that much about shooter games a whole, and I honestly thought that the only reason TF2 wouldn't be considered a hero shooter is because of the mercs' morals--

    Maybe when TF2 first came out it was simply a class-based shooter, but it's pretty unambiguously the game that spawned the hero shooters of today, and started to lean closer into what those are as it got updated.
    The fact that the Mercs are unique individuals was apparent before the game even came out just from the "Meet the team" videos, they have significant unique cosmetics tying into their confounding lore, newer items made them just stop being the class they're alleged to be (explain to me how demo-knight has anything to do with being a Demolitions guy, or how it's even useful for taking out structures, that one's really old now too, instead its original items are informed by the Demoman's character and lore), a bunch of them started gaining random super powers and special abilities (sometimes through taunts, which are unique to the different characters). Like, it's the mildest case perhaps, but I'd still say TF2 is the game where class-shooters transitioned into gero shooters, even if truer class-based shooters persisted (see: anything made by Splash Damage). That is of course, if you actually want to make the case that "class-based" and "hero" shooters are mutually exclusive categories at all.
    The definition you gave of hero shooter fails instantly given the existence of non-team-based gamemodes (being front and center in the case of Quake champions), and from Rainbow Six Siege not really using cooldowns for unique abilities. The other stuff you mentioned is just normal stuff for teamwork oriented games with defined roles for team members.
    Class-based shooters also don't have to be team-based, even if they usually are and it's how they're usually played. There are also class-based shooters where weapons don't separate the classes, like Brink, a game where they also aren't tied together by uniform (but it's visually easy to tell who's on which team). The characters are entirely player created, but it's class-based.
    Battlefield definitely wasn't the game that defined the class-based shooter, you don't even have to look at a separate series than what you're playing, Team Fortress Classic and Quake Team Fortress are both older than it. Battlefield also used to have pretty rigid kits, and hero shooters that aren't Overwatch tend not to.
    Class-based and hero-based aren't the same thing yes. They also overlap a lot, being one doesn't make it not be the other.

    This video is basicly saying tf2 and overwatch are very different games just that the tf2 classes are war criminals and everyother character is a good person or isnt war criminal beacuse scout tf2 is not a hero

    A bunch of your points are not relevant the only true relevant point is how characters are. scale is irrelevant, what if overwatch had like 25 players nothing else changed would it still be a hero shooter, and deep rock galactic is very team based. What makes a hero shooter a hero shooter is if its a shooter and theres a bloated roster of characters and the characters being a sub class with small differences under a main class

      One could probably argue that TF2 itself categorizes its "classes" as members of a broader class, i.e. Scout Soldier and Pyro being under "Offense" isn't really different from how a game like Paladins or Overwatch, both clearly being TF2 inspired, handle things. The fact that the TF2 mercs are unique individuals and were clearly intended to be such from the "Meet the team" videos who gained an increasing number of unique abilities as the game was updated as well as kits that have nothing to do with their alleged "class" (like Demo-knight for a really old example, a build created by items added based on the character's lore and not "class," and is completely useless for actual demolition work), and the fact that on release, the medic had what is essentially an "Ultimate ability" in the form of Übercharge should also not be lost on anyone.
      I'm also not going to grant "small differences" separating the heroes being what makes a hero shooter, because anyone who actually played something like Overwatch, Paladins, or Monday Night Combat would tell you that different characters in the same class are very significantly different. "Small differences" would be more applicable to something like Quake Champions, and maybe R6 Siege where they at least have access to pretty much all the same weapons as other members of their class (or just all the same weapons in the case of Quake Champions), but have armor/speed stats tied to class, and their unique abilities are things you're going to be using relatively infrequently due to cooldowns or limited uses.
      I'd also say that "hero shooter" and "class-based shooter" aren't mutually exclusive categories, and one is generally, but not always a subset of the other. Like, Overwatch is clearly still class-based, but while Quake champions is obviously a hero shooter, it's definitely not class-based, the only thing bringing together some semblance of "classes" is different champions having different speed and HP stats.
      TF2 clearly isn't on the level where the Mercs are effectively MOBA characters translated into an FPS like Overwatch, but with how broad the variety in "hero shooters" goes, the idea that it definitely isn't I don't think is one I'd commit to. Like, yeah, class-based games will often differentiate the classes a lot, and giving them unique abilities based on class doesn't turn it into a "hero shooter," but TF2 is honestly way closer to Overwatch than it is to say, Battlefield 2, or literally any game made by Splash Damage.
