@@amandab1064 The number of expats working in China has dropped since the pandemic began, and China's population has already started a decline that will probably last decades. There are different estimated ranges of population change. Still, by the end of the century, America's population, which will keep growing modestly due to immigration, may be larger than China's, which will have declined significantly.

At 30:00 about the decline of Russia because of lasting war. I think it is a credible point but the funny thing is that as of now, mid November, the main casualty was the US’s global empire with the revolution that just happened in the US, and the forces that want to transform US from a global empire to a nation state have just won.

    • @ELcinegatto87

This guy is a hack. Russia has done the polar opposite of decline over the last 2 decades. Also it wasn't a "revolution" and Trump is US Primacy chauvinist that sells it to voters with nationalism. His China policy is the opposite of isolationism, same for large military build up increases. The Empire is declining because it's run out of places it can expand to and the unipolar moment is over. Empires either expand or the stagnate and die. Russia's defense industrial base alone, purely in conventional weaponary output terms runs circles around the entire NATO bloc combined. Neoliberalism hollowed out the western industrial base. Forget China. It overtook the US economically years ago.

@@kirkm5040 It depends what you mean by US 'interests'. They've been waxing hard since the collapse of the Soviet Union. One might say US now pursues its 'interests' unbridled, with ruthlessness, hubris and contempt for the international order. You've reminded me of what's often said about the public interest. "What interests the public is not necessarily in the public interest." That the US public aren't interested in what their country does in their name overseas isn't deserving of absolution. Ignorance of the law is never a defence. The American people are culpable for their ignorance of the menace the US has become. All Americans can do is hope for mercy from the people among whom they've sewn such ill-will.

I've read Kaplan's books since 2001, staring with the Coming Anarchy, He has taught me so much. But to hear him validate a Harris administration staffed with competent people, shows me he has lost touch with reality. There is no way you could look at the last 4 years and come to the conclusion that this wasn't anything other than a incompetent group of bureaucrat's. The withdrawal of Afghanistan debacle? The open boarder chaos? The social experimentation in the pentagon that has obviously led to dereliction to their duty to defend America instead they commit to woke social virtue signaling. Harris has a clear track record in California and its a record of incompetent management. Mr Kaplan your disdain for Trump which I sympathize with has blinded you to America's left wing danger.

Interesting lecture. I think my question would be what role one sees for hubris in tragedy by this definition. I have generally thought that Greek tragedy is particularly relevant for modern geopolitics because it usually is about hubris and the divine or natural retribution that this inspires.
in this view, overreach in foreign policy invites tragedy because hubris - ate - nemesis. We create our own nemeses through our own hubris.

It is true that democratic voters have a hold on politition; however, according to Plato, if the "pilosofer king" ever existed he would certainly feel a higher calling.
It is unacceptable from Mr. Robert Kaplan to automatically brand every eastern polititions as somewhat free of feeling of burden.
Robert Kaplan by his wrongful assertion has unjustifiably has put on the late Joseph Campbell's shoes.
Some mistakes big as this is unacceptable from a well educated individual. I do not beleive he is such person. Using Suadi Arabia, libia and the likes as .. is ony a sign of ignorance. These givernments operate under the unreasonable pressure of unjust, undemocratic polititions of the west.
Naming few characters in a mythical story so catualy is also a sign of ignorance and lack of respect for the audience.

If Hitler hadn't invaded USSR in 1941 how do you think UK would have done against the Nazis? Would FDR have been so aggressive w/lend lease and convoying prior to 12.07.41? Without an aggressive US posture pre-WWII would Hitler have declared war after 12.07.41? A large part of the credit for the defeat of the Nazis goes to Stalin's USSR.
