  • My presentation for Lightbox Online. A talk using gun design to go over various design fundamentals and theories. Unfortunately, the live event got beat up by technical difficulties, but I came back and rerecorded the rest of what I wanted to go over and stitched everything together for youtube.
    This is basically like getting to sit in on one of my college classes, so I hope you enjoy it! Be sure to check out other LBX Online content all throughout various platforms and on ‪@LightBoxExpo‬ .

    The concept of anchor points seems like one of those things that seems obvious in hindsight but will make your imaginary designs 100 times better once you become aware of it and start practicing it.

    35:00 one thing about guns having boxy shapes or spikes up front and curves/blocks behind, I like to think about it as a friendly end for end user and an unfriendly end for the... other end user.
    So the broom handle grip works great but a similar shape barrel feels weak.

    You always explain concepts I never find anywhere else. I wouldn’t be as obsessed with design and appeal if not for you, I’d probably just be trying to design things that look real and never get so into shapes and angles and all the fun things that make drawing so cool.

    Didn't see a comment about this yet, so I feel obligated.
    The *magazine* holds bullets to be fed into the chamber (where the rounds are fired from). Most modern guns use a detachable magazine. A *clip* is a device used to load a magazine, which was primarily a thing with older rifles that had an internal, non-detachable magazine. This is like your ww2 US G.I. loading his M1 Garand by pushing a clip into the top (watch your thumb!).

    Please, if you would care and have the time, make also an Intro to Character Design tutorial.
    You would do just one character design and record the full process. There would be multiple sheets(front and back poses on one sheet, another with design variants, another with some moves and poses, another with a complete and detailed illustration of the character). It can be a project you work on for yourself but cared about recording part of it for that intro to character design.

    I was wondering - what might be the anchor point of things that have a lot of variation, like airplanes and boats?
    Airplanes, I was thinking maybe a cockpit/nose or the wings are what sell it. Most likely the wings, I suppose.
    Having a hard time quickly drawing planes in accurate perspective.

    • @javannapoli2018
      @javannapoli2018 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely think it would be the wings, I always had trouble drawing aircraft, but after this video I might take another shot at it.
