Character Design Workflow - Concepting for 3D Games and Movies

- The first video of a really exciting collaboration between Proko and Pixologic, the makers of zBrush! We’re going to be simulating a workflow as a character designer creates concepts and passes those to a 3d sculptor to convert to a workable 3D asset. This is a real world example of how these artists work together to create assets for video games, film, toys, and collectibles.
So in this video, gaming industry veteran Scott Flanders will show you how professional artists take their concepts from their earliest ideas on paper, to final concept. Then we’ll pass those off to Joseph Drust from Pixologic, to bring them to life in 3D.

What I got from this very useful video:
1. Themes
2. Shapes
3. Contour
4. Form
5. Compression Hammer.
Proko, I cannot explain how much this helps me and the other artists stuck in quarantine. Thank you so much
What software do you use?
@@DarkestKnight2424 you talking to proko or to me? Either way, I use clip studio A LOT. It has a ton of features and is one the best drawing apps there. It allows you to draw and stuff without paying but many things are limited. Its cheap though, like 10 bucks a month.
Artists are always stuck in their own world jaja...with ir without quarantine. 👍🏼

Thank you Proko for the opportunity of learning something useful, that calms, and made me be lost for hours learning your teachings.
You are a great teacher. Love your conversations with Marshall.😉
I love your art fundamentals tutorials and vlogs, Proko, but I really hope you'll delve more into the art entertainment industry like with this video!
Check out FZD school, Feng fully focus in most art entertainment subjects..
@@theyayo i m glad!!! i checked the comment box... U suggestion opened a portal altogether for me... Thank you so much ❤️🙏
Leader: Robin
Right Hand: Starfire
Big Guy: Cyborg
Outsider: Raven
The Kid: Beast Boy
A very strong dynamic!
The team of three is a cool idea for pixel fighters. Maybe three girls, the RGB sisters, representing each color of light. :)
I love it when you bring guests on to show off their craft, so much inspiration!
7:08 describing Kim Jung Gi
I know it's not the point here, but this guy is really cute and has a good, soft voice to listen to
I'm... 😍
Nice collab dude, cool to see you doing something with/ for 3D artists
im decided, i will become concept artist
Good luck
Doing expect any money under any case
Redclaw wtf? don’t tell him that it’s discouraging also if he’s good then he will make money lol?
Look whatever anyone says dosent really matter. The end of the stick is be a great artist and people pay you. If you arent good then people wont pay you. Simple as that, I wish you best of luck on your endeavors
i guess i have to work harder... still nothings gonna change, i will be like them soon
Exactly what I'm starting studying to do! I'm looking into mastering photobashing right now, it really helps with getting a workflow in environment design. Btw does anyone know if you can be a concept artist in general or if you have to specialize into chara design, environment design, creature design or object/vehicle design?
You write with your left hand !?!?
DEMON !!! SERVANT OF CHAOS !!! HERESY & BLASPHEMY !!!
SUPREME EMPEROR MITTENS I can’t tell if this is a joke or not lmao
you know the word sinister is Latin for left handed.
Im seeing this more than one time, this process make me a lot of inspiration and i want to merge this knowledge to my pieces, THANK YOU!!
This is such a great video, often it can seem like concept art is just creating eye catching designs, but being able to round out those ideas and tell a story adds so much additional value.
i know this is 4 years old, but big guy reminds me of vilgax from ben 10
It todays world by "job requirements" on Artstation in this 23min you should deliver also 3d ready assets, maybe some substance textures, and that's hammer should be ready to animate :DD of course don't forget 3 skins variation for each character 😂
Spear Ranger, Tech Wizard, Hellboy But Cyber, The Coolest Robot I Have Ever Seen.
Does this guy know he's being unconsciously influenced by Vampire Hunter-D? :P Even the floating ball and large hammer weapons! Cool design though.
I've struggled with getting ideas started and this method was so fantastically helpful. I went from crappy sketches to flowing ideas. Thanks for this!
"Happy accidents are a big part of my workflow" he says, as Bob Ross's plushie sits behind him
Why do those characters look like they are wearing draft punk cobra Commander style helmet?
Love this channel!
Status: second view
Istg, dude I'm struggling with a character design rn and this email popped up. This helps sooo much
Omg, such informative video, and because of this nice guy full of positive vibes. Thanks a lot for this workflow
make a art compition please sir
Evolve is was and always will be special game for me... Ever since I played it I felt like I wanna create stuff... I loved every design in that game.. It was just different and now I wanna learn this. :D
This’ll help with my own work flow. Never occurs for me to write my ideas down. I just go. Could help me land a few clients later down the road.
Proko, I found your videos two weeks ago while I was looking for videos to help me learn draw. I’m beginning in this Journey, I have doodled around before but never took it seriously, so I wanted to change now. And these two weeks of seeing your first videos of you explaining anatomy and figure drawing, I did my first drawing on my own and I cannot express how better I got just by following your examples. Thank you tons. You truly are the best
Virtual hugs
Keep it up!
Thanks for all those tips in one video!
I now understand the creative process better
👍🏾💯
I love this guy’s vibe! Such a entertaining and informative video
Lol I just downloaded z brush for the first time
does anyone know if and when the proko beginner drawing course is coming? I saw a video from 2 years ago, he mentioned he is working on it
Scott! Hell yeah buddy! Making the illustration department proud!
I just realized the team comp of The Boys
Leader: Butcher
Right-hand man: Frenchie
Big guy: M.M.
Outsider: Kimiko
The Kid: Hughie
Right-hand man could be M.M. cause he's like the advicer of Butcher, but Frenchie just can't be the big guy XD
wow este vídeo fue revelador se nota lo profesional que es la verdad estaba bloqueado sobre unos personajes que quería hacer pero este ejercicio me encanto ahora mismo lo estoy practicando y salen cosas muy interesantes gracias por su aporte increíble!!
You ever redesign film or tv characters? Ever think of redesigning bad character designs from tv or movies?
coooool, I really like how keeping it simple. Adding and adding more simple makes it look very natural and complex. Really cool video. Can't wait for the next one.
Flipping heck, the right vid at he right time for me. Proko your content is beyond legit. A solid go to to learn a lot of stuff.
This is so cool my guy I definitely learnt this and it’s so cool to have this
my brain when someone is talking about collaborations when i'm tryna learn :
*Bitch Shut Up And Teach Me Shit.*
One of the best proko vids I've seen. Amazing art and great to hear him voice live thoughts to his character design. Saved this as a must rewatch!
Hi I am new for these things And your videos really helps to know alot Thank You
Proko makes art.
Proko is art.
I could try this step by step and mine would look STUPID
Now i wanna make a big protector character with just like 30-odd little hatchlings on their back
Yaaaaay. Im so happy for this new video and Collaboration. Thanks Proko.
Dude this was an awesome video. It really helps us newer guys in finding ways to just let creativity flow. Thank you so much.
I'm in the line between 3D modeling or concept art / illustrator, don't know in which invest my time the more. Both kinds of art are super appealing to me, I guess I've to try both, and then I'll see what to choose, does someone has a good advice?
It's always good to go into what you're passionate about, but if you like both equally, it's my understanding that getting a job concepting is much harder than modeling since there are so many more modeling jobs than concepting jobs. If your goal is to make a living with it, might be good to focus on modeling first till you can make money and then branch out to whatever else interests you? Granted, I'm just a guy on the internet and not a career advice guru but that'd be my plan.
Look into a 3D concept artist. Some concept artists use ZBrush.
Look, there are balls in the background.
Se algum BR que manja dos inglês pode criar uma legenda para este vídeo por favor. (não confio n tradução automática) OBG!
Eu até queria legendar, mas não tem como pelo celular :(
I wanted to be the first to coment :d
Yay just what I needed
Scott is amazing, I look at his work often for inspiration and improvement.
Damn this android look good! Chappie :P
I don't comment on a lot of your videos, but I do enjoy most of them. You find some great artists as well, awesome presentation. Thanks to you and Scott and teams.
I came here just to Ogle at the cute guy
Aaand he drew borderlands characters silhouette
Yoooooo, i didn’t know there’s a league action figure!!! That’s so realistic!!! Awsome we!!
if i had to criticize i would say, this guy sounded real muffled, had to turn the audio way up to understand him clearly at points.
to clarify, his words were blending together, like he was mumbling. im sure this could be cleared up by looking at audio settings.
めっちゃ好き😍😍😍👍👍👍✨✨✨
does anyone know the square brush he uses at 12:47 ?
The rug really tied the room together.
👊Your video is so beautiful and cool.❤ Your video is amazing. my friend ♡♥ liKe❤️❤
I have recently started character designing and this video is really what i need to improve my skills...
Awesome......
useful for the character design
man learning art is certainly a lot of effort, lol
In 2021
"ok I'll start on paper"
Digital 3d concept artists: Paper what is that???
Seeing him just use values to shape out the characters was really enlightening. Thanks a bunch this has been great for someone who is just starting out.
22:44 Isn't that Vilgax from Ben10?
Hey i see Peter Han sketch behind you on the wall that dwarf and hog sketch 😮and i also see Karl Kopinski art that sword man i just want to say they are my inspiration 😊
They're great! And we have videos of those pieces being made on the channel!
What an awkward way to hold the mechanical pencil, he made me remember the monkeys from the Zoo, come on you are telling me a pro artist at that level can't hold a damn pencil properly and is like a chimpanzee :S
I just pissed myself
Remedy to my recent illness😍😍😍😍
Some of these tropes though, and constant surveillance of Artstation for ideas though is why a lot of art might look generally the same, conceptually, these days.
This guy seems very stuck on Star Wars. As much as it might be OK to rely on something popular for an idea, he needs to grow his ideas and vary them.
does art directer know how to make 3d?
This will definitely be my week's theeng
Much preferred the pencil concepting to all the digital stuff, but then I'm a trad caveman 🙃
Never been this early
Uau!! Great to see Proko going in to other directions. Great video.
He’s a master of shading
"If I have photographic memory and I could draw like a printer..." ... it would take you ages just to get basic shape and shading, if you could maintain correct proportions that is, which for human vision are tricky: certain elements shows bigger in your mind than others. Even if I have that gift first thing I want to make stepping into world of drawing is getting rid of it. Become impressive. Quick. Efficient. And yet fun, because I can still "turn on" "printer mode" and be very accurate about small details. Salvador Dali once said: "I would paint way better if I am way less inteligent." And that is it: do not oversaturate your art, keep proportions, keep illusions, and make something that is readable, not realistic. Because "Reality makes crappy special effects crew."
Can I take character artist as my career?
Great tutorial. As artist, we are creating lives. :)
Does anyone have any suggestion on how to study colors. All of my drawing has been basicly just with pencils so it's colorless and I want to learn how to use colors but where do you start? If anyone have any suggestion on where should I start I would really appreciate it.
i recommend Marco Bucci's videos
If you can get a digital drawing device like the one he's using in this video, get it as soon as possible. If I had something like that when I was still young it would have changed my whole life a little. If you can't get one right now, get some cheap acrylic paint and painting paper and look up on TH-cam how to mix colors. Keep on practicing and remember to have fun making art. Good luck.
@@costincreates I'll make sure to check that out, Thanks!
@@RobertF- should I start by learning on how to mix color?
James gurney "color and light" is the best book for that.
Man what are those rectangle brushes that Scott is using??? I'd love to try those out!!
Nice video! What program are you using?
Photoshop!
yoo i have the same pencil :D
Please show how to draw Animals ,structure, Anotomy, etc..
Infinite Painter has fill tools instead of making a selection then filling. Reducing any two step process into one is always worth it
BIG thanks!!! These two days I watch you I've known more than the previous year.
The kid, where's the kid? 😂 💀
happy accidents are part of my workflow, that was a reference to Bob Ross. lol
Great, I love your style of working, Thank you
That Peter Han’s Illustration and the Ahmed Aldoori’s drawing are awesome, love those artists. He has the dream studio set up😍!
5:05 the duke & pipsqueak
Thank's Mr. Proko...

Good content..👍
Bro dam sure I'm telling u I created my own characters with out any practical education...
please make more videos like this about character design...thank you very much
What brushes does he use?
This is literally wat I like to do but don’t know wat degree I would have to work for to get it does anyone know ?
