    Driven SS for 12 yrs. Never damaged a rim on a flat. Noticed better traction in snow, but worse traction on ice. Never had a tag axel so I've never been stuck.

    With dually's, at least you can get to where you can have the tire replaced. The super-single requires a new rim and a three hour down time waiting on a tire guy to come to you. It happened to me last night.

      Its still illegal to drive with a blown tire driver, either way single or dual. Its a violation either way. So just think abput that, yeah could still hobble over to a truck stop but if caught, you could pay extra too.

    Owner op at landstar, been running super singles for 7 years.
    A few things to add, no matter what you are running as an O/O invest the money ($100 to $200) in a TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system)
    It will save you thousands, not only keeping your tires at the proper pressure getting more miles per tire, but also saving tires that could of just had a simple repair turn into rubber all over the road.
    If you are having traction issues, invest in a set of bear claws, Trac grabbers makes some for about $200.
    Ive litterally been stuck up to the rim in mud and pulled my way out.
    Even with spending the $400 on those two items, running super singles the fuel and weight savings are almost enough to buy a new set every year if not more.

    I run a 379, and I must say, I just don't see the traction issues much. However I have seen guys with set back steer axles really struggling with traction issues. My biggest positive for them is I like that I can get 350k+ miles out of them. Never been able to do that with duals.

    Duals all the way. The worst experience I had with a SS was in I lost a tire in BFE Northwestern Nebraska and the closest shop with a replacement was 7 hours away. If I had 11Rs every tire shop has them. I was down on the side of the road for more than 10 hours and had to pay 14 hours drive time to the tire truck. It was a $2400 tire.

      I lost a ss and was back on the road in 2hrs. Scranton, PA. You see the holes in your argument? Also, you could have put duals on just that one side right? Yes, you can mis match them even on same axle as its all about weight rating.

    It's the same way to an extent with 'smart way verified tires' they have a lower rolling resistance, but you do spin more in the winter. I switched to XDN 2 Michelin's and the extra traction helps a lot in the winter. The truck does get .2 tenths of a mile per gallon less, but being spun out on Snoqualmie is the worst feeling in the world.

    I have been driving on duals for 32 years and recently started with a company that employs both duals and super singles. On some uneven pavement, while running the super singles, I experienced severe trailer whipping. I have never had that with duals. This solidified my opinion about super singles: I DO NOT like super singles.

  • @realcanadianrailfan110

    The issue with super singles is if you blow one, it messes the rim up as well, so, you not only have to buy a new tire, but rim as well.

      Welding a little bit loose chain or attach a strap around the axel, so when the tire blows up the chain or strap hold the axel and the rim never touch the ground. God bless you.

    I'm a 14 wheel driver. Not by choice. I run flatbed as a company driver.
    Positives:
    Easy check 4 tires for air.
    You can go up 120psi for weight distribution
    And yes Rolling Ressistance.
    Negatives:
    Deep ruts on bad roads. Usually asphalt roads are worse. Concrete roads are usually smoother.
    Stuck in snow. Hell yes.
    I blew a tire. Had bad cords inside. I paid for tire n service call. And company told me a new rim also. Which was BS.
    But, far as hauling weight. I do haul 48k steel coils, n heavy loads of lumber.
    You have got remember check the air pressure. And check for heat. My Cascadia 20 series. Shows me temp n heat. I still check them very very regularly.

    My comment is from my 3.3 million miles of exp. NOT from 800K miles. . I would never have a dummy axle if I was driving in snow or bad weather. Why risk it?? I have used both. NEVER had a blow-out with singles. And only 2 blow-outs with duals. MAIN thing is maintaining your tires. I would check my air pressure EVERY 2 weeks. I bet 90% of you never check your pressure. 1 aluminum and one steel for the extra weight ??? LOL that extra 30# does not help anything. If I was going to order or buy a new truck - it would not bother me to run either. The thing to keep in mind is - what is good for YOUR application. PLUS I see regular hiway tires on trucks and they say NO traction. DAH, PUT snow tires on in the winter. Hiway tires are not suppose to give you traction in snow. AGAIN, it is what works for YOUR application. Most of you never pulled "doubles" , I have for many years. I ran super singles and never had ANY problems. They worked great for MY application. I think many of you that are against super singels never drove with them. You just heard the rumors on how bad they were. They are 100% better than they were 10 years ago. Companies are putting "rookie" drivers in the trucks with ss on them. If they were so bad they wouldn t do this. The pro: weight savings and fuel economy. Cons: having a blow out and sitting there and can't drive to get it fixed. Everybody has an opinion. This is MINE. Safe trucking to all.

  • @thewhamji
    @thewhamji 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I am a commercial truck tire salesman. And I have customers that use super singles and customers that use duels. I cannot stress this enough. There is ONLY 1 REASON TO RUN SUPER SINGLES. And that is to save weight. If you haul super heavy all the time, like container trailers or something like that. And you need to cut down on weight as much as possible to make your load legal, you can run them. But if not, please do not run them. Here’s why. They cost more. If you catch a nail, you’re stuck. You can’t limp in to a shop for a repair. You risk destroying the tire and the rim if you do. And also consider availability. Super singles are not super popular. So if you find a shop that carries them, you will only have 1-2 options. And good luck finding them used. If you are buying a truck. Look for one with low pro 22.5 tires. That’s 295/75r22.5 (275/80r22.5 if you want Michelin tires.) Those are super common and you will have a much easier time price shopping different places. Also if you are looking at a truck that has 285/75r24.5 tires, either don’t buy it or ask them to lower the price by a at least $5000 so you can replace the tires and wheels. That is a dying size and is getting really hard to find. If you like the ride height of that size, consider switching to 11r22.5. It’s just as tall, but way more common

    What you were thinking of was flotation (SuperSingles) versus slosh/snow penetration (duals). Chains will get through the slosh/snow - so the same argument you make @2:38 "...Super singles, you really just... ...you really just need to pay attention and maintain them properly... make sure you have good PSI in them..." Chain up to gain grip and hard penetration points through the snow - and of course going into winter, if your tread life is nearly worn down, there will be no tread clearing and they'll float (just like any other tire).
    IMHO, new tools mean new skills to learn - flotation is useful on soft soils, mud and sand, where duals will quickly sink up to the frame rails. Kind of a cop out IMHO to look down on a tire that performs well on sand, mud, wet and dry pavement, but not so good on snow or slush around the freeze point - when that's one very specific road condition that is limited and manageable.

  • @mattberg916
    @mattberg916 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If you drop your air suspension then chain the dead axle to the frame and reinflate your suspension you can get yourself out of a jamb. You won't be legal if loaded but in a jamb legal is irrelevant. Just be careful to chain straight from frame rails down and directly under the bags then directly back up to the frame. It is possible to bend things down there.

    I used to have Michelin X One wide-base tire 10 years ago. That's the proper name for Michelin. Super single is the name for the Good Year tires. I drove the retreat version on that tire and I didn't see any problem with the traction at this time. And I was driving in very icy road conditions with that tires. Like coming down from the canyons north of I40 winter time on a road covered with black ice. Mostly trucks even with dual tires were out of the road on that terrible winter day. I was not only good at that day but I was passing mostly trucks from the left line on that icy road without any filling that I am losing traction. 5 years ago I got dual tires on my second truck and I am keeping that tires only because if you blow a wide base tire the cost to replace is equal than you blow 2 dual tires at once. That's only the reason I will keep driving dual tires. The traction was not an issue for me with the wide base (super single) tire.

  • @Inferlogist
    @Inferlogist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    in my opinion , there is only one problem with the super single , it 's that you have to carry a spare tire with you because it 's hard to find a replacement on the road , especially in Canada .
    I saw a video of some Asian company making supersingle tires with two separate pressure compartments , but there is only one nipple , during the ride the pressure is self - balancing.

    You make some very valid points, but I also think that the type of Tire makes a world of difference. I have super singles and had tires on my truck that were intended more for road travel and refrigerated trucks. I had them swapped over to the Michelin xdn2 tires and it was beyond and Improvement. These things are like running all terrains on a pickup and AR 3 peat Snow rated. Never again will I go back to anything but these tires.

      I have been to America loads of times on holiday there driving a minimum of 6,000 miles each trip and the shortest trips been a month and the longest been 10 weeks where I drove 15,000miles in those ten weeks,I love driving but my health stops me been a truck driver no which as Americans say really sucks.

Do a cost per mile comparison & see if the duals are better or worse.

    Please explain how you felt you had more traction as soon as you put on the duals.... because that's where you're losing me. I saw the post you would have thd same traction on clear pavement no matter the style of tire. Tread design also plays a large role in this. I've run singles for about 8 years now, had 1 blow out due to a nail. Always ran Michelin grips (XDN2) rarely had issues, but I also have 2 live axles.

    Do you by chance know what the Weight difference you had going from the singles to the duels? I’ve got singles on my T 600 and have been very happy with them and I have two trailers that have singles and I’m considering putting singles on more of my trailers. Weight is a big factor for me. Thank you.

      This! Lift would be even better but dump valve is easier to install and cost-effective. European truck manufacturers tried to offer super singles about fifteen years ago but they didn't get traction... Anyway, if it's not pushing you forward it's braking you. That's why duals for drives and singles for everything else.

      @@p1kkujuha Not true some forest trucks has supersingel on the drive tires in Sweden, Its about having the right tires and diff locks and dump valve. We have real diffs on both axel and we can dump the second drive axel fully loaded whit a loading crane in the back that makes almost 20 000kgs on the drive and then you have traction enough.

    • @p1kkujuha
      @p1kkujuha 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@truckingswe ok, that's new to me. We have similar forest trucks as you but as far as I know we have only duals on drive axles in Finland. Depending on how axles are arranged (2+2, triple, tridem) lifting tag axle might or might not help getting traction. Having a crane back there surely helps. Some trucks like most Sisus and I think some Volvos can disconnect last drive axle and lift it while fully loaded. Weight transfer on full air rides is becoming more common too.

    I’m going to have to disagree. Super singles save close to 225lbs per axle they are mounted on. If you have them on both trailers and drives, you are able to scale 1000lbs more weight which can certainly add up over time.
    Also when it comes to fuel economy, relieving 1000 lbs of rotating mass significantly helps with fuel economy AND stopping (uncommon fact).
    If you have a 20 ton Jack and a torque multiplier like most O/O do, a blowout shouldn’t even be something to sweat. You just need one mounted super single spare and it is good for any corner besides the steer axle.
    For someone who is smart and keeps an eye on their equipment, it will save more money than duals 7 days a week.

    First, the dummy axle is a joke.
    Second, if you blow out a super single the rim will fall down and get ruined before you get to the side of the road. You’d think they’d have some kind of chain or something to keep the rim from hitting the pavement.
    I’ve only run duels with all steel rims once to go into Canada and it made my empty weight heavier than hell. I guess that’s the advantage of super singles.
    If you run the mountains in the winter and have to chain up a lot, definitely go with duels....and buy a real truck, not a flatland special.

    20+ years in OTR, Van, Reef, and flat. Some things to keep in mind, 1 NO DUMMY AXLES! If you buy a truck with a single screw you are an idiot, go back to being a company driver you wont make it as an O/O. 2 Super Singles = fuel economy. If you are running skateboards or spec./heavy duals are fine, fuel economy is not an issue. 3. If it is bad enough to throw chains, it is bad enough to shutdown. Don't be supertrucker, be a professional. 4 is all about fuel economy. Yeah a 389 or W900 looks GOOD, but will cost you thousands a year in fuel revenue. 5 automated transmissions shift much more economically than you can, get one.
