DIY HUGE Reptile Enclosure. False Bottom, Drainage Layer, Sliding Glass Door |Part 4|

  • Building a Huge Reptile Enclosure. This reptile cage has been a fun project and I'm happy to show you part 4 where i go over designing a false bottom drainage layer for a large reptile that likes to dig. He would dig right through the weed barrier separating the Leca clay balls and substrate. So I came up with this idea to problem solve. I also add the front face to the enclosure and trim it out. I install the glass track and a pocket door so the reptile cage glass doors opens up all of the way for viewing, maintenance and accessibility.

      I already have the rough edits put together in 1 video. It's currently about 20 minutes long. But I know you get the "editing side of things and how long that can take lol.
      Content line up as follows:

      But I like your idea of adding the full series in 1 long video to.

    Nothing like some morning coffee and some bioactive builds! Holy holes haha that must of been tedious. Stoked to see more uses of the zoopoxy. Zoopoxy has no limits, im glad you got some.
      The flex is a good option for going around round objects but is softer, so it's not ideal for high traffic area's. To my knowledge, it's more of a tough rubbery substance when cured. I'm going to try it out soon.

    We got a regular vivarium wiz kid over here, and I love it. The most ambitious bioactive builder on the platform, if I do say so myself. I'm very interested to see how that behemoth viv holds up and grows in I've never seen anyone attempt an undertaking of that magnitude. Is there any reference you know of that your basing your expectations on. Do you expect it to be just as successful as your other builds?

    • @bradsbioactivebuilds
      @bradsbioactivebuilds  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanx Luke! And im interested to see how it holds up to. So far, so good. I know some of the plants aren't going to make it, but it is expected due to what I'm putting in it. But my theory is to over plant to have safety in numbers, then problem solve the ones that were taken out with hardier plants. Other than that, this is my most structurally sound enclosure to date.

    Hey Brad, I'm about to build my first (smallish) DIY enclosure. Could you tell me which zoopoxy product you used for your background? I search zoopoxy and there are more options from them than I expected and it seems a lot better than excavator clay. Thanks!

      Polygem Zoopoxy 307 Lite. Also get the thickening agent. It goes a long way with it. You can call them and give them the dimensions of your build, and they can add up how much you will need. Let them know you want the same stuff I used. That will help them identify what you're doing. Have fun with your build and lmk if you have any more questions!

    Thanks for the link to the door handles, those are really nice. Lets say your door frame height is 28 inches... How do you figure out how tall your glass doors need to be? Considering I'm sure the tracks take up additional space so you're no longer working with a full 28 inches?

    • @bradsbioactivebuilds
      @bradsbioactivebuilds  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      No problem at all, and they are nice handles.
      Honestly I just take a small 1 inch cut off of the bottom and top glass track to the glass shop along with the opening (your case 28" door frame) and let them know you need a peice of glass to fit inside of the 28" with the glass track. They do all the measurements and cut the glass. It's always nerve-wracking when you install bit for the 1st time lol.
      Rule of thumb, though, is a 1/4 inch. So 27³/⁴ would be the height of the glass.
      But to reiterate i still find it best to give the custome glass shop the opening with glass track cut off.
      Hope this helps

    Amazing build, I am kinda confused about how your drain works. So after watching this twice I know you make 4 sections and cut notches in the dividers and put weights on them to help make a low point. But what I don’t get is how the water is going to flow if the base is flat.

    • @bradsbioactivebuilds
      @bradsbioactivebuilds  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you, and I hear what you're saying.
      The low point is for the sub floor (the pvc board I drilled holes in), so water goes toward the center. I guess that part doesn't really matter to much but I had the option to do it, so i gave it a try. My thought is it would help the water collect more = drain more.
      The base is flat. Their will always be about 1/4" of water in this part (drainage layer) they clay balls are about 2" deep so water will not collect and rise to the substrate as long as I drain it every 6 months or so.
      Hope that helps and makes more scenes?

    I am working on building out a 6' tall, 4' wide and 2'deep enclosure for my Columbian redtail.
    I am loving the tips and tricks you are providing in this video series. I do have one question about where you get your PVC sheets? I looked at my local big box stores (and their online elements) and had not luck. Most the places i see on line want 200-500 per 4x8 sheet, which seems ridiculous. Do you get your PVC online or from a local hardware?

      I get pvc sheets from homedepo, Lowes or menards. They go for about $99 a sheet. Some regions/states don't carry it due to supply and demand. If that's the case, check out some sign shops or lumberyards. They sometimes know it as expanded pvc board.

Now that I've had the reptile in there and seeing how amazing Zoopoxy is I really didn't need to overly apply with it.
