You're amazing. This improved my day by 200%. Some of my not-quite-pointless inventions so far: · A note stand made out of a rigid transparent plastic folder that I squeezed in between the front and back coverings of my table fan - so I could play the violin without my cat shuffling the notes. · A toilet paper holder made out of a huge nail and the chest strap from an old backpack - so my cat couldn't keep murdering the roll as it sat by the loo. It's great because the buckle sits inside the roll and is easy to open for replacement. Less great is that the HUGE nail (did I mention that this nail is huge?) sits right behind my head when I stand in front of my sink mirror. Yes. Ow. · That ridiculous contraption made out of a wine cork (hollowed out and made vaguely conical), a ziplock bag (that I cut a hole in and shoved the cork-cone into) and paper tape (wrapped like 6 times around the cork-plastic intersection) - because I needed to force-feed my cat when she was ill one time and we were in the boondocks with no proper materials on hand. This list does not include all the frankly bonkers toys I made for said cat out of various trash. What can I say. She was my muse.
Honestly there are a lot of these engineering channels on TH-cam and I think that the way this video is done is astounding. There is something really comforting about doing a simple product with simple tools. It’s a refreshing look on the engineering platform of YT. You rock dude keep it up please 😄👍
Thanks to Tom Scott for this... Actually, no, thanks to you! Great video, very inspiring in the end. People often tell you not to reinvent the wheel, but there's nothing bad about it - actually, what about trying out square wheels? It's not about the product, it's about the process that science builds on.
Thanks! You're absolutely right about how it's the process not the end product. Silky projects like this are so much fun because you learn things you don't expect. I'm so glad I'm able to share that with people
Firstly - a fantastic idea! The name "Un-Brella" is giggle inducing and inspiring. Secondly, as a systems engineer I can suggest the way to make it mobile at low cost. Soda bottles are a great at holding pressure, you can back-pressurize water to flow with compressed air. then you have full control on how fast it drains via regulating the air pressure supplied to the water reservoir. Find appropriate arrangement of hand sprayers (like window cleaner ones) and rig a bunch of them. On paper this should work, but more research is needed. If you decide to pressurize it with dry ice, please be careful and test it to the brim before commitment. All the best!
That's a fantastic idea! Kind of like a bottle rocket, but without the flying away part. I'd definitely need to stress test it. I've been around bottle rockets that got filled a bit too much and that gets crazy
Very creative! Very down home, practical construction methods. Very inspirational. Thank you! I'm going to go decorate some fanblades now on the fan that I never turn off :D
Damn what a good video dude the story telling was sooooo good. It honestly made me feel the same way I felt when I was little watching shows like the up side down show. Just from the way you told the story of such an interesting build.
I made a sprinkler umbrella with an aquarium pump, some tubing and 12 spray nozzles all the way back in 2014. It ran off a 9V battery and would make mist out of a water bottle 😁
I just saw the first Tom Scott comment and thought it was a joke I didn't get, but now there's more... I'm feeling very giddy right now. Where did he mention the mayo thing? That man is an absolute icon!
@@natescovillhis newsletter “(There's also a joke about mayonnaise that made me laugh out loud, and a second joke about mayonnaise that almost made me gag, so well done to Nate on both of those.)”
Fun fact about the Pacific Northwest, much of it is actually classed as a Mediterranean climate due to the very dry summers (especially the lowlands east of the coastal ranges). In addition, it is weirdly sensitive, especially to ocean changes such as the Pacific decadal oscillation or El Nino, or that longer term warming that TH-cam might censor me just for mentioning. So, a random hot dry month or even entire summer when conditions line up right is actually not all that ridiculous, even for Oregon! Its really only when you get up to the outer coast of Vancouver Island where the stereotypical constant wet and cool reigns supreme.
I do know who Tom Scott is but didn't know he had a newsletter, so I assume I'm here due to the algorithm picking up on other people finding this video! However I ended up here, I'm glad I did cuz this was a great video ^_^
As a child of about 6 years of age. I made floating soap. I jammed a shampoo lid into the soap and the air trapped in the shampoo lid kept the soap on top of the water. No more fishing around in cloudy bath water for a missing bar of soap. Sailing. Tied off the main sail equal lengths on each side of the sail. So on each tack I didn't need to worry about setting the sail on each side. I just made sure I only turned the rudder enough to meet the air at the right angle for the length of sheet I had set. It was not good. The boom used to smash over to it's other setting rather dangerously and probably would have shorted the life of the boom considerably, if I kept at it. Used a rotary washing line (Look up old galvanised, "Hills Hoist") as a chair 'o plane for my kids when they were young. Just tied off the seat and back from old plastic chairs to four ropes on the various arms of the washing line and turned the washing line by pushing against the arms of the washing line in turn. If I wanted, I could have gotten my kids sitting horizontally if I got it going fast enough but I only got them sitting at about a 10 degree angle most of the time for an enjoyable ride.

Came for the mayo joke that made Tom Scott gag, stayed for the beautiful whimsy of bodging a ridiculous idea just because
"This week's jug" of mayo is a crazy thing to hear
I like mayo
imagine saying "this week's jug" as if it's a totally normal and sensible amount of mayo to consume in a week
