  • This is a live, slow & sweet, version of the Mercy Seat with Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. It's by far my favourite version and I don't know which gig it's from. If anyone knows, please comment. I know the slide show is not the best, but it's my first (and it's the sound that's important here)!

Their normal live-version of the song with it´s bombastic orchestration is great, but this one is the best i´ve ever heared. More the way Cave and Ellis do thier soundtrack music.

There's something really primal about Nick Cave , especially live... I remember seeing him in Sydney, he played the original version of Mercy Seat & when he leant over the crowd & sang, they began to move backwards.. It is the only show I have ever been to where a crowd surge was actually moving away from the band..

This is best version of the Mercy Seat Nick Cave and Warren Ellis live. With Nick Cave people either like him or they don't, I always have. He's a story teller much like Leonard Cohen was. I like every single album that Nick Cave has done(1973 to current). The Boatman's Call,Henry's Dream,Film scores-The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford(great film too) and Lawless, Let Love In,Murder Ballads(his most popular in the U.S.) top choices.Saw him live a few years ago at the Warfield he sounded exactly the same. Most I know who have even ever heard him usually know Red Right Hand it's okay, not even in my top ten.The Carny, Cindy his duet with Johnny Cash absolute favorites.

Nick was a 15 year old schoolboy in 1973. The Boys Next Door started in the late '70s.

Excellent version - The new 2013 live Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds "LIVE FROM KCRW" has a version which is very similar. A slow and languid version with Warren Ellis moaning the tune of mourning through his electric fiddle. The whole album is remarkable. Nick Cave has risen to the top of musical top echelons once again.

Why god why do Americans, and only Americans as far as I know, insist on calling Warren's violin a bloody 'fiddle'???? Just because he's not playing in a symphony orchestra doesn't mean he's not playing a violin; and electrified or not, a violin is a violin is a violin OK? Please stop doing this. Ask him what he plays and you can bet your bottom dollar he will not say "fiddle".

The last few moments of this one are much definitive of Cave's power.

Now the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is smoking
And in a way I'm hoping
To be done with all these looks of disbelief.
    A eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
And anyway I told the truth
And I'm not afraid to die.

@marciniko Sorry, but Nick cave wrote this in 1988. Johnny Cash covered it in 2000. Have a look at the Wiki entry for "The Mercy Seat (Song)".
The Charles Bukowski reference is because someone did a Bukowski slideshow and used Cash's version of the song as background and posted it on TH-cam. Title "Charles Bukowski - Music by Johnny Cash (Mercy Seat)".
This is misleading, but, you are right, he is an excellent writer - he just didn't write this.
Also, I like the Cash version of the song.
