- This track is found on the lecture CD 'The Secret Life of the Love Song' which Nick released in 2000. I personally find it far superior and more emotional than the original which is found on the 'Your Funeral... My Trial' album. It can be purchased in the link below: www.amazon.co.u...
What a storyteller, and the music nourishes the soul. Play on Nick, don't ever stop.
❤️
Nothing in the world sounds like this thank you blessed poet
I have this cd got it at one of his concerts probably 20yrs ago he’s is a rare lovely human
those last lines and the way he delivers them always get me
I find the original double vocals always so charming and different then most other song because of that. But here in this one i can again sense his songwriting genius abilities. This version is an instant classic ,lovesongcave
Heard him sing this at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival a few years back. The best thing I've ever heard live. Absolute silence from the audience.
nick cave is a beautiful kiss
Genius...what else?
Simple genius. So beautiful
So clean and clear his words. Band is the same. All in unison.
Good old times .
.
this is astoundingly beautiful to me
i do agree absolutely: this is the best version that i have heared of sad waters so far. in my ears one of nick's best and probably underestimated compositions ever. as your funeral, my trial was my first nick cave record i ever bought back in 1985 in this basementindependantrecordstore close to nissan river in halmstad/sweden , this tubecast accelerates my mind for 4:15 min back to those days of vine and roses, amphetamines and noise that i am lucky to call my youth. tack ska du ha, morbidso!
This song gets me every time
love this version
He captures the most elusive moment when you fall in love.
This is just the best Nick Cave for me ... what a CD
simply wonderful, it's something else to hear these captivating lyrics crystal clear, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed! I much prefer this 'clearer' version.
didn't realise how beautiful the lyrics were until i heard this stripped-down version.............this song has haunted me since i bought the album in '85ish
Great...
His best song
Down the road I look and there runs Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
We go down to the river where the willows weep
Take a naked root for a lovers seat
That rose out of the bitten soil
But sound to the ground by creeping ivy coils
O Mary you have seduced my soul
And I don't know right from wrong
Forever a hostage of your child's world
And then I ran my tin-cup heart along
The prison of her ribs
And with a toss of her curls
That little girl goes wading in
Rollin her dress up past her knee
Turning these waters into wine
Then she platted all the willow vines
Mary in the shallows laughing
Over where the carp dart
Spooked by the new shadows that she cast
Across these sad waters and across my heart
But bound to the ground by creeping ivy coils
* Nick didn't sing the "right from wrong" line ..
beautiful!
So proud to be Aussie! On ya, Nick!
Hurts, he wounds, may it never heal
Beautiful
beautiful. thank you
Thank you for uploading this. This version is one of the most beautiful songs I know and it's good that someone finally uploaded it!. There's no one like Nick Cave!

The Ship Song
New Morning
Into My Arms
It's certainly one of them. I'd add Love Letter.

💕💕🎵
Anyway I meant to say that I have listened to both and although the piano and violin are lovely I still prefer the original.
Definitive.
ursäkt: det var påsk 1987, inte 1985. jag köpte "your funeral, my trial" do12" tillsammans med crime&the city solution "room of lights" lp och spacemen 3 "walking with jesus" maxisingle: en underbar meta-akkord...

dont care for this version... but, Nick Cave is God... oh, Deana !!!
It's not rare I got it in HMV when it came out...Everything is relative mate!
Yes, likewise; but many years ago. You won't find it there now, making it rare.
MorbidsoSorbid Oh I never thought of it that way. Sorry for being so abrupt (it's not an excuse but I have chronic insomnia and it affects my moods, not much consolation eh?) It's a lovely song and this version is beautiful, but I still like the original. I have the Secret Life of the Love Song theFlesh made Word in my hand and it is a wonderful CD the way its packaged like a book is beautiful. Did Nick Cave publish it by himself?
I'm reading the notes inside and it looks like he did (swear to god if I don't get a sleep longer than 45 minutes I'm going to forget who I am lol!).
@@AnneAndersonFoxiepaws you seem like a very nice person, you can't be beating yourself up over a lighthearted dig on TH-cam. I also bought this in HMV, the best version of this song, better than the Idiot Prayer version, in Nick's top 10 in my opinion.
a) its not rare b) its not acoustic its a piano c) ....
why have you got (rare acoustic version) in the title when there's no guitars on it at all?
+Gromit Pesley Acoustic means there's no electrical amplification and has nothing to do with what instruments this applies to.
+MorbidsoSorbid Listing it as piano would be far more appropriate. I'm sure you know that most people relate acoustic guitar to the word acoustic. Admittedly, when I clicked the video, I was hoping it was an acoustic guitar version and not this inferior to the original piano version.
Acoustic
Music.
of, relating to, or being a musical instrument whose sound is not electrically enhanced or modified.
arranged for or made up of such instruments:
an acoustic solo; an acoustic group.
love .... however flat..
Its not rare at all
So that's why you're looking at it on youtube?
Thanks for posting this particular recording MorbidsoSorbid. I saw the great man perform this and other songs live in the Olympia theatre in Dublin way back in 2000, as part of the 'lecturing tour' he was performing at that point. It was a sublime experience and your post brought a little bit of that back for me.
