    7:51 small correction, the game sprites were developed for 4:3, but they weren't developed to have square pixels. This is why in games like Kirby Super Star you'll end up with an egg-shaped Kirby if you play in 1:1 mode. He looks circular once the picture is stretched to 4:3. CRT displays would simply beam the image onto the screen at 4:3 without regard for how many "pixels" existed on each line, and developers knew this.

    I work at a video game museum and i can tell you that there are still kids that like old nintendo stuff. One kid actually reminded me of young you, he was excitedly jumping and wanted to screamed to his dad that he found the nintendo room. I get people like Scott are tired of the same games for Nintendo's 8-bit platform getting reissued multiple times but that shouldn't devalue the games as a whole, especially to ones that had never been avaliable either in certain regions or as a whole. I feel the game library for the Famicom and NES NSO apps is for the most part, solid! Nintendo still has a few remaining first party games along with a dozen or so possible third party additions, which makes me believe we are likely to see over 100+ games offered on just this platform alone (which makes up roughly 1/3 of the entire NSO game library). I am disappointed with the lack of care to provide English translations for the Japanese-only games but this has been a problem since Wii Virtual Console, it still stings regardless especially because some of those games are well worth playing.

    • @DanielZeal
      @DanielZeal 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

      Unfortunately, there's no money to be made translating games that will only exist as part of a subscription service. Nintendo has a very conservative view of economics; even if more than 50% of the Switch user base played a translation of a Famicom ROM, there's no financial incentive in doing it unless you could make a profit. That's why Famicom Detective Club was released on the Switch in the way that it was, probably with insurance from the execs that if it did well enough they would greenlit a new game in the series.

      Let's put it this way
      You could've pirated those games easily, using emulators that play them just as well, if not even better than NSO (in fact, NES online multiplayer was figured out for years), as easily as NSO (let's be honest, it's not emulators that are hard - it's you that suck at setting them up, aka dragging n dropping rom and setting up controls for yourself)

    The NES online is alright, but I already have three other ways to play NES games digitally like on 3DS, Wii, and Raspberry Pi! But I like how the Switch online keeps updating new games especially the obscure ones and have online multiplayer for some games! Also Donkey Kong Jr Math is a bad educational game that my friend Richard got as a punishment for having bad grades in math! His parents wouldn’t let him get Castlevania nor Legend of Zelda until he improved his math grades in elementary school!

  • @captainnintendo
    @captainnintendo 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +22

    Something I really don't understand is why in the world the Switch Online apps doesn't allow you to map controls to your liking.
    The N64 alone had such a weirdly designed controller where the button mapping might be with that very design in mind to work optionally and being able to tweak the buttons would just be really convenient
    I mean, ffs. You could do it on the WiiU

    • @RilGames.

    The "SP" versions are so weird. One feature I would have liked for the Switch Online are unlockable "cheats" that you unlock with Amiibo.
    Take Metroid for example, use the Samus Amiibo to get every power up, or the Ridley Amiibo to set your health to 1 and have a "No Damage Challenge", or any Mario Amiibo giving you a random item in Mario 3. It's not hard to manipulate an NES game at this point and I think it's more fun than clogging your library with repeats.

    It's always annoying to me that after decades of telling everyone that Journey to Silius and Mysterious Murasame Castle and Joy Mech Fight are classic gems that people need to experience every time there's an update with some legendary title like that people don't get how special this is and shit on them in the TH-cam comments. Like last year Nintendo officially released Joy Mech Fight for the first time outside of Japan and people in the comments on that video were all "what's this crap, release Pokemon" rather than appreciating that this game is legendary and what a milestone it is and how much it influenced future fighting games (Smash's DNA goes straight back to Joy Mech Fight) to get to easily play it on the same device you play everything else on. I remember TH-camrs nearly 20 years ago who would have absolutely shit themselves if it'd popped up on the Wii VC at that time but the current set of TH-camrs just doesn't care.
    EDIT: To be clear, I'm writing this comment to thank Scott for specifically calling out the three games I mentioned in my first sentence. I appreciate calling out what a big deal Silius and Mysterious Murasame Castle are to have readily available.

    • @alexandrebelair4360

      Because those games are super niche. Face it, the vast majority of NES games have badly aged, people just don't want to play janky nes games. They certainly brought a lot to gaming but the vast majority doesn't want to play them because they aged badly. Also, 20 years ago youtube didn't exist, it came out in december 2005

    • @pattersong6637
      @pattersong6637 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@alexandrebelair4360 I'm rounding because Journey to Silius is a game I played for the first time after watching Deceased Crab's Let's Play of it in 2007. I think that's close enough to 20 years for our purposes. It wasn't a game I had back in my 1990s NES collection because it was a more obscure title, but it was super influential on other titles and you can really see the progression. The point of services like NSO is to make previously obscure games more accessible and allow people to experience the history of video games like a museum walk, and a lot of that is titles that aren't particularly famous but SHOULD be because they're very influential and should be experienced to get an idea of how the medium has evolved over time.
      My point is people's reaction when an NSO drop has rare and obscure titles shouldn't be "Where's X super famous game" which is just incredibly disrespectful to the purpose of the service, experiencing the evolution of gaming. Atari 50 Collection is probably my favorite game this generation because the interview footage and how it put the cultural impact of these titles in context, and I think NSO has the potential to be a showcase of a far broader set of titles.

    NSO across all platforms is up to 175 games on Standard and 104 on Expansion, or 279 total. Next year it'll pass 300. It's been around 6 years and not a single game has been delisted from it (something the Virtual Console couldn't say). The value of especially the Standard tier ($20 a year is under 2 bucks a month) is wild.

      They've already made it clear that NSO is carrying over to Switch 2. Say Switch 3 comes out in 2033 and isn't compatible...NSO would've still lasted 15 years.
      None of us can see the future ofc but given how Nintendo, like everyone else, wants to push people to subscriptions, I see no reason they'd discontinue NSO then either. Price hikes are likely at some point, though.

    One thing not mentioned, but I feel adds substantial value to the NSO service is the “99” games. Tetris 99, Pac-Man 99 (Discontinued), and F-Zero 99 are all included with NSO membership.
    Another similar game in the genre, which is now discontinued but was included for a limited time with NSO service, is Super Mario 35.
    Edit: I realise this video was supposed to be focused on NSO NES specifically, but there was commentary on the whole NSO service. Regarding that, I just wanted to chime in on these games.

    I think the Nintendo Switch Online service games are used as a perk and justification. PS Plus does it too, they give you perks to make you pretend that they're giving you a good value for something you used to get for free. You can say NS Online is a good value, I wouldn't disagree, the problem with these programs is, no matter the value of the perks, they're essentially a forced subscription. It's not a Nintendo thing, it's a consoles' thing. They were just the outlier until they fell to that level too.

    Its so weird when a company fumbles so hard with emulation.
    Like the Wii U's official offerings, which are just baffling. With all the work Nintendo had done in house for well over a decade at that point, as well as countless fantastic open source projects (which, sure, itd be a bad look to just snatch those up for your official console. But privately, you'd think they would look to those for ideas and implementation of various features.)
    When you're charging $5 per NES game, you're product should not be worse than what anyone could achieve on their phone, espevially with how easy it is to just grab a rom and set up an emulator.
    And I dont even mean features. I wouldnt expect Nintendo to offer countless shader option, basically unlimited save states, etc.
    But 1 save state, massive input lag, and a weird dark filter? Yikes.
    Glad they're doing much better with the Switch.
    Also, with CRT filters, I wish they'd offer more options in a submenu. There is so much variety in CRT displays that a single "CRT" option is just disappointing.
    One of the best things I've seen in a LONG time is a shader for Retroarch called "Mega Bezel". It puts a CRT looking bezel around your game which makes your screen look a bit recessed while the fake plastic surrounding it gets a very natural, diffused reflection of the action happening near the edges of the screen. It also gives it that slight convex look of most CRTs. It looks incredible and does a lot for immersion, especially on an OLED. It is so convincing that if you were to walk in on someone using it in the dark, you'd be absolutely convinced they were on an actual CRT. Its genuinely trippy.
    Anyone who hasnt seen it, I'd recommend googling it just to see a picture, its really cool
