The majority of my stuff was bought from a small town thrift shop like 5 years ago, yet apparently I'm perceived as fancy and fashionable by people.
Tasteful = expensive is an advertising tactic, it's all fake! We have no shortage of nice clothes, the trend cycle is just sped right up to a ridiculous degree these days where buying new things is a hobby in itself, fashion isn't supposed to be painful and insecure, it can be fun!

If that ever happens to me I would drop the item I was looking at and loudly say "nevermind, I will just buy it online, customer service is horrible here" because the truth is exactly that. If I am going into a luxury store I already have some specific item in my mind I just go to those places to see if the item actually fits, what size should I buy and if it's cheaper than-same price as online I will just buy it right there and then, I don't like dealing with the shipping.

When I worked there they actually judged you for your keys to see what kind of car you drive, what shoes you wear, purse, clothing, etc to see if you’re the spendy type. But I can see how some people will measure up for their ego. But I was nice and greeted everyone because I hated that judginess and met several top 1% credit card holders in the world for the best commissions. Finally at one store we were actually acknowledged and we decided we would hive them our future business and not the other stores.

It's so interesting cause I've only ever gone into bougie stores as an Interior Design student with other ID students. So, the staff is usually super nice (not always Tory Burch immediately comes to mind) but they were usually pretty accommodating about letting us go around measuring stuff and depending on the place taking pictures. We did usually make a point of reaching out prior or going during super slow hours.

I immigrated to an affluent East Asian country. I could understand and speak the language fairly well, so I could get by with having simple conversations. My daughter and I enrolled in a wind/string instrument class but since I don't drive, we had to walk home. We passed by one clothing store and I thought, oh, that looks nice, and I wanted to check it out for my grandma back home. Went inside and the salesperson who's most likely the owner looked us up and down and asked if I was looking for something. I said I'm just looking around and touched the blouse I saw from outside. She said, "That's expensive." I asked how much it was and she looked me up and down again, smiled and said, "It's expensive." I said thank you and walked out with my daughter. I told the story to my group of friends and one of them said she experienced the same thing in a cosmetic store. She was holding a tube of lipstick and the salesperson said that it's expensive. So she bought it. But she's never used it and kept it as a reminder of what happened. It's a waste of money imo. That's why I didn't buy from that store, why would I give her my hard earned money for something that would always leave a bad taste in my mouth? 😅

Can you talk abt what is better rn, paying off student loans or investing? I recently graduated and have abt $200,000 dollars of student loans. I currently save enough to be able to pay the minimum per month and have a couple hundred left over, should I also put that into paying off my student loan or should I put that into investing?

    • @rachieru382
      @rachieru382 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Both, if possible.
If you're still within the interest-free period, paying off as much as possible means less interest in the longrun, which means less overall debt. Once repayment begins, always pay the minimum. Missing payments negatively effects your credit score. Taking longer to pay off a student loan is better than missing payments.
Viv will have much better advice for investing than I will, but as far as I'm aware, you're going to need a certain amount for the initial investment (ex. TFSAs require about 1k) and then budget for monthly additions (ex. $100/mo. to that TFSA account). Certain investments also require you to leave the money alone for a period of time (ex. A TFSA for education usually allows the client to choose an investment period).
So you can either pay off as much of your loanas possible before the end of the interest-free period (which may not make much of a dent in $200k) or you can set up a type of diversified investment portfolio, make the minimum monthly payment on the loan, and add what you can, when you can to your investments.
Also, check the laws where you are. In Canada, companies (including collection agencies) can't demand more than $50/mo., but companies can send accounts to collections if nothing's being paid (I think they need to wait a few months and try to contact the customer, though).
Hope Vivian responds to you, and that you're able to pay everything off quickly.👍

Oh, I love when they do that.
Say I walked in to see if they have gloves that I might like. If I find one I like, I'll buy it. If they don't, I walk out. I don't like wasting too much time if I'm looking for something.
...Unless they get judgy and rude. Then I'll take as much time as possible, try on things, hem and haw for HOURS if I have the time, and then leave without buying anything. Following me around means I pick up larger, more expensive items to get their hopes up, and then say something like "Actually, I think I'm just gonna get the ones I saw yesterday at [competitor] instead." Or "Shoot. I didn't realize what time it is. I'm just gonna get it online instead."
Do I think they actually care? No.
Is it fun to pretend they do? A little.😂

Just keep in mind when you go into a luxury store that you are going to purchase something that You wanted, not to show off not to show up. I had an incident where they were showing me the lower grade model of a product that I wanted... I asked if there were any more models.... Frustrated and in disbelief I ended up calling the store on another day and asking to speak to a female sales person... She said she would hold it for me and I asked her to be the one that sold me... I didn't care if someone on the sales floor had a commission to make. They all just lined up and watched me.

If you still want to buy from that location I would call out that salesperson and go work with one of their colleagues. No reason to stop yourself from buying something you want but you also shouldn’t give that salesperson money.

treat them in kind, make them feel that despite of their brand their products are trash, so their brands are just labels devoid of any value.

I had to deal with this when even buying a couch. One store I had a lady tell me to look at the clearance section when I was already looking at cheap couch. 😂 she didn't even come up and tell me that either, she yelled it across the furniture section.

    If someone makes me feel
That I can’t afford their store products, I just scroll
Down through my phone and see my bank statement for current or last months and it usually shows big balances in bold 😂😂😂 but it actually doesn’t happen to me a lot. Anywho, it’s a great way to boost your self esteem and tell
Them that we can afford everything in this store, but we know
How we manage our money. Attitude or ego has nothing to do with their products or our affordability😊 simple

I can never be rude to my customers because I'm the owner. But I've had several customers who have been mean to my staff. We had an Australian lady who got my staff to open every display case, show every item, would berate each staff member and then walked out without buying anything. She actually called every item shitty in front of other customers and the other customers started getting annoyed with her coz she kept insisting on looking at the items the other customers had in their hand because she wanted to buy it. She was dressed with booty shorts and a cute top and our staff were always nice. I had to intervene because our senior SA was on the verge of tears, her feet were bruised from standing up for two hours and then lifting stuff. The customer insisted that we light the room better for her so we brought strobe lights from another store and they were on and that month we got the highest electricity bill ever. The young SAs were crying in the dressing room. I realised that after the second hour I had to switch off the lights and slowly indicate to the customer that we weren't bringing any more items from storage and she finally got the clue.

They WORK at the store, not own it. We’re there to buy, if we want to. Don’t let them mind screw you into a sale, even better is to walk away from it all Neither the salesperson, or the company, gets your money.
