Ive never bought a luxury brand in my life. What I buy is stuff from actual artisans. Its cheaper than luxury, much better made, and youre actually supporting real craftspeople.

The other reason to not buy designer is it makes you a fashion victim and a target for theft. I buy stuff that's overlooked it's not 'the' label anymore or it never was. With older bags there is better quality but being obscure brands they haven't held their value. Then I restore and alter it and wear it; for me this is creative and fun. For instance I might clean up the leather and nourish it with a colour so it shows the grain of the leather better. Or I might change the piping so it's lime green against a neutral leather bag for instance. This lifts it and makes it fun whereas before it looked tired and boring. This cannot happen with all bags, some are beyond redemption.
I refuse to buy vinyl bags which supposedly are 'vegan' because they take centuries to break down they're not at all environmentally responsible and they usually crack and deteriorate more readily because they don't have the strength of leather.
I also keep my bags for ages and take good care of them. Many decent bags deteriorate from the owners' ignorance and then they throw them out or into charity shops or on the internet. I fix them and give them away. I had one bag that was so dry it was resisting absorbing the nourishing cream but I persisted with it, it would scratch. Then it sunk in and now it looks amazing. I gave it to someone who had never owned such quality. It's an amazing bag so good I almost regret giving it away but I wanted it to go to someone who would appreciate it.
Although I have recently bought some belts which are expensive, not sure if I will keep them I'm having a bit of a crisis over it actually so it's timely to see this video to reiterate why I shouldn't get sucked in. The reason I bought the excessively expensive belt is I couldn't find what I wanted, which is simple design without a big label. I wanted a thin belt and I've ended up with something that is what I wanted but it's part of a huge story that sucks you in. A lot of the artisans make really great bags but not finer belts. I don't want a 'look at me' belt.
I'm now thinking about learning how to make my own belts. The situation is ridiculous. I might try to make the plaited/woven belts they're great because you aren't stuck with certain holes you just use the buckle tongue to go into the weave. Totally adjustable. I don't want 200 different belts. It's absurd. To get a sense of how bad it is look at the sales on accessories for the unsold items, they're embarrassing TBH.

And recalled a conversation he had with senior at work or something like that. He at the end said that only people getting impressed by something you buy are people who can't afford it. I’ve never experienced salespeople in luxury stores being mean to me and I am not rich, nor do I look it.
I once went into the Chanel store in Hawaii and the sales lady was one of the kindest humans I’ve ever met. I told her I was into fashion and she gave me a tour of the store and when I told her I was embarrassed for being in the Chanel store looking like a beach bum with sand between my toes from being on the beach all day, she told me “no need to apologize! You’re on vacation, this is how you’re supposed to look!” And she let me touch all the display pieces and taught me about them. She gave me a special experience that I’ll never forget.

I have always taught my children to look for quality, not label. I have seen them doing the same it’s their children. When you teach people what things to look for that will matter to the longevity of them being able to enjoy the product, you create some shoppers with critical thinking skills. By practicing this philosophy, I have NEVER spent thousands of dollars on a bag; I know where to buy quality that will last me decades and keep looking good. By shopping for quality as your number one target, you end up with a smaller wardrobe, but one that you don’t need to replace every year. 😍

The Birkin situation both is and isn´t a company policy. The shop earns zero % commission on the Birkin, while the direct earnings are 3, 6, and 9, % on the other bags. The shop therefore uses the "exclusivity" as a way of only awarding high spenders with the possibility of getting to buy a Birkin. There´s no shortage of bags at all, if there was then all the celebrities wouldn´t be able to just stumble into a store to buy one.

    • @deborahcurtis1385
      @deborahcurtis1385 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

The Birkin and Kelly are hand-stitched. They are by definition short on supply compared to demand because you cannot just get artisans to make exponentially more, it takes training and time. But the other bags are more plentiful in supply and they get people to buy them to raise their profile within the store. Basically the company does not want people to resell their bags and goods for profit. Hermès hates this because the resold bags are sold at a premium compared to the store price. This raises the prices again, it's a vicious circle. So they hold back on allowing people to buy them until they feel confident about you.
So they ask to see evidence that the person understands the brand and is committed to it. Hence the evidence of previous purchases and interest in the brand. People get fanatical about brands like Hermès but it's really a bit odd and unnecessary. I'm not a fanatic but I do like their variety of colours and leathers, and the fact that they do repairs. I despise the throw-away consumer society.

I think there's nothing wrong in buying a luxury item to mark a "milestone" in life. For example, let's say you reach 12k USD / mo in income, spending 8 years in your career and you purchase a 10k USD Rolex as a reward. So the main issue is that it's people who can't actually afford it, save for months just to buy the item. This is a classic example of how instant gratification ruins people's lives

If they are saving for months or years, that is hardly 'instant gratification'. It is even worse because they are prepared to make sacrifices a highly questionable end goal.
The main issue is people not living according to their means, mostly because a modest life is perceived as unambitious and/or a sign of failure.

Instead of a luxury bag, I prefer a good vacation 🎉

"Listen, I understand why people value luxury" except most of the things these luxury brands sell aren't luxury, they're just recognizably expensive and therefore 'exclusive' which is something different. 'Luxury' brands give you clothes that don't fit (and often look ugly), shoes that hurt and fall apart, purses that are heavy and awkward, using materials that usually aren't better than you'll find used by mid-range companies who do everything better. Real "luxury" is extreme comfort, beautiful settings, tactile materials, delicious food, and having others do the work for you etc. Luxury brands aren't actually luxurious (in general), they're just expensive.

I used to work at a luxury retail store and we would slash bags before throwing them in the garbage. Also so "homeless ppl cant go in and take them and ruin the brands image" - a manager

There are two groups of people who don't care about these items: people who are rich and can afford it and those who can't. Those trying to impress the rich people...I feel sorry for them.
