I'm so happy they got Jon Bernthal to play Michael. Such a great actor and he became great friends with Ebon who plays Richie when they were both on the Punisher show together in season 1.
This Is the episode where it gets clear the TV show Is not about a restaurant, but it Is about grief and how everybody struggles with it. The yelling Is the pain creeping around them.
I think Richie's thing is that he's lost without Michael. he just lost his best friend and is also going through a divorce, so he feels like his life is falling apart and he's trying to hold on to the one thing that actually still makes sense to him: The Beef. I've never lost my best friend that way but I can imagine it'd be a pretty f*cking difficult thing to move on from. everyone in that family is suffering from intense grief and this show does an excellent job portraying that. btw, I'm from Philly and we just call it soda 😄
Jon Bernthal slays every role given to him!! He has a total run time of 4 minutes or so, but made that great impact. THAT MAN IS SO UNDERRATED! His smile made me cry in the end
Love this episode and how it heavily focused on Richie trying to deal with the changes happening all around him after losing his best friend, Michael. It really adds more to his character. Also loved how Tina started to come around to Sydney and defended her by confronting Richie about how he’s been acting. Very good character development on her part. Thanks for your lovely reactions ❤️
H/t to random Reddit commenter, but the opening scene is a microcosm of the show and the restaurant: Mikey starts working on the braciole/ restaurant, but is too chaotic, distracted (maybe drugged up) to finish. Richie is hanging about, drafting off Mikey's charisma. Sugar kinda does/ kinda doesn't want to be involved, but is cut out anyway. And Carmy drops in once Mikey stops working, and finishes the braciole.
it is pop, I'm from Chicago originally and it is definitely pop. My dad won't even acknowledge what you're saying if you ask for a soda, even from his own grandkids😂😮
Chicago, Indiana, Michigan, etc, I think it’s a Midwest thing. It's funny how you can have a regional habit and never notice it until you move somewhere else

Y’all are so insightful! You’ve called a few things that will happen in upcoming episodes in this season and the next. Love re-watching this peak TV series with you.
20:55 Ironic Richie telling someone to shut up for a change! Take your own advice! 21:47 Sydney handles things without wielding a gun!I hate change too but I accept the things I can't change and try and grin and "bear" it.
I've been driving myself crazy trying to remember where I had seen Richie's actor before and it just finally popped into my head that he had played President John Quincy Adams in the miniseries "John Adams". Loved that series so much!!
He's been in a bunch of stuff - he was in The Punisher, he was on HBO's Girls... Ebon won an Emmy for his performance as Richie this season, and he will likely win it again for S2. Jeremy Allen White (Carmy) and Ayo Edebiri (Syd) also won well-deserved Emmys for their performances, and the show is probably going to clean up again at this year's Emmys.
It's honestly so sad, seeing how Richie behaves in this first flashback. He doesn't act any particularly differently, but you can just TELL that he was in a much happier place in that scene. Like even though they were best friends, you almost get the sense that Richie was like another younger brother, hanging on to Mikey's every word and just eager to contribute or hype him up. It makes it even more obvious how devastated and broken Richie really is now, especially since it seems like he watched Mikey's downfall happen right in front of him

We know how many places are closing around them ( this will come up more in future eps as well), and I think Richie knows that Crooked John and his crew will eventually have to leave, or they will become a disturbance to The Beef, thereby putting them at even more of a risk of closing. Syd’s solution is good, but it’s not sustainable. Getting rid of Crooked John and his crew would be another change in Richie’s life that he would not be able to handle, so I believe he takes matters in his own hands this time, accepting that change is inevitable and protecting the restaurant. I'm from Michigan, and I'm more likely to say 'pop', but I use 'pop' and 'soda' interchangeably. No one's gonna misunderstand you either way so it's pretty much a toss up. Also, I absolutely love Tina's realizations this episode and confronting Richie here. He's obviously in mourning, but it won't help to hold on so tight to old systems that can't be maintained, because, yes, it was a delicate ecosystem but Mikey's gone and Mikey was part of that ecosystem. He has to adjust, but it's so hard to do that. I love watching these characters move through this.

Richie is early-S1-Tina, but even more extreme. He's unable to move on from the past, clinging on to what could have been. I was actually surprised that he didn't snap at Tina when she called him out. An equally interesting and important choice by the writers. The end is him calling the cops, when he explicitely told the guy on the corner he wouldn't. I think the subtext is that they head those issues in the past and they always turned a blind eye and ignored both the dealings on the street corner and how that impacted business. Richie knows that the impact is bad and that it likely won't stop being bad. Him calling the cops is a little step of letting the past go and making an effort -> He wants to be/feel better. Babysteps and all that...

I didn’t take Richie calling the cops as sabotage. Those guys hanging around the block represented the old guard and old way of the neighborhood. It was after he and Tina’s conversation that he realized that thibgs can’t always stay the same and that those guys hanging around was just bad for business. It’s him slowly coming to grips with reality.
Grew up in NW Wisconsin on the WI MN border where it was pop, stationed in southern Georgia as an Army officer where it was what kind of coke do you want and now living in the Twin Cities, (MN) where it's soda. So, definitely a regional/state thing. Maybe even a generational thing.
i feel like sometimes you guys are worried too much and i say that full well knowing the next episode aaahahah Edit: I know this isnt helping but in Germany we say softdrinks hehe😅
A BAR AT 6:45 A.M? WTF? People in New Orleans: Wait that's not normal? But in Chicago, nope. 4AM/5AM on Saturdays. Not sure what bar they are talking about! Maybe a need-to-know situation. Big John is played by my friend Vasily! He's an amazing singer and dancer in Chicago - not at all the tough guy he plays here. And the older guy is another great of the Chicago theatre, Rich Cotovsky. Soda in Chicago is POP. Period. Only pop.
Yall are kissing Sydneys ass way too much. Its hilarious. He literally decided allowing drug gangs hang on the street aint right and he decided to get them away from the resturant. Him calling the cops is LITERALLY changing and deciding not to cling to the past. Its crazy you being so much up Sydney you missed that.
Hey there, Just wanted to give you guys a shout-out and tell you thank you sooo much for your content! It has actually, not kidding, helped me through a really tough time which is sadly not over yet: I’ve been suffering since the beginning of the pandemic physically, culminating in severe depression and OCD. Suffered through several suicidal periods. It’s a long and tough road, sadly. The last 4 years have been hell on earth honestly😭. Luckily, there’s three components that got and keep getting me through: The people in my life, Music and pop culture and TH-cam-discovered several channels among which I found you guys! Right now I’m just thinking about everything and everyone that kept and keeps getting me through, so I wanted to pay homage to you guys! Thank you sooo much, I love you!🙏🫶❤️❤️❤️ The Internet can be a beautiful place because of people like you. Sadly, I’m a real pussy when it comes to television🤣. However, Stranger things still captivated me. It’s just sooo good that I forget about my being a pussy for a moment haha. So I actually just watch your Stranger things reactions and your videos where it’s just a chill hang-out. I really wish I could watch more😉. Therefore, I once desperately tried to talk you into binging Pretty Little Liars-I was that guy, sorry🤣🙈. But you do you! Maybe I can at least wish for more chill hang-outs? I’d love that!😍 If not, also fine. No pressure! Just writing this message because I wanna spread a little love because the world truly needs more of it!!!🙏🙏🙏🫶❤️❤️❤️ Lots of love from Germany from a Stikker by heart 💜, Levin 🥰🦋✨

Yooo thật jiujitsu shirt Steven’s got on is dope! How long you’ve been training?
Grew up in NW Wisconsin on the WI MN border where it was pop, stationed in southern Georgia as an Army officer where it was what kind of coke do you want and now living in the Twin Cities, (MN) where it's soda. So, definitely a regional/state thing. Maybe even a generational thing.
i feel like sometimes you guys are worried too much and i say that full well knowing the next episode aaahahah
Edit: I know this isnt helping but in Germany we say softdrinks hehe😅
I'm in Michigan and I can tell you this is firmly 'pop' country.
pennsylvania here, most everyone i know says pop
I will always call it a soda. Unless I call it by the name.
I might be the only native Texan that doesn’t call every drink a ‘coke’. It’s either ‘soda’ or the actual name (Dr. Pepper, Sprite, etc) for me.
All soda where I’m from is referred to as “coke” no matter what kind, do you have any Coke?
We call it cooldrink in SA
Richie calling the cops is him trying to do what is right to keep good business coming..can't have good business with gang members hanging around.
Grew up calling it pop, just a midwest thing
Eating Well has all the recipes for the show if you wanna give 'em a go😊
good to be early, keep it up
Early 2025

Richie is starting to feel obsolete and he will be left behind He's the type of person who cannot accept change easily.
I live in Canada, and it's "pop". Soda just sounds goofy to me.
It's "pop" in Canada.
Cola is a flavour...?
Lol, Aussies call it 'soft drink'.
we call in pop in ontario
A BAR AT 6:45 A.M? WTF?
People in New Orleans: Wait that's not normal?
But in Chicago, nope. 4AM/5AM on Saturdays. Not sure what bar they are talking about! Maybe a need-to-know situation.
Big John is played by my friend Vasily! He's an amazing singer and dancer in Chicago - not at all the tough guy he plays here. And the older guy is another great of the Chicago theatre, Rich Cotovsky.
Soda in Chicago is POP. Period. Only pop.
Have you guys thought about watching shogun? Sorry if I missed something about it, game of thrones level show
Soda here. Will never call it pop. And you’re insane if you call it Coke. There’s only one Coke.
You have to react to Daredevil and The Punisher if you love Jonh ! These are great shows !
It’s definitely called pop but it’s a Midwest thing
have you guys stopped doing horror movie reactions?
We say pop in Michigan
Lordy, you have no idea what's coming. Buckle up, it's about to get crazy.
I live in Ohio. It's pop. ☺
Pop here in Ohio
Pop in Ohio as well
This episode made me really find Sidney annoying af 💀
Yall are kissing Sydneys ass way too much. Its hilarious.
He literally decided allowing drug gangs hang on the street aint right and he decided to get them away from the resturant. Him calling the cops is LITERALLY changing and deciding not to cling to the past.
Its crazy you being so much up Sydney you missed that.
Hey there,
Just wanted to give you guys a shout-out and tell you thank you sooo much for your content!
Just writing this message because I wanna spread a little love because the world truly needs more of it!!!🙏🙏🙏🫶❤️❤️❤️
Lots of love from Germany from a Stikker by heart 💜,
Levin 🥰🦋✨
