Yeah these old little Canons are seriously underrated! I did a video on the Canon A420, an even older camera (I think), a couple months back and the results astounded me! I mean like you said, the noise is trash, and there are so many bad things about it, but it's really great for taking your skills further. Or even just slapping you with a brick of nostalgia. You inspire creativity in me all the time, and using these crapcams actually is so liberating! Oh, and surprisingly, the JPEGs are surprisingly workable!
Had the A610, best compact camera I used for a decade till it got broken, got some great shots and memories. The sensor size made a difference. I was very happy to see you chose this Canon series camera.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras Glad you mentioned CHDK, I mainly used it for HDR Bracketing (everyone had that "phase" I guess...) and also Time-lapse photography for StarTrails, It really gave the camera "Pro" features that were missing... You didn't mention the 1cm Macro which is Amazing! 🤩 I now shoot with the G5X-II and it's only 5cm which is meh... kinda miss the 1cm. Have a great weekend!
Thanks for the video! Glad to see you review a Canon camera and mention CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit). I shoot the Canon SX1xx series because of their fully manual capability, AA batteries, higher resolution and, of course, the use of CHDK hack for raw images. My SX1xx's are also hacked three other ways: external battery, detachable LCD viewfinder and remote flash sync. The flash sync capability not only permits remote flash, but also allows one to take advantage of the leaf shutter to darken the background relative to the flash. With these hacks, one enjoys the features and resolution of a recent Canon G-series camera for a fraction of the price! Additionally, I develop the raw files with the Filmic RGB module in Darktable. So, I get all of the goodness of the CCD and post, film highlight rolloff!
Yeah shutter lag lag is definitely something I don't miss about the old digicams...I remember trawling through dcresource (acquired into dpreview at some point) to see how good/bad the shutter lag was.
Owned the A630 since bought new at Circuit City in RSM, CA. Although I own a lots of digicams, DSLR, I have shot most of my pics with this camera. You nailed it with this review - for what it is it's so great. Took it to Tokyo for two weeks - it fell out of the pram when coming down an escalator when exiting a train platform. The flash crapped out after that. It's a lot like my G6 (no 2.0) but more refined. TY - I liked and am a new subscriber :)
Oh, no! You're letting out the secret! PowerShot A series prices are going to blow up. I have a few dozen digicams and some DSLRs, and I am consistently drawn to grab my PowerShot A560 when I walk out the door. It's light, has a great grip and feel, loves light flares and reflections, and even the low resolution video is great. I highly recommend this range of PowerShot cameras, just don't pay SD1000 prices. Speaking of which, much easier to hold and operate one-handed than the SD series.
I grabbed a a620 from the thrift store for $10 in November . After watching another amazing video from you, i gotta use it this weekend Thank you for sharing it is greatly appreciated
Great review. I bought one of these in 2006 when they came out and still have it. I have had some great pictures out of it. I started to use it for holidays and motorbike trips where talking my EOS and all the bits and pieces was not practical
This is the same reaction I had when I picked up a A530, I was blown away at the tech it offered for the time that was taken for granite. I would love to see a Canon G9 review!!! Pls see this!!!
This comment is in reference to a vid you made a year ago - which I just watched - I currently am shooting a Konica Autoreflex T3 which we bought back in 1973, went missing so rebought for $50Ca (28mm-f/3.5; 50mm-f/1.4; 200mm-f/4.0) and just found a Konica Auto S2 (rf) - $20CA with a 45mm f/1.8. I'm learning developing b&w; color sent off just for developing and scanning with my Canon T7I. great fun for a 73 year old.
I distinctly remember the 2000s Canon cameras winning me over because of their menu structure while testing them out in Circuit City and Best Buy stores. I loved the Custom option because it allowed me to test other people’s recommended settings to mimic Leica Digilux colors.
I was an old film shooter, even making a living for awhile with an old Nikon. Then I sold cameras for a bit. After that I wanted to try digital without going deep in. So, the wife and I bought a Powershot A630 to try out. It was a pretty good little camera for the day and what it was. I did the third-party software and was able to shoot raw, but never used it much at the time. I finally gave that little A630 away to a kid a few years ago. Now with decent DSLRs, a pile of lenses, and some mirrorless gear, I still have a soft spot for that model though.
Everyone seems to go along with the claim that all the newer cameras are better than the old stuff. Yet when I show them pictures taken on my old A80 or A570IS, they're unable to tell which pictures were taken with an old camera and which ones were taken with a new one. In low light it's no contest due to the better sensor sensitivity of newer sensors, but out in the sun it's a very even match. .
Great vid as usual! I'm using the holidays to catch up on OMTC vids I missed (this year has been bonkers 😵💫) These always get me excited to go out and shoot. Slow sync flash 4ever!
Excellent detailed review. I had an A620 and an A650 a while back, the A650 in particular made great 12 megapixel images with the same 35-210 lens as the Canon G9. As you mentioned you want to shoot at iso 80 or 100 if possible. The A620 was good too, that's the 6 megapixel version of the A630.
Digicams have always been Kool, even before they were called 'DigiCams'(?), because they were so practical and immediate with cool pics and they took away the fear of the cost of random experimental shooting with film. I still have a slew of early DigiCams that I still grab to go for a walk and catch that photo opportunity. They have been for years my EDC/every day Carry. Today for fun I grabbed my very old(2002?) Toshiba PDR-3330 that still works as new and still looks nearly new, to go shoot Fall colors and Ducks and Herons along river. It is a 3.2_mp CCD with 100 to 300 ISO, a Canon zoom lens F-2.9 _ 4.8 and 35mm _ 100mm, and has a digital view screen and viewfinder, and uses SD cards and easily available DbL A batteries. $500.00 new. $5.00 _ $25.00 today.
Hi Ali, thanks for this review. I found this channel some days ago (something with CCD sensors brought me to the review of the Olympus E1). I really enjoy your reviews and your One-Month-Two-Cameras thing... I was, as many others, forced to forsake the film photography for now and have to embrace something else (maybe digicams??) I´ve also follow you on IG and enjoy your story telling work with the different cameras... Keep the nice and inspiring work! Regards from Sweden!
There’s an option in CHDK software to have it run on start up which makes it seamless. Then if you want to not run it, just unlock your SD Card. CHDK demands locking the card but it doesn’t impact your DCIM images folder.
I remember that it came with a program that let you shoot from the computer with the camera connected by USB, you could even see what you were shooting because it worked as a webcam. It also allowed you to change the sounds that the firmware made. I changed them for Japanese drum sounds and that's how it stayed until now.
Surprising output from that camera. Do the images suffer when the zoom is engaged? How pocketable is it on a scale of 1-10? I like that you touch on the intangibles such as the viewfinder experience and how it handles. I’m still teetering on these digicams can’t seem to pull the trigger on one. Somehow they don’t fit in my small collection or I can’t see myself using one very often. I like looking and learning from your show and tells, however. You keep tempting me, lol. 😅
I own a powershot a700, amazing camera! I’m unable to figure out the settings to take photos with the same effect as in 15:50 . It would be amazing if you could help me out with it 😊
I missed the 630 and though I discovered the chdk I never use it because I’m lazy. The highlight latitude is a little surprising. My DSLRs from that period clip the highlights really bad. Good review and I will say that the interface on this one and some of the other A series is pretty good.
Awesome video! Just discovered this channel and absolutely love the content. Keep it up! PS. About to pick up a Canon Powershot A550 - literally from my mom :D
Thank you for reminding me about CHDK, it's some time since I last looked at the site, but I see they support the Powershot SX120is I have so I will give it a try. I have a spare SD card to install it on to try it out. As a side note, you folks in the US certainly seem to pay a lot more for your mobile phone services compared to us here in France ;)
Nice video. Love all things photography. Have recently broke out my old Canon SD1200IS i got new in 2011. Then i got a DSC P200 Sony for 5 bucks at goodwill, works perfectly. Won't replace my larger camera bodies but they are fun to shoot.
Looking at the menu on this reminded me of the Canon PowerShot S5IS, a great little camera. If you like this you will love the S5IS. And, yes, I am a Nikon shooter.
I was looking at selling my A620 on ebay and assuming I'd get like 30 bucks for it. No, they go for over a hundred dollars! I mean on one hand, it's a surprisingly alright camera. If you use the base ISO. And don't mind barrel/pincushion lens distortion. And don't mind trying to find SD (not SDHC, not UHS 1 or 2) cards.
Excellent video as usual. When the Jpegs look that nice SOOC, who needs RAW?! :D I found with these old digicams that the two big deal breakers for me are bad looking (ex. mushy) noise and large dust spots on the sensor.
Got one for free about a year ago it takes great shutter drag photos in night scene mode I love it! I plug the SD card right into my phone and edit on lr mobile
I used a A640 for a while. Slightly upgraded compared to the A630. Great little camera, but I wanted RAW-support without the need for CHDK. Also used a Sigma DP3. Fantastic image quality at base ISO, but really horrible battery life. The only camera I've ever used where the CIPA battery rating is fairly accurate.
Can you please walk through the settings you use (and how to find them) and when for beginners? I love how ur photos turned out but mine look nothing like that 😭
Nice video! I had an A85 that I just sold and I have had the A500/600/700 line in the past. Fun little cameras but WAY too expensive these days. If anyone wants a similar camera but doesnt want to pay the huge price, you can grab an A series Fuji Finepix, with the incredible SuperCCD sensor (starting in the A610, which I have and love) for half the price of what these Axxx series Powershots are being overpriced at. I just won an Ebay auction on an A825 for $11, so great deals are out there. The Nikon CoolPix S series (look for an S1, S2 or S3) is another great alternative that is much cheaper. Hope that helps someone 😊
@@helo2729 Depends what you consider “cheap”. I would stick with the Canon Powershot G or S series. The S30-S70, which are smaller versions of the G1-G6, not the SD ELPH cameras people are overpaying for. The Fujifilm FinePix A series starting with the A610. The E550 and F series are not cheap these days. Or the early Panasonic LUMIX FX and LX series, which are basically Leica C-Lux and D-Lux cameras for a fraction of the price. The rest are all hit or miss with a lot more miss IMO
@@helo2729I just recently started picking up the picture taking big again and it was receiving a free Panasonic "Leica Lens" Lumix model DMC-LC33 as my workplace stopped using it and went with an iPad . It or any of the lower megapixel point and shoot but they are usually $5 to $15 each. The catch is these use MB SD cards not GB cards. I now own 5 or so older of this style and only the Panasonic let's me use a Gigabyte SD card. The others say "card error". Have to specify MB SD card to maximum I believe 2gb or expect problems. The earliest Canon PowerShot series can be bought really cheap however they require Flashcard or Compact Flash 1 and the matching battery which aren't always cheap. Another issue is the auto focus mechanism on these are made of hair thickness plastic and eventually jam or break, so try to not be continuing to power up and down making the lens pop frequently. They are difficult to find ppl to repair it. Be cautious about buying "Minolta" brand as the plastic used to make them breaks if you breathe on them too hard. Nice looking but they break easily.
LOVE the jpegs coming out of this camera! I’ve recently picked up the PowerShot S95 and it’s been a joy shooting with it. I wonder if there is a way to pixel mapping the sensor, as I’m getting few stuck pixels on my jpegs. Nice one Ali❤
Hey you took a lot of nice photos with this camera. I've had quite a few of these Canon digicams from the 2000s. Not sure why but never liked the look of the 8 megapixel cameras. However there are numerous 7 megapixel ones which I know you have one of them those seem to be the sweet spot. Also I've never really liked the look of the A cameras something about that noise looks mushy like you said, always got better results with the Canon S or SD cameras. Some models are way better than others there are some real hidden gems out there.
Yes it holds up really good ally...good job...how it raw when u have chdk 😂...I feel I gonna be getting one of these ..I love 35mm whole day...happy good Friday fam
what do you think of the Nikon S630? picked it up recently for $25. apart from the slight quirks like setting the date/time, settings etc every time I take out the battery and the awful display, I love it a lot. I had a Canon A2200 but idk what happened to it and I get black lines all over my images :(
i have question about shutter time. is it possible to for example walk through city like new york and take photos of people not being extremwly blur? i want to buy that camera but mainly for street photography and im scared it will end up like buying old sony - eveyrthing will be blured
Photos being blurred has less to do with the camera and more to do with the settings you dial in. If you zone focus with a fast shutter speed and deep depth of field with F5.6 on a small sensor, you’ll be fine with any camera that has manual capabilities. However having a camera with higher ISO capabilities allows you to work with higher shutter speeds in more challenging light so something like the later Canon G or S models or Panasonic LX line up or Ricoh GRs are a better suited digicam for street.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras i understand, so i can set shutter time on the camera? i know it sounds weird but im unable because of internet connection to watch video and i wonder what is possible shutter time on this thing
@@anemiaenemy for street you just want to shoot at 1/250 or above which you can do on any camera that has shutter priority or manual. This camera has both.
Don’t be limited by the model number. Most of the Powershot A series are remarkably similar and looking around should find you one for $20 with patience and research.

My first digital camera was Canon a70, ah nice memories :)
LOVE the jpegs coming out of this camera! I’ve recently picked up the PowerShot S95 and it’s been a joy shooting with it. I wonder if there is a way to pixel mapping the sensor, as I’m getting few stuck pixels on my jpegs. Nice one Ali❤
S95 is the best ccd camera you can buy. I have 2 of them and sold all my other compacts because of it.
Great video - thank you so much. I have a A610 that I bought in 2008-ish and I love it! Not great for shooting action though!
Interesting!! Appreciate your thoughts.
Can I ask what ring light you're using?
Have not seen here sony dsc v2 here? Have I? This is a very nice ccd camera, slow but worth its image quality
Yes it holds up really good ally...good job...how it raw when u have chdk 😂...I feel I gonna be getting one of these ..I love 35mm whole day...happy good Friday fam
Happy Friday! Best of luck grabbing one. Have fun!!

What’s the name of the website for the jpeg to RAW?
Yay printing!
I prefer Casio cameras as those are much faster in operation, especially AF, zero shutter lag, metal shell body..
What software to you use to enhance the images from these old digital cameras?? Thanks!
Good old Lightroom! You can see a full video of my post process here - th-cam.com/video/UQYCLuV6P9o/w-d-xo.html
Te best, there are an alternativa firmware (CHDK) You can make phostos in RAW, time lapse, ISO more than 800 (but noise 😢) etc.
what do you think of the Nikon S630? picked it up recently for $25. apart from the slight quirks like setting the date/time, settings etc every time I take out the battery and the awful display, I love it a lot. I had a Canon A2200 but idk what happened to it and I get black lines all over my images :(
Oh I haven’t tried it! I’ll take a look.
PLEASE HELP!!! my flash stopped going off all of the sudden. I press down for like 20 seconds and still nothing. The red-eye setting is off.
Those prints though🥵🤯
i have question about shutter time. is it possible to for example walk through city like new york and take photos of people not being extremwly blur? i want to buy that camera but mainly for street photography and im scared it will end up like buying old sony - eveyrthing will be blured
Your best point and shoot camera ?
hey quick question - does this power have the option of adding date and time timestamps??
I have always pronounced it see-aitch-dee-kay. 😊
*Buys shares in sigma batteries
😂😂
Loved this video thank you so much x
Thank you!!
i am going to charge my batteries
💃🏻
Why is it £150 😭
Don’t be limited by the model number. Most of the Powershot A series are remarkably similar and looking around should find you one for $20 with patience and research.
I find one camera like this
Oh my GOD this outfit
😂
Its CHDK !
i got this camara, the only thing tha i can say about it, it is amazing!!!!!!!!
