I think it's a perfect time to get a digicam. Upgrading to a Panasonic S5 soon, and a digicam like this should be essential for any professional to keep ourselves grounded in the more core art of photography
Woahh I've never tough of that. That unprocessed look is definitely gorgeous and the fact that you are not using your distracting phone and just focused on enjoying your surroundings sounds like a nice experience
The community for old cameras is great, even making the camera better. These things were expensive at launch and the value shows. Unlike modern "digicams"
I just picked up this camera from a local thrift store this week, and I've been really pleased with the quality of photos you can get out of it so far when shooting RAW. I wish I could get CHDK bootable on a card larger than 4GB since having to do the firmware update bit every time really bogs down the shooting experience when I'm out and about, but other than that it's really nice. 14 megapixels on a CCD produces really nice colours and has plenty of resolution for cropping. Anyway thanks for the video! I had actually watched it a while back so it was neat to revisit after actually using this camera for myself. I hope to see more from you soon. :)
Hey! Thanks for watching! That’s awesome you picked one up and are enjoying it. I’ve had to take some time away for work and currently building a new studio… will be back to making videos once the new space is done.
Your processing is amazing, and very nostalgic/film like. Could you show how you processed some of those images such as the red car etc. Do you ad the vignetting? The nostalgic look to your photos surely has a lot to do with how you process them. That would be so awesome. Great video! : )
I was surprised this camera is so much smaller than my phone. I can pretty much cover it with my hand when shooting. Definitely less intimidating than walking around with a big DSLR or even mirrorless camera. Thanks for watching!!
Really interesting stuff! I was considering starting off with a more expensive camera, but after watching your videos I’m thinking of giving digicams a try!

Liked and subscribed! I love compact digital cameras. I'm a big fan of the Canon models. I don't have one anymore, but I will keep an eye out for one after watching your video. If you really want to see something interesting, take a look at the PENTAX compacts. They had some really odd ones back in the day but also outstanding image quality.
The 5-6 seconds you mention... Is that the time it takes to capture the image (ie the shutter speed), or just the time it takes to write the file to the SD card?
Just the time to write to the SD card, not recommended for fast moving subjects but anything else where you can take your time it’s not that big of an issue.
I looked at the site a while back but got scared I would kill the firmware and brick them heh. I then decided perhaps the JPEGs were part of the fun and if I wanted to shoot a small camera with RAW, I’ll just grab my GR III or IIIx lol. Problem is, they don’t have a flash… I have the great little Pentax flash for them but that then defeats the purpose of grabbing a small camera to begin with, which is where these old cameras, especially with an OVF really win relative to anything modern. If someone made a new point and shoot with an OVF (the one on the SD990 even zooms when you zoom the lens!) with manual mode (like SD990), a built in flash, and RAW, I’d buy it instantly. Also, instead of giving me more megapixels I don’t care about, use today’s processing power to give this dream point and shoot beautiful built-in film simulations like my modern Fuji cameras have for those times when I do just want to shoot JPEG.
I've been surprised by these little cameras and love that the images aren't technically perfect. I might do some X100v comparisons soon... Thanks for watching!!
Hey I was wondering how you imported the photoes you took on the camera to your laptop/computer? I tried to find the model in the canon website and it said this device was no longer supported.

With digicams I usually just look for CCD sensors. In my experience they'll give you more of that early 2000s vibe. That's a tough one, I think it will probably be much slower than what you would like in that situation especially trying to grab moving subjects, people ect. I haven't exactly found what I would consider a fast ccd digicam though haha. It will be a much different shooting experience than a modern Fuji, you just have to adjust your expectations for the subjects and situations you can capture and be mindful that you're at the mercy of how long it takes to write an image to the card.
I was looking into getting a Canon S95 because someone said it shoots like a Ricoh GR and it does good for night shots. How are the shots on this in low lighting?
I’ve heard the S95 is a great camera but I haven’t used it myself. This camera isn’t great in low light and most older compacts like this probably won’t be either. Sometimes the extra noise can be a totally fine depending on what you’re going for and you can always just convert to black and white if you need to shoot in a situation that isn’t well lit.
Excellent video Brandon! For anyone who wants CCD goodness and built-in RAW functionality in a Canon PowerShot, check out the S90, S95, S100 cameras. I have the S95 and it doesn't have any processing lag when shooting RAW.

I never take pictures on a cell phone. I have a Canon ELPH 190 IS. I like the photos that I take with the Canon better then those taken on a phone. It is a shame that no one wants to use a camera any more.
Very useful video and nice photos, they look quite 3D! I have a Sony WX80, I enjoy using it but I get sad when I see the photos in my computer screen, they are that bad. I think I only would use cameras with optically corrected lenses to not pass much time editing. Said that, if you are a raw shooter and don't like the computational modifications, why don't shoot in a cellphone with raw capability? I know it is not the same experience and I like the form factor of the SD1400, but seeing your video seems a bit of a lot of work.
Hey thanks for watching! I enjoy editing as much as shooting and have just gotten used to that being a part of the process. I think some cameras are better suited for certain things kind of like instruments or any other creative tool.
What do you prefer, this canon power shot or your FujifilmE550 ? I know this canon came out in 2010 and the E550 came out in 2004 and I hear the older the camera and sensor the better to get that old school retro vibe on the pictures. Do you agree ?
If I had to pick one it would be the Fuji. It’s nice to have raw built in and I think it has a better lens. They’re also a bit harder to come by though.
Anyone got problem running CHDK on this camera? Just bought it to hack it and i cant find the firm update to boot chdk. Would appreciate help if anyone had issues like me!
When you were editing your video, how did you make the slideshow of images? Did you put them in photoshop or canva with a border? Just curious, wanting to do something similar
That might have been less time consuming haha. I put them in the premiere timeline over a white color matte and then sized them all to match. Thanks for watching!
My understanding is that this hack stores RAW files in the DNG format. This is the format used by Lightroom and Photoshop. File size for DNG is about 10x the JPG file size, with a corresponding amount of time to save to memory card.
I used Lightroom for all of these images. I’ll be putting together an editing video and giving away the profile I used for these images. Thanks for watching!
Hey thanks man. Haven’t given it up it’s just been a very busy year with work and family. Wrapping up a few major projects in the next couple months and should be back to making TH-cam videos.
They are very different cameras. The iPhone output will be technically better but it’s also not true raw. There is lens correction, sharpening and other things happening with iPhone raw. Digicams like this one will give you more of a grainy filmic look so like most cameras I wouldn’t say one is better they just produce different style images.
The fact that this little thing can shoot in RAW makes it really amazing.
I agree!! Thanks so much for watching!

They’re also a bit harder to come by though.
real nice!
I got ccd camera take a picture too.ccd camera is very popular in china.
File size for DNG is about 10x the JPG file size, with a corresponding amount of time to save to memory card.
cool video
Do you edit on lightroom these raw images?
I used Lightroom for all of these images. I’ll be putting together an editing video and giving away the profile I used for these images. Thanks for watching!
@@brandonmurray3629 okay waiting for the editing, by the way i just hacked canon powershot a480 after watching your video! 😊
Nice content.
Are the photos that u previewed the raw version or did u edit them?
All the photos are edited from the raw. I'll be going in depth into editing in another video and sharing a profile I use for a lot of my images.
what's the difference between the "IS" and the one without that two word lol help
It's too bad you gave up doing videos. The video quality was good and so was the audio quality as well as the pacing and content.
Hey thanks man. Haven’t given it up it’s just been a very busy year with work and family. Wrapping up a few major projects in the next couple months and should be back to making TH-cam videos.
Do you think this camera takes better RAW’s than iPhone RAW’s?
They are very different cameras. The iPhone output will be technically better but it’s also not true raw. There is lens correction, sharpening and other things happening with iPhone raw. Digicams like this one will give you more of a grainy filmic look so like most cameras I wouldn’t say one is better they just produce different style images.
I just found this in a closet thanks for the vid
Jesus loves you ❤
$40?? How about more like $240.
Now everyone knows about this camera they go for more then $150 on ebay....
I think the CCD camera market in general is going up. Still cheaper than shooting film 😊
