    The more of your channel I watch, the more I'm starting to think you are seriously one of the best real world mechanics out there, and by real world mechanic I mean working on actual vehicles, not just strictly high performance, infinite budget type stuff

    as far as cracks in the flywheel, i think id replace it if it was a high rpm application, but in this situation, get some more life out of it! great videos!

    Had the thought a lathe could work to resurface a flywheel, went looking, and found your video. Thanks much. However, I'd really like to see how you mounted the flywheel to the lathe. I don't have a spare crank shaft I can cut off to mount into a chuck. Perhaps a custom face plate drilled and tapped for this purpose. Still a helpful video, again thanks.

    you a very intelligent person from what i can tell. in canada its cheaper for us to buy a new flyhweel from amazon or aliexpress than to get it machined in many cases. also please wear gloves lots of fine metals and asbestos

    Thanks for the video. Do you use the same bolts to remount the flywheel and Pressure plate? If you do use the same bolts do you use blue thread locker on these bolts?

    If (more like once) your channel gets a lot more popular, you should use the money to put compound turbos on the 4BT Tahoe, idk if that's even possible, but it would be a great how too video, and your Tahoe would be very fast. I would watch it.

      Benjamin Ewald We are raising some funds through patreon to build the 1939 Studebaker Commander and put a Cummins in that. We would like to put compounds on it. It would be exactly the same as putting it on the 4bt. It won't happen without Patrons though. Thanks for watching

      Benjamin Ewald We are really happy how things picked up in the last month. Subs, Patrons, Views and income has all pretty well doubled. Pretty excited to see where this goes. Thanks!

    Nice job. How does the cutting tool deal with hard spots? Is it a special cutter?

    Can you do a dual-mass like this?

  • @BrownParticles

    Woulda been nice to see how you chucked it up on the lathe. Nice finish though.

    • @DEBOSSGARAGE
      @DEBOSSGARAGE  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry BrownParticles . Pretty much just put it in the chuck and spin it with the dial indicator on the face. The high spots get a tap with a hammer until the dial indicator reads minimum

      What good is dialing it to 0 runout if it is warped????

    After machining do you need to shim the flywheel? And if so do you then shim the state the Sam amount?

    • @Joshie2256
      @Joshie2256 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the few thousandths removed are easily accommodated by the clutch release mechanism.

    • @eddiemessina9907
      @eddiemessina9907 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No… the pressure plate will make up for it, but the clutch pedal will release (unnoticeably) higher
      Example: (For example purposes, let’s say the pressure plate could accommodate for 1/4 inch flywheel cut and let’s say the flywheel could withstand it as well… again just exaggerating for the example)…
      So, let’s say you cut the flywheel a quarter inch, the pressure plate would make up for that quarter inch, but your clutch pedal would release much higher. So, the adjustment would have to be in the clutch cable (non-hydraulic clutch system).

    im trying to pull the motor out of a first gen cummins. eveerything is disconnected except for one bolt that connects the bell housing to the engine. should i take out the transmission or? how do you unbolt the bellhousing????

    • @DEBOSSGARAGE
      @DEBOSSGARAGE  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can take the transmission with it but you have to take the cross member out. I only ever pulled them out together, but I generally don't put them back in the same truck...

    • @scottstauffer1201
      @scottstauffer1201 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      its 4wd do you disconnect the transfer case??

    • @DEBOSSGARAGE
      @DEBOSSGARAGE  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think you have to, but it helps. Why are you pulling the engine?

    • @scottstauffer1201
      @scottstauffer1201 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Engine is super leaky from front and rear. Also replacing the main bearings and oil pan gasket

    • @DEBOSSGARAGE
      @DEBOSSGARAGE  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would leave the trans in then. Just bellhousing and clutch housing bolts. there are studs centering the bellousing that might be tight

    little bit of a late comment but question. I have never seen it done on a flywheel, but why not stop drill the crack? in aviation, some panels and skins are allowed to be stop drilled if the crack is small enough to remove the stress and keep it from growing and larger. could you drill both ends of the crack with a small bot and then machine the flywheel?

    • @TheBryce98
      @TheBryce98 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My guess is this would unbalance the flywheel.

      @@TheBryce98 weld the holes shut, grind down, turn it again. meh, too much work for probably no real benefit

    You get what you pay for... and a little less.
    Bad, bad service. Bad parts too.
    I won't go back there.
