Great instructional video as usual.. I replaced the failed Dual mass flywheel on my Skoda Octavia Tdi with a four piece National brand solid flywheel clutch kit. The set only cost me €200, I also replaced the rear crankshaft oil seal, and the clutch input shafts seal... Managed another 80 thousand miles of issue free driving before selling the car... As I recall, the Valeo single mass clutch kit was twice the price at €400 and the Dual Mass replacement clutch kit was over €1000.. The National brand clutch kit has lasted over 130 thousand miles since it was fitted, and is still going strong... Yes Valeo make good stuff, but it's way overpriced..

Thanks Leon, I have been really worried that I'd made a huge mistake when I did the clutch on our Disco td5. We were getting that horrible screeching noise that happens when someone doesn't lube the spigot bush properly. Anyhow, we changed the clutch at the same time but I couldn't afford to do the DMF. I tried to check it and it did roughly what your new one did. The clutch I took out wasn't too bad and I figured to just go for it as it's our only car. I feel much better now at it was a really heavy job I hope not to have to do again in a hurry.
I think you can still check it on the engine. You should still be able to feel the dead zone or slack. Most dmf manufacturers will specify how many teeth the deadzone should spread across. Am i correct? I saw what you did but i cannot feel how the spring is pushing against.
Yes mate I agree with you there are a lot cheaper but unfortunately not every car car can actually accept them with no issues so sometimes you have to but up with the trouble of them
@@bodgitandleggitgarage yes very true, pro's and cons of both really in terms of vibration and potential damage to the crank on some cars. As you say not all cars accept them. I think some manufacturers are going away from them now due to the issues they cause
DMF's are used to prevent harsh vibrations going through the gearbox. I'll rather pay extra and have a DMF than have to replace / rebuild the gearbox. And most DMF's go when the clutch is worn out anyway. Every car I've had a dmf failure on the clutch was nearly on the rivets.

Here in America most vehicles with dual mass flywheels are on diesel trucks. I always replace them with a single mass flywheel. Some of the European cars also have them. Very few cars here anymore even have manual transmissions.
Yes mate only diesel vehicles have them over here some cars you can change to a solid flywheel just depends we are the opposite of you we get very few automatic here
I had a dual mass flywheel and changed it at 130,000 miles as I was doing the first clutch as a precaution. Pull away in second with the wheels spinning see how long they last. Drive the car normally. The centering bush has cracked and half gone the flywheel surface is off centre and must have had a lot of vibration. 190,000 kilometres ain’t bad in my book.
A few years back, I had a DMF disintegrate on a 3 year old 60.000 mile Xsara Picasso. I knew something was not right as I started getting a vibration wobble when accelerating whilst towing a caravan on holiday in Scotland. Guy at Murchisons Garage in Kyle told me DMF's often pack up in towcars due to the extra load. Beware buying a car with a towbar fitted!!!!!!
Now then, I had a mk4 Golf tdi fitted with a SMF, drove ok, a little jumpy pulling away in 1st but after that no problem. I now have a Leon mk2 Tdi FR 140 ( 1P1 ) with a DMF nearing the end of it's service life, getting a bit clunky. Can you see any probs fitting a SMF ? I keep hearing bad comments about long term damage to transmission etc, why? surely that's down to clutch control. The Leon has done just over 100K but I would say when I bought the car it had been fitted with a towbar so probably got some abuse.
I had a '02 diesel Focus with about 150k miles. I parked, on restarting it terrible sound! I thought the starter had failed to release from the ring gear. No DMF! I limped it home only reving to. 1500 rpm. Sounded and felt dreadful! I needed to use it still but in the return trip I redlined it and did some violent gear changes several times. The noise and shaking stopped, and it was still okay when I got rid of it 50k miles on. Guess I got lucky!
Well maybe this car still have the OEM DFM fitted, but at some point the clutch kit must have been replaced, and that is why it's still in good condition, thank you for showing us this way of testing,it's very helpful.
They usually last around 100k or so if you're being nice to your car! Save yourself time, money, and the headache by just replacing with new one, you'll benefit more!
When mechanics install a new clutch do they ordinarily check the flywheel? Asking as I purchased a car a few weeks ago which had a new clutch installed in Dec due to previous owner burning it out, and the clutch and gear shifting is a nightmare. The dealer has booked the car in with the garage he uses for another new clutch install...but I'm concerned the flywheel is shot and the same issue will happen again if the flywheel is not replaced.

Many of the engines that were fitted with dmf have switched back to solid flywheels in later redesigns. Manufacturers claimed they were required to prevent crankshafts snapping, but the fact they supplied the same engines with solid flywheels and simpler harmonic balancers shows that wasn't true. However the engine idles perfectly, which doesnt suggest an imbalance 😬 So im stuck.
Are they all meant to spring back? I have a performance kit from Sachs SRE and there's no axial movement but it doesn't spring back - just moves left and right.
I hear what you are saying mate but it's not always just cut and dry always comes down to what the customer wants to spend in a perfect world yes always best to replace everything but if you test something and it test 100% and it cost £1,000 to replace what are you going to do
@@bodgitandleggitgarage in those circumstances yes, but I did get a lux clutch kit for my Jaguar X type for £300 so there would be no point messing around there.
Thank you for the video, Do you recommend replacing the DMF at each clutch change? I have recently taken ownership of a 2017 Golf GTI and a few days into driving it the clutch is slipping. The dealership I bought it from have agreed without hesitation to replace the clutch for me FOC, but I am also hearing a slight knocking sound at Idle (not bad at all) which I fear is very early signs of dual mass flywheel failure. The car has done 59k and we're talking about a 230bhp car here so my gut feeling is that they should replace the flywheel at the same time. what are your thoughts?
I've got factory spec free play and 4/5 teeth movement but it doesn't really spring back. It does slowly come back if I put a lot of pressure onnitnfirst. Does this sound good? It's a valeo.

Thanks for the video, I've got a DMF on the way out, hoping to fix it over the summer. I'm surprised by how little spring pressure there is even on the new one, I thought they'd be super strong springs, given the amount of impulse torque that they have to absorb.
Watched some expert from a company that makes clutches speak how sideways rocking is absolutely NOT a test and how most even completely good ones will do that, and should in no way be considered a test. Also that very small rotational shift is normal. EDIT : There are often depending on the model 3 types of springs. What you felt is the weak in the start but later down the line of compressing them huge forces happen.
My dual mass flywheel was slipping after 280 000 kilometres (not the clutch lol.) on my Mitsubishi pajero 2008 model and tha clutch was still in good condition. Also had a ton of grease coming out from that flywheel. You can't repair them either. Best is go back to old school single mass , problemmo solved
If one has had to remove the gearbox and clutch to inspect the suspect flywheel one might as well fit a new one anyway. Also fit a new clutch as well anyway, considering the labour involved
They can be lots of reasons clutch slipping leaking release bearing pressure plates rattling oil seal leaking still doesn't mean there's a problem with the flywheel So my original question still stands what about if you check the flywheel and it's ok and it cost £1,000 to replace what would you do
lets assume that there is no problem with centering. cant we just fix two pieces together in a cnc lathe to make it act like a single mass flywheel? will it work?
I checked my DMF with a prybar. Actually, joking aside your evaluation of the DMF is correct. Why on Earth did Vauxhall and other car manufacturers decide to have a DMF ? Life was so much easier with a solid lump of flywheel, you just swapped the friction disc and a complete Pressure plate and disc with a release bearing to do the job right and proper. £75.00 compared to £475.00. No brainer.
Yes mate I hear what you are saying but you know how some of these is an is like to mess of everything and the dual mass flywheel does a very good job of what it's actually designed to do it's just very expensive and doesn't particularly last long but actually when you look into it the job it does is excellent but yes I still agree with you there still a piece of shit lol

Cheers... But if you get the gearbox off, wouldn't change the clutch and flywheel anyway as it is a major pain?
Benedict White problem is the parts are really expensive you could be looking at £600-700 or more just in parts
@@autoSRI so is the labour to remove and replace the gearbox.
@@BensWorkshop 💪👍
Thank you for the video, Do you recommend replacing the DMF at each clutch change? I have recently taken ownership of a 2017 Golf GTI and a few days into driving it the clutch is slipping. The dealership I bought it from have agreed without hesitation to replace the clutch for me FOC, but I am also hearing a slight knocking sound at Idle (not bad at all) which I fear is very early signs of dual mass flywheel failure. The car has done 59k and we're talking about a 230bhp car here so my gut feeling is that they should replace the flywheel at the same time. what are your thoughts?
yes replace the fly wheel
look on ebay first
I've got factory spec free play and 4/5 teeth movement but it doesn't really spring back. It does slowly come back if I put a lot of pressure onnitnfirst. Does this sound good? It's a valeo.
Thanks! I’ll check this when I do the seals and clutch
Glad to help
Thanks Leon i didn't know that i will openly admit I've only checked one and that was on the car still
boom now you no lol thanks mate
@@bodgitandleggitgarage this is one of the reasons i watch you I've learnt alot from you very appreciated I'm only a home mechanic which struggles to alot being disabled but i always get it done and keep mine and my family's vehicles on the road
@@petetheresellerandscrapper849 thanks alot mate I'm glad my videos help that's what it's all about
I got a vibration happening on load on vehicle. Car on cold sounds like marbles goes away once warm. Thinking dmf. It is getting worse but not too visible on idle. Can sometimes see frm. D and neutral it goes away. Dsg
Like your videos I learn lots tips and tricks
Thanks mate
Duuuuude, THANK YOU!!!!
good info. fine job.
Thanks mate
Thanks bro
Do you know if there is a solid flywheel available for a 2.2 d4d 150hp avensis motor factors said they can't find a solid
Hope I don't have trouble with my 2012 Mondeo it has an automatic gearbox so will that be worse for me in repairs if that gets worn.
the most expensive thing is going to be your gearbox automatic gearbox is always expensive
my clutch on my 02 jeep tj works perfect.......but im getting a wicked vibration at all rpm.......like a dead hole......i assume if that goes bad it would vibrate like crazy?.......and ( got it used )......if someone did a single mass swap......i could watch my gear shift shake at idle? Trying to narrow this down before I pull the trans on a hunch !!
Thanks for the video, I've got a DMF on the way out, hoping to fix it over the summer. I'm surprised by how little spring pressure there is even on the new one, I thought they'd be super strong springs, given the amount of impulse torque that they have to absorb.
Hi mate obviously they move a lot more than that but physically I cannot put that much pressure on it but the engine can
Watched some expert from a company that makes clutches speak how sideways rocking is absolutely NOT a test and how most even completely good ones will do that, and should in no way be considered a test.
Thank you sir😊😊😊😊
If one has had to remove the gearbox and clutch to inspect the suspect flywheel one might as well fit a new one anyway. Also fit a new clutch as well anyway, considering the labour involved
Yes mate I agree but what if you test the flywheel and it's perfect and the flywheel cost £1,000 what would you do
@@bodgitandleggitgarage Investigate further as their has to be a reason to remove it in the first place.
They can be lots of reasons clutch slipping leaking release bearing pressure plates rattling oil seal leaking still doesn't mean there's a problem with the flywheel
So my original question still stands what about if you check the flywheel and it's ok and it cost £1,000 to replace what would you do
lets assume that there is no problem with centering. cant we just fix two pieces together in a cnc lathe to make it act like a single mass flywheel? will it work?
No it has to be balanced and whatnot so if you want a single mass then put a single mass on it don’t fuck about lol
Thank you! Your video is very helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
@@bodgitandleggitgarage .
Yo ! High 5s Matey..
What exactly does the DMF do ? apart from providing a device to bolt the pressure plate to ?
Why does it have to wobble all over the place ?
Honestly, as a motor engineer of some 51 years experience, please tell me what the F**ck does the DMF do ?
@@oldgitsknowstuff essentially it's to reduce torsional vibration through the drivetrain if you look in my video description there is a big write up about it
@@bodgitandleggitgarage .
OK, I'll take that on board.
So it's a dynamic torsional damper. And I thought it was only there to hold the starter ring gear.
There are people who discard the DMF and substitute it for a solid flywheel without any adverse effects. Anyway, thanks again for your help and thank Christ I don't need one. High 5s Matey.
got the cluch done on wfes mokka today, was dreading having to change the dmf due to price of the bloody things....there close to 500 quid ffs....thankfully it was still in good order....good old vauxhall, clutch and pressure plate good enough for at least another 40k....let down by a collasped seal on the release bearing..
Boom sorted
Unfortunately a new clutch kit is usually as, or more, expensive than your average used vehicle. They should at least make the flywheel more durable.
Hey, I have a noise on cold starts. When it sounds like the flywheel, but when you press the clutch pedal, the clutch release bearing sounds, but it only happens on cold. when the car get heat. it just doesn't sound anymore. What could be the problem? It's a 2.0 TFSI audi 8p 6 speed manual
Good tip Leon 😀😀
Thanks mate
How to check SMF?
Is that dmf serviceable? I feel it could be
no mate
for 190k km is really good mines about the same but completely gone
mine is knocking at the moment and i can feel sometimes like a rotational feel also vibration through the steeringwheel off to the main dealer i go for warranty lol
Was it the flywheel?
@@MrBojangles901 centric bearing rattling so they replaced the flywheel and clutch aswell under warranty win win

I have a 5 door Citroen xsara when 3rd gear and up when come off the power there is a heavy rattle noise but you touch power again even the slightest touch it goes away . Have you any idea what this is ?
Hi mate how's you can appreciate it going to be very difficult for me to answer this it could be something as simple as just a loose heat shield or it could be something more serious as clutch problems flywheel problems engine problems the list just goes on and on hopefully you can understand it's going to be very difficult for me to answer this I don't want to say something to you and it be wrong and you waste money on parts
Valeo is a real deal.
ok lol
The likes of Ford should have owned up and recalled every car with a DMF
If the box comes out for a clutch , you bet it's having a new dual mass , without fail
In a perfect world yes but let's imagine clutch is slipping and it's just a clutch plate you test a dual mass flywheel and it is all good and the dual mass flywheel is over £1,000 what are you going to do
Valeo every time like you sed showed no sign of giving up even in such a bad way correct me if I'm wrong I presume it's a DV6 if you get a flywheel and valeo clutch kit for a 90 bhp pre 2010 you are good for about 90k sorted 💣
all so be aware Peugeot and Citroen are using LUK from new witch seem to last ok but LUK replacement kits are garbage

bodgit and leggit garage are the DMR brand ones any good I have a freelander with a slave cylinder gone and when I do the cylinder I want to put a solid in I’ve been told it’s already been done with a new clutch but they never replaced the slave cylinder but this might not be true but I’ve seen one on eBay for around £160 and the cylinder is £54 from my supplier
