NEW Paul Rubens Gucai Unboxing, Swatching, Review & Compaison!

  • Hi friends! Today we are going to look at the new Paul Rubens Gucai watercolor metallic paint and paper combo: amzn.to/3tpNDBP
*several people asked about the fine mist water spray bottle, here it is: amzn.to/3FtoTgY it's very affordable and works great!
    Pros:
Size of pan (large Japanese gansai style)
    Price
    Easy to rewet
    Lovely color variety
Variety of shimmer form pearl, metallic to glitter
Pans can be taken out of the palette easy to paint with without taking up lots of space or sharing in a classroom
    Cons:
Pans will probably use up quickly due to their ease of resetting
    Large footprint
How do they compare to the Metallic half pan set by Paul Rubens? These are less expensive than the half pan version but are also less dense so they probably won't last as long. They are not different enough to need both. I'd choose the format you prefer. I use the 24 half pan set the most (24 set here: amzn.to/3vGNs6V ) myself and that is what I recommend. That said the gucai set is cheaper per color and you might prefer the larger pan so pick what is right for you.

Thanks for the review, Lindsey! Just a tip, gucai or gú cǎi (gú is pronounced like the first syllable in "uber"; cǎi is pronounced like "tsai", rhymes with "eye"). It can be translated as "ancient colors" into English, and the hues are inspired by classical Chinese color schemes.

Speaking of looking at other TH-camr videos...I have to admit, Lindsay, that it makes me smile, when I'm on another TH-cam channel and I see that you've left a comment on the video. It makes me feel like you are learning along with the rest of us. :)

Hey Lindsay, saw the Sat-chat, so glad you're feeling better.
I love your videos. I've been watching you for so long ..... your hair was long and blonde back then. I watch pretty much every video even if I don't do that specific medium. I was in the Michael's paper class you just did with them. I thought it was great, too. Very informative and your pieces are always great.
My only issue is how hard you are on yourself. Yes, we are out here, watching the entire video. No, we don't hate ANY of the stuff you do! We know we can fast-forward if we ever felt it was going too long. I've never even wanted to do that.
STOP being so hard on yourself, *please.*
Love ya, thanks for all you offer.
    LM

I love the swatching and long videos when I need to unwind after a stressful day. It relaxes me the first time I watch it, as well as show me how the product works in real time. And then I watch it a second or third time to fall asleep too, just because it’s peaceful and I love art. So I can watch a video multiple times for different reasons, which I definitely do with your videos. First for all the knowledge you are sharing and second for relaxation.

  • @mjpete27

Hullo Lindsay! I purchased the 24 set for such a cheap price I felt that I was getting the paint for free! I even removed the metallic paints and replaced them with a good set of DaVinci watercolor paints! My wife loves pink so the box was for her watercolor paints! She has always been a crafter and not a watercolor painter. I even purchased a book we can follow along with as the times I have tried to teach her about any different mediums, it does not always go smoothly. Wish us luck! I do enjoy watching your informative review videos! Well done!

I do as well. I was recently thinking about somehow trying to pour my H2O's into half pans and putting the sent into a large Mijello or Meeden palette with the inner insert removed.
It's just a thought since It'll probably be extremely lengthy and messy.

You mentioned that these don’t smell. I was wondering if your Arteza metallics have an oder? I noticed that mine smell… weird, sort of chemically and unpleasant. I was hoping the smell would go away with time, but no such luck so far.

Yes, Amazon's packaging is leaving much to be desired lately. My pink Paul Reuben's box was crushed on the end and was not suitable for gift giving. Recently, I had to return the 72 tin of Derwent pencils because the tin was so badly dented, I was afraid the pencils in the bottom tray were damaged. I already have the smaller Paul Reubens metallic set, but the ones you swatched in this video were lovely.

I love watching your swatching videos and usually purchase your recommendations. Question..Im new to watercolor and wonder what you would use so much metallic watercolor in a painting? you wouldn’t use them for landscape or florals so what would you paint with them that you have so many beautiful colors? thanks

They are good on black paper, you see it uused a lot in traditional Chinese painting. I also like them as accents over transparent watercolor especially in sketchbooks over dark color. They are awesome on handmade greeting cards too.

I use a Sharpie to write the colour name/number in English on the bottom of the pans for gansai paints (and on the side for regular watercolour pans).

Thank you for a great idea! I have a Gansi Tambi set and some added 6 pan sets that will not fit into the original box. I am going to use the extremely large tin that my Coupy crayons came in like you have done yours so I can keep all of them together. I am so glad I did not throw it away. It is perfect.

I think the landscape would have been cool if the ink had just been applied in a pen... line a d wash, or wash and line? Anyway, great review! Glad you're feeling up to the task!

Very glad for your reviews! You do a great job of analyzing products in an impartial way! I bought a very inexpensive metallic set for work several years ago and have begun exploring getting a more pigmented set for myself. I almost bought a set the other day but decided to wait and explore a bit more. This set looks like a good for how I plan to use it--not ready for a final decision yet but it will be a contender! Love the rooster!

I know nothing about paints, I collect them, but as soon as I saw them I thought Kuretake. Just commenting whilst still watching.
Back now are they the same consistency as Kuretake?
Also just as an aside I ordered Deli crayons. Is that review coming soon?
Also glad you survived the dreaded plague. Xx I’ve avoided it so far!

Oh Lindsey these are beautiful!!! I'm such a P.R. fan! I just got the "Opra set" that has all the florescent colors in it (sadly the lightfast sucks) but I think they might not be lightfast in any brand. I didn't know these were out, but they are going on my want list. Yes I have the 24, and 48 Metallics but these need me to take care of them. Lol. Thanks for the swatches, I can watch pain being put on paper anytime 😊 certainly glad your feeling better! Take it easy, it takes awhile to get your strength back.

Anything shiny is almost irresistible to me! I already have a small collection of metallic watercolours (all in the bigger size pans), and although I love them on black, they're so disappointing on white. I was wondering whether if you did a painting with waterproof intense colour (like derwent inktense or bombay ink), then went over them with the metallics, would you end up with the best of both worlds? - intense vibrant colours AND beautiful shiny metallics on white paper? If this appeals to you, it would be interesting to try... Thanks very much for your review and swatch. I love swatches - I'm glad you did the whole set. :)

Thanks for another great review. I think I'll keep using my 24 set like you. I love it when you swatch and hear how this brands version of a color is different or same as others.
You mentioned that you like the larger sized pans, have you seen / reviewed the Blockx watercolors. They come in 3"x2.25" pans. I saw it in St Louis Art Supply newsletter.

So most of the time, I *DESPISE* Artist's Loft art supplies, but I've somewhat recently really gotten into shimmery watercolour paint and found that they have an excellent quality 28 pack that I absolutely *LOVE!*
About a year or so ago, I painted a portrait of a jpint favourite character between my fiance and I, for him for his birthday. Thing is, I painted it in acrylic... on canvas. As a bit of an ill timed experiment, I decided to paint the watercolour on *TOP* of not only the canvas but the acrylic paint itself. Not only is the watercolour still there, and still just as shiny as the the colour is in the pan, I had it against stuff immediately after it dried (trying to hide it from hubs), it withstood being rubbed against somewhat heartily, and it doesn't have a single sign of wear!
I would love if you got them and tried them out so I could see how you thought they atacked up against your more expenaive pans. I found them not only to be creamy but also to be more opaque than even my Kuratake rainbow metallics!

@@thefrugalcrafter yes it is! Their alcohol markers are trash (the tips of mine fell apart after the second use and I've seen some TH-camrs yave them crystalize right out of the box, and others leak all of their ink out. I also got one of their dot journals before knowing anything about paper thickness, and they're like kids journals but with dots instead of lines.
I do usw their canvases though, but in my opinion, there is only one negative with cheap canvas: they don't wrap all the way around the side. It's worth the price difference though!
I want to try out their regular watercolours now.

Amazon started sending every they can in bags and you need to ask for a box when ordering if that's what you want your stuff to arrive in. According to them, it's their new environmentally friendly policy.
