    These look gorgeous. I don’t care for most shimmer paints, because they really only deliver on black paper. But these look magnificent on white, so I may need to give them a try!

    Crepe myrtle is a shrub or tree. They can grow quite tall, about two stories tall in some cases. Their blooms range in color from white to purple, pink to deep red. In the United States they're one of the few plants that bloom at the height of summer. Some are also fall blooming. Another great video. Thanks again!

      I look forward to seeing them here in the south every spring. We have mostly the hot pink/magenta colored ones here in Arkansas. It matches the paint color perfrctly! 😍💓👌

      Crepe myrtle is one of the most diverse plants on the planet. There are ground cover crepe myrtle, shrub crepe myrtle, and tall tree crepe myrtle as you say. And everything in between. They're available in every color except black, and in nearly every kind of varrigations. Some do well in shade, some do well in full light. They're amazing flowers. They're perhaps my favorite plants, ever. Sorry for the long fangirling moment.

    Those are gorgeous! To me these would be more versatile than the finetec or kuretake metallics - especially since the half pans are smaller than the pans in other brands (ill take variety over abundance)

    My favourite thing about their paints is the presentation they put together. It shows they care about the product. I've never tried this brand but I'm so envious "in happy ways" you get to try this set!! I was completely ooohing and ahhing at these! So beautiful, I was surprised at the shimmer that camera was able to catch and as always, very thorough girl! Thank you for doing this video!

    Oh, and a crepe myrtle is indeed a plant. It is easily grown, can be trimmed to maintain a hedge shape or allowed to grow to a tall tree height. They have clusters of white, pink, red-violet, or dark red flowers. (I have the last two, lol)

    I bought this palette recently and it really is gorgeous. I got a great (empathetic) laugh out of the swatch mistake - I did exactly the same thing when I was swatching them. I missed the last of the many yellow-golds and realized it two colors later. Doh! Your reference to makeup is quite right. The golden maroon, in particular, is a strong duochrome, which seems to be all the rage in eyeshadows today. Love your channel, thank you.

    It's not hard to tell that the company is based in Shanghai cuz while there's a word in Chinese for brown color (棕色), I grow up saying coffee color (咖啡色)in colloquial Chinese in Shanghai. Love the video! These colors look awesome.

    Thank you Oto!
    The punch and sparkle of this really surprised me!
    I am glad to hear that open stock of the tubes paint will be available at some point. I have found myself of a quest for the rest of these paints. The fold out sheet they give you is quite tempting.
    I was on Ali Express this morning and I have to say it is very confusing in terms of what is Paul Rubens. It seems like Paul Rubens products have been purchased and repackaged by someone who has made hand poured sets. (Like you might see on Etsy.) One is called Paul 'P'ubens on the set and Paul Rubens in the description, this is a hand poured set (sets). It looks hand mixed with white to make some pastel colors also. There is a Meeden set that looks exactly like the Paul Rubens set without the Paul Rubens insignia. There is one by Bgln and Lubenski. And another by Artix which is Paul Rubens once you click on the description. Side note: I even found a 1/2 pan set of M.Graham in a wood box.
    I did order one of these hand poured 1/2 pan Paul Rubens last week (thinking the set included tubes). I don't see that particular set there now. kind of regret doing that now, but I will keep an open mind and see what I get. Sorry for the long post. Anyway, I would stick with Amazon for clarity on what you are getting. The price of these paint has dropped $10. Since I purchased my set in May on Amazon.
    The Artix set ( of the basic 24 color set) on Ali Express is $22.07.
    When you shop around it does get quite confusing!
    Thanks again Oto, great review!

    I've swatched the PR shimmer palette on a page with my Komorebi metallic palette, and with Amethyst, Kyanite, Sugilite, and Fuchsite Genuines from DS, my findings are thusly:
    First of all, they are all different from each other, there are no dupes.
    -PR's "Deep Interference Green" (which is more a minty teal than a "deep green") and Fuchsite are closest, but Fuchsite is a slightly darker teal.
    -Komorebi's "Yellow Gold" and PR's "Royal Gold" are close, PR's has a more bronze luster to it than Komorebi's.
    -PR's "Bronze Satin" and Komorebi's "Rose Gold" are close, but the "Rose Gold" is pinker, both when reflecting and not reflecting.
    Speaking of color differences, my "Golden Maroon" green is by far more deep brown than maroon and has a forest green shimmer to it. There's no "golden" anywhere in mine. It doesn't look like what this video's looks like either. I wonder whether it's a different formula now or if one of us got a fluke mix? In mine it makes the order the paints came in very strange, so I switched it so the "Golden Maroon" is between "Dark Green" and "Brown." Frankly I rather hated the color until I realized it's very similar to hummingbird feathers that iridesce a different color than they are when light isn't hitting them.
    MY DS Amethyst Gen. and Fuchsite Gen. are only faintly sparkly, more like the subtle shimmer you get from PR's "Rose Red."
    My Kyanite Gen. and Sugilite Gen. easily shold their own against the Flash/Flare colors.
    Komorebi's "Copper" shone brightest/most intensely of all the paints I swatched.
    PR's "Wine Red" and "Copper" uniquely showed brush marks, the rest did so barely noticeably if they did so whatsoever.
    I got cauliflowering from PR's "Deep Interference Orange," "Bronze Satin," "Deep Interference Red," "Pink," "Rose Red," "Crepe Myrtle," "Deep Interference Green," "Fruit Green" (on the masstone!), "Golden Maroon," and "Silver Black." I also got cauliflowering from DS Amethyst Gen. and Fuchsite Gen.
    Komorebi "Silver" looks grey when it's not sparkling, PR "Pearl Platinum" reflects a palest gold but is silvery when not reflecting. PR's "Golden Maroon," again, is brown when it's not reflecting forest green. PR's "Crepe Myrtle" is a fuschia with lilac shimmer.
    I think PR's "Flash Purple" would paint EXCELLENT snow, especially if diluted, as it has a bunch of sparkle even when diluted to mostly water, with that ever-so-faint purple shade like shadows on snowdrifts.
    The heaviest granulating colors were Komorebi's "Yellow Gold" and "Rose Gold;" PR's "Royal Gold," "Bronze Satin," "Wine Red," "Symphony Purple," "Flash Purple," "Symphony Blue," "Shiny Blue," "Dark Green," "Golden Maroon," and "Brown." My DS Amethyst, Sugilite, and Kyanite Gen. also granulated a lot.
    I find PR's "Deep Interference Blue" and "Shiny Blue" too similar for them to both live on the same palette, the "Deep Interference Blue" gives a unique appearance of physical depth which none of the other paints provide, which I rather miss in the "Shiny Blue," which may be why the latter lacks in comparison.
    Of all the paints, PR's "Deep Interference Orange" is the least shimmery or metallic or sparkly. It's wholly lacking in shimmer halfway through my swatch by the time I added water to my brush the second time. In all the other paints, shimmer made it all the way to the end of the swatch.
    If you're looking for a richly deep color, PR's "Silver Black" won't be enough. My DS Kyanite Genuine was darker at the most diluted end of a 4-inch-long swatch than the PR "Silver Black" in masstone. The "Silver Black" is essentially a charcoal with a bluish-silver pearlescent shimmer, whereas Kyanite Gen is of course VERY sparkly, so they're not particularly close in terms of how they iridesce.
    If anyone has any questions or I wasn't clear about anything, ask away. Hope this helped someone.

    Yes! That's probably the attraction: the fact that it looks like make-up and make-up has been to play/have fun/look beautiful. I never was one to go to bright/over-the-top colors like JS's Blue Blood, but was still attracted nonetheless. This palette looks so fun and I think I'll go back and forth with myself on if I should buy it. (Probably will in the end lol.) Thanks for the review! Much appreciated.

    The Paul Rubens that is one of the nicer ones, but Ive decided that I am going to make my own… I have a lot of Mika and interference colors of cosmetic grade powders from when I used to make make up. So, I am going to add them to some tube paint and make my own pallet, I have way too many watercolor sets to justify buying a pearlescent one! LOL Thank you for swatchinag them!

  • @nutmeg9892
    @nutmeg9892 ปีที่แล้ว

    I found this video after I had a chance to swatch the set myself. Either the company has started having quality control issues or they are manufacturing them differently than before. Few of my colors were as rich and saturated as what I'm seeing in your video. I made sure to let them sit with water for a long time before I used them but more than a few of the colors seem to have more binder/filler than pigment.

    Yes, crepe myrtle is a plant. Thanks for another great video and wrecking my budget! These certainly are much cheaper than DS, and wonderful. They are also offered in a 12 paint palette, just as their regular watercolors are. Both are on my must have list and thinking I should get them before they become really popular and prices go up, or we lose access to them due to the trade issues with China vs. US.

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      is the trade thing encroaching on art supplies?

    • @farmwife7944
      @farmwife7944 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will soon. He announced yesterday that he will break the 144 yr old trade agreement that drastically reduces postal fees for small purchases coming from China. If we need to pay the fees that supplies cost us coming from Canada or Europe then it will not be reasonable. We have great paints in Daniel Smith and M. Graham right here in the US but having an inexpensive choice for travel or crafts is nice with no worries about damaging or losing a good set.

    Thanks for the review. I can see this brand becoming more popular, a frontrunner choice for both artists and crafters given the price, quality and attention to detail such as the cloth. This is a brand I have seen on Amazon many times but never even considered it - now I will definitely be buying the iridescent colours at least. I’m one of the few who don’t see all the fuss about Schminke, having tested their colours from a dot sheet to find the paint tends to leave hard edges. I am going to test again on more papers but in general, based on your reviews, these paints seem better than my experience with Schmincke and the incredible value for money cannot be overlooked IMHO.

    I like the set but it can be tricky to use. The colors can come out looking garish. Always test first! Coliro are my favorite metallic paints. In gold shades. Their other colors are also weird if not careful

    Thanks for the review! To be honest, I was very curious how the shimmery palette would look and it's quite nice. Have you tried bigger washes?
    If I was to give those sets as a gift to a talented child, would it be a nice gift? Are they enjoyable to paint with? How do they perform in comparison to other sets? I'm just really thinking about giving them as a gift to my niece, because I want her to use some "nice paints". Would you recommend the Rubens set or other paints (shimmery and "regular")?
    Thanks for everything and this wonderful review.
    The presentation of the Rubens paints is amazing for sure.
    Have a great day!

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wouldn’t be able to tell you that as you know your niece better. Also can’t compare with other sets as I don’t have any other shimmery sets. Sorry I can’t help!

    • @LanaGoesArt
      @LanaGoesArt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your honesty! I'll have to think about that. But I think she would love to have some shimmery paints (she's very girly). :)

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What I can say is that the set is delightful! It’s a fun set and if she likes sparkles, then I’m sure she’ll enjoy it. I’m not very girly but it made even me feel giddy.

    • @mondrache
      @mondrache 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Metallic paints need some pre-wetting, otherwise they turn out very pale. Depending on the child's age, these are artist's supplies and should not be consumed. You should also use a different watercup for these or other colours will turn out glittery. To sum up: The child should be a little patient, careful and somewhat experienced using watercolours or gouache.
      I hope these guidelines will help you decide.

    Interesting. What would you use metallic (or sparkly) colours for? I paint landscapes (mainly) still life, portraits, urban scketcking …. and I cannot think of a reason to use sparkly stuff… perhaps fantasy landscapes?anime? If you use them, please let me know..

    I painted each color next to its name. I wanted the exact color to be there for me to see not the wrapper cuz I cannot read what it says and it isnt very indicative of the color paint really. Aren they just stunning colors? I'm in love with them. I could only afford the 12 pan set.
