    I like the results you get with this setup. The biggest problem I have with using an umbrella is the shape of the highlight in the eye. You can see the spokes of the umbrella instead of a (more natural) circular highlight. The soft shadows (or better, the lack of shadows) are caused by the nature of an umbrella; it shoots light in every direction, which allows it to fill in the shadows that it creates. There is very little control where the light goes, and what happens with the shadows. You can even stand between your model and any lightshaper of this size, without being visible in the shot. A 7'' (indirect) softbox will have a similar effect. Another option is bouncing a flash off a white a wall behind you.

    Hey Anita! Thanks for making this a demonstration of your unique creative approach instead of the all-too-common product promo push that so easily overwhelms most of the youtube tutorial ecosystem. It's really refreshing to come away feeling inspired and motivated instead of out-geared or financially inhibited. Your photo talent is bested only by your true teaching abilities. Thank you!

    I think it's a great solution as a fill light and then have a beauty dish or more focused light to dynamically light the subject/face.

    The results are amazing! My goal was to play more with a beauty dish this year, because I was taking photos with large softbox for around two years and I instantly fell in love with BD because of this nice, more highlighted look, but it seems that umbrella can provide even better effect :) I'll definitely try this during winter when my wedding season will be done and I'll have more time for creating portraits and beauty editorials again. Thank you for the tip! :)

      I just tried this setup myself with a Elinchrom Rotalux 59" Indirect Softbox (150cm Diameter) silver interior without diffuser, using a cable release, I feel the light was blinding in close distance (1-1.5m). I feel it was so difficult to look directly at the lens that's right in front of the light. I have no idea how the models could possibly be looking straight ahead. What am I not doing right?

    This is exactly how I shoot I used a alien bee 600 with a 51 inch deep silver umbrella! If you tilt it at more of a 60 degree angle where the light is coming more diagonal at the model the highlight becomes intense especially if it’s very dewy. I have been obsessed with this set up

  • @josephboldt8065
    @josephboldt8065 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the quality content as always. I was wondering why you seem to have the light rigged septate from the umbrella? Is it to be able to focus the light by controlling the distance of the stobe head (similar to higher end parabolics), or is it simply to support the weight of the larger umbrella? Also, have you tried, or have thoughts on the quality of light on the skin when using a pebbled silver umbrella vs the hard silver vs a white umbrella? Would love a comparison if you had access to all three in a similar size (especially the pebbled silver vs the hard silver). Thanks again.

    • @sadowskaphoto
      @sadowskaphoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joseph Boldt Hey! No It’s only because the umbrella is meant for a Profoto light which i Don’t have, hence the separate mount! The Bowens I use has no mount on the light itself.

      Hey! I actually had it separately mounted on this same stand as the light so it wasn’t directly attached. It was on a grip Like this one www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/3581-REG/Avenger_D200_D200_Grip_Head.html and the flash on top of the lightstand above

    Hi can you provide a link for this exact setup? I’ve tried to click on a different link and it no longer works!

    I have tried this setup and I loved it, but I do get a much darker background than intended, and lot of shadow on the neck, so I had to use a reflector to reduce them. Then again, my studio space is very limited and this kind of equipment is large. You seemed have a lot of space between you and the model, and the background.

      You'll likely need to light your background separately, especially if you want a white background to show as white.
